colorado this morning. a mass shooting inside a packed movie theater during a late night showing of the dark knight rises. at least 14 people are confirmed dead and 508 others are -- and 50 others are hurt. allie rasmus is in the studio with details on the suspect an how the shooting unfolded. allie. >> reporter: it was carried out on a completely unsuspecting crowd of people in a packed movie theater. it was around 11:30 our time when this happened. according to witnesses the gunman first released a canister of tear gas. people in the theater were disoriented, confused because the tear gas went off during one of the peak action scenes of the movie. then he went to the front of the theater and opened fire. ten people were killed at the theater. four others died at a nearby hospital. the youngest victim reported is a six-year-old child being treated at colorado children's

hospital. this is cell phone video of people pouring out of the movie plex. there was a lot of confusion about exactly what was going on. one thought it was fire works. one man described the chaos. >> i saw at least four maybe five people that were limping, wounded, slightly bloody. the most i saw was a girl who was pretty much covered in blood and she didn't have any wounds on her. so it kind of -- it made me think the worst. >> police have the gunman in custody. they tracked him down in the back of the movie theater parking lot near that white car. the gunman is a man in his 20s. police believe he acted alone. they did recover a gas mask, rifle, and handgun and one other weapon that the gunman left behind inside the theater. the man told police he had explosives at his home. the gunman's apartment complex has been evacuated. it's in lock down right now as

police verify that additional threat. in the last 15 minutes president obama released a statement responding to this tragedy. he said he's shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic colorado shooting. we will continue to bring you the latest updates on the story as they come in. allie rasmus ktvu. >> thanks. overnight people around the bay area flocked to movie theaters to see the dark knight rises. you are looking at video that was taken this morning at a movie theater in emeryville. we talked to some about this tragedy that unfolded in colorado. >> i don't see why anyone would do anything like that. it was a pg13 movie. it was family fun good times. it wasn't like anything super violent. i like to think it wouldn't happen here but i guess it can happen anywhere. it's definitely a sobering experience. >> i don't have words for this. i just can't imagine that.

it's unfathomable. >> security guards we spoke with in emery vail were on hand for the large crowds. but they said they were not aware of the shooting in colorado. we'll have continue coverage of the shooting in colorado. here is developing news at this hour in the south bay. authorities are at the 3800 block of ugera road. a possible home invasion and shooting. right now it's unclear who may have been shot but we are told that there is heavy police activity at this scene. you see the map right there. we have a news crew on its way and we'll have a live report and pictures within the next half hour. the wife of san francisco suspend sheriff ross mirkarimi will appear in the courtroom at 9:00 this morning. eliana lopez will ask a judge to lift the court order preventing her husband from having any contact with her or

the couples son. this so-called stay away order stems from a domestic violence incident that could end her husband's political career. >> it was great to see ross. i just cannot wait the moment we are going to be together. ross you and me here in san francisco. >> lopez spoke after testifying before san francisco's ethic commission last night. she admitted her husband grabbed her arm and caused a bruise during a new years eve argument but does not consider that incident to be domestic abuse. mayor ed lee says that same incident makes mirkarimi up fit to serve as sheriff. mayor ed lee is celebrating a victory. last night the ethics commission announced it will not issue subpoenas to look into whether the mayor committed perjury during his earlier testimony. mayor ed lee strongly denies those allegations. and overnight they issued a

statement. police are investigating three burglaries on the uc berkeley campus. it happened between last tuesday and last saturday at the foothill residence halls and mullford hall. the bay area will play host to president obama and mitt romney. the republican presidential nominee has three fundraisers this sunday. there is a $50,000 per person luncheon in wood side. a late afternoon at the san francisco fairmont. and another $55,000 per dinner in fair heights. >> president obama will stop in the east bay on monday. he has three fundraisers planned. although romney has been raising more money than the

president in recent months, california and specifically the bay area continue to be cash cows for the obama campaign. >> this is essentially the easy money to raise. the donors that give money every time and willing to max out. the candidates are largely coming out for those. >> president obama has a $35,000 a plate luncheon in piedmont before his fox theater fundraiser. political analysts estimate the candidates and political action committees could raise as much as $3 billion for the presidential race. for the first time u.s. service members will be allowed to march in uniform in a gay pride parade. about 300 service members have signed up for the san diego pride event. troops usually are not allowed to wear their uniforms in any parades. but the defense department says it's making a one-time exception for all service members this year after the navy reportedly granted its sailors permission to march in the san diego event in uniform. the announcement comes weeks

after the pentagon announced the military was designated june as gay pride month. >> signs have been posted after a great white shark was spotted offshore. just afternoon yesterday a helicopter captured photos of the shark. estimated to be 14-18 feet long. you see there the pictures it was spotted be the helicopters pilot about 50 yards from a swimmer. authorities will keep warning signs posted at area beaches including rio del mar and sea scape until they are sure the shark has moved along. people near half-moon bay are trying to gain access to martin's beach. coming up at 4:48 why the public is being kept out and who else is getting involved. this morning california fish and game will capture and tag deer along interstate 280 in san mateo county. it's part of a six-month study founded by cal tran intended to cut down on the number of

clouds from yesterday also moved east and high pressure builds in. it will be warmer mainly inland. there is still fog on most of the coast. not completely sold out. today into tomorrow there is one forecast model that cools us down by sunday. it will get back in the 80s and low 90s. there is a lot of fog by the coast. 80s for some through the interior. livermore 85. santa rosa 80. a little warmer toward napa. 75 san mateo. 74 hayward. antioch one of the warmest at 87 degrees. brought it down a little bit on sunday and leave it there for a whole hum pattern there as we go into early next week. two people killed in a plane crash in alaska. the pilots connection to the bay area. a near catastrophe the damage caused to a big hotel you can see there by powerful storm in kentucky. >> there is road work. they are picking it up now. it's causing a little bit of a slow down. ♪

