the glass and the car. as we go over here you can see where the fire hydrant used to be, that is where -- that hole shows where it was until a drunk driver came along. now at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed 50 feet into the air for three hours this morning. that is because witnesses say a drunk driver smashed into the fire hydrant and crewed had a hard time turning off the valve. eventually they parked their truck over it and able to get their wrenches in there and shut it off. it happened around 2:00 and they took the driver into custody. there was no water off but there was low pressure. the person will end up footing

the bill for a new one and a hefty water bill to pay as well. eventually this hydrant will be replaced. >> an arrest has been made in a 5 hour stand off comes to an end. last night a swat team surrounded a house there. the gunman was holding hostages. during the stand off several people walked out of the house. then just after 11:00 p.m. deputies stormed that house and they arrested the suspect. san francisco firefighters were called to the presidio during the night someone living nearby reported searing fire on a hillside. when they got there at 2:30 this morning they found bushes and trees on fire. they put it out in just about 15 minutes.

no one was hurt. a firefighter was taken to the hospital for possible exhaustion. all of this is still under investigation. >> well, time now is 7:03. san jose police have released new information in their search for the man suspected in a double homicide. janine de la vega is live at a memorial for the victims and information on the suspects car, janine. >> reporter: police want people to be on the lookout for a specific type of car they believe that the suspect was driving. there has been a huge outpouring of sympathy and support for the couple who lived at this home. you can see people left flowers and these candles burning all night. here is a picture of the car similar to the one police say castro medina is driving, a 2006 black max mam maxima with that license plate. they think he is headed there.

authorities killed a mountain lion after it knocked down the door of this home. the homeowner called 911 after she heard a loud crash and commotion, she thought she was reporting a burglary, deputies arrived and didn't find the suspect they thought they were looking for, instead that guy, the mountain lion hiding in a tree, authorities shot it saying it posed public safety hazard. >> interesting. three true flies were found in santa clara and they are moving fast to get rid of them. the will put out traps to kill them. 50 traps will be set up every mile for 16 miles, fruit flies attack 230 different kinds of fruit and vegetable crops, it is native to southern asia and if you don't eradicate it quickly it threatens a million

7:28. an overnight fire in the east bay raises fears of arson. a parked truck may have been torched. ktvu's paul chambers is near the castro valley san leandro border where that burned up truck is still in the driveway. right? >> reporter: yes, that is true, i will show you in a second, it has surrounded by criminal activity, take a look, it is

charred up, not too bad but i wanted you to see no stairwell, that is gone, and that is why police and firefighters believe this may be a suspicious fire. >> i saw the flames out the window and saw my roommates truck was on fire so i call 911 and i let my other roommate know to get out of the house because i was afraid it was going to explode. >> ryan hall goes on to say the proximity of the truck to his home is why he thought it would explode. it is in the driveway. he said it grew within seconds. he was scared but calm. grabbed the dogs and alerted a roommate. they made it out safety but this is not the first time they had issued surrounding this track. 24 hours before someone vandalized it. >> someone -- you know somebody came and took off the tires at the truck and he wasn't home. >> once again no one was hurt

and it is being looked at as sus suspicious. you can see the truck on cinderblocks because someone stole the tires and you can see that, and also the proximity of the truck to the house they are lucky it didn't spread further and they are expected to be out here today and decide and make a decision as to what caused the fire and see if it night be linked to the prior crime. >> two peabs babies rescued after the driver led them on a chase. it started after that. the car crashed into another car there. two mall children were inside that stolen car. they were not hurt. the driver was arrested there. another person inside the stolen car ran away but was captured. police have not released information on the connection between the driver and the

children. a police radio breakdown during the president's visit may be the last straw for oakland, they are thinking about joinic that. oakland spent 18 million on its radio system last year but officers say it fails 500 times a month. a transmission tower wept off- line monday preventing them from communicating with each other, however they say the president's security was never affected. >> 7:31, a judge has ordered the university of colorado to seal its records about the former student and accused movie theater shooter james holmes. he enrolled at the medical campus in june 2011 but dropped out a year later. now he is accused of killing 12 and injurying 58 others during the batman movie last friday. the judge says giving out that information would hinder an ongoing investigation. holmes is due back in court monday to be formerly charged.

