hospital. and good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, july 21. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. welcome back. nice and rested i hope? >> absolutely. >> let's get right to work and check in with rosemary arose co on this weekend forecast. a warmer day today, 2 to 4 six degrees warmer for the afternoon. 94 in concord, even the city, 67 yesterday, mostly sunny and 74 for the afternoon. we're waking up with numbers up at this hour. the current conditions and what you can expect for your saturday, as well as sunday, coming up. we begin with continuing coverage of the colorado theater massacre. at this hour, police including demolition experts experts are outside the apartment of the subject, james eagan holmes. authorities so far have been

unable to diffuse the express i haves and boobytraps inside. the threeter in aurora remains closed. police say it's a massive crime scene that will take days to process. law enforcement including agents from the f.b.i. and a.t.f. have been gathering evidence and are still trying to figure out what led to the killing rampage. 12 people died and 58 others were injured. 11 remain in critical condition. this was one of the largest mass shootings in u.s. history. >> the thing that affects me most is just seeing that young girl just laying there just shot. she's just a little kid still. you know, like how -- like it's just not right. >> and coming up in 30 minutes, we will go live to aurora, colorado, for more on what investigators are doing this morning. aurora's police chief became emotional when describing what yesterday was like for his own officers. >> our cops went through a lot. they rushed people out of that -- that theater, into police

cars. -- >> chief dan oates says the officers arrived within 60 to 90 seconds of the first 911 calls and helped the dozens of victims with gun shout wounds. in all 200 officers and deputies responded from two different counties. the chief said psychologists from his department will be available to help officers cope with what they witnessed. more information is coming out about the suspect. james eagan holmes is described as quiet and intelligent, but also a loner. neighbors say he wouldn't even acknowledge them in a hallway. he grew up in salinas but his family moved to san diego. he graduated from u.c. riverside. holmes will be arraigned monday morning. authorities hope to enter his boobytrapped apartment later today. the four story building remains evacuated as the bomb squad looks for a safe way to get inside. technicians have spotted trip wires, jars of liquid and containers filled with ammo,

wire works and combustible powders. investigators say his chemistry background would have made it easy for him to build explosives. aurora police say when james holmes entered the movie theater he was prepared and dressed head to toe in tactical gear. >> the suspect was dressed all in black wearing a ballistics helmet. a tactical ballistic vest. ballistic leggings, a throat protecter and a groin protecter and a gas mask. >> holmes was arrested at his car, parked at the back of the theater. police say he told them, quote, i am the joker. they also say he died his hair red like the characterrer in the batman movie and had an arsenal of firearms. his weapons included an a.r. 15 assault rifle that can fire 50 rounds a minute. a remington 12 gauge shotgun and two .40 caliber glock handguns one of which was found in the car. police say all of the weapons were purchased legally over the past six months and all are weapons that can be legally purchased here in california.

in the wake of the shooting, the studio behind the dark knight rises is holding off announcing box office totals. the movie is projected to gross around $200 million this weekend. the wall street journal reports warner brothers will now release the figures on monday. meanwhile, the studio is expected to cancel next week's premiers in tokyo and mexico city. a lavish event in paris was cancelled yesterday after the shooting. christopher nolan, director of the dark knight rises released a statement about the shooting. he said the movie theater is my home and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place is such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. nolan says he was speaking on behalf of the entire cast and crew. grief counselors will be helping be reefed families today. authorities have begun note vying relatives of the victims who did not survive the shooting. new information we're learning

about those victims in just about 25 minutes. police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in san francisco. it happened around 9:00 last night on nichols way. officers say the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital where he died of his injuries. no suspects are in custody. police are also looking for a gunman overnight in a shooting in east oakland. at least one person was taken to the hospital before 8 last night. police haven't released information about the victim's conditions. this morning, the f.b.i. is investigating after five bay area police departments received letters containing white powder. an investigators say more letters could be on the way. the first letter was discovered yesterday around 10 a.m. by someone sorting mail at the hayward police station. has hat teams respond -- hazmat teams responded and determined the substance was flower. similar n.f.l.es were found at sanly llano, berkeley, oakland and union city police stations. >> i think somebody mas an wish

law enforcement. that's just speculation. and i don't know why, but it's just a weird pattern. >> investigators say none of the letters had a return address but all were postmarked at the main oakland post office. iowa police are now calling the case of two missing girls an abduction. 10-year-old lyric and her eight- year-old does i been elizabeth disappeared after rising their bikes near a lake a week ago. a search of the lake yesterday turned up nothing. investigators are classifying the case because they are confident the girls did not drown, nor get lost. the father of one of the girls, who has a long criminal record, walked out of a lie detector test. he claimed police accused him of hurting his daughter and niece a 28-year-old sacramento man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the robber's fire in placer county. authorities say byron mason was taken into custody early yesterday morning and was booked into the placer county jail. firefighters say it appears a

pyrotechnic device started the fire which destroyed one house and four out buildings and forced hundreds to evacuate. the robbers fire is fully contained. your time now is 7:07. and it looks like we could be in for a really nice weekend. rosemary trying to deliver up a nice warm forecast. >> specially if you like it warm. temperatures nearing 100 degrees as we get outside this morning, we're already up by a few degrees in most cases. anywhere from two to four deis, and in land up to 6 degrees. antioc in the 60s this morning. low 60s in livermore. you can see mostly clear skies outside the door. we have low clouds hugging the coast but those are going to burn away as well. partly cloudy skies expected for the coast, it's actually going to be a nice beach day, 60s to mid 70s in some areas right around santa cruz for the afternoon. 55 right now san francisco, 60 in oakland, 59 in hayward, low to mid 50s in some areas, so a bit of a cool start, but not by much. we'll warm up rapidly.

