five. >> good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather hoppings. in just about a half hour thousands of people are expected to attend a prayer vigil for the victims of that movie theater shooting in colorado. it comes as hour details about the case are still surfacing. we have been in aurora after developments there. he is live where that emotional vigil is about to start. >> reporter: prelude to the services will get started any minute. at the podium behind me we are expecting to hear from a number of people as well as family of the victims. you see special guests making their way out. just beyond the people walking to their seats, just look beyond them. thousands are out here for this prayer vigil. the focus today is clearly the people who were lost injured. we heard also from a neighbor of the suspected killer.

people who shared an apartment building james holmes still can't get back inside so police brought their property out. >> guy -- that shot up the people at the theater was this nut over here. so he was kind of scary. . >> reporter: roberto martinez lived next door and saw holmes the day before the shooting. >> i saw him thursday morning when i was parked there. he came out smoking a cigarette and looking down like something was on his mind. >> reporter: he and some neighbors have finally moved back in after being forced to evacuate on friday after the apartment was found booby trapped. across down the process is much slower and more pain. . on one of the 12 crosses for each of the victims killed jamie becker wrote a personal message to her friend. >> she introduced my brother

mark. she had the most beautiful smile. she was a very kind and gentle person. >> reporter: becker said it took 24 hours to find what happened to her friend but reality set in when she saw her car still sitting in the theater parking lot. >> back out here live you hear the music. people have been walking up to put flowers and candles, at the fountain here for the victims. again just breathtaking the received the crowd that's out here tonight. ceremonies just getting started. at ten we will have a full wrap up on all that's happening here. we are live. >> the president flew to the area this it afternoon to try to comfort the families of the theater shooting victims. he is not attending the vigil saying he didn't want to distract from the tragedy. instead he went directly to the hospital for private meetings. seven the victims there are still in critical condition. he is expected to meet with

investigators for an update. we greg our first look at the 12 victims of that shooting. these pictures just released today. the oldest victim was a 51-year- old, the youngest just six. many of the victim was in there 20s to see that movie. two of them were members of the military, another had just graduated high school. one of them had survived another shooting just six weeks ago at a mall in toronto canada. all of them victims of one of the worst mass shootings in united states history. >> the police chief said today that the suspect appears to have acted alone and there are no other suspects. a local gun range owner said that holmes was rejected just last month to join the range because of his behavior and a strange voicemail message. the owner called that message as freaky at best. it has not been released. holmes is being held without bail on suspicious of multiple

counts of first degree murder. a hearing is set for tomorrow. >> happening right now romney is in the bay area raising cash for his campaign. we are at the hotel with how much it cost to get into the event. >> reporter: romney should arrive any minute or could arrive any minute now. he is running late for a 4:45 fundraising event here at the hotel. what we have you can see police on all four corners, directing traffic, anticipating thea arrival. is he here for a fundraiser with tickets going from $2,500 to 10,000 dollars dollars. there is a small and loud group of protests outside. in wood side down the driveway is the home of tom, site of the

first 50,000 a plate fundraiser but his most visible stop is at the hotel. >> romney says that he will bring tax cuts to the wealthy as well as corporations and we think that tax cuts should come to the middle class. >> reporter: romney is here in the bay area to race money and he has been out pacing the president nationally. in the latest filings obama and the dnc raised $144 million compared to romney's at 170 million. in california the president is out pacing romney 60-12 million but the gap is much smaller as the romney campaign has yet to report contributions to his party. with three major fund-raisers today he will benefit. one of those attending the event is judi hamilton who has maxed out her contribution to romney. >> i think that it's good he is here. i think it races his profile in

the state. i don't think there is much chance california will go republican but it still matters. >> reporter: from the fairmont he will end his day with a dinner at pacific heights. that is another 50,000-dollar a plate affair. he will stay in the bay area tonight as will the president also here to race campaign cash. in san francisco, ken pritchett. >> and speaking of that the president is scheduled to arrive in the bay area in about two hours from colorado. air force 1 is expected to touchdown at sfo at 7:15 tonight. the white house said the president won't have any public appearances this evening. tomorrow morning the president will leave for a quick campaign trip to reno before returning to the bay area in the afternoon. he is scheduled to attend a small fundraiser at a home in piedmont and then will go to oakland fox theater. the visit will cause street closure tomorrow.

