newark. the hazmat team is on scene right now, and they are detecting a small amount of ammonia still in this food processing plant. you can see the building has been evacuated, alameda county fire got the call at 5:16 a.m. of an ammonia leak at the full bloom baking company, a food processing plant near overlake. about a dozen employees were on site this morning and they detected an odor. two people were treated for eye irritation on scene. they'll be ok. right now a hazmat team is trying to determine the severity of the leak. ammonia exposure can be quite painful. >> eyes will water. you can cough. burn. any moisture on your body will burn. those are initial signs warning you there is ammonia in the space. or it can be much more severe depending on the concentration. >> reporter: again a hazmat team is on scene right now and they'll be out here for a while. at this point we're unsure whether employees will be allowed back into the plant any time today. live in newark, lorraine

blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. part of an apartment building caught fire in oakland overnight. the fire broke out inside a unit at east 118th and rosedale avenue around 1:30. when firefighters arrived smoke was billowing out of the apartment. it took crews 15 minutes to bring the fire under control. >> the units found the rear unit on fire, and they were able to contain it to the point of origin. >> firefighters say they believe the apartment was vacant. a fire investigator is looking into what caused that fire. an investigation is under way into a deadly shooting in san francisco. it happened around 11:00 last night in the first block of sixth street in the city's south of market neighborhood. when officers arrived they found a 25-year-old man lying on the sidewalk with a gun shot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police haven't made any arrests. oakland is experiencing one of its most violent weeks since 2007. seven people killed in seven

days. f.b.i. statistics rank oakland as the fourth most violent city in the country right now. last night, officers raided a west oakland duplex. two people were arrested on drug charges. >> i wish my kids could play in the neighborhood right now, but they can't because of all the homicide. >> a neighborhood resident weighed for police at his home to investigate a burglary. he says they never showed up. officers say they were responding to priority calls of violence. oakland ranks first in robberies and car thefts. the police department says its shifting its resources to address the violence, but according to the tribune, the community policing program could suffer. instead of devoting an officer to each of oakland's 57 community policing beats, an officer would be assigned to the largest 35 beats. that would free up the remaining 22 officers to focus on the most violent areas in the city. more berkeley police and firefighters are getting injured on the job. the oakland tribune reports the

number of injuries shot up in the past three years, and is now higher than state and national averages. between january and may of this year, 28% of all police employees, including patrol officers and jail workers, suffered injuries. 22% of firefighters were hurt. city leaders say they can't explain the increase. the mayor says it appears, though, that training and safety programs have failed. ktvu has obtained surveillance video that could play a major role in an upcoming high profile hit and run trial. in san francisco last thanksgiving, someone ran over a 29-year-old firefighter albert batal. he has been in a coma ever since. the surveillance video is from a jack in the box restaurant. attorneys for the defendant, eduardo dennis esquivel. they show bartal started the fight. >> dennis gets in between and puts his arms out to stop any possible fight and then he leaves when the manager comes out.

then you see bartell escaping the manager's grasp, doing a beeline for my client and punching him in the face. >> it's hard to make believe going from that altercation to use a 4000 pound vehicle, and basically trying to murder someone. >> prosecutors say they have video showing the actual hit and run crash at a gas station. chaparro faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and torture. another search is scheduled today for missing 15-year-old sierra lamar. volunteers have been meeting at burnett elementary school in morgan hill every wednesday and saturday morning, looking for lamar. she disappeared almost four months ago to the day. trying to prevent more disappearances, the poly class kids foundation will hold a free child safety event at burnett elementary at 10:00 this morning in conjunction with the search for sierra. today each child will receive digitized fingerprints up and dated photograph and a d.n.a. collection kit.

