theater in colorado. >> good afternoon, i am tori campbell. >> a gunman opened fire during the blockbuster in aurora, colorado. >> 59 wounded and 12 people killed. he was arrested in the parking lot without incident and is in police custody. we have team coverage and how police are responding to this. we begin with allie rasmus on the suspected gunman. >> we are learning more about the gunman. 24-year-old james holmes was a science student at the university of colorado's medical school. he was in the process of dropping out when this happened. they describe him as a loaner. they believe he planned and carried out the mass shooting on his own. >> there is a shooting in the auditorium. >> at least one person is shot. they are saying there are

hundreds of people running around. >> reporter: people were 30 minutes into watching the batman premiere when the gunman burst in. and detonated smoke canisters and then he started shooting. >> he came down with the gun in my face. 3 feet away from me at this point. i didn't know what to do. i was terrified. i jumped forward into the aisle and buried myself in there and hide myself. he was shooting people behind me and the casings were on me. >> there was a eresidents eery pause. >> he was going up the stairs and reloading. we kind of crawls down the stairs and ran out. ran out the theater. > >> and in the parking lot of the theater, he had an assault rifle and three guns with him. he was dressed in tactical gear. >> he was wearing a ballistics

helmet and the leggings. and a throat protector and groin protector and a gas mask and black tactical gloves. blocks away from the theater, bomb squad members used a ladder truck to search his third story apartment. >> they discovered it was booby trapped. >> various incendiary and chemical devices and tip wires. aurora police chief said the complex is evacuated and they are trying to figure out how to safely go in and clear the booby traps out. >> allie rasmus. >> ktvu news. again, he is identified as 24-year-old james holmes and he lives in aurora, colorado. he started dropping out of the university of colorado school of medicine. he graduated in the san diego

area. they have nod found any links between holmes and the terrorists groups and at this time his motive resist unknown. they came toe this home in san diego. it is the home of the alleged gunman's mother who told the local media there, she turned on the news and here what happened and immediately feared her son was some how involved. when police arrived at her house, she reportedly said quote. you have the right person. the alleged gunman's family released this statement. it reads in part. our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the family asen friends of those involved. we are still trying to process the information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy. >> president obama cut short a campaign swing for the deadly rage. he was informed early this morning about what happened at the theater. he altered an appearance to address the shooting. >> we will take every step

>> we don't have a lot of problems down here. and we are okay with this. as shame. i can't imagine something like that could happen and it does. >> a san jose police tells spokesman they will be doing checks across the city today. in light of this morning's mass shooting. >> in san francisco, they were lined up to get into the theater for the premiere of "the dark knight" rises and a police spokesman told us they are in patrols in the city in response to the killing shooting. >> they haven't received threats and they aren't taking any chances. >> if they see anything suspicious. >> and we ask them to contact san francisco police department and also for the personnel that work at movie theaters. we ask them to contact police immediately. matthew crisman said he went to the movie in san jose with his girlfriend and didn't find out about the mass

shooting until later. my mother knew i was going to the midnight showing and she called to make sure i was okay. because she heard about it on the news. and you know, slightly worried it night have a similar effect elsewhere. >> reporter: most of the showings all morning long have been selling out. the manager here toll me off camera, security is never a major concern for them and he tells me he has no immediate plans to make changes even in light of the mass shooting in colorado. >> alex savage, channel 2 news. thank you, alex. here is a recap of the tragic events in colorado. they are holding a former medical student identified as james homes. he entered a crowded movie theater during a midnight showing of the new batman movie. he set up tear gas and opened fire. >> 71 people were shot. 12 of those people were killed and the shooting victims ages

ranged from 3-months-old to 45 years old. >> police are now at holmes apartment in aurora and they say say it is booby trapped. and nearby buildings have been evacuated. >> stay tuned with ktvu and we will update you later in the newscast and throughout the day. our eric rasmussen is on his way to aurora, colorado right now. in other news, in the last hour we got confirmation that two gang members have been indicted for the shooting that killed 1-year-old hiram lawrence in oakland. it had to do with a videotaping. >> they explained the serious charges the two suspects are facing. >> reporter: we can update you now on that. three suspects are being charged in the murder that took the life of 3-month-old hiram

lawrence. they believe the bullet that struck the toddler came from the gun from someone who was 16 years old. this morning, authorities involved in the investigation announced 30-year-old, and 29-year-old houston nathaniel and 16-year-old fredrick coalman. they are members of the acorn gang and believe they were shooting rival gang members. following a music video shoot outside a market that killed the toddler and wounded six others. this is one of my proudest moments of a chief. >> i was walking in the blocks of the community and i met with the family and went to the hospital and visited him. hiram when he was alive and i felt very, very, a lot of pain watching a young kid lay in a hospital bed. >> there is nothing we can could to bring back the child that was killed last november or heal the wounds suffered by those who were shot and

survived. hopefully the charges we are announcing today will help bring some closure for those people. they filed a criminal complaint against coalman who will be tried as an adult. it is two shootings on november 6 that left two teenage boys wound. they were able to make the arrests and had to infiltrate the gang or what. >> coalman will make a court appearance in two hours. >> all three are likely to face the death penalty or life in prison. >> channel 2 news. thank you, tara. >> we are bringing you live breaking pictures from chopper two from the hayward police headquarters where the first floor is evacuated after a suspicious white powder is discovered. before 10 this morning, an employee was opening mail when she discovered an envelope with

no return address. the white powder leaked from the envelope and they are looking live at a close up of some firefighters there just outside the police department. the haz-mat team is testing the powder to see if it is dangerous. dispatchers are still work on the second floor. the fire department said the woman who opened the mail is doing fine. an emotional reunion and the court ruling that allowed them to have the first kiss in seven months. steve paulson is up to tell you which parts of the area have a weekend warm up. >> this is announced there. and involving closely this man and the beating of a former priest.

. suspended sheriff reunited with his life after a judge lifted a protective order keeping the pair apart. >> we have more on the case and david joins us live from san francisco. >> reporter: well, the sheriff called it a break in a seven month long nightmare. he was able to have contact again with his wife.

>> reporter: suspended sheriff and his wife hugged and kissed this morning minutes after a criminal court judge lifted a protective order that kept the two separated since january. >> how do you feel? >> reporter: the protective order was placed after he was charged with domestic violence after bruising her arm. >> it was friday, july 13th is the last time we were able to be together and holding hands. >> he pleaded guilty to and she went to venezuela. and that caused more delays. she testified at the ethics commission hearing. >> we are extremely happy. and the best thing is not me. it is not ross.

. for the past few days. they were able to forget about problems in europe and today, they are back in the forefront. stock market plunged 6% and it is barring courses spiked after the government asked for a financial lifeline. the dow is currently down 111 and nasdaq down 33 and s&p down 11. if you are planning to return this year. you can lock in the plans. and the airlines will start the usual fall fare sale on august 26th.
