heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. as aurora struggles to heal, president obama speaks to those who lost loved ones. >> my main task was to serve as a representative of the entire country and let them know that we are thinking about them at this moment and will continue to think about them each and every day. >> reporter: the president said he came not only as president but also as a father and a husband. he said family shared tears, accepted hugs but also shared laughter as they recalled their loved ones. seven people remained in critical condition tonight in the hospital. president obama visited today during his stop in colorado. meantime a huge crowd showed up to honor those who did not survive. ktvu's eric rasmussen was at that vigil and tells us what the governor did not say about the suspect, eric.

>> reporter: we've seen some incredible tributes to the victim's really since we got here on friday. just take a look at the crosses, they were brought in by the same man who brought in crosses for the victim of the columbine shooting. >> reporter: one at a time, a crowd of thousands honored each of the people killed in friday's movie theater shooting. including some that died protecting the ones they loved. >> people like john blanque the 21-year-old who's act of heroism saved the life of jansen young. >> reporter: through song and

prayer for the survivors. for their families. >> reporter: the community of aurora offered comfort to those who loved so much while the governor of colorado diminished the man accused of pulling the trigger. >> and i refuse to say his name. >> it is not this senseless act of violence that marks us as a community. it is the lives and acts of these heros and the innumerous acts of kindness, love and care for our neighbors that defines who we are. >> family members of the victims left tonight's memorial as the entire crowd sang amazing grace. we're live here in aurora, colorado tonight. eric rasmussen. suspected gunman james holmes is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow for the first time. a public defender has been appointed to be his lawyer. today a local gun range owner

said that his club rejected holmes from membership because of a weird message on his answering machine. >> the answering machine was very guttural, very deep voiced, deliberate, bizarre kind of strange uttering it was almost freakish and i thought that's kind of weird. that's kind of bizarre. >> reporter: the gun range owner said he left a message any way but never heard back from holmes. photos of all 12 fatal victims were released today. the victims range in age from six to 51 years old. most of them were in their 20s. two men who were killed were members of the military. another had just graduated high school and was planning to go to college in the fall. all of them now linked as victims of one of america's worse shooting tragedies. in the wake of that massacre, california senator dianne feinstein renewed her push to ban assault weapons and high capacity gun magazines like those used by the

suspected gunman. >> pure and simple, weapons of war don't belong on the streets. this is a powerful weapon, he had 100 round drum. this is a man who planned it, who went in and his purpose was to kill as many people as he could. >> senator feinstein admitted changes to gun laws probably will not happen until after the november election. she offered a ban on assault weapons following the 1993 ban. that ban expired in 2004. despite the colorado tragedy. block buster numbers are expected for the opening weekend of the dark knight rises. still warner brothers studios is withholding revenue reports out of respect of the colorado victims. they say it's on track to earn 160 to $162 million. that would put it in third place after the avengers and

reno. stops tomorrow may actually help the president pick up conservative votes. >> reporter: the president arrived here about an hour ago, tomorrow he will face a crowd of critics who were once completely in his corner. >> reporter: president obama stepped off air force one. gave a quick wave of greeting then headed down the steps directly into a waiting car. there was no group of dignitaries standing by. minutes after he arrived president obama was off again along with his security detail. the president will be spending the night in his hotel. tomorrow after a quick visit to reno the president arrives in oakland for three fund raising events one with technology leaders. a second at a private home in piedmont. both events nearly $36,000 a head. the third will be at the fox theater in oakland. tickets there starting at $100 and scaling up.

the president is expected to be greeted by protesters tomorrow. mainly medical marijuana advocates incensed by recent crack downs of dispensaries. and occupy oakland supporters. some political analysts say the protests could have an unintended effect. >> even if somehow people thought this could actually help obama among moderates and conservatives he can't really use it. he can't turn around and understood mine -- undermine people in the left. >> reporter: that political analysts told me any damage done to president obama's campaign by those protesters would be short lived because this election hinges on a handful of swing states including just one issue, the economy. >> reporter: the president's visit will lead to some street closures tomorrow starting at

