>> reporter: a day of high hopes and expectations at facebook and once again it was a day of disappointment, which means a lot of investors may not like facebook as much as the company wants. the tone faded since mark zuckerberg rang the opening bell in may when facebook went public. there were gloomy predictions about their first earnings report today echoed by users we talked too. >> i think it is way too corporate. i used it a lot in college but more of my information is being sold. >> reporter: facebook's report was mixed, it met wall street's expectations, although one time charges resulted in a net loss of $157 million, which is not what investors wanted. >> they are expecting an apple-

the stock fallen. it closed today at 2684 which is a 29% drop. a report today says facebook is working to introduce its own smartphone. htc is working with a team of engineers to develop the phone. wall street had its best day in a month. the dow is up 211 to 12,887. the nasdaq is up 39 at 2,893. the s&p is up 22 at 1,360. twitter is apologizing tonight for an outage earlier today. visitors this morning saw a message saying the site was down. problems were reported world wide. the company said the outage was the result of a double whammy.

there was a system failure and the backup system failed at the same time. they say we apologize for the interruption you had today. it happened in broad day light, four armed men go into the new park mall. ktvu's kara lieu tells us what happened next. >> reporter: they burst into the store with black hoodies. they threatened two customers and two employees with pistols and a machine gun. >> reporter: jewelry cases smashed, zena jewelers inside new park mall was turned into a crime scene while folks were shopping. police say four men stormed into a store. >> all armed with pistols and one possibly armed with a

higher caliber mack 10 semi- automatic. >> reporter: the robbers were aggressive. they broke glass cases with their guns and shots were fired inside the store. >> we are not sure if the shots were intended to injure or scare or use while they were banging into the glass cases with the fire arms. the four men ran out of the store and threw jc penney -- through jc penney and jumped into two waiting get away cars. they are described as four african american males in their 20s, wearing black hoodies. they got away in a white 2008 mercedes e-class and a black acura or lexus with a license plate number of 6lwz43. they took off north bound on the 880 and they know this because when they ran out of jc penney security was in the parking lot close by so they were able to follow them for a

the city's third homicide this week. a man was found at north second. police were called last night. he had one stab wound and died as paramedpics tried to save -- paramedics tried to save him. a man accused of killing his girlfriend was in court today. he faces murder charges in the death of his girlfriend. who was killed in their home last month. today his attorney received the autopsy report and the hearing was continued till next thursday. the san francisco fire department does not solicit donations of any kind, that is the word as they are warning people about two scams. people are using e-mail and phone calls to ask for donations. but she says they are not

the work and getting paid less. ktvu's david stevenson is live with how the group is getting support from different groups. >> reporter: look across the street from me. we estimated there is about 300 workers and their supporters gathered in front of the union square hotel this protest began after 4:00. that is when hundreds of housekeepers here end their shift. >> it is clear, not just in san francisco, but throughout the united states, it is one of the worse employers. >> reporter: they launched a boycott of the chain. protesters say they discouraging union organizing and hire minimum wage workers with little more no health benefits. housekeepers claim injuries and -- complain of injuries and say

races continue. they needed help with the insurance premium after last year's disaster in which a plane crashed and killed 11 people. it spiked to $2 million. they agreed to a $600,000 sponsorship to help pay for insurance. we know what caused last night's fire at a hotel in oakland. it was a cigarette on a mattress in the downtown area. the fire broke out at 8:00 p.m. on the fifth floor. 100 people were safely evacuated and no one was hurt. firefighters are hoping that night fall will give them a better shot of containing a wildfire, it is burning west of the national forest.

busy bart station-they found human waste at civic center bart. ktvu's rob roth is live with why it is almost impossible for police to catch the offenders. rob? >> reporter: the smell in this escalator here at the bart station was so bad today we saw people holding their nose as they were riding. it is what workers found down there that was really disgusting. and other hazards. in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. ford ask recalling a half million vehicles around the world. the recall covers ford escapes and mavericks with crews control made between 2001 and 2004. they will fix the problem that can cause gas pedals to stick. there have been 13 crashes so far linked a to the problem, including one death in arizona. the cables can snag and cause the gas pedal to stick. dealers will change it to correct the problem. 841,000 tires are being recalled. mishlen tires says they were sold as replacement tires. the tires are being recalled because the tread can separate causing air loss but so far there have been no reports of injuries. three men charged in
