prison. his children sued him for $10 million each. their attorney says he doesn't know if he has money now or come up with money. and we are waiting the results of an autopsy following the death of a man found in a hotel room. a worker found the body yesterday. police tells athey are treating the case as a suspicious -- tell us they are treating the case as a suspicious death. the man's identity hasn't been released. two dogs saved the lives of two people after a fire started at their home at 4:00 a.m. investigators say the two people in the home were able to escape thanks to their two dog whose woke them up. strong winds fueled the flames but crews kept the flames from spreading and no one was hurt.

the cause is under investigation. tomorrow cal state university officials will look at two budget cutting proposals. they will be considering tough choices tomorrow. they say without governor jerry brown's tax hikes, they have two alternatives. one plan is to raise tuition by $150 a semester and cut salaries and benefits by 2- 1/2%, another plan cuts enrollment by 1-1/2%. and in 10 minutes the impacts of rising tuition. the nation's largest public pension fund reported a disappointing 1% return left on its investments. it falls short of the projected. the return made prompt them to

working on new strategies. >> we are not sitting on our hands and waiting for 150 cops to show up before we start working. we are looking at how to consolidate units, move people around, adjustment so we can effectively deal with the spike in crime. >> so far this year there have been 62 homicides in oakland. that is up from 57 last year. assaults, rapes, robberies have also increased. a navy ship fired on a small boat today killing one person and wounding three others. the navy says they warned the boat several times before they opened fire. it is a refueling ship. the navy said the boat was coming right that ship.

could effect other inmates. the court ruled in the case of the man convicted of murdering a woman. the court said the trial judge improperly dismissed a juror for her conflicting views on the death penalty. scot peterson is appealing his case on the same grounds. he claims the judge wrongly dismissed jurors. police said a 49-year-old man was arrested after attempting to steal copper pipes from a building. an alarm went off yesterday in the building. officers arrived and spotted a man making his way along the edge of the roof. investigators say he had cut off copper pipes that were on the roof. he was arrested on charges including vandalism. construction crews broke

s. donald j. sobol was the creator of the brown series. featuring leroy brown. he died last week in florida from natural causes. next year is the 50th anniversary of the series with a new book scheduled for release this october. donald j. sobol was 87 years old. and steven covey, his book sold 20 million copies, has died. the family said he died surrounded by family just like he wanted. his death was from effects of a bicycle accident last april. he was 79 years old. target will carry greeting
