claudine wong in today for tori campbell. despite installing a multi- million dollar system one year ago once again the oakland police department is facing a radio failure. this time it happened during monday's presidential visit. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live with what caused it and what is next for the department. >> reporter: well, one lieutenant actually called it a train wreck, of course talking about the new radio system and they say they experience up to 500 glitches every month and that has to stop. [ cheers ] >> reporter: it could have been a disaster. >> please welcome the president of the united states. [ cheers ] >> reporter: while everything went smoothly on stage at the fox theater during the president's visit behind the scenes police assigned to his security were not able to talk to each other on the new radio system for 30 minutes. >> or officers have no confidence in it.

it puts officers and the citizens in jeopardy. the communications issues became serve an hour after mr. obama left oakland, when police were keeping tabs on demonstrators who lingered, occasionally blocking streets. the radios had been previously plagued by break downs and dead zones, leaving officers digital radios prone to blackouts but many thought that was fixed when the city paid 18 million dollars for a new system last summer. >> on a regular basis officers don't know when or where it is just not going to work, they hit the mic and it fails. the problem monday stemmed from the failure of a cooling unit on a transmission tower and wasn't until tuesday night things were operating again. >> i just want officers to be able to communicate with one another during critical situations and take away this concern we have with a radio system that doesn't work.

>> they are working with a consultant to decide if they should repair the current network or join another one. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police in oakland are looking for suspects in a shooting. investigators say two people were wounded in the gunfire last night. both victims drove themselves to a hospital and are expected to survive. there is no word on what led up to the shooting. the violence on the streets of oakland is prompting city leaders to urge everyone to attend next month's national night out events. the rock parties are held in neighborhoods across the country to generate community support in the campaign against crime. both oakland mayor jean kwan and police chiefs howard jordan are hoping for a strong turn out on august 7th. new details on a story we have been following since morings on 2. police have called off a search for a suspected car thief there. investigators say the suspect

crashed a stolen jeep into a curb this morning then took off on foot. officers set up a perimeter and searched it thoroughly before giving the all clear. >> we are we are towing the car and figure out who is responsible for this. >> police are looking for a white or hispanic male 25 years old. they are investigating the city's third homicide this week. last night officers got a call about a car hitting a pedestrian in downtown san jose. when they arrived they found a man face down on the ground. he had been stabbed. paramedics performed cpr but he died at the hospital. there are no suspects and the victim's identity is being withheld. police say he is in his 20s. the suspect wanted for the killing of a young mother and father may have fled to southern california or mexico. last night police released this

picture of pedro medina, he has a grim reaper tatoo and the initials tattooed on his back. he is accused of killing the couple while they were at their home with their three children on monday. family members say medina had dated her. a mother on the peninsula is describing the moments as a car crashed into her house nearly missing her sleeping baby. it all happened in east palo alto at 5:15 this morning. and janine de la vega is live at the scene to give as damage inside that home. >> reporter: claudine, right now the family has taken that baby to a clinic to get her checked out as a precaution even though she seems to be okay because this was a close call for the family as you can see from all this damage. the car came barreling through this neighborhood into this house, crashing into a bedroom and leaving this big gaping hole in the wall. debris was scattered all over this bedroom inside this home

on cooley avenue. at 5:15 this morning a black cadillac crashed into the room just inches away from the bed and this bassinet where a girl was sleeping next to her mother. >> we woke up to the big headlights right in our faces and my little brother actually had to break down our door to let us out because it was jammed us because all we smelled was gas, so we just need toad needed to get out of there quick. >> police say it was traveling 55 miles an hour when it rammed into the room before coming to a rest here. it clipped the house next door leaving broken bricks and glass. gutierrez didn't see the people in the car but neighbors did. >> there was two guys and a girl in the car and they ran. they did not stop to see if we were okay. and they must have heard me because we were screaming, my brother all he seen was a shot

of them jumping out of the car. she is a cousin of the mayor, who came rushing to the scene. the children were injured and gutierrez had minor scrapes, when police arrived everyone had fled. >> people were saying the occupants, a few of them were -- left the area on foot, running to we immediately started checking the area and could not find anyone associated with this vehicle. >> gutierrez is grateful they are alive. and as you can see from all this damage this room is unliveable, so the family has had to make other arrangements for sleeping at least for the next couple of weeks. while they are grateful they are alive they are just hoping, too, that police will catch those responsible. live from east palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the post is reporting a suspicious package delivered to the university of colorado's