children will be fingerprinted and photographed. this morning a san francisco man is in jail accused of leading an identity theft scam for 30 years. 58-year-old gregory harvo was arrested on thursday. police were contacted by a michigan man on june 13th who said he was denied medical benefits because someone in california had already obtained benefits using the victim's name and social security number. the investigation led police to heirville. he is accused of obtaining jobs, receiving tickets and serving time under the false identity. california plans to take its inmates out of an oklahoma prison where a riot took place last year. this is video of guards using tear gas to end that riot last october. the california department of corrections says it will remove all 2300 california inmates from the north fork correctional facility in oklahoma. a private company runs that prison. 46 inmates were hurt in the riot. the inmates are set to be removed by december of next year. new this morning, president obama is renewing his call to

help the middle class. >> on january 1, taxes are set to go up for 10s of millions of americans. i think that would be a huge financial hit for middle class families. [ cheers and applause ] >> the bush era tax cuts will expire at the end of the year. the president is urging congress to extend the cuts for people earning less than a quarter million dollars, while eliminating the break to those earning above that amount. he says top down economics won't help now. president obama will talk about taxes during a campaign stop in virginia today. a woman will battle president obama and mitt romney for the white house. this weekend the green party is expected to nominate massachusetts dr. jill stein. she lost to romney a decade ago in the governor. comedian rosanne barr is also seeking the green party's nomination for president. meanwhile the obama reelection campaign has lost a key member in its chicago headquarters after he collapsed and died. coming up in seven minutes, the

god morning to you, we searched and searched and found you just a peek of 9 at mount diablo this morning. convicted wife killer hans riser is set to make closing arguments in his civil case on monday. riser is representing himself in the trial. his testimony so far has not proved to be very effective in the judge's eyes. the judge stopped reiser simple times yesterday and warned him for speaking off topic. at one point reiser called his wife nina a psychopath. he was convicted of murdering her in 2006. his children are suing him for their mother's death. next week is a critical point in the ethics misconduct

case against suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. his wife is return to venezuela to testify on wednesday. she says the investigation against her husband is a witch hunt. mirkarimi was spended in march after pleading guilty of a domestic violence incident. mirkarimi is accusing mayor ed lee of perjury and wants to subpoena witnesses. the ethics committee will consider his request on thursday. voters will get to decide whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be allowed in palo alto. they'll hear a resolution to put an initiative on the november ballot that would put three medical marijuana dispensaries to open in the city. the idea is to create an ordinance that would counter the current ban on cannabis clubs. the council is set to vote on the resolution monday night. a member of president obama's reelection team is being remembered this morning. 29-year-old alex oakrad worked in the chicago headquarters. he died after collapsing yesterday. his parents say he suffered heart attack after working out.

he was an avid supporter of the president since obama's u.s. senate campaign in 2004. >> he was very fierce about what believed and what he didn't believe. and he worked -- he had such passion for the work that he did. >> president obama called the family to offer his condolence. he said as a father of two girls, he could not imagine their loss. the daughter of robert f. kennedy has been arrested on charges of driving while impaired by drugs. new york state police took kerry kennedy into custody yesterday. they say she was swerving on an interstate when she collided with a tractor trailer. this incident comes two months after kennedy's sister-in-law mary committed suicide. we're learning more about the sudden death of sylvester stallone's oldest son sage. a housekeeper found the 36-year- old's body inside his hollywood home yesterday. the cause of his death is still under investigation, but t.m.z. reports that numerous empty pill bottles were found inside

his home. sage stallone appeared as rocky, jr. and had his own aspirations to act and direct films. his father issued a statement saying he is devastated and grieve-stricken by his son's death. a woman accused of using boiling water and a baseball bat to kill her ex-husband, l. stand trial. a judge has ordered jesussa tatod to face murder, torture and other charges in court. prosecutors say she poured boiling water on her ex husband while he was sleeping and hit him in the head with a baseball bat last november 26, all because she believed he had been cheating on her. ronny tatod dyed earl days later from his injury. she will be arraigned later this month. a woman in oregon is using her cheating husband to sell her home. there's a sign in front of the home that reads for sale by scorned, slightly bitter, newly single owner. the fine print explains that her husband left her for a 22- year-old. she says the sign is an effort