right now firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in hayward. allie rasmus has just arrived on scene and is talking to crews there. hi, allie. >> reporter: this fire started around 6:00. you can see the damage behind us. this is a residential area knee the hayward hills. the building you're looking at affected by the fire is a separate house in the back of a larger residence. there was one person living here. she got out ok when the fire started but to tell us more about this fire fight this morning is chief scott anderson with hayward fire. how did it look like it started? >> it appears there was unattended cooking going on this morning. prior to the fire starting. >> you're saying the person who lives here saw the fire start, really? >> yes. she said she was sleeping, noticed -- she got woke up by the fire. and attempted to move what was on fire and it got so large she had to exit if building. >> there was a pan on the stove

sounds like? >> that's what it appears to be. we have investigators coming to confirm that. >> did she try to put it out herself and is that always a good idea or -- >> it's not a good idea. we always tell residents to exit the building and call 911. >> did she have a fire hydrant -- or i mean an extinguisher? >> that's unknown. >> at this point what do you have to do here? still a couple of fire engines and police crews here. >> right now we have some of our crews stowing their equipment so they can go back into service. we're going to leave one crew here to finish mopping up the interior of the structure. >> and if we show the building, you can see even though it's on the other side of this fence, you can see where there is a lot of the damage. most of this house, the smaller home is pretty fairly damaged, destroyed, right? >> yes. it's completely gutted inside. >> but the person who lives here is ok and she escaped unharmed? >> yes, she did. >> so that is good news. this is again in hayward, and

one person living in this home was able to get identity of the him, was not harmed by the fire, and fire crews here in hayward are on the scene and they are finishing wrapping up their work. live in hayward, allie rasmus. right now police are holding a newspaper outside the suspect's apartment in that mass shooting in colorado. we want to listen in. >> this investigation, and so, we don't want to lose evidentiary value be anything that's in there we will be using as evidence, so we're going to be very cautious of how we deal with things and take things out, and make sure that they're handled in the best manner for our investigation. >> do you think there's any chance that you'll be able to dismantle everything without any explosions? is that -- is that the current goal right now? to try and get it all? >> all right. >> we just lost that picture from that press conference there in aurora, colorado. but authorities talking about how they're going to assess and attack this situation going on

inside the suspect's apartment, full of explosives and boobytraps. they've known this for 24 hours now, so it's a very touchy subject. they could go send a robot in, but it could start a fire, and other apartments are in that building. they want to like she was saying try to retain as much evidence as possible inside that suspect's apartment, too, at least. a very delicate situation, an ongoing situation in colorado. >> and of course we're continue to follow that situation for you. we have reporters there, obviously watching for the latest developments. we'll have more on that and news from around the world when we come back.

three of the dead are children. authorities say the attack took place today at a compound owned by a militant in the svindal village. he is a revival of another prominent commander in that area who is an ally of the pakistan taliban. a japanese rocket has lifted off headed for the international space station. >> three. two. one. ignition. >> that unmanned rocket is of supplies and equipment and is expected to doc at the i.s.s. next friday. in this morning's weekly address, president obama is asking americans to pray for the victims of the colorado tragedy. >> we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings. such evil is senseless. beyond reason. >> in response to the shooting, president obama cut short a florida campaign trip to fly back to washington. he has spoken to aurora's mayor and colorado's governor, offering his support and federal assistance. >> this is a time for each of

to us look into our hearts, and remember how much we love one another. and how much we love and how much we care for our great country. >> presumptive republican presidential nominee mitt romney echoed the president's sentiments. both men have pulled their campaign ads in colorado. we have not heard if they will keep their scheduled visits to the bay area next week. romney has scheduled fund- raisers in san francisco and wood side for tomorrow, while the president had planned events in peidmont and oakland. neither man has announced if they will visit with victims' families and emergency responders in aurora, but president obama has ordered in flags be flown at half staff. the flags include those at the white house and all federal buildings. they will remain at half staff through sun set wednesday. ross meshing ream and his wife spent a little time together after a judge listed a stay away order.

