well good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day it's friday july 27th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. steve paulson is here with the forecast. pretty mild. about the same as we've had. >> there is a lot of low clouds in place. there is a very significant sea breeze out to the delta. things cool down into yesterday. we will carry those over into today. 60s and 70s and 80s. what about the warmer weather? we'll have that discussion in seven minutes. right now north and southbound 880 looking pretty good if you are driving here to the coliseum or to the airport. the traffic is moving along very nicely. also this morning we are looking at interstate 80. nice clear shot here. traffic is moving well to the toll plaza. 6:01 let's go back to the tech. >> we are following developing news this morning. crews have shut off that huge water main break after an early morning break. ktvu tara moriarty is live there in the area to explain

what caused the break and what charges the driver could face. tara. >> reporter: this is a really great example of why you shouldn't drink and drive. if you look over to the right you can see where this big cone is. right next to it is a hole. that is where a fire hydrant used to be until witnesses say a drunk driver hit it and sheered right off the sidewalk. at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed 50 feet into the air for three hours this morning. crews had a really hard time turning offer the value ever because of the force of the water was so great. they parked their truck over the geyser and were able to get their wrenches in there and shut off it off. it happened around 2:00 this morning when a drunk driver smashed into the hydrant. police took that person into custody. there is a suer right nearby so most of the water went in there. they did not have to shut off

the water to neighbors but there was low water pressure for about three hours. the person responsible for breaking the hydrant will also be responsible for paying for a new one which will cost thousands of dollars and they will be looking at a pretty hefty water bill. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty. in overnight news a man is under arrest after a five hour standoff in santa rosa. last night swat officers surrounded a home on bucks road right near highway 101. the suspect was armed and holding hostages. throughout the evening, several people walked out of the house then shortly after 11:00 last night deputies stormed the home and took the man into custody. time is 6:03. a search goes on for the man suspected of killing in san jose. you have new information from the police. >> reporter: dave makeshift memorial has been set up in front of the home of pedro and

mario. police believe 31-year-old pedro medina may be driving a 2006 black nissan maxima. he may be heading south to los angeles or new mexico. >> if he's thinking he will desolve into new mexico or return to the united states later under a different identity, he is dreaming. we are not going to forget this. >> the couple has three children in the home when they were killed. a vigil was held last night to remember the two.

little low. clearing to the coast. slowly. cool pattern. yesterday also today. temperatures though staying in the 60s and 70s. the gilroy garlic festival can be hot this time of year. that will not be at case today. it will get warmer as you go into the weekend. west, southwest i think gusts to about 32 out at travis. just a rip roaring sea breeze. even southwest at vacaville. there is a little bit of a breeze here in place. it's mainly out of the west, southwest. 51 santa rosa to 59 san jose. one more system has to move through before high pressure down here can build in. it's right there. that keeps our pattern in place. tahoe forecast not bad as well. upper 70s saturday. 80 by sunday. fog, sun breezy. cool morning. cool to mild though. even warm that has a west wind component to it. 60s and 70s.

new this morning. they are some of the forgotten victims in the iraq war. a u.s. report now indicates 719 people were killed while working on projects to rebuild iraq. lawyers, engineers, and contractors. almost half were americans. 4500 u.s. service members died in the war. the number of iraqis killed is estimated at more than 100,000. the pentagon says tens of thousands of civilian employees in the defense department can receive warnings about a potential layoffs just four days before the november election. that is if congress doesn't come to an agreement on avoiding $1.2 trillion in automatic reductions.

massive numbers of layoffs right before the presidential election would be considered a blow to president obama's reelection hopes. 8500 pounds of marijuana seized in a major drug bust at the los angeles harbor. several were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. sense october of last year more than $90 million worth of marijuana has been found on boats. that is four-times more than the year before. a new federal government report comes out in 45 minutes from now. showing california ports are losing too much business to canada. ktvu scott mcfarland is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with financial incentive that is attracting shipping companies to head north. scott. >> reporter: one u.s. congressman calls it an invisible blockade. u.s. transportation department will report that international shippers are bypassing the port of oakland and opting to dock

in canada. in part to save money. one of the issues is a $109 per container u.s. tax that is squeezing the business at our ports. local long shoreman and nearby businesses feel like they are taking a financial hit because of it. the transportation study suggests the u.s. reconsider that tax because canada doesn't levee a similar fee. making canada a more appealing destination for shippers. >> there is an invisible blockade on ships and containers coming into the united states. it's the harbor maintenance tax. we need to reform it and invest in our port infrastructure to make our ports more efficient. >> reporter: that harbor maintenance tax is big bucks for thest treasury.