that law requires anyone who performs abortions to be an ob/gyn with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. titions at the clinic say hospital -- physicians at the clinic say hospitals have not responded to their requests to obtain those privileges and the law could force it to close. colorado moms held a nurse- in to pre-test the treatment of a breast feeding mother at an ingle wood water park. charlotte dirk says she chose to breast-feed her 10 month old baby by a public swimming pool because she needed to keep an eye on her three other children. a park employee asked her to move to a more private area because some guests were complaining. when other mom heard dirk's story they decided to stage a protest at the park to draw attention to the rights of breast-feeding mothers. >> they look at the breast as materialistic wise, sexual wise. actually the breast is there to nourish a child. >> the city of ingle wood has apologized to dirks. women are allowed to breast- feed in public under colorado law. an investigation from a

consumer watch dog group finds many popular purse brands may contain dangerous levels of lead. the center for environmental health say they found purse containing lead at one out of every four stores they visited. the purses that contain the most lead were made by toy birch, guess, house of harlow, nine west and charlotte russ. one toy birch purse contained roughly 580 times the amount of lead that's allowed in children's toys. >> who are they aimed at? women, teens, 20s. women who are having children. >> researchers say brightly colored purses made of plastic or vinyl seem to contain the most lead. researchers say they're concerned that the lead could rupp off the burres and be -- the purse and be ingested by children it's only july but many farmers in the midwest are already thinking about christmas. why there could be tree shortages this year. >> well, maybe mid july, but it

an equestrian show is helping to raise awareness of the plight of the burrowing owl in san jose. they say hundreds of owls used to live in the county but now there are only about 40 pairs left because development is encroach onington birds' habitat. >> the habitat, which looks like nothing to other people is very precious to nature lovers, has been consumed by infrastructure, by office buildings. >> the audubon society contacted the equestrian show cavalia which agreed to put owl a video to raise awareness of the owls' declining numbers. the video will be shown before every performance and attendees will have the option of

donating to the audubon society. in just about 90 minutes, san francisco's community clean team will begin sprucing up the bay view district. the team is meeting on jamestown avenue near candlestick park and they'll clean until noon. they will be joined by mayor ed lee and members of the san francisco 49ers. this is the sixth community clean team event of the year. you may witness a rare show in the sky this weekend. nasa scientists say a solar storm is set to arrive this morning and it will last through sunday. the flares will boost the northern lights on earth so much that some in california may actually get to see them. severe solar storms can cause power blackouts but no disruptions are expected from this event. northern lights are really amazing. i've seen them once. they're incredible >> powerful. >> but usually not in northern california. that's unusual. let's check in with rosemary and see if we are going to get any clear skies in northern california to possibly see those lights. >> that could be a bit tricky. we'll watch the burn off later this morning. at this hour the low clouds evening causes delays at s.f.o.

make it harder to find a christmas tree in future holiday seasons. christmas tree farmers say most of the trees they planted this spring died due to dry conditions. >> you plant the trees out there, and give them the best shot that you can give them, and leave the rest up to -- up to mother nature, and this year she decided not to provide the water. >> trees planted in previous years do appear to have survived the drought so it shouldn't impact tree supplies this december, but several years from now, you could see fewer varieties on the market due to tough growing conditions this year. the city of san bruno hit with tragedy again. how a prayer candle may have led to the death of a two-year- old home with his grandparents. >> and the federal government is going whale watching. the plan in place that impacts bay area shipping lanes in an effort to protect the largest mammals in the world.

we are following a developing situation. crews respond to an ammonia leak at an east bay business. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm jana katsuyama. there's an ammonia leak at a business in newark. lorraine blanco is live at the scene to tell us how this leak started and what happened when those strong fumes got out into the open.

lorraine. >> reporter: a hazmat team did another test on the plant and we're told they got a zero amoen that reading. that's why as you can see employees are back in the building but they're not going back into the room where the leak originated. the al immediate county fire chief on scene says -- alameda county fire chief says a valve on a freezer has a leaky gasket. that's where the ammonia escaped at 5:16 a.m. at this point the leak is under control. apparently maintenance was scheduled for later today on that freezer. this problem moved up repairs. about a dozen employees were working at the time and two people were treated on scene for throat and eye irritation. >> when it comes in contact with moisture on your body it will burn. so it's an irritant. kit burn your eyes, nose, mouth. and in small concentrations. as it gets more concentrated kit do more damage. >> a plant engineer is monitoring the situation here at the full bloom baking company. if the problem happens again, fire hazmat will be called back.