if couple kissed and held hands after the judge announced his decision yesterday but they were not together lock elena lopez announced she was going back to venezuela so she can start on a new movie sunday. >> finally i can talk to my husband. it's fantastic. >> this is victory. we're partners without being able to be partners. >> mirkarimi has been unable to make contact with lopez since his arrest in january for domestic violence. following an argument where he bruised her arm. lopez returned to san francisco this week to testify before the city's ethics commission which is scheduled to make a recommendation on whether mirkarimi should be removed from his position as sheriff. we sat down with ill jan that lopez after her day in court. the actress says she doesn't know when or if she will return to san franz co permanently but says she does want a fresh start with her husband and their son theo. >> ross and i realized that we

love each other, that the most important thing for us is theo and our family. that in our heart, we really never want to be apart. >> when asked what would happen if the board of supervisors decides to remove her husband from office, lopez's lawyer chimed in and said they would sue the city. the second suspect in a drive-by shooting that killed a san francisco father and his two sons four years ago is scheduled to face a judge next week. fredo reyes is scheduled to be arraigned on tuesday after making an initial court appearance yesterday. prosecutors say reyes was in the car when edwin ramos opened fire on 48-year-old anthony bologna and his two sons in 2008 after mistaking one of them for a rival gang member. ramos was sentenced to three consecutive sentences for the killings in june. police say three reputed members of a violence oakland gang have been charged with the murder of a toddler. prosecutors say 23 month old hiram lawrence, jr. was

says traffic reporter mike nolan was on a single engine cessna that crashed last night in corona. the plane went down in a residential area, taking out power lines and starting a small fire. no injuries were reported on the ground. >> there was a city manager dream developer. this was a fellow who -- a memorial service will be held today for a lafayette couple who died in a plane crash last weekend. peter and mona branna were killed when their plane crashed in central utah as they were fly toke aspen, colorado last friday. peter branna was a developer in lafayette and director of the california bank of commerce. today's service is at 1:00 at community presbyterian church in danville. the worst drought since 1956 has farmers in the midwest and the corn belt re-evaluating their livelihood. the soil is fairly dry and water reserves are low. so low that the farmer is sacrificing one crop to save another. he will turn off the irrigation

pumps to his christmas trees in order to keep the water flowing to his money making crop, peaches. >> there are some farmers in the drought belt that are singing the blues and re- evaluating their risks. >> aside from the drought and the hot conditions, there was also an early spring and farmers say that combination will likely leave many of them in financial ruin. and also lead to higher prices for produce sold at stores. drought conditions are taking their toll on an arkansas lake killing thousands of fish. lack of oxygen in the water is killing off cat fish, bass and several other types of fish. the lake was drained about a year ago because of construction. then the drought hit. and the lake hasn't been able to fill back up. experts say fish kills are a normal part of the ecosystem. last weekend it was a little chilly in the bay area. this weekend, rosemary a different story as temperatures as the result to warm up especially inland. >> yeah. a little uncomfortable for many out there, especially for valley locations where the numbers will warm well into the 90s for the afternoon. this morning take a look, the

winds very calm and light. we have just a very, very light on shore brief moving west southwesterly to 7 miles per hour. for the most part, very calm. low clouds hugging the coastline, mostly sunny elsewhere. as we start the morning, 50s along the coast. we have 50s in parts of the north bay. a lot of 60s already out there. areas like napa, fairfield, antioc, livermore. as i put this into motion, by noontime it's going to be quite warm in some spots. widespread orange for areas near santa rosa, talking low 80s already by the noon hour for concord, antioc, upper 80s. san jose, about 80 or so. 70s for the bay area. 70s along the peninsula. that was the lunchtime and now as we get into the afternoon, widespread red for the inland spots. shades of pink indicating the central valley will hit 100 degrees even above in many cases. some of the hottest spots could hit 100 degrees. could be worse. it is mid to late july. we will look at these numbers,

and well, i guess be happy that it doesn't last too long. today, numbers are going to be at their hottest in many spots. a slight cool down expected for sunday. monday we hold onto the warmth but by tuesday into wednesday, pretty good. back into the mid and upper 80s for the valleys, low 60s for the coast. back to you. at least 21 people were burned during a fire walk at a motivational event in san jose. they walked on hot coles during the tony robins unleash the power from within seminar thursday night at the convention center. this is youtube video of a previous fire walking event. the san jose fire department says at least three of the victims had second and third degree burns. one participant told ktvu everyone was warned that they might get burns or blisters. >> get your focus and attention away from that, and look into the power within yourself, and focus on just walking on the fire. and -- >> firefighters say the event had the proper permits and fire and medical workers were on

12 killed, 58 injured this morning. we're learning more about the suspect, the dangers still facing visit garys right now and the -- investigators right now and the unanswered questions. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. minutes ago we learned colorado police will soon enter the apartment of the suspect james holmes. they say removing the trip wire could include detonation, a loud explosion, and possibly a fire. reporter rene marsh is live in aurora with the police investigation. rene. >> reporter: yes, good morning, mike and claudine. it's a days see situation there over at james holmes' apartment complex. we can tell you right now the fire department and a.t.f. are staged there at the apartment, and investigators say they believe at least a

dozen explosive devices are inside of that apartment. one investigator, according to law enforcement officials here in aurora, saying that those devices are, quote, sophisticated. local and federal authorities are at the suspect's apartment building this morning. one he allegedly rigged with explosives. officials say it appears there are incendiary devices and possibly chemical elements, all linked together with wires. and are unsure how long it will take to diffuse. >> it is a very vehiclessing problem how to enter that apartment -- vexing problem how to enter that apartment safely. i've never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there. >> reporter: hundreds of residents were evacuated friday from five apartment buildings, including the one where holmes lives. meanwhile we're learning the names of some of those killed in friday's deadly shooting. jessica ghawi was an aspiring sports reporter. she narrowly escaped a deadly shooting in toronto last no.

