taking place now in the south bay. new at noon, tara moriarty joins us live from san jose to explain what is behind this operation, with a rather strange name. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: that's right. it's called operation chicken hawk and it's the term police use for pedophiles. we'ral del ray avenue and police may be making a bust here shortly. we're waiting to see if they are confiscating evidence. more than 165 detectives took part in this sweep for child porn. ktvu was there when they busted two men at their homes this morning. this is a look from chopper 2 of officers taking into custody one man living in san jose. one of 20 search warrants executed throughout santa clara county this morning. another on vera lane. authorities are seizing evidence, hard drives, thumbnails they believe links the subjects to the distribution or possession of child porn. >> what we worry about most is the behavior escalating at some

point and having these people going to the community and start physically starting our children which is unacceptable to us. if we can get them in custody, get them in the system, actually make them be registered sex offenders, that is our first goal. >> reporter: we noticed an officer questioning a little girl in the backyard. some of these men have families. neighbors said they never would have known they were living next door to a pedophile. many cheered when they learned what authorities were doing today. it was a huge operation involving police teams from here to santa cruz, the fbi, u.s. postal service and department of homeland security also took part. one of the main ways investigators were able to pinpoint the suspects, decoy operations in chat rooms. coming up, one of the ways investigators are really able to speed up the process in cracking down on child pornography. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the state department of justice is expanding its

e-crime unit to give more protection to consumers. the attorney general harris today announced the creation of the privacy enforcement and protection unit, focusing on protecting consumers who share and store personal information on phones and computers, even the cloud, to enforce laws relating to privacy and identity theft. a 23-year-old man has been shot in fairfield. police say he was in front of an apartment building on dana drive when someone shot him about 10:00 last night. he was wounded in the torso, rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. back in september three people were injured in a shooting on the same block. a police chase through the streets of san francisco ended in a crash that sent an innocent couple to the hospital. the crash happened around 9:00 last night in the south of market neighborhood of 6th and bran ann streets. it started after plainclothes officer saw a vehicle driving

erratically. the suspect sped away when a patrol car tried to pull him over. police broke off the pursuit when they concluded it was too dangerous. the car continued on the street and slammed into the other car. two people inside had to be extricated. the suspect got out of the car and ran but police tracked him down a block away. it was a busy morning for paramedics in front of san francisco city hall. first, about 9:00 this morning a motorcyclist collided with a silver sedan near van ness avenue and grove street. paramedics transported the victim to the hospital. authorities haven't said what caused the accident or the extent of the injuries. a short while later, and just a few feet away from the motorcycle crash, a city worker in a white pickup truck hit a bicyclist. paramedics from the first accident rushed to the psyche lift's aid, no word on how bass the psyche lift is injured. road rage apparently to blame for a crash in freemont that seriously injured a mother and young daughter. police say 21-year-old joseph

ansari was speeding down freemont boulevard after getting into an argument with another driver yesterday. he lost control and the car jumped the sidewalk. it splamed into a 43-year-old woman who was pushing her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller both suffered serious head injuries. police arrested ansari who had only minor injuries. a car burst into flames in oakland, almost set an apartment building on fire. it started around 2:00 a.m. in a carport at 39th avenue and quickly streets qigly streets. fire officials told us the fire started on the passenger side of the car, not the engine. now residents fear this may have been arson. >> someone said they thought someone through a molotov cocktail to start the fire. >> no injuries were reported and no apartments were damaged. the cause of a house fire in sonoma county is being

investigated. it started around 3:30 this morning on old redwood highway in windsor. there were people inside the home but everyone made it out ok. one firefighter was taken to the hospital, we don't know his condition. p.g. p.g. -- pg & e was called to the scene because of live power lines down. coming up, another fire that created quite a show for some bay area train commuters. and why a local fire official was so concerned about a safety issue. city crews began clearing a homeless encampment out of san jose's kelly park. the city notified the homeless monday they would have to move by 7:00 a.m. today. some people had been living in the area along coyote creek for a year or more. recent fires prompted the city to evict them and some neighbors are glad. >> it's been terrible. i mean, they've been out here for months. since the wintertime and etc. going to be good to have them out of here finally. >> the city planned to give motel vouchers to those

lingering behind today so they will have time to contact social services. i said stop in a very hard way. >> the wife of san francisco suspended sheriff on the stand. what she says about the argument and video that created the scandal. parts of the bay area heating up. which neighborhoods will see the most temperature increases? the big adventure ahead for some bay area inner city kids.