nearby. >> the community members made a connection between the dump truck and the cyclist, and believe that the truck struck the cyclist. >> it was a motorcyclist who flagged the truck driver down, forcing him to stop. the driver said he did not even know he had hit the cyclist. police say the driver cooperated and was not arrested. they are reviewing surveillance tapes and hoping a witness who saw the crash will come forward. >>this morning, investigators are looking into the cause of a fire in san bruno that killed a two-year-old boy and critically injured his grandparents. the fire broke out just before 9:00 yesterday morning at a home on lake drive. a nearby construction crew managed to save a 20-year-old man who was inside the house but they did not reach a two- year-old boy and his grandmother in time. >> there was two victims in the back, and they broke a window, they said the heat and smoke were too severe for them to -- to help out. >> investigators believe a

candle in an upstairs closet where the little boy's grandmother liked to pray may have started the fire. sheriff deputies say the suspects in a purse snatching have been arrested. deputies say the suspects were taken into custody yesterday afternoon on highway 85 causing it to be closed for a short time. authorities say the suspect's truck matched the description of the get away vehicle earlier in the day. three teenagers are facing charges in connection to a car vandalism spree. the tribune reports 32 cars were vandalized as an underground parking garage in union city yesterday. vehicles included a core resident and ferrari. -- corvette and ferrari. the suspects are all boys, two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old. they were arrested on charges including burglary, vandalism and auto theft. investigators accuse the teenagers of targeting expensive vehicles. an east oakland sports center that's been burglarized four times in the last four

weeks has been holding a fund raise they are month. the east oakland boxing association says boxing equipment, laptops and even gardening tools were taken in the burglaries. if you'd like to help the organization is holding a fund- raiser on july 21st to celebrate their 25th anniversary at their facility it's the second day of a food drive sponsored by the oakland coliseum and country stars tim mcgraw and kenny chesney. this weekend the coliseum is hosting the two singers and their brothers of the sun tour. they are asking fans to come down to the coliseum and drop off non-perishable food items. it will benefit the alameda county food bank. drop off food today from 10 until 2. a group of woman who say their sons were killed by police will hold a protest against san francisco's muni on monday. the mothers group gathered in san francisco last night and stood just a few feet from where they say a young man kenneth harding died in a shoot- out with officers last year. the women planned to demonstrate against muni, because a transit driver called

police after harding did not pay his fare. the dispute escalated into a shooting. police claimed harding shot himself. >> because we're not going to accept the police killing our children. we're sick and tired of it. we're through. >> muni says it will monitor monday's protest. the transit agency will send out tweets to all passengers of changes. monday marks the first anniversary of the harding shooting. protestors indicated they will gather at 5:30 in the morning at third and palo streets. the demonstration is part of a weekend of events. there is a free community hip hop show at san francisco city college's mission campus today, and a community feed tomorrow. occupiers plan to teach people about their movement today. the group occupy education in california will meet at berkeley's civic center park at noon. members include u.c. berkeley students. organizers say the two hour event features forums and lessons on the lack of funding for public education in

california. animal rights activists plan to protest at the san francisco restaurant the presid ohio social club tonight. they say it's violating the new ban on foix gras. >> no foi gras. it's against the law. >> a couple of dozen activists demonstrated yesterday. they say it's also ignoring the ban which took effect at the beginning of the month. it prohibits the sale of foigras as well as the force feeding of a bird tone large its liver. >> i was an undercover cruelty investigator for the animal protection and rescue league. we saw ducks unable to stand, to walk, the breathe. >> as chefs what we live off of is our creativity. as soon as the government starts taking crayons out of our box what are we going to be left with? >> the restaurant chefs say they are serving the delicacy as part of their tasting menu. it's offered free as a gift to customers. federal maritime officials have approved a plan to protect

good morning to you. there is a nice sight for sore eyes, mostly blue skies overbay point this morning with low clouds drifting by. a bay area marine is back home after disappearing 68 years ago. 19-year-old tech sergeant james sisney was laid to rest at golden gait national cemetery in san bruno. his plane crashed in the south pacific back on april 22, 1944. six other marines also died. the wreckage was excavated five years ago, and the identity of the marines were only recently confirmed through dna. >> just the fact that he's now coming home, and he's at rest. where he should be. it's a good feeling.