response times of ambulances are being questioned after last week's movie theater shooting. the denver post reports at least six nearby medical responders were not called to the scene for more than 20 minutes. in some cases they were never called. aurora's fire chief says he is disappointed that people are second guessing what he calls the exceptional work performed by first responders. >> police in camel are urging witnesses to step forward following that. he was hit by a car. the driver stopped and is cooperating. alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. that person is due back in court, they say she ran a red light and hit a victim in a crosswalk. the victim died later. prosecutors have charged her

offering last may. well, this morning south korea samsung reports a record profit of 5.9 billion dollars for the quarter, sales of the phone helped boost their lead over apple and that trend is expected to continue as many fans put off buying new phones until the next one comes out which is possibly october. samsung reports its flat screen division made a profit as lcd prices stabilized. >> 7:46. the latest report from the commerce department is raising new concerns the american economy could be stalling. the government reports the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5%, actually down from 2% for the first three months of this year. that is not enough to lower the unemployment rate. consumer spending slowed as the american people bought fewer computers, cars and other long- term products. the personal savings rate went up by 4%. well michelin is recalling 841,000 tires because the tread

flow limits their options. >> san francisco's transportation agency is considering a plan to attach cameras to street sweepers to help catch drivers parked illegally. two are already outfitted with cameras to determine whether it is possible to get clear images of license plates. in september the program could be expanded to all street sweepers and would allow them to issue citations. thousands of people will by running through san francisco on sunday. the 35th san francisco marathon. runners will take off at 5:30. the route includes a trek across the golden gate bridge. runners crossing the bridge from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and some of the lanes will be closed to traffic. the san francisco marathon is the largest in northern california. >> 7:54. when you think of trend setting cities you might think san francisco, new york, los angeles. now a city in texas beats them all. according to forbes magazine,

you can tell us now what caused us and some charges that may be filed against the driver, tara. fire hydrants are not cheap and can run 11,000 dollars and that is what used to be in this hole until this morning a drunk driver came along crews say at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed several stories high into the air for three hours this morning. that is because witnesses say a drunk driver smashed into the fire hydrant. crews had a hard time turning it off pause the force of the water was so great. eventually workers parked their truck over the geyser and were able to get in there and shut it off. it happened around 2:00 this morning. by 5:00 they turned it off. police took the driver into custody. luckily no one was hurt and there was no flooding to nearby homes. public works crews did not have

to shut off water to neighbors but there was low water for three hours. the person responsible for the accident may be forced to pay a hefty water bill. out here live you can see the water is trickling down into the sewer and that saved the homes as the water gushed down into there, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> san jose police have released information on the car belonging to a double murder suspect. janine de la vega is live at a memorial for the victims with new information released by police overnight. >> reporter: claudine, police say the suspect may be driving a black nissan maxima and may be in route or already in southern california. now officers say he is responsible for gunning down this couple at their house here on north 7th street. this makeshift memorial, lots of people have left flowers and these candles have been burning all night. here is the car similar to the one police are looking for.

a black 2006 nissan maxima with a license plate number of 6-t-i- w-6-9-1. police believe the suspect pedro medina knows he is wanted and could be using aliases while trying to get to mexico, authorities say he shot and killed them early monday morning at their home. their three children were home during the shooting and are now being cared for by their aunt. >> if he is thinking he is going to dissolve into mexico or maybe try to return to the united states later on under a different identity he is dreaming because we are not going to forget this and catch up with him eventually. >> last night a vigil was held for the family. friends and community members remembered them and gathered donations for the children. police also attended the vigil and their union has set up a fund for the jimenez children, their ages range from 5 to 8.