8:00 a.m., the area bounded by san pablo avenue, 17th and 20th avenue will be quardened off. this is the president's fourth visit to the bay area this year. he also went to los angeles for a dinner with george clooney. and president obama isn't the only one campaigning in the bay area. coming up in six minutes, the six stops mitt romney made in california today. a 6-year-old boy wounded as he was standing in a bus stop.

the accident happened in the hunters point neighborhood. the boy was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital. they are looking for at least two gunmen that opened fire at the bus stop striking the teen. police are looking for two men that shot at a chp officer last night in oakland. as we first recorded, the incident happened around 10:00 near the high street onramp to interstate 880. a highway patrol officer was chaising a white van when a black acura appeared and started ramming into the patrol car. then someone inside that car shot at the officer. the officer wasn't hit but the rear window of his patrol car was shattered. richmond police are looking for two shooters who opened fire on one man who said they did not long to a gang. two men stopped and asked the victim which gang they were in. when the victims said they were

not in a gang the men in the shot shot them each once. residents say they are frustrated by the street violence. >> it's a lot of young people getting killed. that's the major things. if the young people had more to do. when i was young we had cheer leading. seems like now they are not. >> reporter: the two victims are hospitalized in stable condition and are expected to recover. a fundraiser was held in concord today for the 12-year- old survivor of a horrific crash that killed her father and little sister. paul chamber tells us the money is meant to keep the girl's dreams on track. the community is coming together in support of the nuri family. it's been six months since the accident that killed sudemi and sedice. >> when his father was alive he was very dedicated to the success of his daughters.

>> reporter: that's why they're holding tonight's tpupd raiser. selling cup cakes and offering up items donated by the community. the hopes are to buy her a laptop. >> paying for the tutoring classes that they had before is continuing the same thing that she had before so she wouldn't lose those special kind of things to help make her successful. >> reporter: it was back in april 7th of this year. hannah, her father and sister were riding bikes. that's when a man who was driving a white suv jumped the curve. sheered off a fire hydrant and ran into the family killing hannah's father and 6-year-old sister. the driver was released in jail

a few days after the accident and is yet to go to court. a fundraiser was held for shay shaw. her family needs money for medical bills. an organizer told us as many as 250 showed up tonight. they also raised money with organizers. they won't have a tally of their totals till tomorrow. mitt romney just wrapped up a campaign fundraiser in san francisco. also a bigger burning man. a man is against the idea

because of what he says festivalgoers leave behind. 10 people are living in a home and they haven't paid a dime. why some people call them squatters while others say they are a blessing.

mary hayashi insends to run for alameda county supervisor seat. for her part hayashi pleaded not guilty to shoplifting from the neiman marcus store in san francisco. two scientists are being investigated of performing tests on dying patients. the two investigated on dying brain cancer patients without university permission. both believed the fda had given permission for the experiment. firefighters are spending the night of a brush fire outside of vacaville to make sure there are no flair ups. the fire was first reported around 2:25 this afternoon burning on west ranch lane. at one point the flames came within 100 feet of homes but no homes were damaged.

the fire was contained around 3:45. firefighters say they have not yet determined what caused that fire. firefighters in yolo county are keeping a close eye on gusty winds and the past of a grass fire. the fire started yesterday near the town of gwinda. firefighters say the fire is now 65% contained. but high heat and shifting wind are making the job difficult. the fire has burned 520 acres along with several commercial vehicles. crews kept flames from damaging five threatened homes. >> the houses wouldn't be here if it wasn't for their fine work. >> woke up to fire trucks protects our properties. a sonoma county man is challenging a decision to allow the burning man to grow to

bring the number of foreign forces killed this month to 32 and 247 for the years in in japan an investigation is now under way after allegations surfaced that workers at the damaged fukushima plant were forced to under report the amount of radiation they were exposed to so they could stay on the job longer. in an interview broadcast this weekend, a subcontractor acknowledged that nine workers were told to cover their docimiters with lead plates. and in norway tears and memorials as that country paid respect to those who died one year ago today in a bomb attack and shooting rampage. 77 people died in those twin attacks. anders bravik admitted to those crimes. a verdict is expected next month. in texas tonight an investigation is under way after 11 people were killed