syrian president bashar assad appointed a new defense minister today to replace the minister killed in yesterday's bombing. it's his first appearance since the rebel attack that killed three senior officials. government forces struck back today against the rebels with attack helicopters and shelling, also this morning russia and china again blocked efforts by the united nations security council to take action against the syrian government. they vetoed a resolution threatening nonmilitary sanctions. ross mirkarimi's wife is scheduled to testify for the second day. mirkarimi has been suspended as san francisco sheriff after pleading guilty in a domestic violence case.

mirkarimi's wife, eliana lopez testified about the argument that led to the charges against him. >> reporter: it was almost like a celebrity homecoming for eliana lopez, the south american actress and wife of the suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi arrived in a limo at city hall and greeted supporters. she took the stand and explained why she and the couple's son had been in venezuela since march. >> my husband was suspended without pay, so that was one of the reasons that i moved to venezuela. so, i can work and i have my own home. >> reporter: back in march, mirkarimi pled guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment charges stemming from an argument that bruised her arm. >> when he grabbed my arm i said stop in a very hard way. >> reporter: lopez testified they were arguing over whether she could take their son to venezuela. >> i don't think he was yelling. i think he was -- he was not happy with that. >> reporter: a neighbor ivory madison recorded this video of her cheerfully showing the

bruise on her arm in the argument. in the video she said her husband told her he was a powerful man but on the stand she denied her husband said that and suggested her words had been misinterpreted. >> your husband told you he's a powerful man more than once. >> you're asking me if he said that more than once? no. actually he never said that. that was my come piewtion of our conversation. he never said i'm a powerful man. >> reporter: lopez was on the stand for about a half-hour before the ethics commission decided to wrap up for the night but attorneys will continue their questioning of her at 5:00 this evening. also today, san francisco's ethics committee is set to make a critical decision tied to the mirkarimi case. the panel will decide whether mirkarimi's attorneys will be allowed to pursue perjury allegations against mayor ed lee. the lawyers want the panel to subpoena four people they believe may be able to show that the mayor lied under only twice when he testified before

year ago today in petaluma in an off-duty incident. he was shot to death trying to protect a friend from her violent ex-boyfriend. right now police officers, sheriffs' deputies and others are attending an informal lunch at the county jail to honor him. concern is growing for the safety of a 32-year-old santa clara man missing for a week. he's a french citizen, disappeared july 12th when he left his job in mountainview at lunchtime. police say he might have a handgun on him. investigators found tuvignon's cell phone but not his passport. he has brown hair, brown eyes, drives a black 2000 audi license plate 5rfu983. happy summer campers from the bay area on their way to the santa cruz mountains this noontime. over 130 campers gathered at the salvation army in san

francisco to prepare for their summer adventure. they boarded buses for a five-day experience. >> some of these kids have never been out of the part of the city in which they live. for some of them it's the first time out of the city. >> i'm excited to go to the pool and have fun. and do stuff. >> like, we get to do things positive, like, in the morning and afternoon. and then, they are fun, some classes, we get to cook and stuff. >> and more fun stuff to do. camp organizers say the kids will be able to hike, explore creeks, and much more. the lily pond in san francisco's golden gate park has been taken over by duckweed, an invasive species of frog. the department of fish and game says they can't clean up the pond until the frogs are removed. they hope to begin to implement a plan by fall. >> there was clear water and

there were five frogs over here, up to two weeks ago. now you see a goos every so often but they have -- i haven't seen any lilies for a year. >> officials say simply draining the pond could cause the frogs to migrate to other parts of the park. a new report by the government accountability office found a big loophole in national security. people who were banned from flying because they are considered terror threats were not banned from going to flight schools to learn how to fly planes. investigators discovered some of them had gone through flight training without a full background check. new security procedures are underway now to get rid of that loophole. the oregon man who stripped naked at portland's airport earlier this year has been found not guilty of indecent exposure. john bren ann took off his -- brennan took off his clothes in protest of what he viewed as invasive airport security measures. a judge ruled the bizarre was one of protest and therefore

