this is where firefighters say they found the bodies of two people. this fire is also displaced. 60 more people and red cross is trying to help them with temporary housing. the alarms went off and they could smell smoke, it woke them up and they went outside because the flames were shooting high in the air. >> there was so much smoke and it was just a huge flame, huge fireball. >> so far we have no word on what started the fire and at least two people are known to be dead. following overnight news from richmond. police cleared the scene of an overnight shooting. paul chambers joins us from headquarters with what he has learned about it, paul? >> reporter: we can take a look at some video now.

police say about 5:45 there was a person shot in the 2100 block of neveen avenue. right now we do not know of a motive or if anybody is in custody in that shooting but we can tell you, where that morning shooting occurred is where the college student was shot and killed back in january when he was sitting in a parked car with his sister. we know one person was shot taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive. we will talk about the gun violence and we will have additional information and bring it to you. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 morning news. and a standoff, it came to an end a few hours ago. police arrested one suspect wanted for shooting at a chp patrol car after a standoff in

an east oakland home. s.w.a.t. teams first surrounded them and the arrest came 12 hours later. safety was the top priority. >> safety is the most concern, safety of the personnel and safety of the residents in this area, we don't want anybody getting injured. and there was a shooting on interstate 880 and the window of a chp patrol car was shot out, but nobody was hurt. now an eight-year-old boy is in the hospital. jeanine della vega is there and she can tell us what happened, jeanine? >> reporter: that's right, dave, i just spoke with the nursing supervisor and she tells me the boy remains unchanged. he is in serious condition.

you can see the pool is still locked and it is located in the community of manufactured homes in san jose. the eighth-year-old boy -- eight-year-old boy nearly drowned and we were told a teen began cpr on him. two witnesses said the child and others in the pool were playing who can hold their breath under the water the longest. emergency crews responded and helped the boy. >> as always, there is always a bunch of little kids and my mom is so upset about little kids just jumping into the roof and into the hot top and she is just like i realize want a life guard here. >> the pool rules and it says children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult

weeks. in the meantime the senator identified ann finestein wrote the original weapons ban but the law expired in 2004 during the bush administration. senator finestein will be joined by three fellow members of the company during a news conference in washington d.c. san francisco mayor ed lee is standing on his stop and frisk policy. he has strengthened his commitment to that policy. it calls for officers who stop and search people they deem suspicious in an effort to get illegal guns off the streets. it has been linked to racial profiling. oakland police are still experiencing radio problems. they suddenly fall into dead

zones. they also can't broadcast in, including the basement of their own headquarters, they are in the process of moving to a new regional radio system and oakland is deciding whether to join that or spend more money on its own fixes for a new digital system. a state park scandal may end up hurting governor brown's initiative to raise taxes. they called for an audit for special funds in the wake of that scandal. this after the park's department hid almost $54 million in surplus funding for years. even as state parks were closed. >> we were shocked. we've worked with the state for a long time and clearly this point in could have been used for the crisis that is facing the state park system. >> now the legislature will decide what happens next with that surplus money but most expect it to keep the parks

open. the state attorney general's office is investigating what happened with that money. water temperatures are affecting brown pelicans. they are now traveling east searching for food in unprecedented numbers. schools of fish are moving away from the shoreline and that's causing pelicans to go after them moving inland to find food. state officials say don't feed the birds if you happen to find them in your area. any troubled spots, sal? some people think it is a troubled spot trying to get into the city and you can see a little bit of slowing coming up on the bay bridge. let's go to the east shore freeway and we had an accident on san pablo low which is affecting the westbound commute. moving along and taking a look

in business news. we will go ahead and smile and say good morning, thank you for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news, it is a tuesday july 24th, i am dave clark. time now 6:30 we are on the scene of breaking news where we know two people were killed in an apartment fire. tara moriarty joins us with new information about the victims, tara? >> reporter: we learned that the couple were boyfriend and girlfriend in their 30s. initially they said they were elderly but they were in their 30s and they were smokers. the investigator is here to try to piece it together. we are told where the couple lived it was heavily damaged. flames shot 20 - 30 feet into the air. one neighbor shot this picture off your cell phone. two people ran out when they is heard their smoke alarm this morning.

they said the fire had been cooking for at least a half hour. >> if there were no smoke alarms it would be easy for a fire to progress to the point where people were not able to get out. >> i have never seen anything like this. it is like the biggest barn fire magnified. >> reporter: the red cross is working on temporary housing and the couple who called 911 ran back inside the building and the chief told them to get out. >> you never know what is happening and the fire could be above your head and collapse on you at any time. we understand people go back for all the precious stuff we all have mementos and stuff but we need to recognize this is a precious situation. >> reporter: the couple had two cats and a dog and at least one of those cats died, we will

keep you posted on any new information that comes in. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 morning news. 2:00 a.m. neighbors noticed a fire burning on 35th avenue and began spraying it with hoses. they say the house has been empty for about a month and they also say they have seen squatters going in and out. there is no fire going to the house and they are investigating how the fire started. and an eight-year-old boy is in the hospital after almost drowning. live in san jose to tell us how a neighbor rescued this child. >> reporter: the boy is listed in serious condition at the children's hospital and this is the pool where the near drowning happened. you can see the pool is five feet deep and it is located in the center of a community of manufactured homes in north san

