. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. we begin with developing news out of the north bay tonight, where a small plane went down this afternoon. it happened near noss field in movado around 4:00 p.m. the plane landed upside down in marshland. allie rasmus is live at the scene with more. >> reporter: fortunately, the pilot was not seriously hurt. he walked away from the crash with just a cut on his arm. now, this is gnoss field airport in marijn county. according to the airport manager here, the person involved in that crash was a student pilot based out of this airport. he was doing a practice flight and coming in for a landing around 3:45 this afternoon. the manager says he was flying an rv 7 a described as an experimental plane, that the pilot assembled himself. the pilot reported having engine trouble. as he was coming in for landing, he skidded off the runway, ending up in the grassy marsh next to the runway. the pilot ended up flipping the

plane when he crash landed. firefighters snapped this photo of the plane upside down in the grass. this is what the scene looked like when they arrived. luckily, according to firefighters, there were several people in the area who rushed to the crash scene to help. >> there were several other pilots in the area that either heard or witnessed the incident, rushed over, lifted the rear of the aircraft up off, up off the ground and that allowed the pilot to exit the aircraft, with only a minor injury to his hand. >> reporter: when fire paramedics arrived, the pilot was treated at the scene for that cut and went home afterwards. federal aviation investigators did interview the pilot over the phone as part of their investigation, but according to airport managers here at gnoss field, airport operations are back to normal. allie rasmus, channel 2news. a newark bakery was evacuated this morning, due to an ammonia leak. it's a story we first brought you live on mornings on 2. a dozen workers had to leave the full bloom baking company on

overlake place at around 5:15 this morning. alameda county fire officials say a leaky freezer gasket released the ammonia. two people were treated for eye and throat irritation. the bakery was honored by the obama administration back in april for its sustainable business practices. a san bruno couple is still hospitalized tonight, after yesterday's tragic fire that killed their 2-year-old grandson. the fire broke out just before 9:00 yesterday morning at the family's home on lake drive. relatives said the grandparents would often baby-sit the 2-year-old son while his parents were at work. investigators say they believe the fire started in an upstairs closet, where the grandmother had a shrine with candles. a 3-year-old east bay girl is recovering tonight, after a two-story fall. the accident happened this morning at an apartment complex on fremont boulevard in fremont. the girl, whose name is being withheld, fell when a window screen gave way. she plunged to the ground and her father climbed down to rescue her.

amazingly, authorities say she only suffered bumps and bruises. she was taken to children's opt in oakland for observation. . now to our continuing coverage of a wildfire in the sierra foothills. more than 300 people are still out of their homes, three days after the robbers fire broke out near the town of forest hill in placer county. calfire says south winds are pushing the flames toward homes in the yankee gems area. 2000 firefighters are working to protect the properties. the fire has grown to more than 1400 acres. crews were able to double containment overnight to 20%. 170 homes are in the path of the fire. the national guard is providing five blackhawk helicopters to help protect them. >> because this fire is burning in such a remote area, those helicopters are going to be critical to get those hot spots out. >> the state is also adding national guard personnel to the area, with crews coming from as far away as los angeles. in san jose this morning, firefighters battled a

challenging fire at a lumber yard. the fire broke out at monterrey road and blanchard road in southeast san jose around 5:45 this morning. it burned for about 2 hours. calfire crews had to truck in water from a hydrant down the street. the cause of this fire is under investigation. this afternoon, we learned the identity of a man shot to death in san francisco last night. police responded to 6th street near market at about 11:00. officers found 25-year-old gary smith of san francisco lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the sceefn. police have not made any arrests. berkeley police are hoping witnesses will come forward to an accident that killed a renowned psychology professor. investigators say 65-year-old shlomo benton got into some kind of accident as he rode his bike yesterday afternoon on bancroft way near fulton street. the professor from hebrew university of jerusalem was lecturing at uc berkeley. some witnesses thought a passing dump truck may have hit the

professor. the driver was questioned and police say it is possible that he was not involved. occupy demonstrators gathered on the peninsula today to protest construction plans for a new san mateo county jail. the jail is set to be built at maple street in redwood city. ktvu talked with protesters and learned they are not the only ones upset about the project. >> no more changes! we need jobs! we need wages! >> reporter: a small, but passionate protest in redwood city against san mateo county's soon-to-be-built jail. >> they don't have jobs, no insurance. >> reporter: protesters say the $155 million to build the jail and the $40 million used to run it annually should be used instead to help improve the lives of young people. >> we are comight the resources that we need to educate our children to the confinement of their parents. >> reporter: the jail has been in the works for seven years and the county board of supervisors approved it because of serious

jail overcrowding. board president says the county is always looking for ways to reduce the jail population. >> we want to put in programs, greater programs than we can do now because of overcrowding and the lack of space and see if we can do the wrap-around services to help people rehabilitate and be able to get out on their own and do well in the community. >> reporter: this fabrication shop has to vacate the premises in just days. while the operators made a deal to set building to the county, they are not happy either. >> we got to shut down for five working days just to move, you know, and yes, the city compensates to what they think it's worth, but i mean, it's a huge inconvenience. >> reporter: this building is scheduled to be torn down in a few weeks. the new jail is set to open in 2015. ktvu channel 2news. hundreds of community volunteers rolled up their sleeves today to clean up a san francisco neighborhood. today was the monthly gathering of the city's clean team. more than 3300 people, many from

