at 6:00. good evening everyone, i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne and today bomb experts diffused several devices in the important of this suspect in the shooting at the colorado movie theater. they took out a tripwire set to set off an explosion if somebody opened the door. officials say they have eliminated all major threats from the apartment. aurora's police chief said the explosives were clearly meantly kill police officers. >> what has happened to our city, what has happened to these wonderful people would live here and also what he threatened to do to one of our police officers. >> police would not comment on what might have motivated the suspected gunman james hoeffels he in the rampage that killed 12 people and left 70 wounded

on friday, but said the massacre was planned for months. >> in the meanwhile we're learning more about the chaotic scene. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live in colorado tonight where he just spoke to two young women from the north bay, who narrowly escaped getting hurt. >> reporter: for melee and linnea schurig of san rafael, this is still sinking in and say one of their friends was actually hit in the arm and just a short distance away, we can show you a memorial for the 12 victims who lost their lives is growing. and these two sisters from the bay area tell me this entire experience is surreal. images of a community in mourning and people shedding tears for those who were killed are especially unsettling for 19-year-old melia and 16 linnea schurig. the two sisters were in theater 8, along the wall adjacent to theater 9 where a gunman went

on a shooting rampage on friday. a bullet fragment through the wall hit a friend sitting behind them. >> we turned around and he had a giant hole in his forearm and was pouring blood off of him. >> reporter: even though they said reality didn't sink it until they made it into the theater lobby. >> a lot of people yelling my husband is dead. my boyfriend is dead. >> reporter: in town for the annual friends convention a group for young people who stutter, the schwarzenegger their miles per gallon are grateful for the support from the bayer and beyond. >> all of my friends are you are in colorado and by the time they realized that we were there, it was oh, my god. >> you were in that movie theater. >> your friend got hit by a bullet. >> what are the chances (we could have won the lottery instead of this. >> reporter: and as we come back out live,

we can show you the crowd around this memorial that has formed near the movie theaters is growing tonight. this afternoon the schurigs told me that their friend that we told you about was hit in the arm and in the local hospital is now out of the hospital and doing well. we continue to monitor the investigative side and bring you an update tonight at 10:00. live in aurora, colorado, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the website tmz found this picture of shooting suspect james holmes with dyed hair, reportedly posted on a sex website back on july are 5th. >> aurora police ted say holmes received numerous delivers ever ammunition and say the four guns all bought at denver-area stores in last two months. authorities said that today the head of the public defenders office will represent holmes. he is due in court on monday. authorities in aurora released the names of all 12 of

those killed, including jessica ghawi who survived another shooting six weeks ago at a mall in toronto. a.jy boik was planning on going to college in fault, 27-year- old navy petty officer john larimer was a cryptologic tech han and jesse child res. alex sullivan died on his 27th birthday and matt mcginn is among the dead,. the youngest victim 6-year- old verna moser-sullivan was at the movie with her mother who was critically injured. cowden was the oldest person killed, he was 51 years old. hospital officials in aurora say the next few days will be difficult as patients begin to come to grips with the tragedy. >> some of the patients are starting to release what really went on. so day 2 is a pivotal day for

them in beginning their recovery process. they have had some stress and nightmares, so we're working with them and the staff is coming together. i think it's a whole community starting to heal. >> right now there are 30 victims still hospitalized; 11 of them in critical condition. we have gotten word that president obama plans to visit colorado tomorrow to meet the shooting victims and their familys. >> coming up at 6:15 a story of survival and what he remembers the most. now to developing news out of east oakland where police say a 5-year-old girl has been shot. ktvu as noelle walker is in oakland and talked to the young victim's parents. >> ken, that little girl was exercising one of the childhood rites of summer, going out for ice cream on a holt summer day. she was standing here and became the victim a drive-by shooting. the car continued firing as it

drove off that way. the yellow crime scene tape, the yellow evidence markers, the sound ever gunshots. it's all too familiar in the east oakland neighborhood at 50th and bancroft. >> this would be the so-called safe part, but i guess it's kind of creeping over. >> reporter: at about quarter to 3:00 this afternoon a 5-year-old girl was walking with her parents became the latest shooting victim. police say the intended target was walking just ahead of the girl and her family. she was shot in the neck, right in front of fire station 18. >> heard multiple gunshots out of the front door and went to see what we could see and if we could help and find a 5-year- old little girl who was shot innocently, innocent bystander. >> reporter: firefighters brought her in the firehouse and started to treat her immediately, until the ambulance arrived. the girl is lifted in stable, but guarded condition at children's hospital. ktvu spoke with her parents. >> innocent 5-year-old child walking to the store, going to

get some ice cream and some car rolls by and shot my baby. >> reporter: witnesses we talked to reported hearing gunshots and a car speed away. none of them wanted to go on- camera, but many who live here shake their heads at the violence and the thought of a 5- year-old getting swept up in it. >> a little 5-year-old girl is what is sacred? really, what is sacred? >> reporter: now police sergeant told me they don't know how many suspects they are looking for. it was one car and they know the shoots were fired from the passenger side of the vehicle and describe the vehicle as probably a late or eld ore model lexus, maybe an esmodel of unknown color. they are also interested in talking to the person who they believe was the intended target. reporting live in oakland, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. the san francisco police department today became the 6th bay area police department to save letter filled with some sort of white powder.

the letter was fund at the northern station this morning. a police spokesperson says a police serving aide was going through the morning mail and made the discovery. >> that person immediately secured the area. we notified the fire department to come out with their hazmat team as a precaution we also cleared out the station. they determined it was nontoxic at that point. the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: hazmat teams gustav all-clear at 11:30. there is no word on what the substance was and police are releasing no details about the envelope. yesterday five east bay police stations received envelopes in the mail. fire crews from the bay area headed up to yolo county to help fight a wildfire there that has grown to more than 300 acres. the fire is burning in guinda west of interstate 50 crews from the marin county strike team are helping in the firefight there.