8:30, an east bay truck owner may by the victim of two crimes in two days. the latest one happened around midnight. paul chambers live along the castro valley san leandro border. paul we are talking about a

truck fire that sounds suspicious. >> reporter: that's correct, dave. as you can see the truck is right here. two days in a row different things have happened to it. last night there was a fire. it melted the glass, steering wheel and seats and destroyed the cab. i will tell you a witness here says the police were the first one on the cerne scene but not able to put it out. >> people did that and for the a fire extinguisher but he could not get close there was so much smoke. >> the call came out before midnight and once firefighters were on scene they had some residents evacuate their homes. the truck sits in the driveway of the house so one man who lives inside was afraid the fire would spread to the house so he grabbed his dogs, alerted another roommate and headed to the door. >> this is the one thing i was scared about was the dogs out of the house and everybody got out okay thank god. nobody got hurt. >> coming back out here live you can see the truck sitting

on blocks. that is part of the reason the fire is considered suspicious. wednesday night someone stole all the tires. later today investigators are expected to come back out here and determine what caused the fire and possibly see if it was linked to wednesday night's vandalism, once again like i said it is considered suspicious and no one was injured, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police say a driver who hit a san francisco fire hydrant early this morning causing a major water main break may have been driving under the influence. this happened at 2:00 a.m. at castro and henry streets. look at these pictures. it took crews three hours just to turn that water off. police say the driver will be responsible for paying the cost of replacing that hydrant. two babies were rescued from a stolen car after a driver led police on a short chase. it started at 11:30 yesterday morning when police chased a

car reported stolen from berkeley. it crashed into another car near east 16th street and 55th avenue. two little kids, children were inside the stolen car. they were not hurt. the driver was arrested there at the scene. another person in the stolen car ran away but was captured later. police have not given us any additional information on a possible connection between the driver and the those small children. a police radio break down during president obama's visit may be the last straw for the city of oakland. the city is considering joining a new alameda county contra costa county communication network which is due to begin in september. now oakland spent 18 million dollars on that radio system last year. some officers say it breaks down about 500 times a month. a transmission tower wept off- line on monday, that prevented oakland police officers from communicating with each other, however police are saying that

president obama's security was never affected. >> a judge has ordered the university of colorado to seal its records about former student and accused movie theater shooter james holmes. the 24-year-old enrollinged at the school's medical campus in 2011 but dropped out later. he is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others during a showing of the dark knight rises last friday. the judge says providing the information would impede an ongoing investigation. holmes is due in court monday to be charged. response times of ambulances are called into question following the shooting. the denver post reports at least six nearby medical responders were not called there for more than 20 minutes and in some cases they were never called. the fire chief of aurora, colorado, says he is disappointed people are second guessing the exceptional work done by first responders. >> 8:34, police in campbell urging witnesses to come forward following a fatal accident involving a bicyclist. they say the 56-year-old man was riding down campbell avenue yesterday when he was hit by a

car. the 28-year-old driver stopped and is cooperating with police. alcohol and drugs don't appear to be a factor. a cyclist accused of fatally hitting a pedestrian is in court to set a hearing. he ran a red light and hit a person in a crosswalk in march. the victim died a few days later. prosecutors have charged him with felony vehicular manslaughter. >> there is a glimmer of hope in the disappearance of a uc davis student. investigators won't say why but at a press conference yesterday they did tell reporters they believe he is still alive. lomax was last seen leaving a counseling center where she was getting treatment following a break down. she is considered at risk because she needs medication. investigators are focusing on her facebook account, cell

phone and bank accounts. >> authorities there say they are seeing more drug smuggling above the coast. yesterday they confiscated pot near the harbor. since october more than 90 million worth of marijuana has found on boats, 4 times more than the year before. >> janitors and labor groups marching through san francisco today. it starts at noon in the financial districts. the janitors are protesting against cleaning contractors and the businesss that employ them. the sticking points include the cost of healthcare. the jean janitors have authorized them to call a strike if necessary. the contract runs out at the especially at the end of the month. they held another demonstration there. this time they picketed outside the grand hyatt at union

shasta all looking good. fog burning off, those are your temperatures there, when we meet again. >> new research showing a threat to the ice cap. british scientists found a rift createing a valley one mile beneath the surface, this is deeper than the grand canyon. they found it with ice penetrating radar. the problem is that valley brings in warmer ocean water and melting the ice cap. some of the glaciers in that area shrinking by 1 foot every year. authorities shot and killed a mountain lion after it smashed down a door there. the homeowner called 911 when she heard a big crash and commotion coming from in her house. she thought it was a burglar. deputies came out. they didn't find a suspect, instead they found a mountain lion hiding in a nearby tree.