the bayview hunters point neighborhood fanned out all over that neighborhood, even by boat, to pick up trash and more. >> removing graffiti, planting trees, cleaning tree basins, sweeping, doing all sorts of things to improve the quality of the neighborhood. >> we're told mayor ed lee came out to give the group a pep talk earlier in the day. the department of public works says so far this year, cleanup volunteers have donated more than 5000 hours of their time. . in election 2012 news tonight, president obama is using mitt romney's singing voice in a campaign ad. ♪ o, beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves-- >> the ad released today attacks romney for outsourcing jobs and calls romney not the solution, but the problem. the obama campaign has spent almost $100 million on television commercials in battle ground states, especially ohio, florida, and virginia. >> mr. romney's got a different

supreme court's decision on health reform and also referred to president obama as a, quote, dictator. the former senator from pennsylvania opened a new campaign office outside pittsburgh today for romney's campaign. romney is on vacation this weekend in new hampshire. the los angeles county coroner's office says there were no signs of foul play or trauma in the death of sage stallone, son of movie star sylvester stallone. an employee and family member found the body of the 36-year-old yesterday in his los angeles home. now, there are reports the 36-year-old had been dead for sometime. an autopsy is planned and it could be several weeks before test results help establish a cause of death. the search continues for 15-year-old sierra lamar. and today, parents had another reason to come down to the search center. and new details in the penn state sex abuse scandal. what we learned happened just as that scandal began to unfold. plus, techies show off their skills in san francisco.

monday will mark four months since the 15-year-old disappeared. today, volunteers were out yet again, hoping to find her. but as lorainne blanco reports now, today's mission was also to make sure other children are protected. >> let's go, gang! >> reporter: as dedicated volunteers embark on another search effort for 15-year-old sierra lamar-- >> try to relax, try to relax. >> reporter: -- her mother marlene is protecting other parents protect their little ones inside the morgan hill search center. >> it's such a different world now that we live in that i feel it's too easy for them to get hurt and too easy for them to be taken away or something horrific happen to them. >> reporter: andrea payne got emotional as her son derek and her daughter sabrina got their pictures taken and prints taken by the klaas foundation. >> we utilize high tech equipment, all computerized, so sophisticated that we can get viable prints on children as young as only a couple of months

molesting his daughter. he was arrested a year ago. the daughter says she had been molested from the age of 5 to 14. be sure to go to ktvu.com for more information on the sierra lamar case. just look for the sierra lamar tab on our home page. there was more fallout today from the jerry sandusky sex scandal. this time, involving the late penn state head football coach, joe paterno. the "new york times" reports that paterno started secret negotiations for an early retirement package, as soon as he was subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury investigating jerry sandusky. that package includes millions of dollars in benefits for his surviving family that continue for years. paterno's family yesterday said penn state suggested the retirement package. visa and mastercard have agreed to settle a major antitrust lawsuit for more than $6 billion. retailers sued over charges known as swipe fees. the suit claimed that credit card giants conspired to charge merchants an average of 2% per

yesterday's high. right now, on live storm tracker 2, rain showers moving into extreme southeastern california, thunderstorms as well. we just have the low clouds and fog still glued to our coastline and already as we showed you, a few patches heading into san francisco bay. as far as temperatures from this afternoon, we warmed up in a few more 80s compared to yesterday's 70s. san jose stopped out at 81. san francisco yesterday at 57. today, 64 degrees. forecast headlines for tonight, areas of fog. it is breezy out there with winds around 20 miles an hour. tomorrow, morning fog, a touch warmer. then for monday and tuesday, we go the other direction once again. a sun/cloud mix and temperatures cooling off. overnight lows for sunday morning, fog still around the coast, near parts of the bay. temperatures mainly, no big story here, no big changes, mainly in the low to mid-50s. this area of low pressure has been responsible for the cooldown over the past few days. this is shooting out to the north and to the east. as a result, we're going to warm things up for the second half of

the weekend, but even a cooler system is scheduled to move in for monday and tuesday and big drop-off, sharp drop-off in temperatures for monday and tuesday. look what happens by tuesday. warmest locations inland only in the mid-70s, around 74 to 75 degrees. here's our forecast model, showing you some of the overcast tomorrow morning, even a few patches into the bay. this is something different. it clears back on some of the fog, even coastside, persistent fog coastside. we could have a few patches left over into the afternoon hours, but maybe breaks. warmest locations inland, on track to reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. tomorrow, a good 5 to 10 degrees warmer than today's highs. oakland will go to 72. brentwood, around 90 degrees. livermore at 88. friends in san jose, lower 80s. temperatures checking in around 3:00 or 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, san francisco at 66. here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast, with your weekend always in view. there's evidence of our cooling trend for monday and tuesday.