show you the weekend coming up. >> thanks, rosemary. we are following developing news. there was an ammonia leak this morning at an industrial food plant in newark. ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco is live in newark to tell us about that hazmat situation and what's going on there right now. lorraine. >> reporter: everything is back to normal for the most part here at full bloom baking company. a hazmat team did a final test and got a zero ammonia reading. alameda county fire got the call of an ammonia leak near overlake and furcrest in newark just after 5 a.m. a dozen employees were inside the food processing plant and a few detected an odor by a freezer. two people were treated for throat and eye irritation. firefighters tell us ammonia exposure can be serious. >> eyes will water. can cough, burn. any moisture on your body, under your arms, legs, will burn. those are initial signs that are warning you that there's ammonia in the space. or it can be much more severe depending on the concentration.

francisco. it happened around 11:00 last night on the first block of sixth street in the city south of market neighborhood. when officers arrived they say they found a 25-year-old man on the sidewalk with a gun shot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not made any arrests in the case. part of an apartment building caught fire in oakland overnight. the fire broke out inside the unit at east 118th street and rosedale avenue around 1:30 a.m. when firefighters arrived smoke was billowing out of the apartment and it took cruise about 15 minutes to bring that fire under control. >> arriving units found the rear one unit on fire. they were able to contain it to the point of origin. >> firefighters said they believe the apartment was vacant. a fire investigator was looking into what caused that fire. oakland is experiencing one of its most violent weeks since 2007.

seven people killed in seven days. f.b.i. statistics rank oakland as the fourth most violent city in the country. last night, officers attempting to address some of that violence they raided a west oakland duplex. two people were arrested on drug charges. >> i wish my kids could play in the neighborhood right now, but they can't because of all the homicides. a fruit vail neighborhood resident waited for police at his home to investigate a burglary. he says police never showed up. officers say they were responding to priority calls of violence. oakland ranks first in robberies and car thefts. the police department says its shifting its resources to address that violence, but according to the oakland tribune, the community policing program could suffer. instead of devoting an officer to each of oakland's 57 community policing beats, an officer would be assigned to the largest 35 beats. that would free up the remaining 22 officers to focus on the most violent areas in the city. more berkeley police and

firefighters are getting injured on the job. the oakland tribune reports the number of injuries shot up in the past three years, and is now higher than the state and national averages. between january and may of this year, 28% of all police employees, including patrol officers and jail workers, suffered injuries. 22% of firefighters were hurt. city leaders say they can't explain the increase. the mayor says it appears that training and safety programs have failed. ktvu has obtained sur vills video that could play a major role in an upcoming high profile hit and run trial. in san francisco last thanksgiving, someone ran over 29-year-old firefighter albert bartal. he has been in a coma ever since. the surveillance video is from a jack in the box restaurant. attorneys for the defendant, eduardo chaparro esquivel say the pictures show bartal starting a fight. >> dennis gets in between him, puts his arms out to stop any

possible fight, and they been he leaves when the manager comes out. then you see bartal escaping the manager's grasp, doing a beeline for my client, and then punching him in the face. >> it's hard to make the leap from going to that altercation to using a 4000 pound vehicle and basically trying to murder someone. >> prosecutors say they have video showing the actual hit and run crash at the gas station. chaparro faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and torture. a san francisco man is facing felony charges after allegedly living under a stolen identity for 30 years. 58-year-old gregory harville was arrested on thursday. back on june 13th, police were contacted by a michigan man who says he was denied medical benefits because someone in california had already obtained benefits using his name and social security number. that investigation led police to harville who apparently also

head jobs, received tickets, and served time under the false identity. california plans to take its inmates out of an oklahoma prison where a riot took place last year. in is video of guards using tear gas to end a riot last october. the california department of corrections says it will remove all 2300 california inmates from the north fork correctional facility in oklahoma. a private company runs that prison. 46 inmates were hurt in the riot. the inmates are set to be removed by december of next year. new this morning, an egyptian who kidnapped two american citizens is threatening more abductions. the egyptian says the two hostages are safe and being treated like guests. however, he's vowing to kidnap more people of different nationalities if mid east authorities don't release his uncle from prison. the bedoins live in a region that borders the gaza strip and israel. they have long complained of

