the new light system is meant to flood the road with light. the light poles were manufactured in nebraska. the challenge to create a diagnosal pole. >> this pole is 2 inches thick and it's strictly to be able to take the shock the of an earthquake. >> reporter: the lightnings were developed by musco's light in iowa. >> it was from scratch and designed only for this project. it's definitely a first. >> reporter: the led system costs $18 million. caltrans says it will save money in the long run because the led lights are about 50% more energy efficient than the current sodium vapor lights.

new video tonight from the south bay. a bicyclists was struck by a car and killed in campbell this evening about 6:30 p.m. the 28-year-old driver did stop and is cooperating with authorities. the driver is being identified as a 68-year-old man. police are also asking witnesses to come forward. david stevenson reports the workers are getting support from groups that have nothing to do with hospitality. >> reporter: about 300

protesters picketed outside the grand hyatt hotel in san francisco today part of a week long protest of the chain. >> it's turned out that hyatt is if your honoring out to be the -- hyatt is turning out to be the worse employer in hospitality. >> reporter: with little or no health benefits, the union workers have been in talks for nearly three years. >> this hotel has not been fair to the employees. we want a fair contract, we want to be able to recruit other members within our hotels here in the city. >> reporter: the national labor relations board recently sited the workers union for its tactics in bargaining with the chain. the grand hyatt's general manager says most employees love working here and that the union is cautioning the tension.

orinta accused of killing his girlfriend. 62-year-old jim collins faces murder charges in the case of his girlfriend 56-year-old evangeline. the additional torture charge would make collin eligible for the death penalty. barry bonds is asking for yet another delay in the appeal of his conviction in an obstruction of justice charge. bond wants a two week postponement for a brief that is due a week from today. originally the brief was due in march but both bonds and federal prosecutors have asked for and received postponements. call it a break down in communication. the oakland police union says officers two way radios failed again during the president's visit. as ktvu's mike mibach reports, it's a problem that has bogged the department for some time now and it is not yet fixed. >> reporter: it's a radio

a 10-year-old girl from san ramon has reached a major milestone in her courageous battle against osteosarcoma. we've been following the battle. and tonight ktvu's julie haener has an update on how she's doing now and also some exciting news that she received stemming from her long recovery. >> reporter: making her way in on crutches, brian brohamen is entering a new phase. the brohamen family says this is one medical appointment they are looking forward to. >> we are ready. >> reporter: after having her left leg amputated above her knee, breezy as she likes to be called is about to be fitted for her first prosthetic reg. >> i am just really glad everything gets to be started.

it's going to be really worth it. >> let's have you stand up. >> reporter: glen ellis has been making prosthetics for 15 years. on this day he's giving breezy the opportunity to walk. with mom and dad looking on. he applies pressure near the top of the cast helping to mold the cast around breezy's tiny body. it's not an easy transformation going from plaster to plastic to prosthetic. allen says this is when his process turns into art. the mold is carefully designed so breezy's weight rests on the

top rather than the bottom. doctors don't want any pressure at the end of the limb until her bone is healed. >> for the first fitting it's coming out better than expected. but a few more adjustments need to be made. all the while, breezy keeps up her good sense of humor. when the family shows up for the final appointment, the prosthetic is ready to go. it's fitted with breezy's favorite color and an inspirational quote. but before she can use it, she has to learn how to use it. learning will take practice and time. >> it's strong. i feel it when it clicks. >> reporter: everyone though it's going to take some getting ewed to one word comes to mind when you ask breezy what she thinks about her new device. >> it's just excitement. >> over all kind of just a real good feeling as a parent to

we've been following for you. squatters taking over vacant properties. the city has issued a notice to the bank that owns two units. oakland wants the building cleaned up and the people living there removed. the residents told us they cleaned up the place and they don't have to pay rent. we'll continue to follow the story and see what develops. one of the victims of last week's deadly shooting rampage inside an aurora, colorado movie theater shooting was laid to rest today. medick was one of a dozen people killed when a gunman burst into the premier of a new batman premier. she worked at a subway and was saving money for a trip to india. people at the makeshift memorial thanked the officers for risking their own lives to try and save their loved ones.

a new movie that contained a violent shoot out scene at a theater will not be released this fall. time warner announced it will release the movie called mobster squad. the movie includes a scene that shows gangsters shooting into a movie theater. google had been adding fiber lines in the region after saying last year that the metro area would be the first in the country to receive its broad band service. google says it's fiber for community service will deliver ultra fast internet access for a monthly fee of $70. a very good day on wall street. the dow gained 211 points the nasdaq was up 39. investors reacted to comments from the european central bank

during sandusky's trial he was identified only as victim number two. the man says he's now stepping forward to make sure there's justice for the victims of sandusky's sex crimes. an attorney says they intend to file a civil suit against penn state university. you will recall jurors convicted sandusky last month on 45 counts of sexual a abuse. he is currently awaiting sentencing. ford is recalling 400,000 escapes to fix a problem that can cause the car to accelerate unexpectedly. the problem is with a speed control cable that can cause gas pedals to stick. the recall involves escapes made from 2001 to 2004 and equipped with v6 engines and cruise controls. in news of the world tonight from saudi arabian tv, syria's most prominent defector offered to unite the rebels. malaf tolaf says he failed to convince his former friend

president assad to step down. government forces are reportedly massing outside of the city preparing to retake it. in china authorities raised the death toll from this past weekend's flooding in beijing to 77. that's up from 37. but some online accounts say the death toll is actually closer to 300. there has also been rare public criticism of the government for the flooding in the capital and the government's apparent failure to improve the infrastructure during an enormous building boom. an in havana, cuban leader raul castro says he is willing to mend fences with the united states and sit down and discuss anything but he said only as long as it is between equals. mr.castro made the remarks at the ends of a revolution day ceremony. the u.s. and cuba have not had diplomatic relations for five decades. the growth of our country reflected on the economy. we'll explain how.

it's shallow it's usually hot. mid-70s upper 70s. low 80s where there should be 90s. mid-80s low 80s where there should be upper 90s. that's how it goes tomorrow. another cool to mild day. the reason for that is this low pressure center it's been the story all summer. it's giving firefighters a break. calfire loves this thing because it gives northern california a real break from the low humidities and the heat. so tomorrow just like today. now, as we head into friday or as we head into saturday that low migrates east. the high builds up and temperatures start to increase. it's not going to get real hot but it's coming into the 70s. sunday is going to be your warmest day. these are forecast highs for over 60 cities around the bay area. we have a lot more than 50 cities but these are the big ones. 80 in fairfield, 79 in sonoma, 65 in salsalito. good air quality, pollen is not an issue.