jose. police say just after 7:00 p.m. the eighth-year-old boy nearly drowned in the housing complex onyxel son lane -- on nicolson lane. two others in the pool had been playing a game of who could hold their breath under the water the longest. we spoke with one parent who lives here this morning and said it serves as a wakeup call to never take your eyes off your children while at the pool. >> i am always watching out for the kids, i don't see the kids but we are the parents and it is scary cause something could happen. >> reporter: there is a sign posted at the pool which says children under the age of 14 must be accompanied at the pool and it is unclear when this near drowning happened. just to let you know, there are

are signs that -- are signs that say no lifeguard is on duty and some neighbors expressed concern about that. they got a suspicious envelope in the mail and they saw the envelope yesterday and recognized it as similar to the ones with white powder inside. it was immediately isolated and taken outside. six other local police departments received envelopes like that on friday and saturday. the powders inside deemed to be harmless and the fbi is investigating. he was shot and killed after an argument with his son. it happened at 7:00 p.m. at 30 court. seven people were in the home when james morris and his son got into an argument.

they struggled over a gun and during the confrontation morris was hit and died at the scene. two others at the shooting spree are now recovering at home. the university of colorado and aurora each released information. several of those patients are said to be in critical condition. >> he was in home he seen seemed to dose off and some of the victim's family members were there in court. for how much hurt he has done to this state, this whole nation, i mean, i don't think he is hurting yet and i think he needs to. >> holmes is expected to be

appeared at three fundraisers. the president is on the move again and it includes stops in portland organ and seattle washington. in other news, the oakland standoff began in oakland and it came to an end just hours ago. police arrested one suspect, wanted for firing shots at a chp patrol car and that arrest followed a 12 hour standoff at a home in east oakland. also this morning, 2 people have just died in an early morning apartment fire in pleasantville. 60 more people have been displaced. we are trying to help them with temporary shelter. flames shot 20 feet in the air and you can see it for miles. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. following overnight news from richmond. police are looking into clues from an early morning shooting.

you can see near the gate, the second one happened earlier back in january, you can see there is actually notes written to that person and his name was edwin and i will have more on that in a second. this is what we know about this morning's shooting and we have very limited information and a person was shot in the 2100 block. that person had to be airlifted and is expected to survive. right now we do not know of a motive or if anybody is in connection with that shooting. i can tell you if it is also where the college student edwin martinez was shot back in january. he was sitting in a parked car with his sister. he first began shooting after

he ran after another car. the gunman opened fire on martinez and his sister who was not hurt. coming back out, there are some notes that are written by, it appears edwin's girlfriend saying i love you rest in peace and those things but of course we will stay on top of this current shooting and bridge it to you -- bring it to you as soon as we find out more about it. live in richmond ktvu channel 2 morning news. a man is in custody after telling police in maine he took a loaded gun into a showing of the dark knight rises he was driving 112 miles per hour. now in his car they found an arsenal of guns and four handguns. he told police he had brought a gun to a saturday night showing of the batman movie. he also said at the time of his arrest he was driving to new hampshire to shoot a former

employer. in southern california, clark was arrested during the dark knight rises and started yelling when the movie did not start on time. he shouted quote, i should go off like in colorado and does nineveh gun? he was not armed. time now 6:47 new video from state college pennsylvania, they just tore down the walls that stood behind joe paterno in the football stadium. the plaques were removed and put into storage. university decided to take down the joe paterno statue after the investigation found joe paterno and penn state administrators hid sexual abuse claims against jerry sandusky. they are deploying 12,000 extra troops to protect the

being helped along by a weak area of a couple of low pressure systems and now that that has moved out, it is giving us a more of a westerly breeze, still 80s and also 90s. it is a bigger fog bank and cooling continues for most. i will tell you why in just a second. now the west wind is in place. and now to the delta, there will be a couple of locations still in the 90s. and something unusual happened. they were warmer than gilroy and san martinez and morgan hill. 91 and san jose 88 and san jose state and santa clara 88 and they all beat san martinez which is nothing something that happens often.

it is mild conditions for the santa clara valley and most conditions continue that cooling pattern because low pressure is moving in and high pressure is on its way out of here. so fog along the coast, once it hits it will be sunny, breezy and cool for some, novato 77, 79 walnut cream, 69 alameda. kept right in touch with morgan hill and saratoga go los gatos. 60s and 70s on the coast. over the next few days temperatures settle and we will keep it there and will be in view for the weekend. another round of layoffs, they plan to get 1,300 jobs with a move to streamline operations. the company did not say how many of those cuts would be here in the bay area last year the company cut 10,000 jobs to save a billion dollars. all right, let's check in on

last year. well the second suspect in the killing of a san francisco father and two sons is due back in court 9:00 a.m. this morning. they are expected to file former charges against wilfredo reyeye he was in the car during the 2008 shooting that killed tony balogna and his sons michael and matthew bologna. and another gang member is doing life for his motives in the killings. now the trial could begin in just a few weeks. last months sanchez and norwood pled not guilty after the brutal attacks outside dodgers' stadium. bryan stow suffered severe brain injuries. and a dvd is being released to benefit the bryan stow