we are following breaking news right now out of san jose. firefighters have now called a

fourth alarm. that fire is at the el coronado apartments. the blaze first reported just about an hour ago at 9:30. we have reports from the scene that people have been evacuated from some of the units there. now to oakland tonight, ktvu discovered as many as 10 people had been living in a bank owned building for nearly a year now. and they haven't paid a dime in represent. some neighbors call them squatters, others a blessing. eric rasmussen find out it's not the house they targeted and neither the city or bank can seem to get them out. it is tonight's special report. >> i found a bunch of people inside the home. >> reporter: broker tony macroll says he had just kicked swatters out when he discovered they had returned and changed the locks. once we finally got inside, we found a bizarre painting, beer and pills. >> the closet was full of

clothes. they took it, there's some tennis shoes left. >> reporter: then a real surprise. >> what's going on with you guys? >> this man said he wanted to check out the house for a friend but we recognized him as one of the same squatters who had taken over another four unit building just down the street on valesito place near highland hospital. he did not want to talk to us then either but some neighbors had plenty to say about it. >> they are squatters. they're free loading. they're not paying any rent. >> reporter: do you feel like you're trespassing? >> not at all. >> reporter: joshua says he's one of 10 people who have been living in this building 10 feet. >> this ivy was entirely covering the street. >> reporter: josh shows us how he says they cleaned up the place. he also brought out this utility bills that proves they're paying for water and electricity. he says he doesn't know anything about the squatters living in the greenhouse down the block but as the occupy

house here suggests, nicoles makes no apology for taking over the building without paying rent or getting the bank's permission. >> they've completely denied the right to take rent from us. they've taken away everything. we bailed them out and they kicked everybody out of their homes. they've ruined the lives of so many people. >> reporter: nicoles says bank of america has filed a civil suit to try to evict him and the others living here and they've hired their own lawyers to fight it. that's why this city inspector who visited the property told us his hands are tied. >> you should consult with the city attorneys office on that issue. i'm really just doing an inspection to assess the condition of the property. >> reporter: another city official confirmed it's a civil matter and the police can't kick the residents out. >> the problem is that once again it's like the monkeys fist in the jar. you know that's how you get

caught. >> reporter: neighbors david and sandy berger say they worry the number of people going in and out of this building is growing and that there's no record who they are. but they say their new neighbors aren't the real problem. >> the real issue here is not the occupy, the issue is why the property was ever allowed to get into the state where people thought it was derelict and they could move in and squat there. where's the responsibility of the banks? >> reporter: hi this is eric rasmussen with ktvu channel 2 in the bay area. >> reporter: after we contacted bank of america it sent us a statement saying in part we are aware that there are some unauthorized tenants in the building and we are working with authorities to take appropriate legal procedures to have them removed from the property. once this situation is resolved our goal is to market the property for sale as quickly as possible. at least some long time residents on this street say they are running out of patience. >> no they haven't had a -- and

they're free loading, they're don't belong there end of story. authorities in san francisco today releaseed the name of motorcyclists killed in an accident yesterday. 35-year-old constantine was riding eastbound between evans and pennsylvania avenues yesterday morning. police say he was killed after colliding with a van. boyco was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the van is cooperating with police. >> wall street anticipating a big week with earnings reports from both apple and facebook. apple reports on tuesday and investors hope the i pad maker can beat already high expectations. facebook reports on thursday and at about $29 its stock is well below the opening price of $38 a share. asian stocks have been

up. those clouds associated with a few storms. showers developing just out to the east as you can pick out the latest with the radar. some of the showers right around merced to the north of merced and modesto. also approaching yosemite out near the jackson area. yosemite to the east there. back here we have the low clouds and fog not much happening here with the clouds concentrated coast side. down toward the santa cruz county right around the san mateo county. we'll be regrouping over the next few hours over the next three to six hours. temperatures for today. now we cooled off a little bit quite a bit coast side and around the bay. still some hot numbers inland. san jose at 85. forecast headlines, mostly clear skies across the bay and for the inland spots. still a few patchy clouds developing coast side.