already battling the fire. we're live in forest hill with more on the evacuations and the efforts to contain the fire. letitia. >> reporter: good morning. the fire is not letting up here in forest hills. it's grown to 1500 acres and firefighters say it's one of the most stubborn fires they've seen in a long time. they are dealing with very treacherous conditions. these are canyons that are very steep and have brush about six feet high. it hasn't burned in quite some time so that is a big concern and it's fueling the fire. 300 acres overnight. it's 20% contained. some 1600 firefighters from all over the state are now on the fire lines trying to stop the fire from spreading to homes. 170 homes are in the path of the fire. so far hundreds of people have had to be evacuated, the red cross says, because pets aren't allowed at the shelter, the evacuation center is really not being used as it turns out. people whose homes aren't threatened are opening up their homes to evacuees. >> i think we're just kind of

next week is a critical point in the ethics misconduct case against suspended starch francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. his wife ill jan that lopez is returning from venezuela to testify on wednesday. she says the investigation against her husband is a, quote, witch hunt. mirkarimi was spended in march after pleading guilty in connection with a domestic violence incident. mirkarimi is accusing mayor ed lee of perjury and wants to subpoena witnesses. the ethics commission will consider his request next week. voters might get the chance to decide whether medical marijuana dispensaries should be allowed in palo alto. the city council will hear a resolution to put an initiative on the november ballot that would permit three medical marijuana dispensaries to open in the city. the palo alto daily news reports the idea is to create an ordinance that would counter the current ban on cannabis clubs. the council is set to vote on if resolution monday night. a member of president obama's reelection team is

a scare at an east bay business. the hazmat situation crews had to deal with in the early morning hours. good morning, welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm jana katsuyama. >> and i'm mike mibach. an ammonia leak prompted an evacuation in newark. a dozen employees had to clear out of the full bloom baking company around 5:15 this morning. firefighters say a leaky gasket on a valve in a big freezer let out 900 pounds of pneumonia -- ammonia, at a food processing plant inside a large industrial center on overlake place. that triggered a sensor which note vied alameda county's hazmat teams. >> right now we are looking at it as a possible maintenance issue, but that has been resolved. but we're going to ensure the space is safe by checking to make sure there is no ammonia. >> two people were treated for eye and throat irritation. the hazmat crews left the evacuated workers back into the building once they determined there was no more ammonia in the air. another search is now under way for missing 15-year-old

grandmother liked to pray may have started that fire. santa clara sheriff's deputies say the suspects in a purse snatching in coopertino have been arrested. the suspects were taken into custody yesterday afternoon on highway 85, causing it to be closed for a short time. authorities say the suspect's truck matched the description of the get away vehicle from a purse snatching at pete's coffee and tea on stevens creek boulevard earlier in the day. three teenage boys are facing charges in connection to a car vandalism spree. the tribune reports 32 cars were vandalized as an underground parking garage in union city yesterday. vehicles included a corvette and a ferrari. the suspects, two 14-year-olds and one 16-year-old, were arrested on charges including burglary, vandalism, and auto theft. investigators accused the teens of targeting expensive vehicles. an east oakland sports center that has been burglarized four times in the past four weeks is holding a fund-raiser later this month.

bride's father, a war lord turned politician. three afghan security force officials were also killed. this morning, leaders from the world are condemning a massacre in the syrian town of tremsa. the video of the attack is disturbing. observers say at least 220 people were killed in the attack in sierra's hama province on thursday, making it the deadliest day since the up rising began. tremsa is near the sites of two other reported massacres including an attack in may where more than 100 civilians died. >> this involved mechanized units, indirect fire, as well as helicopters. >> activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed since the start of the syrian you been rising in march. they say most of the dead are civilians. in spain protestors clashed with police over the country's new austerity measures.