me kayla medic's company said it took 19 hours before the family learned of her death. alex sullivan was at the theater to celebrate his 27th birthday, and matt mcquinn was killed attempting to shield his girlfriend, who was also hit by bullets but is recovering in a local hospital. >> explosive devices. >> reporter: we can tell you as far as the investigation over at the apartment goes, at holmes' apartment, we can expect we will see lots of activity today. they are far from done, and an estimated 100 officials over there, including federal officials, because it is such a dangerous situation inside of that apartment. some of them will be outfitted in bomb suits. >> rene, a quick question. you talked about all of if law enforcement agencies outside of the apartment. at the theater where you are, because there's so many officers and investigators at the apartment, what's the investigation going on right now at the theater? how long is it really supposed to take to process that theater

number 9? >> reporter: right. at the theater, what we notice here is the perimeter is entirely roped off here. we still cielo crime scene tape and also see officers pretty much guarding the area around the theater, making sure nobody goes into that area. as you can imagine, there's still plenty of evidence to collect over there. we're talking about a theater that was jam packed with people there to see the movie, and so many people injured. so lots of evidence still to collect there. so, as far as the crime scene goes here, we still notice a police presence, but i think if you compare the two, the hot bed of activity right now is really at that apartment complex as they use the robots figure out what is inside of that apartment, and determine, is it safe yet for their people to go in and possibly pull out evidence that will be helpful in this investigation. >> no doubt the hot spot this morning, and something will be following over the next few hours right here on mornings on

2. rene marsh, live in colorado this morning. as rene just said, more information is coming out about the victims who died. one of them, alex sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday at that movie theater. another victim michaela medek was 23. her family learned about her death 20 hours after the shooting, and then victim 24- year-old jessica ghawi who was an aspiring sports caster. police are still planning to meet with other victims' families and they will do that before they release more names to the public. in all, 12 victims died, 58 wounded, 11 survivors in critical condition this morning. a four month old baby who was hurt has been released from the hospital. three members of the military were also wounded and a sale sailor is missing. we're hearing from a victim who survived that shooting. pierce o'farrell was only a few feet away when the gunman fired a gas canister into the theater and pulled out a shotgun

opening fire on the front row. o'farrell and his friend tried to get down to avoid the gun fire but they were both hit. >> he said pierce, pierce, i'm shot man, i'm shot. i said me, too. just stay down. and then -- then he shot me a second time. >> o'farrell was shot in the foot and in the shoulder. he said at one point the gunman was standing over him. he said he put his face down, stayed still, and prayed until the gunman left that theater. an attorney and spokesperson for the holmes family in san diego said their hearts go out to the victims. >> their heart goes out to all of the victims and their families. they really want everybody to respect their privacy. very, very sad day. >> a spokes woman said the family is cooperating with authorities. the suspect's father robert holmes, flew to colorado yesterday, to see his son. the suspect's uncle also named james holmes, lives in carmel. he said the younger james was

a, quote, nerd, and there was nothing to suggest he would commit such an atroughs tee. the suspected shooter has more california ties. james holmes and his family lived in salinas before moving to san diego. neighbors who knew homes as a young boy named jimmy are dumb founded saying he had good, caring parents and a stable upbringing. one man called it a shocking revelation. >> there was nothing untoward. they were very good neighbors. >> another man who new james holmes in san diego described him as a normal teenager who did not exhibit any troublesome behavior, and had no rowdy friends. other news at 7:37 this morning. this morning firefighters are still on the scene of a house fire in hayward and channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is there live with more on what started this fire. allie. >> reporter: the fire started in the kitchen of this home behind us. this is in hayward in the hilly

area of hayward. you can see a lot of the damage here. this home just on the other side of this fence. firefighters are still on the property, checking things out and making sure there are no hot 1309s and they'll be starting -- spots and they'll be starting soon their official investigation into the cause. it seems like the person living here left a pan on the stove overnight. the damage from the outside is pretty obvious, but look at what it looks like inside. this is what's left of the kitchen, and even after the fire was out, the sink faucet was still running. the fire started around 6:00 this morning. the woman living here woke up around that time, when she smelled smoke coming into the bedroom. she went into the kitchen and saw the fire. >> she did try to move the pan, to see if she put it out, but then it flared up. so she exited the building. we always remind residents, if there is a fire, just exit the building and call 911. >> reporter: the woman escaped the fire unharmed, and no other buildings were affected by

this. firefighters had the flames out in about 15 minutes. and back out here live, again, right now crews #r still on the scene, they're wrapping things up out here, but they're going to start an official investigation into the cause of this fire. at this point it looks like it started in the kitchen with the pan left overnight on the stove. allie rasmus, ktvu. a group of fishermen, surfers and beach goers plan to hold a protest calling for the reopening of a san mateo county beach. martin's beach has been closed for several years after the piece of private land leading to the water changed hands. it's believe that the son of micro systems co founder owns the land. he gated the only road to the beach cutting off public access. the protest begins at noon at the gate. >> and beaches might be a little crowded today. >> sure. why not. >> it's going to heat up. rosemary has more on how hot and when it might cool down. >> it's going to be a great day along the beach if you're headed that way. we will continue to have the onshore breeze which means in

