extinguishers. six people are homeless and several weeks of restoration lie head. one unit was fully involved and spreading rapidly showing it was well beyond the capability of neighbors to do much of anything about it. >> all the windows were smashing out but firefighters got here quickly and put it out. >> we are told seven engines were called -- engines were called. we have a mutual response and we have three engines from fremont fire and hayward fire to help put out the fire. >> reporter: firefighters quickly contained the blaze in 20 minutes. six were unable to return due to the extensive damage to the living quarters and as you can see those folks will have to

look for other quarters and certainly everybody else will have to deal with repairs and everything else that will have to go on for the weeks or months that it will take to be repaired. ktvu channel 2 morning news. and in other news, a police officer and taxi cab driver suffered non-life threatening injuries in an early morning crash. the officer knocked over a fire hydrants and water gushed for about two hours flooding the intersection. the cab driver and officer were taken to the hospital but they are expected to be okay. coming up at 6:30 we will go live to the scene with what witnesses said about the crash. police in palo alto are telling residents to take extra precautions because of the rise in home burglaries. tara moriarty is live in palo alto to tell us how these thieves are getting in. >> reporter: well these thieves

are brazen, they are striking in the middle of the day and police are reminding you to lock up because they are getting in through unlocked windows and cars this is in palo alto where burglars have struck over the last few months. burglars have targeted 20 homes throughout the city mostly in the northern section of town east of middle field road. police have a message, that is to lock up. sunday morning they arrested michael holden who was staying temporarily at a home in can't lynn dry -- in the area. they found the teens breaking into cars on the 1400 block of edge wood drive. they are trying to figure out if they are linked to the recent rash of burglaries. now several happened this year

and police launched a look it or lose it move and they are calling for you to call in any suspicious activity and again to lock up. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. police in freemont want your help to find an elderly man deemed at risk. he is known as ted and was last seen sunday evening. his daughter went to pick him up for a medical appointment but both his vehicle and he were missing. he is 85 years old, weighs 160 pounds, has gray hair, brown eyes drives a prius. the license plate is on the screen. if you have any information about this, call the fremont police department. this is a new job for

melissa myer who moved to yahoo. she was hired by google and worked up to the executive ranks. she was responsible for creating google search and left the job to take over the top spot at yahoo. >> the person who should be the ceo of google is now the ceo of yahoo. >> melissa says she is smart disciplined and demanding enough to be able to turn yahoo around. more of the dirty laundry is and coming to light. the utility once considered downgrading the seriousness of natural gas leaks and downgrading it would have saved pg&e $5 million in repair costs. they scrapped the idea after

whistleblowers complained. this came two years before the san bruno pipeline disaster. and if we -- as we get closer to the presidential elections president barack obama and mitt romney are releasing new attack ads every day. how the latest ads are taking video of the candidates singing and using it against them. also today, the san francisco board of supervisors are due to vote to the rank choice voting system and three rank proposals. one would abolish it -- abolish it for all except the board of supervisors. it would leave it in place for all except the mayor. and he lost his fight to end rank choice voting in oakland. puente wanted to put an

initiative on the bat lot to end rank choice voting but he needed the approval of mayor jean quan or the city administrator to get that measure on the city council agenda and both of them refused to do it. we are talking about the wet roadways and sal has been looking throughout at highway conditions taking a look at the east shore freeway, how are things there? >> things are improving, jenna, you can see the freeway traffic looks good and it does not appear that the roads are wet anymore especially if you are driving along distance you may get into wet weather so give yourself an extra five minutes if you can. no problems on the bridge itself getting into san francisco and we have been checking dumbarton and san mateo bridge and this traffic

looks good getting over to the peninsular. 6:08 let's go to steve. really strong system to the north and for this time of year it is rare to see something like this. thunder and lightning picked up a lot of drizzle here. in the last few hours, you can see light rain and golden gate heights and eureka valley also in there .04 as well. today will be the coolest day and today will be a lot warmer and it will be hard to get out of the upper 60s. it is way up there now. i just tweet out some of the higher elevations 49 and 50 degrees with the winds gusting and for july it is unseasonably cool. mainly low $60 and very low -- 60s and very low 70s out to the

. a major bridge connecting the u.s. and canada is back

open after a bogus bomb threat. somebody called 911 saying a bomb would go off on the ambassador bridge. they stopped all traffic across the bridge. security sweeps failed to turn up any devices and the bridge was reopened. a similar threat was made in canada and prompted the closure of the detroit windsor tunnel. they have a person in custody after a shooting that killed two people an injured 19 others. it happened during a large outdoor barbecue last night. a fight broke out and at least two people started shooting at each other in a crowd of more than 200 people. some people were injured while trying to get away. time now 5:14, president barack obama is about to board air force one and will be flying to san antonio texas. we are looking at joint base andrews in maryland and this is where the president will be

traffic stop in east oakland saturday night. he was cited and released. he was open to reward a scholarship to a gunshot victim and recent high school graduate. we first told you about this story as breaking news. police in the south bay are checking to see if sunny veil home invasion suspects are tied to similar crimes in the area. police are already responsing near washington park when they saw two men running. they quickly caught one, right there and they tracked a second man to a nearby backyard where he was arrested. police say the men and a woman made contact with the home invasion victim through a personal serviced a. they reportedly sold several items including electronics. they are still searching for that female accomplice. well there is an increase

in every category of crime. homicides are up along with aggravated assaults rapes and robberies. burglaries increased a staggering 40%. the chief is working on a new crime fighting program he hopes to have in place by the end of the month. they are holding a hearing on the city's growing hospital controversy. they want to build a new hospital at the site on vanness avenue but the city first wants a commitment that they will keep open the st. lukes' commission district open for another few years. they pledge they would as long as the hospital meets a certain profit margin. they are looking for loopholes to get around this