a few thousand demonstrators were heading to the headquarters of political parties when riot police cut them off. one man's nose was broken in the scuffle as you see it there. several demonstrators also were arrested. the new austerity measures include higher taxes and lower jobless benefits. spain's unemployment rate is 25%. three americans were killed when a private jet crashed and burned into flames at the end of a runway in the south of france. authorities say the jet crashed during a landing attempt yesterday at the airport in le castelet. the identity of the victims hasn't be released but they were all crew members. authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. a warning about a possible pilot shortage in the next two decades is creating concerns about safety. boeing predicts airlines will need to hire almost half a million new pilots world wide over the next 20 years as they expand their fleets. that is raising concerns that airlines could start hiring less experienced pilots in an effort to fill vacancies.

in the case. part of an apartment building caught fire in oakland overnight. the fire broke out inside a unit at east 118th street and rosedale avenue around 1:30 a.m. when firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing out of the apartment. it took crews 15 minutes to bring the fire under control. >> arriving units found the rear one unit on fire and were able to contain it to the point of origin. >> firefighters said they believed the apartment was vacant. a fire investigator was looking into the cause of the fire. ktvu has obtained surveillance video that could play a major role in an upcoming high profile hit and run trial. in san francisco last thanksgiving, someone ran over 29-year-old firefighter albert bartol. he has been in a coma ever since. surveillance video from a jack in the box restaurant is being reviewed. attorneys for the defendant say the pictures show bartol started a fight by nudging a trash can into a group of customers.

we're able to capture or print on a child as young as two or three months old. it's so sophisticated. >> reporter: obviously you're an expert in missing children. how can something like this help? >> well, in a lot of ways. number one, we like to think that it enables parents to engage a dialogue with their children about child safety. obviously knowledge is power and the more knowledge you have, the better informed you are, the better you are to avoid victimization in the first place. but if there is an emergency, we've got this nine-point plan. who do you contact? why do you need to contact these people, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. so there's really a lot of things going on with the biodoc beyond the fact that we're handing a piece of paper to parents at the end of the event. >> reporter: and mark, i know you have been very invested in this search. what keeps you going in this and having that hope? >> i think maybe the most positive vibe in all of south county is probably right in this auditorium right here. people are here, very hopeful.

obtaining jobs, receiving tickets, and serving time under the false identity. this morning, investigators are looking into the cause of a fire in san bruno that killed a 2-year-old boy and critically injured his grandparents. the fire broke out just before 9:00 yesterday morning at a home on lake drive. a nearby construction crew managed to save a 20-year-old man who was inside the house, but they did not reach a 2-year-old boy and his grandmother in time. >> there was two victims in the back and they broke a window, but said the heat and smoke were too severe for them to help out. >> investigators believe a candle in an upstairs closet where the little boy's grandmother often prayed may have started the fire. oakland is experiencing one of its most violent weeks in recent years. seven people killed in seven days. fbi statistics rank oakland as the fourth most violent city in the country. last night, officers rated west oakland duplex, where two people were arrested on drug charges.

believed that the truck struck the cyclist. >> a motorcyclist flagged that truck driver down. the driver said he didn't know he had hit benton. police say the driver cooperated and was not arrested. they are reviewing surveillance tapes now and hope a witness who saw the crash will come forward. three teenage boys are facing charges in connection to a car vandalism spree. the oakland tribune reports 32 cars were vandalized at an underground parking garage in union city yesterday. vehicles included a corvette and a ferrari. the suspects, two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old, were arrested on charges including burglary, vandalism, and auto shiest. investigators accuse the teens of targeting expensive vehicles. in east oakland sports center that's been burglarized four times in the past four weeks is holding a fund-raiser later this month. the east oakland boxing association says that boxing equipment, laptops, even gardening tools were taken in the burglaries. if you would like to help, the organization is holding a

no one was hurt. calfire is trying to figure out the cause. a dozen workers had to briefly evacuate a food processing plant because of an ammonia leak. it happened this morning at the full bloom baking company. the culprit was a leaky gasket on a valve in a big freezer. two people had to be treated for eye and throat irritation. a new search is under way for missing teenager sierra lamar. this is a live picture from inside the morgan hill search headquarters. volunteers are already out searching, but in conjunction, there's a free child safety event this morning hosted by the polly klaas kids foundation. children will be fingerprint and photographed digitally and receive a dna collection kit. more berkeley police and firefighters are getting injured on the job. the oakland tribune reports the number of injuries shot up in the past three years and is now higher than state and national averages. between january and may of this year, 28% of all police employees, including patrol officers and jail workers,