the afternoon. an n. election news, president obama and mitt romney have not announced whether they will keep their bay area visits in light of the colorado shooting. romney last traveled to the bay area in may during that visit, he appeared outside the bankrupt solyndra plant in fremont, bringing attention to the president's involvement in the 500 million dollar federal loan solyndra received. romney has three fund-raisers tomorrow including a $50,000 per person dinner in san francisco's pacific heights. we are waiting to hear if the president will call off his east bay campaign visit on monday. he is scheduled to attend a late afternoon fund-raiser at oakland's fox theater. occupiers and other protest groups are planning demonstrations. the massacre in colorado prompted house speaker john boehner to call on americans to come together. >> words cannot capture the horror or make sense of something so senseless. so i won't try. this much i know: i know that when confronted with evil we

including oakland, have also increased their presence at theaters to calm some people's nerves. in the wake of the shooting, a.m.c. theaters is announcing a policy change. yesterday it announced it will no longer allow masks, costumes or props that might make other people feel uncomfortable or threatened. regal cinemas also announced that ticket holders should expect stricter controls over costumes but did not elaborate any further. several stores and restaurants at a north carolina mall are expected to reopen today, a day after torrential rain caused the roof of the mall to partially collapse. officials closed the charlotte mall last night after a portion of that roof -- there you can see it, that fell in and caused some ankle deep water to collect on the ground. confused shoppers rushed to the exit. >> it was just like a movie, like there was water right at their heels, like they were barely making it. then police started filing in. like you've got to get out. you've got to get out. >> forecasters say three and a

half inches of rain fell near the mall in one hour yesterday afternoon. an emergency shelter had to be set up to care for nearly 200 dogs seized from a pennsylvania home. most of the dogs were chihuahuas. veterinarians checked them out thursday. they had minor eye, teeth and skin problems but no serious health issues. they are being sent to several different animal shelters and it's not clear if the owners will face charges. a volunteer firefighter has pleaded not guilty to charges of setting four small fires in sonoma county, and another fire in san mateo county. prosecutors say nathaniel schmidt even tweeted about the fires as he and other firefighters responded. the no structures burned and no one was injured. schmidt's mother says her son deserves a second chance. >> this is an immature 19-year- old, in many ways. he is a great kid. he's a sweet guy. >> schmidt faces as much as seven years in prison if convicted of the charges. a special service will be held today to honor firefighters in economy at that

well, this weekend, the hunt is on, along interstate 280 in the peninsula. biologists from the department of fish and game are using dart guns to sedate dozens of deer from wood side and placing g p.s. collars around the neck of the deer as part of a study to track the movement movements in an evidence to track the regional deer population. the study was initiated after a concerned resident called to

ammunition. james holmes is described as a quiet and intelligent but also, a loner. neighbors say he would not even acknowledge them in the hallway. he grew up in salinas, but his family moved to san diego when he was in middle school. he graduated from u.c. riverside with a degree in neuro science. holmes will be arraigned monday morning. bomb experts are hoping toker and holmes' boobytrapped apartment this morning. these are live pictures from a helicopter over holmes's apartment. authorities plan to remove items from there that could explode, including about 30 shells that will be placed in sand trucks and taken to a disposal site. police are warning that the removal process could lead to an explosion, as well as a fire. k.t.v.u.'s own eric rasmussen is at that scene on the ground right now. he will have a live report at 9:00, and bring us any breaking news there that apartment complex. we're also learning more about the suspect's life in california. coming up in 12 minutes, how

james holmes's family and former neighbors are responding to the tragedy. president obama has ordered that flags be flown at half staff to honor all the victims. the flags include those at the white house and all federal buildings and government offices and embassies overseas. they are going to remain at half staff through sun set on wednesday. and in this morning's weekly address president obama is asking americans to pray for the victims of the tragedy. >> we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings. such evil is senseless. beyond reason. >> in response to the shooting, president obama cut short a florida campaign trip to fly back to washington. he has spoken to aurora's mayor and colorado's governor, offering his support and federal assistance. this is a time for each of to us look into our hearts, and remember how much we love one another. and how much we love and how much we care for our great country.

pot on the stove. now, you can see a lot of the damage from the outside, and i believe the person in the doorway is the woman who lived there, although she said she did not want to be on camera which is probably why she is walking away. this is what it looked like from the outside. damage is very apparent. check out what it looks like inside. firefighters let us inside the building. you could see what was left of the kitchen, with the sink faucet still running. the fire started around 6:00 this morning. the woman living here woke up when she smelled smoke and she went into the kitchen and saw the fire and she then did something that firefighters say they don't recommend. >> she did try to move the pan, to see if she put it out, but then it flared up and so she exited the building. and we always remind residents, if there is a fire, to just exit the building, call 911. >> reporter: now the woman escaped the fire unharmed. again, she was checking out the inside and what's left of her home a short time ago. we tried to talk to her and the landlords, but everyone has

conditions. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi and his wife eliana lopez spent some time together after a judge lifted a stay away order. they kissed and held hands as the judge announced his decision yesterday. they weren't together for very long. ms. lopez said she was going back to venezuela. she left last night, so she could start work on a new movie tomorrow. >> finally, i can talk with my husband. and plan what we are going to do. it's fantastic. >> it's a victory. we're partners, without being able to be partners. >> mirkarimi has been unable to make contact with lopez since his arrest back in january for domestic violence following an argument where he bruised her arm. lopez returned to san franz co this week to testify before the city's ethickings commission which is scheduled to make a recommendation on whether mirkarimi should be removed from his position as sheriff. >> and we sat down with eleana lopez after her day in court.