cook. and i am dave clark, we have developing news from san francisco. a police officer and cab driver are recovering and their vehicles had collided just hours ago. allie rasmus is at the scene to show us and tell us about the big mess that was created, allie? >> reporter: the big crash happened in the bay view district and you can see it is a warehouse neighborhood and the street is completely cleared now but if you look over at the intersection you can see signs of the overnight crash. the fire hydrant was knocked over on its side and the sign is bent at a 90-degree angle. a cab driver and police officer collided and this is what it looked like at about 2:00. for two hours water gushed out of the hydrant flooding the

streets. the officer appeared to -- [ technical difficulties, stand by ] >> they were both in the hospital right now. a truck driver who was parked nearby heard it happen. >> i was asleep and i heard a good loud thump so when i woke up i saw the officer sitting on top of the hydrant. >> they towed everything away and they are not giving us details on how exactly it happened. we don't know if the officer was responding to another call. we don't know who was at fault. there is a cab yard and it is possible the cab driver was either coming from or going to the yard when this collision happened. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 morning news. the contra coster sheriff's department is investigating a body found under a bridge in row day oh.

it happened near 4th street and parker avenue. the sheriff's department confirmed to ktvu channel 2 morning news they did find a man dead but they have not released any information on his identity or how he died. ktvu channel 2 morning news tom is live at the scene with the homelessness at the scene and some dramatic video. >> reporter: it all happened at about 10:00 last night when flames bursting from this apartment prompted panicked calls to 911 one. it happened in the 3700 block of cherry street and fire ignited the entire structure. the man next door was the first to notice it. >> i was watching television and i smelled something burning and we checked our stove and i come outside and i saw flames

coming in next door so i go back inside and said let's get out. >> because they are so involved it took longer and we had to search both apartments and one apartment, we had to search both sides and make sure nobody was in there. >> reporter: 6 were unable to return to their apartments and sought aid from their friends and red cross. two units are completely uninhabitant -- uninhibittable. everyone should have a fire extinguisher live at the ready. they are getting closer to to containing the so called robber's fire. 2600 acres have been burned. now north of the fire there is big concern this morning. some of the people there

already started evaluating on their own -- evacuating on their own. it already cost about $7 million. in the meantime 50 homes have been evacuated because of a wildfire that burned 640 acres. more than 20 firefighters are out there burning the calf fire and it is already 50% contained. still no word on what caused the fire. it is a case of horrific abuse. they were a dozen mentalis disabled a -- mentally disabled adults. here is what happened when they faced a judge. and the wrongful death lawsuit against hands riser. -- hans riser. the two children are seeking millions of dollars in damages. riser is acting as his own

. lots of drizzle, some rain up in northern california, a very cool day, a lot of 60s and once the clouds burn off it will be breezy to windy. here is a quick look at some of the top stories, san francisco police patrol car in a cab, they were involved in this early morning collision, this happened at about 2:00 a.m., both of them crashed into that fire hydrant. both were taken to the hospital, they are expected to be okay. the red cross right now is helping to provide shelter for several people left homeless after this apartment house fire in newark. you are looking at home video and the fire started when a pot was left unattended on a kitchen stove when it caught

fire. nobody was hurt but the flames caused a lot of damage. today is the first day on the job for the knew chief executive officer. marissa meyer, she has been a top executive at google and the first female engineer hired at google. and a crime warning for people living in palo alto, home burglaries are on the rise. live with what -- live with what police are saying about these crimes and how you can protect your own home. >> reporter: sometimes people forget to lock their cars and doors and police are reminding people to do just that especially since thieves are so brazen striking in the middle of the day. burglars have struck over the past two months and let's give you an idea of where they have done some damage.

20 homes mostly in the northern section, police say the burglars are trying to steal their loot. they arrested him after he stole some cash from another unit. police also arrested two teens after finding them breaking into cars on the 1400 block of edge wood drive. they are trying to figure out if the trio is linked to the recent rash of burglaries. 71 daytime burglaries were reported and police then launched a lose it or lock it campaign but with this uptake in crime, police once again are trying to get the word out and to remind you to call in any suspicious activities and again lock those doors and windows.

tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. they are launching an investigation into one strange attack into one airline. sewing needles, one passenger was hurt but refused medical treatment. flight attendant dance stopped after needles were reported. at least four people are hurt. police rethesed what he thinks to be a gun. sources close to the investigation say events elsewhere in the area may have led to the shooting. right now in washington d.c., actress jada pink smith

she is about to testify at a congressional hearing. in fact the hearing is dealing with human trafficking. earlier this year, jada started an investigation called don't sell bodies. she first brought the issue on trafficking and insisted we have to do something about it so there is jada testifying before congress on the issue of human trafficking and we will bring you more information about it. and accused of a horrific case in a case against mentally disabled adults, a judge increased their bail to $500,000 each. she was led away in handcuffs and her brother, her father and mother were also taken into custody. the suspect severely neglected

20-year-old tyler grande was hit from behind as he broke up a fight at a 4th of july party in vacaville. he was in a coma until sunday and that's when he his mother removed him from life support and donated his organs. >> somebody will have a life because of this. i don't want this to go for nothing. >> no arrests have been made in the beating. county crime stoppers and grande's employer is offering rewards for information leading to an arrest. and in a san mateo neighborhood, they are looking for somebody who shot a cat shot in the leg on iris court. the veterinarians are telling the times the cat is expected to survive but it is paralyzed. if you have any information call san mateo police. it will soon be hard to