medical school in aurora was a notebook sent by the alleged gunman in the aurora theater shooting. reports citing law enforcement sources say the notebook, which was sent before friday's shooting, was sent to a university psychiatrist and contained drawings depicting a massacre. the suspect recently dropped out of a neuro science ph.d. program at the university of colorado. tenants at his apartment building were allowed to return today. micro blogging sight twitter experienced an outage today for the second time in just over a month. visitors to the site were greeted with a message saying twitter is down. problems were reported nationwide for more than an hour, the company issued a statement saying its engineers were working to resolve it but doesn't go into detail. it comes one day before the olympic opening ceremonies expected to cause a spike in traffic. >> totally disgusted. hopefully they can do something

the mayor of anaheim says he lands to meet with the members of the u.s. attorney's office and the fbi tomorrow to review recent police shootings, after 4 straight days of protests that turned violent last night. or last night was actually quiet. there have been 5 deadly officer involved shootings in anaheim this year including two this weekend. investigators are still trying to figure out who opened fire last night. around 10:00 last night they got calls of shots being fired in north richmond. they got there and found spent cartridges on the street, lawn and sidewalks and witnesses say it appeared someone was

targeting an office. so far no suspects. fire crews say a burning cigarette may be to blame for a fire in oakland. it happened after 8:00 last night on harrison. the fire broke out in a unit on the 5th floor. they found a mattress on fire and it took 20 minutes to put it out and the occupants have been displaced. friends and family are asking for help finding a woman because they are worried about her safety. clara francis disappeared yesterday while on her way to her grandson's house. she suffers from alzheimer's. you can see her picture there, 5'4," 102 pounds and wearing a red sweater and blue jeans. she was driving a gray chevy cobalt. the license number was 5-p-d-e- 9-1-1. pacifica police are also asking for your help to track

down a missing 76-year-old woman. maria janson disappeared yesterday afternoon last seen by her husband near their home. she does like to walk nearby trails, 5'5," weighs 105 pounds and last wearing yellow croc shoes. we now know why so many bart escalators are north working in downtown san francisco. it seems homeless people have been using those escalators as a bathroom. bart workers say they pulled apart the escalators at civic center and found so much human ex-creement they had to call in a hazmat team because it clogged up the wheels and gears. >> they just relief themselves anywhere you know. and if they had a bathroom, two or three on every corner that might help. >> part says its officers can only cite them if they see the crime being committed. a bay area natural food company has announced a recall

due to contamination. the san francisco herb and natural food company have pulled several lots. the company acknowledges reports its warehouse was infested with rodents. they sale over the internet and a message on its page said it was currently under construction. san francisco city officials are trying to get the word out about millions of dollars available to people who use certain payday lenders. the city attorney dennis herrera this morning was in front of the money mart on market street. he says people who received short-term loans from them are eligible for a portion of the 7.5 million dollar settlement for predatory lending. >> individuals across the state of california could file claims and receive up to 1800 dollars in reimbursement, make sure we get the word out in protecting

park. the demonstration has not been called off. check these pictures out. this trucker had app embarrassing tangle with a tree in san francisco this morning. this all happened al fill at fillmore and sacramento streets, it was wedged there, it looks like it pulled out and took the branch with it. a few firefighters with that chainsaw but then they cleared that up and the truck got out of there. >> the bay area has been cooling off over the past few days. in oakland this is the overcast. you notice in the middle portion of your screen a little bit of clearing and that clearing trend will continue at least in the short-term over the next two to three hours. take a look at our mapping system, a cloud pattern, of course hug in the coastline and patches moving into san francisco bay, around oakland and richmond and berkeley as

well. clouds will clear back and work their way west over the next few hours. for today we do have this, clearing to near the coast as we just said. tomorrow warm numbers inland. not a big change in the temperatures. then for this weekend we do warm things up just a little bit, but month major heat waves in the forecast. current numbers just updated fairfield checking in 70 degrees. san francisco at 60. san jose upper 60s at 69. we are in between two extremes here. this area of high pressure would be the source of heat but this has been the biggest player of the past few days, this low pressure, so today cooler than yesterday, temperatures cooling off about two to four degrees from yesterday's highs. as that high builds in we will warm things up a little bit to the weekend. it looks like sunday will be the warmest day. these are all just small changes with a little bit of a bump in the numbers over the next few days for saturday, sunday and into early next week. we will keep the cool temperatures for the coast side until the next few days. forecast highs this afternoon,

all right. there is a look at your big board at this hour, the dow is up more than 200 points. it has been a strong morning all morning ever since the european federal bang president pledged to do whatever it takes to stop them from collapsing, including that. also doing well on the market today sprint, home depo and disney also performing well today but is is not all good news, two big names in the bay area are also the focus of well street, we are talking about facebook and zinga and one of them dragging down the other, facebook is set to realize its quarterly earnings. it doesn't come out until after the closing bell but the stock is not responding and people are not predicting it is a good report. we talked to people who said they don't use it as often as they did in the past. >> privacy is not that well, even can find you, everybody