live in washington, scott mcfarland. there is a glimmer of hope in the disappearance of a uc davis student. el dorado county investigators believe she is still alive. lomax was last seen leaving a counseling center in sacramento where she was getting treatment following a stress related break down. she is considered at risk because she needs medication. they are focusing on her facebook account, cell phone, and bank accounts. 6:15. the san francisco fire department sending out a warning making sure you don't become a victim of a scam. someone has been calling homes and businesses cruising the fire department's name to ask for money or personal items. the fire department says it never solicits. if you think you have been a victim contact the fire department right away. three bay area medical teams will get $60 million in research grants. stanford doctors want a $20

million grant for heart studies. they received another $20 million to research children born without a functional immune system. and stem cells incorporated of newark received a similar amount for a spinal cord study. california institute for regenretive medicine awarded $151 million to eight groups investigating the answers to medical mysteries. china says more than 10,000 people have been arrested in a crack down on internet crimes. they include disseminating pornography, transporting guns and wiretapping. first lady michelle obama is leading the u.s. delegation to the olympics in london. she is a pretty good athlete there. this is new video of her in london. the first lady is tying in the olympics with her efforts to encourage kids to exercise. this was an event for 1,000

military children in london. 6:17. drivers of walnut creek you may be able to feed the meter without getting out of your car. . in a couple weeks an app will be available to allow drivers to pay to park pat a meter with their cell phones. >> sometimes you're lucky you get some change out of the seat. and throw that in. and not worry if it will run or not. they plan to test that federal on low kansas street. all of us will probably work -- let's check in with sal. >> good morning, to you. good friday morning. let's start off with a look at the bay bridge from treasure island. the traffic is moving well on that span. and there is the new span in fan of the old span there.

the traffic on the old span moves well into treasure island. you can see it. it's a nice looking drive all the way through into san francisco. moving along to the toll plaza there is not much of a delay. there won't be because the traffic is so light. now we can say that dave was right. it is a friday light. and this morning on westbound 580 we do have slowing coming in from tracy to livermore. it's not as bad as it normally is. 6:18 let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. happy friday. nice tweet from brandon who is over in pacifica. he said steve foggy and wet. there is a lot of fog out there and local drizzle. even the fog has made it pretty far inland. another cool day. today is probably the coolest day and after that we will start a little warmup. fog bank though 2500 feet. local drizzle. it doesn't take much when you go along 28 miles an hour wind.

those are all sea breeze directions. 50s on the temps. 59 san jose. just sent out three pictures from san jose state meteorology department. everyone is in on the party for the low overcast. it will be slow to burn off. one little guy right there. we'll see a little bit warmer temps. today though mists. a lot of gray out there. 60s and 70s for most. a few upper 70s and low. you have to be well away from the coast to get mid 80s in this pattern. slightly warmer on the weekend. inland temps will come up. especially into sunday. wall street journal reports by 2014 ford will use aluminum. now that would cut more than 700 pounds from the truck and improve fuel efficiency but could also increase the cost of

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we have breaking news from anaheim. there has been another police shooting. we understand that officers

were investigating a burglary at about 3:15 this morning. one officer chased the burglar while another patrolman shot at the suspected getaway driver. it's unclear if it was hit while it managed to escape. the burglar was eventually caught. now there have been five deadly police shootings in anaheim this year. that has led to protests across the country and down there in anaheim as will. also including here in the bay area. we understand another officer involved shooting. we will have more details coming up. back here in the bay area another police break down may be the last straw for oakland. the city is considering joining a new communication network slated to begin in september. oakland spent $18 million on the radio system last year but officers say it failed 500 times a month. transmission tower went offline on monday preventing officers from communicating with each

other. however the police say the president's security was never effected. 6:25. cal tran conducted the first test of a unique futureon the new eastern span of the bay bridge. take a look at how it looked during last evening's commute when that new led light system first went on just like that. the light shot through the dark from poles as high as 65 feet tall. now this system is designed to increase visibility while at the same time minimizing light pollution. >> it's very sophisticated. it's designed to be safe for drivers. but also aesthetic to you know go with the world class theme we're going for. >> those poles were especially designed so their shape compliments the main tower and they are safe in a major earthquake. the system cost about $18 million. the cal tran says it will save money in the long run because the lights are 50% more energy efficient. first it was richmond. now another california city is proposing a tax on soda.

help. they are dedicated to transforming and helping under served new york city public school kids. they are being welcomed there. we will smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us it's a friday, july 27th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. >> in the news for you this morning we are finding out a driver who hit a fire hydrant causing an early morning water main break a big one in san francisco may have been under the influence. ktvu tara moriarty was the first reporter at the scene now. she is back so tara how much water was released before they finally turned it off? >> reporter: you know crews we were talking to them they said they were guessing. it could have been at least 50,000 gallons of water. it was coming outs of the hole you see in the sidewalk behind me where a fire hydrant used to be.