good morning. a live look at downtown oakland, mostly sunny skies, 59 degrees. new this morning, a suicide bombing in northwest pakistan has killed at least nine people, three of the dead are children. authorities say the attack took place today, at a compound owned by the militant commander bula nabi. he is a rival of another prominent commander in the area who is an ally of the pakistani al tan. iowa -- taliban iowa police are calling the case of two admission girls an abduction. 10-year-old lyric and her eight you would cousin elizabeth disappeared a week ago. a search of the lake yesterday turned up nothing. investigators are reclassifying this case because they are confident the girls did not drown nor get lost. the father of one of the girls who has a long criminal record walked out of the lie detector test. he claimed police accused him of hurting his daughter and his niece.

continuing coverage now on the mass shooting in colorado. police say the suspect's weapons included an ar-15 assault arrival that can fire 50 rounds a minute. a remington .12 gauge shotgun and two .40 caliber glock handguns, one of which was found in the car. police say all webs were purchased legally over the past six months, and are all weapons that can be legally purchased right here in california. >> the suspected shooter has more california ties. james holmes and his family live in salinas before moved to san diego. neighbors who new holmes has a young boy named jimmy are dumbfounded saying he had good caring parents and a stable upbringing. one man called ate shocking revelation. >> it was nothing untoward. nothing at all. it looked like a -- they were very good neighbors. >> another man who new james holmes in san diego described him as a normal teenager who did not exhibit any troublesome

behavior. and had no rowdy friends. an attorney and spokesperson for the holmes family in san diego said their heart goes out to the victims. >> their heart goes out to all of the victims and their families. they really want everybody to respect their privacy, very, very sad day. >> the spokes woman said the family is cooperating with the authorities. the suspect's father robert holmes flew to colorado yesterday to see his son. the suspect's uncle, also named james holmes lives in carmel and he said the younger james was, quote, a nerd and says there was nothing to suggest he would commit such an atrocity. the second suspect in a drive-by shooting that killed a san francisco father and his two sons four years ago is scheduled to face a judge next week. wilfredo reyes is scheduled to be arraigned on tuesday after making his initial court appearance yesterday. prosecutors say reyes was in the car when edwin ramos opened fire on 48-year-old anthony bologna and his sons in 2008 after mistaking one of them for a rival gang member.

at least 21 people were burned during a fire walk at a motivational event in san jose. the participants walked on hot coles during the tony robbins unleash the power within seminar thursday night at the convention center. this is youtube video of a previous fire walking event. the san jose fire department says at least three victims had second and third degree burns, but one participant told ktvu that everyone was warned they might get burns or blisters. >> get your focus and attention away from that, and look into the power within yourself, and focus on just walking on the fire. and -- >> firefighters say the event did have the proper permits and fire and medical workers were on hand. tony robbins' organization says he has been holding those fire walks for decades and they will make sure they are done in the safest way possible. a surplus schedule is shaking up the california parks department. yesterday, director ruth coleman resigned after the department was accused of

a japanese rocket has lifted off headed for the international space station. that unmanned rocketed is carrying four and a half tons of supplies and equipment and is expected to dock at the i.s.s. next friday. the worst drought since 1956 has farmers in the midwest and corn belt re-evaluating their livelihoods. as this farm in maryland the soil is fairly dry and the

water reserves are low. that farmer there is sacrificing one crop to save another. he is going to turn off the irrigation pumps to his christmas trees, to keep water flowing to his money making crop of peaches. >> there are some farmers in the drought belt that are singing the blues and re- evaluating, you know, their risks. >> aside from the drought and the hot conditions, there was also an early spring. farmers say that combination will likely leave many of them in financial ruin, and also lead to higher prices for produce sold at the stores. drought conditions are taking their toll on an arkansas lake, killing thousands of fish. lack of oxygen in the water is killing off cat fish, bass, and several other types of fish. the lake was drained about a year ago, because of construction. then the drought hit. the lake has not been able to fill back up, and experts say fish kills are a normal part of the ecosystem. all right. it's 8:25. and let's head over to rosemary for a look at what kind of

they're making sure the area is safe. they say they're not going to rush it. you can see still a lot of activity out there right now, and we expect it to only escalate as the day progresses. investigators, of course say holmes killed 12 people and injured more than 50 when he did open fire on a crowded theater showing a new batman movie. rene marsh is live from aurora with more on the suspect and the victims. rene. >> reporter: well, claudine, we are right outside of that movie theater where this all happened. i can tell you there is still a bit of a police presence out here. they are guarding the perimeter of this theater. there's still yellow crime scene tape and right across the street, a makeshift visual. but you mentioned there's a lot of activity this morning outside the suspect's home. we have an aerial shot for you. this is what it looks like out there. we're told the fire department, as well as the a.t.f., they are there on scene, and new information from a law

