breaking news. he's already in prison for killing his wife. now a jury has returned a verdict in a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of hans riser's children -- hans roseer's -- reizer.

good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. rob roth has more outside the courthouse. here's more. >> reporter: tori, the jury deliberated and they were responsible for the verdict and awarded $25 million each to the rosier children--- reizer children. >> we wanted to make darned sure the children were taken well care of. they would have the psychological help that they needed for the rest of their life. these children would probably never be able to go into the workforce and we wanted to make sure it was an amount they

what kind of work is being done today. >> reporter: tori, they are cleaning these pipes out so you are really not smelling gas. you are smelling the stuff that makes it smellable. it's if the smell like rotten eggs. what's interesting, some extension serve testimony had been -- some extense civic testing had been done. in hydrotesting, utility fills these big areas with water. it's relatively simple to test the pipe to test standards. if it does not fail, it's capable of carrying high pressure national gas. so far this year, pg&e has tested almost 50 yards of pipelines it will do another 140 to 150 by year's end.

in the meantime, any newly discovered record indicating weakness anywhere is prioritized for placing and testing. so far, 2.3 miles of pipeline have been relayed -- replaced rather than repaired. coming out life. that's what all of this testing is all -- come ought live, that's what all of this test something all about. reporting live from menlo park, tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, tom. firefighters say an unattended pan on a stove is responsible for an overnight fire doctor that displaced six people in newark. the fire started shortly after 10:00 last night at an apartment complex on cherry street. this is video shot by a resident. firefighters arrived after 7:00. >> i was up there watching tv and insmelled something burning. i thought it was a stove. i checked our stove.

nothing. i saw flames coming from next store. i went back inside, told my girlfriend, let's get out. an overnight crash sent a san francisco police officer and taxi driver to the hospital this morning. it's not a big surprise to people who work in the area. as allie rasmus explains, it's an intersection that needs if safety improvements. >> reporter: water gushed out and a taxi collided at the intersection. if happened just after 2:00 this morning. >> i was asleep and i heard a thump. >> reporter: investigators say the officer was driving down the street when the patrol car struck a taxi in the intersection. the force of the impact forced vehicles into the hydrant. >> that's the first time i heard anything -- that the water was shooting up. >> reporter: police say didn't -- police didn't say whether the officer was responding to

another call or how fast he was going. this is a four-way intersection but there are only stop signs in one direction. people below zero work nearby say they are not surprised a crash happened here. there's been a half a dozen crashes here in the last, you know, ten years that i've worked here. this thing needs a four-day stop sign. >> you see about a dozen taxicabs parked at the end of the street. that's because there is a taxi yard where the collision happened. so the taxi card may have been coming to or going from the yard when this occurred. a 26-year-old hayward man is facing felony charges. investigators say depok singh has admitted pouring vegetable oil at 150 headstones at a union city cemetery last week. he allegedly did it to "ward

voters. mitt romney is shifting attention away from his tax returns by accusing president obama by favoring a government- sensorred society -- government censored society. the obama team is pushing up the step to get mitt romney so release more of its tax records. the p obama campaign is running an ad in pennsylvania where mitt romney is asking any -- is making any if stops to release records. >> mitt romney admitted he's paid less than 15% in tax on $43 million in income. makes you wonder if he ever

that can protect men and women who are victims of trafficking. she says fund something also needed to help victims. the she claims there are 40,000 enslaved witnesses today and she plans to launch her own campaign to bring awareness to the area. we have new information on the shooting in alabama. the alleged gunman has surrendered. the police chief says this man surrendered in a town 50 miles away. surveillance video shows the area the man went to overnight. investigators do not believe this was a random act of violence. >> when he first walked up, there were people on the sidewalk and epstood for several plint, watching and everybody -- and he stood for

several minutes watching. >> we never saw the guy shooting. >> police say the rampage may be connected to a shooting a few miles away that left one person hurt. they are also investigating whether the shootings involve the shoot between motorcycle gangs. fire officials in placer county say the fire lines are holding near auburn which is 50% contained. officials say cooler temperatures are helping fire crews watting the -- bat. the flames. some 350 evacuees are awaiting word to see if they will be able to return to their homes today. four structures, including one home has been destroyed. flames have prompted evacuation orders for about 50 homes in san luis obispo county. the fire spread out to 640 acres now. they say it's 30% contained with full containment expected storm morning. no word on how the fire

started. a teenage the girl and a man in his early 20s are dead after a mass shooting at a toronto barbecue. police say hundreds of young people were at the barbecue when the fire broke out. it 19 other people were wounded. some were trampled in the commotion. pun person has been -- one person has been arrested. in turkey, no one was hurt after a big fire at a 42-foot building in istanbul. the building is made up of apartments and offices. hun yesterday were quickly evacuated -- hundreds were evacuated yesterday. a public hearing will be held to discuss a management plan at ocean beach. excess sand at the northern end is about 14 feet deep.

stocks have moved higher after a first few hours of trading on wall street thanks to earnings. the dow did up 82. the -- is up 82. the nasdaq is up 18. the s&p is up 9. investors had an initially negative reaction from from testimony ben bernanke. he delivered his semi-annual report before the san mateo banking committee. he said the country's economic