the water gushing 50 feet into air for three hours this morning. crews had a really difficult time turning off the valve because the force of that water was so great. eventually workers parked their truck over the geyser and were able to get their wrenches in there and shut it off. the break to the six inch line happened at 2:00 this morning when sources say a drunk driver smashed into the hydrant. police did take that person into custody. it doesn't appear there was flooding to mere homes -- to nearby homes. luckily public works crews did not have to shut off water to neighbors. now the person responsible for breaking the hydrant will also be responsible for paying for a new one. which will cost thousands and thousands of dollars. and they will most likely be responsible for the huge water bill that is the result of the this accident. we are live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. >> thank you. firefighters in san francisco responded to the

presidio overnight. someone living near inspiration point reported seeing fire on the hillside around 2:30 this morning. when the firefighters got there they found bushes and a couple trees on fire. the cause of the fire still under investigation. investigators think it may have been started bay transient. we have new information on the search for the man accused of killing two parents in the south bay. ktvu janine de la vega is in san jose this morning with more on the car police are looking for. >> reporter: pam, police want you to be on the lookout for a specific type of car they believe the suspect was driving. this has been a very difficult case for police because it has been heart wrenching. three children have been left orphaned. you can see the outpouring from the community.

police believe the suspect 31- year-old pedro medina is driving a black 2006 nissan maxima license plate number 6tiw691. they believe he is heading south to l.a., san diego, or mexico. authorities say he gunned down his exgirlfriend marybel jimenez and her husband. they leave behind three children that range in age from five to eight years old. >> they are very choked up about what happened. it's very hard for them. >> reporter: police officers were also at the vigil and their union has set up a fund for the children. we are told that children's aunt is caring for them. if you would like to help, you can go to our website at

ktvu.com and click on web links. reporting live from downtown san jose janine de la vega. time now 6:34. a judge has barred the university of colorado in denver from releasing any records from the accused shooter james holmes. he dropped out a year later. he's now accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others during the showing of the new batman movie the dark knight rises last friday. the judge says giving that information would impede a continuing investigation. holmes is due in court on monday to be formerly charged. and response times of ambulances are being questioned now after last weeks shooting in colorado. the denver post reports at least six nearby medical responders were not called to the scene for more than 20 minutes. some cases they were never called at all.

the aurora, colds fire chief says he's disappointed people are second guessing what he calls the exceptional work by the first responders. london has been preparing for the 2012 summer olympics for years. today is the day the games begin. erin mclaughlin our bay area girl from walnut creek is in london to tell us about the excitement and also about the concerns. how does security look? >> reporter: well, so far so good, pam. excitement is really building here in london earlier today. the olympic flame took a final trip. it took seven years and billions of dollars to get to this point. some 32 olympic venues have been prepared. an entire section of london has been revitalized just for these games. people here are really excited. all looking forward to the

opening ceremony which will take place in the stadium just behind me, pam. >> tell us a little bit about the opening ceremonies. that is a big exciting part. i guess it's still a really big secret they will get to light the call den. >> yes. but what we do know is that billions of people are expected to tune in to tonight's opening ceremonies. dignitaries will be there as well including the first lady michelle obama. presidential candidate mitt romney is also expected to be in attendance. we know it was directed by danny boyle slum dog millionaire fame. and get this the opening act will be called green and pleasant and feature farm animals, cows, chickens, goats. it will be interesting to see how that come together.

bay bridge toll plaza that traffic is not very heavy at all. it's been a light morning so far at the bay bridge toll plaza. just got an e-mail from chp northbound 17 at hamilton avenue. put it on the maps here. the two left lanes are blocked on overturned vehicle and they have issued a cig alert here. that is where the red indicator is. the traffic had been doing well. i have a feeling that is about to change. 6:38 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. a very happy friday morning. lots of low clouds out there. cast see jean says drizzly here. there is a lot of low clouds and fog in place. brent in livermore said the fog is starting to burn off here. the stage is set for what looks to be a cool pattern here. low clouds. very significant sea breeze out to the delta. the higher clouds yesterday zip by. associated with a weak little low. that set the stage for a cooler

pattern. that is here today and also probably into parts of saturday. it does start to look warmer as we go into the weekend. cool for most of the day. temperatures inland although it will be sunny. highs 60s and 70 ann 80s. it will be breezy and windy for some. travis southwest fairfield gust to 32 miles an hour. and overcast at cordelia. my friend mike said there one of the few times it's totally overcast. east, southeast san jose. and southeast up in santa rosa. 51-59 on the lows. a little chill toward the north bay. there is a little right there. heading to tahoe this weekend the mornings are cool, the days are nice. upper 70s or very low 80s. chilly morning a little bit of fog and also drizzle on the coast. but temperatures 60s and 70s and 80s. a lot of 70s in areas that should be ten degrees warmer than this.