good morning. we have fog out there. once that retreats it will be warmer inland. low to mid 80s. maybe a few upper 80s near the coast. >> thanks, steve. hotel workers have a lot of cleaning up to do after severe storm swept think that area. winds over 60 miles an hour partially tore off the roof of the crown plaza hotel. you can see the mess there all the debris ended up scattered over cars in the parking lot below. no one was injured luckily. but a man and his granddaughter elsewhere were killed when a bolt of lightning started a fire in their house during the same storm. a small plane crashed in alaska. this morning we are learning more about the two people killed on board. the plane crashed about 40 miles north of fair banks wednesday afternoon. the victims were a couple in their 60s. they were from queensland

australia but the pilot was a member of a fight club in palo alto. the cause of the crash is under investigation. new details about a man that killed himself and six others in a suicide attack on a bus full of israelis in bulgaria. he tried to rent a car before wednesday's attack but was turned down because his id was suspicious. we first showed you surveillance video you see here of the allegationed bombing on e morning news yesterday and authorities say he had a bomb inside his backpack. they are using his fingerprints, dna and fake michigan driver's license to determine his identity. a member of proposal state of board of trustees has resigned over his handling of the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. steve stepped down as chairman but remained a board member until last night. internal investigation led but former fbi director luis freeh

because of fundraising practices at a school in oakland. st. andrews school requires its students to ask for donations outside of bart stations. the children sometimes work at night and not always with an adult. starting august 1st, bart will no longer allow students to ask for money at its station without an adult or during school hours. it is still dark outside. sal has been looking at the roadways. a lot of people out there or is it pretty calm out there? >> they are picking up road work. i was just look agent that. westbound 80 at the mccarthur maze. you can see some of the lanes. but the damage is done. we have slow traffic. you see those middle lanes are closed here for the construction work. now we see the truck backing up and cones are being picked up. there is a big backup here coming down to the mccarthur

maze because it all winds down to one and traffic coming in on the east shore freeway will be slow. when you get to the toll plaza, there is no backup at all. the traffic does look good get into san francisco. and this morning on northbound 280 that is a nice looking drive out of downtown san jose. let's go to steve. >> thank you very much. a very good morning. friday morning. low clouds around. but temperatures a little cool for some. mild for others but the low that has been controlling our weather for the entire week is finally saying goodbye. as it moves north that will allow warmer air to move in. not a lot but some. dense fog around the bay. as it comes down a little bit it topped out tuesday. temperatures have been coming up at least 3-4 each day. we will continue that today. 50s and 60s. a little cool for some, mild for others. there goes the low right there. there another one dropping in behind that to keep low pressure along the west coast. you see it right there. it will not be as strong as the one we had.

temperatures will come up a little bit here. tropical clouds from yesterday which gave us higher humidity. they are also long gone. it will be warmer inland but not much of a change coast and bay. fog will be near the coast for some. a little breezy at times out of the west, southwest. 60s and 70s closer to the coast and with your weekend always in view it will be warmer on saturday. i think it will chop down a few degrees and level it off and take it into next week. >> thanks, steve. tomorrow surfers and activists are planning a protest at martin's beach. right now the public is not allowed past a gate that marks private land leading up to the water near half-moon bay. this land came under new ownership and that owner blocked public access to a beach. an attorney for the owner says this is a fundamental property right. the state coastal commission is investigating. brentwood residence are upset about the chopping down of young lip testees on central

avenue. the school says the trees were on its property and had become a nuisance to the outdoor play areas. some say it's a bad thing to do and concerned about the birds that made the trees their homes. east bay park officials say the tree cutting is legal. time is 4:49. a former hospital technician accused of infecting 30 people with hepatitis c is facing federal charges. david was arrested yesterday add a massachusetts hospital where he is being treated. investigators say he injected himself with stolen drugs and contaminated syringes. they say he was a traveling technician that may have infected people in at least six states. a new money scandal that involves a federal agency already linked to some very outrageous spending. >> and a popular fast food chain is expanding in the bay area. how this is linked to a controversy over gay marriage.

overnight shoot showing of the dark knight rises. as century 16th theater in aurora that is nine miles from denver. police say the suspected gunman a 24-year-old man is in custody and they have recovered a rifle and two other guns. but as you can see from this live picture people still out there at the theater. a big shock to all of the pay trents that were there. the fbi is heading to the scene. we'll have more throughout the morning. this morning police are on the hunt for a person of interest in the stabbings of three homeless people in the los angeles area. police say notes signed by david ben keys has been left add all crime scenes. keys is a -- holding a rifle and a knife. police say it's still unclear whether keys himself is involved in the slayings or if someone is using keys name to attract attention. time now is 4:53.

new and embarrassing expenses have come to light at the general services administration. a new review shows the agency spent more than a quarter million dollars for a one-day award ceremony not far prosecute pentagon -- not far from the pentagon back in 2006. the gsa says under the current administration spending on all conferences and ceremonies has been suspended. the fast food chain expanding in the bay area but announcement by companies president could hurt the popularity here. chic-fil-a plans to open up stores in the bay area. the companies president has publicly said that it supports quote the biblical definition of the family unit. that is in reference to the defense of marriage. that has customers who already like chill phil -- chic-fil-a's food considering where they spend their money.