is no word on what sparked the blaze and if any structures are threaten ed. >> a hayward woman managed to escape an early morning fire that completely destroyed her home near vermont street. firefighters say the homeowner may have left a pan on the stove and it caught fire. they say she tried to put the fire out herself, but the flames flared up. she got away unhurt, but crews say that home is completely gutted. an overflow crowd turned out for a funeral service for a prominent east bay couple. as ktvu as john sasaki reports the couple died when their plane crashed last week in utah. >> reporter: the sanctuary at danville's presbyterian church was filled with people who came to say goodbye to a beloved lafayette couple. >> you left us way too soon. life will never bet same and we'll miss you for the rest of our live. >> reporter: 59-year-old peter and 57-year- old

mono died last week in a plane crash. >> they dated in high school and college and got married shortly after. >> reporter: he was a developer and bank director. she an interior designer. they were parents to three grown children, matt, mike and kathleen. >> my dad had such a great passion and enthusiasm for life. he loved his worth he loved skiing. he loved flying. >> she always wanted us to take the time to spend with me. she really knew how to enjoy the moment. >> reporter: the couple had touched so many lives that not only was the sanctuary full, but so was an adjoining gym. >> they meant a whole lot to a lot of people, businesswise, churchwise, communitywise, they had a lot of integrity and a lot of people loved them a lot and respected them a lot. >> he did not work to become wealthy, but to help others and share the rescues of god. i have come to share that

passion, fame and commitment. i know our whole family has r. one of the naturally curious grandchildren asked how they got heaven and how that child believes that they flew there. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters in east bay honors comrades tild killed in the line of duty. the contra costa fire protection district sponsored the event in concord. a memorial wall lists the names of 16 members of fire district who have died on the job since 1969. it was five years ago today that captain matt burton and engineer scott desmond were killed battling a house fire. this died trying to save two elderly people who also died in that blaze. he lived through the tore and now he is talking about. >> i didn't even see a figure behind the gun. >> still to come what this victim most remembers from that colorado theater shooting and his bay area connection. sunshine and triple-digit heat across parts of bay area.

dedicated to harim, the toddler killed earlier this year anyway shoot-out. >> when we get to revolution cafe, we'll be honoring the parents of baby harim, who was murdered for choosing restorative justice and no retillation and creating team arr harim foundation in their deep mourning. >> reporter: they will take a meandering path through the city of oakland making a statement ending the violence on the streets of oakland. a 16-year-old oakland teenager was in court facing charges of killing baby harim. they are putting rubber to the road to show that oakland is more than a city of violence. >> i think just supporting the community, west oakland. i live in east oakland, so i kind of like wanted to do something for summer. and i came out here because it's important to feel that community sense, you know? like we're together on this. >> reporter: now along that wall, there you can see the harim lawrence

violent act. as we mentioned earlier, president obama will be traveling to colorado tomorrow. today he asked americans to keep the victims of the theater shooting and their families in their thoughts and prayers. >> what matters in the end are not the small and trivial things that so often consume our lives, but it's how we choose to treat one another and love one another. it's what we do on a daily basis to give our lives meaning and to give our lives purpose. >> the president cut short a florida campaign trip yesterday to return to washington to meet with senior advisors. he expected to keep a campaign visit to the bay area on monday. he is scheduled to attend a late-afternoon fundraiser at oakland's fox theater. you can go to ktvu.com for more information onthe shooting in colorado, includingg pictures and video and the information on the victims. officers were called many a macy's security camera caught a man and woman using drugs.

it happened in a truck in the macy's parking lot on wednesday. police were then called and waited outside as the two people went inside the store. 47-year-old woman and man were arrested as they left the macy's. dozens of people went over the edge in san francisco today all for a good cause. the roof of the grand hyatt hotel,450' above the street. it raised $70,000 to keep the special olympics free for competitors. >> you have to be hanging off the side of the building, today was a nice day to do it. >> that is true. >> let's check in with mark

mark tamayo. >> beaches into the 60s and 70s, still a nice evening developing across parts of the bay area. right now on live stormtracker 2, there is a fog bank out there, mainly to our south and west around monterey bay and closer to offshore near the san mateo coastline. as far as temperatures from this afternoon, they ranged from the upper 60s in pacifica, warmest locations inland, 100 degrees, fairfield, antioch and livermore. forecast headlines for tonight, warm numbers inland. patchy fog for the coast first thing tomorrow morning.

we cool things off heading into sunday, but more significant cooling expected in the long-range forecast. a look at our current numbers, san francisco 67 degrees. but currently in the 90s for the 6:00 hour outside towards concord, livermore and fairfield in the upper 90s. you can pick out the overall pattern. today temperatures spiked with high pressure in control of our weather. a weak weather system moving in from the north. so we're going to cool things on average 4-8 degrees from today's numbers. first thing tomorrow morning, overnight lows will be kind of on the mild side. you could see 50s and lower 60s san josi 62, livermore 61 degrees and here is our forecast model showing you this fog. this could be locally dense coastsided. this is tomorrow morning at 6:00. as we take it into the afternoon hours, skies becoming partly sunny for the beaches. temperatures inland we're going to shave off a little bit, but still some 90s showing up on

[ applause ] >> scores of people gathered on the short-term of east palo alto to help celebrate the grand-opening of a brand-new park. cooley landing park was once the site of the old up to of ravenswood and used as a dump from the 1930s to the 1960s and now the environmental clean up is open.