protected by free speech. brennan was planning to fly to san jose for a business trip. multiple layers of clouds this morning, low clouds and high and mid-level clouds remain from a hurricane that same streaming up here, gave us a few sprinkles. a few clouds left and it's mostly sunny. although sonoma county airport, there are a few areas of clouds. the airport, just light drizzle. that's what they say at noon. otherwise it's mostly sunny, those clouds were so close but they pushed off towards the east. you can see on live storm tracker 2, even the rain as well moved off into the central sierra and will be out of the area. the clouds made for a kind of a balmy muggy morning and some of that humidity is still around, 75 fairfield. low 70s livermore and 70 redwood city. upper 60s near 70 for san jose and napa airport at 73. some locations warming up. we definitely bottomed out with cool temperatures on tuesday. courtesy of that system there.

that little low looks like it's going to ejet out of here tomorrow. as it does and the clouds move off to the east that allows high pressure to build in. the fog is not going anywhere so the coast is going to stay in the 60s but inland will rebound fast. maybe a little today but more noticeable tomorrow. another system dropping down in the gulf of alaska. it will keep low pressure along the coast. temperatures are actually going to get back to seasonal normals, that means 60s, 70s, 80s. mostly sunny though, fog near the coast. higher humidity, a muggy pattern today. 70s and 80s. if you're far enough from the coast you have 70s but a lot of 80s. mostly sunny skies but a lot of fog is lurking off-shore. it will be back tonight into tomorrow. warmer temperatures to the east and also maybe towards the santa clara valley with low to mid-80s. we've been 20 degrees below average, some of the inland temperatures. it makes sense, we're rebounding three to five a day. we'll continue that scene. it looks like mostly sunny and warmer weather at least away

"mad men" leading wait with 17 nominations tied with "american horror story." >> the nominations in the drama series category are "boardwalk empire." "breaking bad." "downn tin abby." strong earns from ibm and other technology companies nudging the stock market higher but weak economic reports keeping the gains in check. taking a live look at the big board the dow up 32, nasdaq up 23 and s&p up three. one of those disappointing reports this morning, the labor department announced 386,000 workers filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week. that's up 34,000 more than the week before. labor analysts say carmakers are temporarily shutting down plants to gear up for new models and that makes this an especially volatile month for workers in the auto industry. the human touch may disappear at a struggling national retailer. jc penney hopes to get rid of all checkout clerks in a year or two, replacing them with electronic counters like those at grocery stores. the company plans to reinvest the savings in customer service. part of an effort to return the

tore to profitability. another delay in the opening of the new casino matrix in san jose. a hearing scheduled for this morning has been pushed back to monday. the card room was supposed to open in april but the owner couldn't get a permit in time. if the city approves the permit monday it could open in a few weeks and provide jobs for 300 people. two homes up for sale in berkeley for one dollar a piece but as you can imagine there's a catch. this morning we got a look at the two buildings on walnut street. they are on the site of a future ace hardware store and the developer is required to try to sell them before tearing them down. the hope is to find a buyer who can move the home to another site. new at noon -- the coast guard command headquartered in alameda is under new management. a change of command ceremony took place this morning.

>> admiral carl schultz takes over the top job in the 11th district. they handle coastal duties from california south to the international waters off mexico and central america as well as arizona, nevada and utah. schultz came from his job as the coast guard's director of government and public affairs. >> the 11th coast guard district team excited to be here. i couldn't think of a place i would rather be standing today with the responsibilities that lie ahead and the team that i have the privilege of joining. >> he replaces rear admiral castillo as the 11th district commander. the post office is warning that it will not be able to make a key payment unless it gets help from congress. the u.s. postal service must pay $5.5 billion to a health benefits fund for future retirees. it's due august 1st and congress is not likely to

help. the house is preparing to leave for august recess. it would be the first default ever for the u.s. post office. her face captivated millions. now archeologists believe they may have found the body of the real mona lisa. archeologists say they believe bones found under a convent in florence, italy may be lisa garadini, the famous portrait is thought to be a portrait of her, who joined a convent after the death of her husband. archeologists plan to use dna testing to identify the identity of the remains. we have a winner. a man who claimed the super lotto plus jackpot. the winning ticket was bought last month at a rohnert park convenience store. the winner is described as being really nervous with the sudden cash. the market will win $65,000 for selling the winning ticket. today, she's back.