starting at eight the area boundedly san pablo avenue, telegraph and 17th will be closed to parking, vehicle and pedestrian traffic. the streets are set to reopen by 10:00 p.m. police plan to close the 17th street entrance to the 19th street bart station. >> medical marijuana activists plan a protest to coincide with the president's visit. officials plan a press conference tomorrow after a planned demonstration in oakland city hall. multiple businesses around the theater are also expected to display green flags. the group is calling on the white house to respect california state law allowing medical marijuana. >> richmond police looking for two gun men after a shooting in the city's iron triangle. the shooters asked the victims one question, apparently didn't like the answer and opened

fire. >> reporter: richmond police say they they pinpointed the gun fire this morning. then the calls came in. two men shot near the intersection of 13th and costna. two men pull up in a black car and asked the victims what gang they were with. when the men said they weren't in a gang the men in the car opened fire hitting each once. one man was shot in the head. investigators believe it happened right here near this blue jag and one of the victims made it down a half block before he collapsed. that's where investigators found one of them. crews took the men to area hospitals, both are in stable condition and are expected to survive. around richmond, frustration, some say they think the solution to street violence is more activity. >> it's a lot of young people getting killed. that's the thing. they have something to do, basketball, more -- when i was -- we had cheer leading we were engaged and now they aren't.

>> reporter: others say church is the answer. >> help a lot. because if one will go they wouldn't know or have the knowledge on how it'll be up in a church. it may change their whole lifer. many others say the solution is economic reform. >> i'm thinking the kids need jobs and things to do, you know. >> reporter: police say that the suspects are outstanding and they are looking for the public's help. in richmond. >> firefighters say they are getting the upper hand on a fire that broke out near vacaville late this afternoon. it was first reported around 2:25 near west ranch lane. at one point building was buildings were threatened. the fire is 75% contained. in hundreds of firefighters including? from the bay area are trying to get a handle on a fire there.

a deputy sheriff found her at about 8:30 last night in the area of frazier lake. the deputy said she was wandering in and out of traffic. she was taken to valley medical center. >> she was a survivor of a accident that killed her father and sister. now the community is coming together. >> >> and east bay lawmaker in charge for shoplifting said she isn't done with politicking. the position she is running for that's surrounded by scandal. >> and after weeks of controversy joe paterno's statue has come down. yacht family of the coach said it was the wrong decision.

we first reported it last night. it happened about 10:00 p.m. in oakland near the high street on-ramp to interstate 880. authorities say it started two minutes earlier when an officer tried to make a traffic stop. police say the vehicle didn't stop and that prompted a short pursuit. then a black acura started ramming the patrol car and someone inside there shot at the officer. the officer wasn't hit. >> a fundraiser was held today for the young survivor of a horrible traffic accident in concord. paul chambers is in concord where the community is rallying to make sure the girl has a chance at a brighter future. >> the family and everybody getting together right now. they are starting the raffle in a few minutes. today's event is in support of

the only survivor, 12-year-old hannah. >> her father was dead ated to the success of his daughters. >> reporter: and the community plays a key panel, that's why they are holding fundraiser to support the girl selling cup cakes and raffling items donated by the community. they plan to buy her school supplies and keep the rest for a clothe college fund so she can continue to put many indication first. >> same for the tutoring classes they had before o.j. continuing the same thing she had before so she wouldn't loose those special kinds of things. >> reporter: now back on april 7th. they were riding their bikes entree boulevard when police say a 17-year-old in a white suv jumped the curb, sheared off a fire hydrant and hit them. now more than three months

when he hit a van traveling westbound head on. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the van is cooperating with police. east bay firefighters up against water instead of fire today. crews fremont responsibled to a call for help on the bay. a person was apparently stranded on a barge near the bridge. he reportedly jumped off to it save a boat and was swept up by the current. he was not hurt and was released. >> east bay assembly woman on probation forship lifting wants to one for supervisor. she said she will run by the seat left by nadia lockear who quit after abuse and sex scandal. she plead no contest to shoplifting a store in san francisco. >> authorities in san leandro say a man wanted for beating a

