the fire at a complex on donegal court killed two and displaced 60 more. terry moriarty has been on the story and why the couple who died never had a chance. tara? >> reporter: they were not able to locate any smoke detectors inside the apartment. you can see how badly damaged it is. officials say that could have made the difference between life and death. >> reporter: a couple in the 30s trying to escape the apartment alive. >> i was dead asleep and this big fire. there was so much smoke and it was a huge flame. huge fire ball. >> i have never seen anything like that. that would be like the biggest bonfire i have ever seen like magnified. >> the couple, a boyfriend and girlfriend did not survive. at 3:30 this morning, the people ran out of complex on

donegal court. most barefoot and in their pajamas. >> reporter: the fire had been raging for a half hour before they arrived. it shows flames leaping 20 to 30 feet in the air. >> smoke was heavy. we could see it from downtown. it is off of gregory. >> reporter: people who live next door to the burning apartment say their smoke alarm went off. no one heard a detector coming from the couple's apartment. >> if there is no smoke alarms it is easy for the fire to progress to the point where people couldn't get out. >> reporter: the fire broke out on the bottom floor of the apartment. firefighters say they with requested a safety check of all smoke alarms in the complex recently. the landlord did comply with the order two months ago. red cross is finding shelter for the 18 people displaced.

before his stop in oakland. he drew cheers from supporters during his appearance at the fox theater last night. there were groups downtown protesting everything. arctic oil drilling. federal crackdowns on medical marijuana. >> he hasn't come through with the reforms that the people who voted for him, the liberals that voted for him wanted him to pursue. >> three poem were arrested at the center and a private home in piedmont. presidential candidate mitt romney was in california while fundraising. he attacked the president on the economy. he told a group of small business owners that the president is out of ideas and out of excuses. 2/3rd of the people say washington is at fault.

the mass shooting memorial has grown to $2 million. the film studio that made the "dark knight rises" have made generous contributions to the fund. two more survivors returned home and 16 others are still hospitalized. the shooting spree left 12 dead and the families are now planning their funerals. gun sales are spiking in colorado following the shooting massacre. denver post reports that background checks jumped between friday and sunday. also an increase in the number of class sign ups for concealed weapons training. it is not an unusual reaction. similar increases occurred after the shooting in tucson that injured gabrielle giffords and a virginia tech shooting in 2007. police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on a man.

the shooting happened at 3:00 a.m. on nevin avenue from the richmond bart station. the victim was shot multiple times and airlifted to the hospital. they have not released his identity. this is the same area where a 22-year-old college student was gunned down back in january. mitch pond police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man who had gotten into an argument with his son. it happened at a home on sun court. james morris and his 22-year-old sun struggled over a gun which went off. >> at this point, i don't know what the argument was about. obviously, something critical led up to some of it happening and the gun going off. we are investigating all leads and talk to everyone that was there. >> the man died at the scene. they are investigating as a possible homicide. it is busy in the east bay.

how a 12 hour standoff finally ended and its connection to a bay area's close call last weekend. >> 27-year-old man is dead after falling from a 12,000-foot mountain. on sunday, justin herald was beginning his descent in the grand teton national park on sunday. group of hikers saw him drop from sight. they found his body a thousand feet down the mountain. he had been living in wyoming earning his certification in emergency rescue. 8-year-old boy is in a hospital after a swimming accident in a pool. we are joined live by how a simple game in the water nearly turned deadly. >> reporter: the housing complex is back open today. this is where the near drowning occurred. kids are out here having fun and news of the near drowning spread quickly among the residents. they are hoping for the boy's recovery. they are listed in serious

condition at the hospital. >> children were laughing and playing game in the housing complex on nicholson lane. they tell us it was a game in the water that nearly cost the boy his life last night. >> they are playing holding their breath under the water the longest. >> just after 7:00. a teenager pulled the boy out of the water and another mother performed cpr. >> the boy was lifeless and they were able to resuscitate him. >> he is recovering at lucille pack card's children hospital and his mom is at his side. >> very scared. lots of prayers for her. she is very, very scared. >> reporter: this is the second near drowning this year. last year there was six near drownings in an one week period in the summer. that's why this mother is having her son take swimming lessons. >> he hasn't had them since he is a year old.

. another big drop on wall street today as concerns over spain and greece weigh on the market over the outlook and the euros and debt crisis. among the corporate earnings, united parcel service and at&t and dupont don't expect much profit because of the global weakness in the economy. the dow is down 156. nasdaq is down 37 and s&p down one. cisco system assist planning another round of layoffs. they will cut a hundred jobs to streamline operations that is 2% of the global workforce. they did not say how many of the cuts would be in the bay area. last year, they cut 10,000 jobs

to save a billion dollars. new yorkers will have their say on a proposed ban of large sugary drinks in restaurants and movie theaters. the ban need only the approval of the new york city's board of health but opponents could sue to block it. new york city mayor bloomberg said it is necessary to combat the obesity epidemic. breaking news out of san francisco. a rescue is underaway to help someone from the side of a cliff in the outer richmond district. these are images from news chopper two in the eagle point area. that is 32nd avenue and el camino del mar. one person is stuck on a cliff. they are sending a boat to help with the operation from below. you can see a gathering of rescue crews up at the top of the cliff. can't really see where the person who needs to be rescued