holding hostages. just after 11:00 last night deputies stormed the house. they took that suspect into custody. >> san jose police have released information on is a car they believe a double murder suspect is driving now. police say pedro medina may be heading to mexico in a black 2006 nissan maxima. license plate 6tiw691. he is accused of fatally shooting marybel and pedro jimenez monday night. a truck went up in flames near the castro valley, san leandro border. paul chambers is live out there showing us the damage and why they believe that fire was no accident. >> reporter: i will tell you i looked inside the truck you cannot see anything. it's all burnt beyond recognition. take a look for yourself. basically it's just a charred shell of a truck right there. you can see ashes are blowing in it.

everything is gone. we were told that police officer was first on the scene and tried to put out the flames. >> he pulled up and got the fire extinguisher. there was too much smoke. >> reporter: the call came out just after midnight. once firefighters were on scene they had some residence evacuate their homes. the truck sits in the driveway of this house. one man that lives here was afriday the fire would spread to the rest of the house. so he grabbed the dogs and alerted another roommate and headed for the door. >> that was the one thing i was scared about getting the dogs out of the house. everybody got out okay. >> reporter: now you can see the truck is on cinder blocks. that is part of the reason the fire is considered suspicious. wednesday night someone stole all the tires. we will find out exactly what caused this fire and have a better idea what the issue is and talk about if this is

linked to possibly someone stealing the tires just the day before. for the first time we are hearing some of the chilling phone messages that jerry sandusky left for one of his allege the victims -- alleged victims. >> if you can get back to me and let me know, i'd appreciate it. when you get this message give me a call. i'll have to talk to you later. thanks. love you. >> the voice mails were made public by attorneys representing a victim that is planning to file a civil suit against penn state. the man's name has not been released he claims sandusky sexually molested him in a locker room shower in 2001. bail has been set at $50,000 for a santa cruz county man accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl. deputies say he met the teenager at a shopping mall. he offered he a ride home and that is where he had sex with

her. he was arrested after the family became suspicious and confronted him. many people that donated money to save state parks say they want a refund. it all stems from a financial scandal involving $54 million allegedly hidden in two state parks accounts. at the same time, the parks were facing closure because of a lack of money. lawmakers are being asked now to promise extra money will go toward state parks. meantime two more top state park employees are leaving their jobs. 6:4 is the time. let's check in with sal. a fumings have popped up. how is the commute? >> we have a problem as you mentioned. northbound 17 at hamilton avenue it's a crash that is blocking the left lane. they are moving it to the shoulder now. traffic will be slow. and the rest of the south bay freeway is doing well. this is a good morning for you to just avoid 17. perhaps use 85 or use side

we are finding new details about the breaking news we told you about a half hour ago. there was another police shooting overnight in anaheim. police say they responded to a burglar alarm at at community center at 3:15 this morning. they saw appliances on the street and they saw a man leaving the building. one police officer chased the suspected burglar while another officer checked out a nearby car. police say that car came at him that is when the police officer opened fire. the driver of the car escaped but the burglar suspect was

captured. as you know there have been five deadly police shootings in anaheim this year. that has led to violent protest demonstrations in anaheim and other parts of the country. a solidarity protest is planned this evening in oakland. newark police are searching for four men accused of a robbery and shooting inside of a new park mall jewelry store. two employees and two customers were inside the jewelry store about 12:15 yesterday afternoon when the men stormed in with crowbars and semi automatic weapons. they commanded the owner open up the safe and said he would shoot her. one man fired a shot to break up the display case. a mall security guard was able to follow the four men for a short time when they jumped into two get away cars. one described as a 2008 white mercedes e-crass. the other a black lexus.

a major pot bust has connections to san jose. hundreds were removed by the home yesterday and paper work found at the scene indicating that the marijuana was being grown for the san jose based marijuana dispensary. an investigation is now under way. time now 6:56. california farmers say they desperately need extra hands for their summer harvest. increased immigration enforcement and high unemployment are adding to the farm labor shortage. this particular farm you are seeing loses 5% of its cob every day. the peaches stay on the tree and with not enough pickers around well farms like that one they are losing a lot of money and fast. california farmers hope the labor situation gets better because the harvest season runs for another couple months. do you have garlic cravings? you are in luck because this is the gilroy garlic festival. starts today. they will enjoy the pungent