suffered injuries. 22% of firefighters were hurt. city leaders say they cannot explain the increase. the mayor says it appears that training and safety programs have failed. a seattle man shot twice during a deadly rampage has returned to the cafe where his friends were killed. leonard muse was told to turn a disgruntled customer away from cafe racer on may 30th. muse offered the customer a coffee to go. when he turned to make it, the customer shot him in the face and stomach. muse and others are still waiting for their wounds from that day to heal. >> everyone, you know, rightfully feels they have a personal relationship with the place or me or what happened. nobody got away clean. >> the customer killed six people, then committed suicide a few blocks from the cafe. muse is now hoping to reopen that cafe. a woman accused of using boiling water and a baseball bat to kill her ex-husband will

stand trial. a judge has ordered jesusa tatad to face murder and other charges in court. prosecutors say she poured boiling water on her husband while he was sleeping, then hit him in the head with a baseball bat last november 26th. she says she believed he had been cheating on her. ronnie tatad died several days later. jesusa will be arraigned later this month. a woman in oregon is using they are cheating husband to sell her home. she has a sign in front of her home explaining in fine print that her husband left her for a 22-year-old. the sign is in effort to get a competitive edge in the housing market. >> i'm certainly not the first person to be cheated on. i won't be the last. so a lot of people relate, lot of people see the sign and, you know, lot of women say things like, oh, wish i had done that or i would do worse. >> she says her ex-husband is

actually on board with her sale technique and even helped her make the sign. she says they both need to move on and need to sell the house in order to do that. new this morning, at least 23 people have been killed in a suicide attack at a wedding in northern afghanistan. more than 40 others were injured in the attack. one of those killed was the bride's father, a war lord-turned politician. three afghan security force officials also were killed. new this morning, u.n. observers have arrived in the syrian town where a masacre has been reported. we want to warn you, the video of the attack is disturbing. activists say at least 220 people were killed in the attack on thursday. that makes it the deadliest day since this uprising began. this was near the sites of two other reported masacres, including an attack in may, where more than 100 civilians died. >> this involved mechanized

units, indirect fire, as well as helicopters. >> activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed since the start of the syrian uprising in march. they say most of the dead are civilians. in spain, protesters clashed with police over the country's new austerity measures. a couple thousand demonstrators were heading to the headquarters of political parties when riot police cut them off. one man's nose was broken in the scuffle. several demonstrators were also arrested. new austerity measures include lower taxes and higher unemployment rates. three americans were killed when a private jet crashed and burst into flames at the end of a runway in the south of france. authorities say the jet crashed during a landing attempt yesterday at an airport. identity of the victims has not been released, but officials say they were all crewmembers. french authorities are investigating the cause of that

crash. the battle over a proposed tobacco tax in california is not over. unofficial results show proposition 39 failed. supporters are demanding a recount. prop 29 proposes a $1 tax on cigarette which would go to research. two-thirds of voters voted by mail in the june primary election. turnout was 31%. that was actually higher than the record low of 28% in the june 2008 primary. an equestrian show is helping the fight of the burrowing owl. hundreds of the owls used to live in the county, but now there are only about 40 pairs left because development is encroaching on the birds' habitat. >> the habitat, which looks like nothing to other people and is very precious to nature lovers

. the judge's panel at american idol is getting pretty empty. yesterday, jennifer lopez told host ryan seacrest on his radio show that she's leaving american idol. her announcement comes one day after steven tyler announced he's quitting to focus on his band aerosmith. there are also rumors that randy jackson, a judge since season 1, might not return. people magazine is reporting that singer mariah carey could become a judge. charlie sheen has also reportedly been approached. today is opening day for baseball at a notorious prison. the san quintin giants will lace up the cleats this morning. the team is made up of lifers and other inmates. they play visiting teams from around the region.