co worker has turned himself in. police have been looking for the 20-year-old since wednesday. that's when investigators say he beat a co worker with a bat and then kicked him with steel toe boots after an argument at a business. he called police on friday and gave up. >> two uc davis doctors have reportedly been banned from preforming research on humans after they allegedly improperly did tests on dying patients. these men tested on dying brain cancer patients without university permission. they said that they believed the fda had given permission. he has been the department chairman at the school of medicine since 1997. the others an asift isn't professor. >> the ncaa announced it would impose measures against penn

state. it comes after a report found top officials covered up sex abuse allegations against jersey sandusky. they said details would be released tomorrow by the president. last week he said he wouldn't rule out the possibility of shutting down the penn state program in the wake of the scandal saying he had never seen anything as bad as this. the same report prompted officials today to remove the school statue of joe paterno. as crews took the statue about a hundred students watched chant wednesday are penn state. the family said that removing the statue doesn't serve the victims of the crime or help heal the penn state community. >> a deadly crash backs up traffic on one of the busiest freeways. why the drivers of two vehicles were both arrested. >> its been shameful.

california freeway. authorities say two cars hit a construction zone on interstate 405 south of los angeles. the drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries. they were arrested at a hospital on suspicious of driving under the influence. they could be charged with manslaughter. the freeway was shut down for hours as authorities investigated. >> john mccain slammed the obama administration today calling it shameful that the united states has not done more to defeat the government in syria. today he voiced concern that the government is now moving chemical weapons under the fog of war. >> media reports that chemical weapons are being moved around, israel being very concerned about some of those. the not to mention the death of 17, 18,000 people. >> he said the outsinneds to provide arms and equipment to

the rebels. he called the un attempts to stop the violence a failure. >> in afghanistan three contractors were killed today when officials say a man dressed as a security member opened fire. so far this year 26 foreign troops have been killed by someone wearing an official afghanistan military uniform. also today we learned five members were killed in roadside bombings. the military has not released the nations. in other news of the world today in china a rescue as the heaviest rains in decades killed at least 37 people and left cars, trucks and buses submerged. this video was shot in northern part of the country. this is the driver of a pickup truck which was washed away by sudden floodwaters, he was the only survivor of the five in the vehicle. the rain forced the cancellation of flights at the airport leaving 80 travelers

. recapping our top stories for you on this sunday, romney is here in the bay area today for a series of campaign fund- raisers, protesters greeted supporters as they arrived at the hotel in san francisco. romney also attended a 50,000- dollar a plate event. tonight he is scheduled to attend another pricey fund raiser in san francisco's pacific heights. richmond police are asking for the public's help after two men were shot in broad daylight today. it happened about 11:20 this morning near the intersection of 13th street and kosta. investigators say two men pulled up in a black saturn and asked the victim what gang they were with. when the men said they weren't in a gang the men opened fire. both victim was taken to the hospital. they are expected to survive. and the president flew to

colorado today to visit with victim its of the colorado movie theater shooting and their families. after landing the president went to the hospital for private meetings with the victims. seven of the shooting victims remain in critical condition. >> and happening now the community in colorado is coming together for a public vigil to remember the victims of that movie theater shooting happening on friday. that are live pictures of that vigil that is currently underway and as you can see thousands have gathered here they have gathered outside of city hall. among those attending the colorado governor as well as the mayor, both of them expected to speak coming up in a few. city officials hope the event will be the start of a community healing process. the accused gunman has a strong connection to northern california. james holmes spent many years as a child in the fox hill

the governor who has already been dealing a range of natural disasters here in the state has been an extraordinary example of strength, the mayor who has only been on the job seven months and obviously has responded with great strength and leadership, the police chief who we had the opportunity to speak over the phone, chief oats has been dealing as difficult a set of circumstances as any law enforcement officer deals with. he and his officers have done everything right. by the book with great courage and great determination. so, we are very proud of them and i think it i speak for the