enforcement official this morning, saying they believe at least a dozen explosive devices are inside that apartment. local and federal authorities are at the suspect's apartment building this morning. one he allegedly rigged with explosives. officials say it appears there incendiary guys and possibly chemical elements all linked together with wires. and are unsure how long it will take to diffuse. >> it is a very vexing problem how to enter the apartment safely. i've never seen anything like what the pictures show us. >> reporter: hundreds of residents were evacuated friday from five apartment buildings, including the one where holmes lived. meanwhile we're learning the names of some of those who were killed in friday's deadly shooting. jessica ghawi was an aspiring sports reporter. she narrowly escaped a deadly shooting in toronto last month. micayla medek's cousin said it took nearly 19 agonizing hours before the family finally

learned of her death. alex sullivan was at the theater to celebrate his 27th birthday. and matt mcquinn was killed attempting to shield his girlfriend. who was also hit by bullets, but is recovering in a local hospital. >> my daughter. >> reporter: the last number that we have is that 19 people remain in the hospital, two of them are in critical condition. we do know that grief counselors are being made available for the families of the victims, and there will be a vigil that will happen here sunday evening. back to you guys. >> rene, certainly everyone wants to know more about what could have led james holmes to do this shooting. what can you tell us about him? >> reporter: you know, that still has a lot of people scratching their heads. we don't know at this point what the motive was behind this mass shooting here. we are, however, learning more about the suspected shooter, who by the way, is behind bars

in a county jail, roughly 12 miles from where the shooting happened. he will make his first court appearance on monday, but more about him. he was a p.h.d. student at the university of colorado. he is in the process of withdrawing from the program. and one official at his undergraduate school or university said that he was a very bright student. he was top of the top. he graduated with honors. as far as a criminal past, he really didn't have in. the only brush that he had with the law is last year, a speeding summons. so that's what we're learning about him. in san diego, we know, his hometown, neighbors said he was a clean-cut nice guy but neighbors near colorado said he lived alone and kept to himself. back to you. >> thank you, rene. well, two teenagers from the bay area were reportedly inside that theater at the time of the attack. the marin independent journal

reports 19-year-old malea and 16-year-old manea sureig were in aurora for a youth conference. they say the smoke bomb landed near their seats. they are ok but a friend of theirs is suffering a wound to his arm. they described the scene as quote insane. security has been increased at movie theaters across the country including right here in the bay area. the san jose century theater on windsor boulevard brought in an armed guard to ease safety concerns. movie goers tell us they will not let the actions of a man disrupt their daily lives and activities. >> i think about stuff like that but i can't stop living my life because of it. you have to be careful. >> how do you put security for something like that? this is not an airport. >> local police departments including oakland have increased their presence at theaters to calm some people's nerves. some movie theaters are now changing their policy's after yesterday's shooting. yesterday the a.m.c. theater announced it will no longer allow masks, costumes or props that might make other people feel uncomfortable or

threatened. regal cinemas also announced that ticket holders should expect stricter controls over costumes, but did not elaborate any further. in the wake of the shooting, the studio behind the dark knight rises is holding off on announcing box office totals. the movie is projected to gross around $200 million this weekend. the "wall street journal" reports warner brothers will release the figures on monday now. meanwhile the studio is expected to cancel next week's premiers in tokyo and mexico city. a huge event in paris was cancelled yesterday after the shooting. the dark knight rises director christopher nolan is addressing the shooting. he said quote the movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. nolan says he was speaking on behalf of the entire cast and crew. former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords and her husband say they are horrified by the shooting. >> i think for the folks that

envelope. but similar envelopes were found at the san leandro, berkeley, oakland and union city police stations. police say three reputed members of a violent oakland gang have been charged with the murder of a toddler. prosecutors say 23 month old hiram lawrence, jr. was murdered last november after the gang members fires on a group of people shooting a music video in a parking lot. the shoot out was caught on the surveillance tape you see here. police say deonte huff, houston nathaniel, iii and 16-year-old frederick coleman shot nine people including the toddler. coleman's grandmother says he didn't do it. >> he was raised good, properly. this is -- i just can't -- >> the teenager, coleman will be tried as an adult for the toddler's murder. he is due in court on monday. south bay authorities are searching for a gunman who broke into a house and shot the homeowner. the person snuck into a house on higara road in east san jose

in the foothills. the owner who was asleep at the time woke up when he heard a strange noise. >> he woke up, the suspect confronts him. the suspect shot one shot towards the victim. injured him in the arm. and then the suspect fled. >> because it was dark he told police he couldn't see much except the attacker wore a dark hooded sweatshirt. >>this morning a 28-year-old woman is in jail after a judge refused bail in an alleged road rage fatal crash. yesterday, heather ann howe was charged with murder and reckless driving, producers say howe had a d.u.i. conviction in 2006, and that alcohol may have played a role in last weekend's crash. they say she was trying to run down her ex-boyfriend on his motorcycle when she hit a car, killing the driver. 56-year-old jesse garcia. a group of fishermen, surfers and beach goers are holding a protest today calling for the reopening of a san mateo county beach. martins beach has been closed for several years now after a piece of private land leading

good morning and welcome back. a live look from san jose. mostly sunny skies and 65 outside your door. >> and we are watching developing news in colorado this morning. you are looking at a live picture from aurora, colorado, that is the suspected gunman's apartment. games homes, and we've -- james holmes, we've just leshed that police and -- learned that police and advisors are trying to and -- firefighters are trying to enter that apartment now. there's still traffic by the main street but a lot of the emergency personnel out there. certainly they are concerned about what's inside that apartment authorities say they have trip wires, ammunition in regard to the ax rants they're deal -- accelerants they're dealing with. so they've got bomb experts there. you can see the ladder truck up above the apartment building. the full area is of course evacuated, as they try to keep

the area safe. certainly worried about the evidence that apartment. >> they've knowned about this boobytrapped apartment for more than 24 hours. police yesterday said we're not in a rush. everyone is evacuated out of that building. we're taking our time. it's one of the reasons why a lot of local agencies elicited the help of bomb experts in coming up with the exact plan they think is the right plan to enter the apartment while one, keeping people safe from a distance, but also as you mentioned, claudine, preserving that evidence. they want to know more about their suspect in the case that the suspect doesn't start talking. >> and of course our crew is on the scene, on the ground there. we have eric rasmussen and photo journalist erica hinderguard keeping an eye on the situation. they're pushed back a little bit as well from the perimeter area as they want to make sure again, everyone is safe. they said this morning there could be an explosion when they open the doors, if they hit a trip wire or something like that. certainly safety is a top concern. again we are hearing word they're trying to enter that apartment. >> it will be interesting to

just stay down. and then he shot me a second time. >> o'farrell was shot in the foot and shoulder. he said at one point the gunman was standing over him. he said he put his face down, stayed still and prayed until the gunman left that theater. the family of a navy sailor have identified him as one of the victims killed. 27-year-old john layer mother. naval officers broke the news to his family last night. alex sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday when he was killed. micayla medek was 23 years old. her family learned about her death 20 hours after the shooting and 24-year-old jessica ghawi was an aspiring sports caster. 12 victims died, 50 wounded. most are still in hospitals. 11 at last word are in critical condition. three members of the military were also among the wounded. and a baby who was hurt has been released from the hospital. president obama and mitt romney have not announced whether they will keep their

scheduled bay area visits next week in light of the colorado shooting. romney last traveled to the bay area in may and during that visit he appeared outside the bankrupt solyndra plant in fremont bringing attention to the president's involvement in the $500 million federal loan solyndra received. romney has scheduled three fund- raisers for tomorrow, including a $50,000 per person dinner in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. we are also waiting to hear if president obama will call off his east bay campaign visit on monday. he is scheduled to attend a late afternoon fund-raiser at the fox theater in oakland. occupiers and other protest groups are planning demonstrations. a memorial service will be held today for a lafayette couple who died in a plane crash last weekend. peter and mona branna were killed when their plane crashed in utah when they were flying to aspen, colorado. peter branna was a developer in lafayette and the director of the california bank of commerce. today's service is at 1:00 in danville. this weekend the hunt is on

along interstate 280 and the peninsula to find deer for tracking. biologists from the department of fish and game are using dart guns to sedate dozens of deer from wood side north to burling game. they're placing g.p.s. collars on the deer to track their movements in an effort to protect the regional deer population. the study was initiated by cal trans after a concerned resident called to complain about the number of deer being struck by vehicles. 20 in the last year. >> so we can track how it's moving in relation to the interstate, and whether or not it's crossing, how close it gets, and helps to us plan mitigation or fixes, to improve the situation. >> and a couple of those fixes could include an eight foot tall fence along the interstate, and safer access points under nests the roadway for those deer. a volunteer firefighter has pled not guilty to charges of setting four small fires in sonoma county, and other fire in san mateo county. prosecutors say that than i can't believe schmidt even -- nathaniel schmidt even tweeted about the fires as he and other firefighters responded to them.

no structures burned and no one was injured. schmidt faces as much as seven years in prison if convicted of those charges. the olympics' opening ceremony takes place next friday and the torch arrived in london in grand style. check it out. coming down from a helicopter, that is a british para trooper carrying that torch. he landed near the tower of london and as you can see there, they lit that torch to signal the final week before the games. more than 10 million people across great britain saw that torch as it made its way to london. >> we do everything in our power to mocs myself security at the venues, and that's working well now. the army. >> london's mayor says he is not concerned about security. there will be more than 10,000 private guards and military personnel, but the colorado shooting has highlighted the possibility of that, quote, lone wolf attack. a driver dangles from a bridge after losing control of a truck carrying several tons of coal. how emergency responders finally rescued that man.

a truck driver in china was left dangling from a bridge after his vehicle overturned. the accident happened thursday morning in chin in's gansu province. authorities say the driver was transporting 30 tons of coal when the truck suddenly overturned. firefighters used ropes to rescue the driver who is now being treated at the hospital. >> yikes. that's scary pictures.

is as close as authorities will let us get across the major road, peoria, from across the street of the building. as we pan over you can see the large ladder truck just beyond if you look at the top floor you might be able to see the windows of the suspect's apartment that are broken out that is where firefighters were working yesterday there on the top floor. police say this apartment as you mentioned is heavily booby trapped with trip wires even jars of liquid they think might contain accelerant i talked to neighbors down the street they said they smelled what seemed like gas coming from the apartment yesterday. police admit there could be other unknown hazards inside aside from the obvious danger to everybody out here investigators told us a couple hours ago they would hope to avoid any major explosions because there could be critical clues inside that apartment that they don't want to lose. >> we don't want to lose evidence shall value, anything that is in there we are going to use as evidence so we are
