the glass and the car. as we go over here you can see where the fire hydrant used to be, that is where -- that hole shows where it was until a drunk driver came along. now at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed 50 feet into the air for three hours this morning. that is because witnesses say a drunk driver smashed into the fire hydrant and crewed had a hard time turning off the valve. eventually they parked their truck over it and able to get their wrenches in there and shut it off. it happened around 2:00 and they took the driver into custody. there was no water off but there was low pressure. the person will end up footing

the bill for a new one and a hefty water bill to pay as well. eventually this hydrant will be replaced. >> an arrest has been made in a 5 hour stand off comes to an end. last night a swat team surrounded a house there. the gunman was holding hostages. during the stand off several people walked out of the house. then just after 11:00 p.m. deputies stormed that house and they arrested the suspect. san francisco firefighters were called to the presidio during the night someone living nearby reported searing fire on a hillside. when they got there at 2:30 this morning they found bushes and trees on fire. they put it out in just about 15 minutes.

no one was hurt. a firefighter was taken to the hospital for possible exhaustion. all of this is still under investigation. >> well, time now is 7:03. san jose police have released new information in their search for the man suspected in a double homicide. janine de la vega is live at a memorial for the victims and information on the suspects car, janine. >> reporter: police want people to be on the lookout for a specific type of car they believe that the suspect was driving. there has been a huge outpouring of sympathy and support for the couple who lived at this home. you can see people left flowers and these candles burning all night. here is a picture of the car similar to the one police say castro medina is driving, a 2006 black max mam maxima with that license plate. they think he is headed there.

authorities say he gunned them down early monday morning at their home there. neighbors found their three children cry ing on the porch after the shooting. >> now all three have been orphaned, they will grow up without parents and the officers have started a victim assistance fund. >> a vigil for the parents was held last night. dozens of family and friends showed up to express their support. these children are being cared for by their aunt. as you heard police say the police officers union has set up a fund to help the children for clothes, food and for back to school supplies. if you would like to help you cap go to our website at ktvu.com and click on web links. janine de de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police searching through video trying to find four men accuse accused of a robbery

and shooting in a mall. they were inside the mall about 12:15 yesterday when police say the men stormed in with semi automatic weapons and crowbars. the men demanded the owner open up the safe and threatened to shoot her. she says one of the men fired a shot to break open in a display glass. one shopper we talked to says it has made her more cautious. >> i will probably think twice, probably look around, probably be a little bit more aware of my surroundings now especially if i have my grandkids or daughter with them. >> they say security was able to follow them for a short time after they jumped into two get away cars. one a mercedes, the other a black lexus, last seen heading north on 880. >> the san francisco fire department is sending out a warning to make sure you don't become the victim of a scam. the department says someone has

been calling homes and businesses using their name to ask for money or personal items. the department says it never solicits. if you think you have been a victim call the fire department. the board of oakland is losing business to canada. at 7:15 the financial incentive luring shipping companies to dock north of the border. >> time now 7:06. the city of oakland sending a message to clean up and move out. the message is sent to squatters taking over vacant properties. the city tells us they have issued a 30 day nuisance notice to the bank that owns a 4 unit building at 2825 valla sido place. the city wants it cleaned up and the people living there moved out. however those who are living there say they have cleaned up and they don't have to pay rent. we are going to keep following this story. we will see where it leads to, what develops. >> all right, 7:07. let's head to sal castaneda for

the financial incentive drawing shipping companies north, scott. >> reporter: yeah, this threatens to squeeze local long shoremen and local port area businesses. the u.s. transportation department saying this morning canada is providing, overall shipment savings over ports in the bay area. in part because of a controversial $109 per container tax the u.s. levees. one congressman calls that tax an invisible blockade. >> in canada they don't have a similar tax and that puts us at a competitive disadvantage. >> congressional leaders say u.s. businesses are hurting but so too is the treasury because more ships are going to canada versus the bay area, the u.s. losing tax revenue, two billion dollars over the next 10 years. live in washington, scott mcfarlane, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:16, president obama may be trying to steal some of the limelight from mitt romney.

caldron. >> there is video of the first lady there at the let's move, event. she ties that in there. they did that there. she kept up with all of them and had sports figures with her as well. >> an analysis has discovered millions sitting in special funds at state agencies one week after a hidden fund scandal at the state parks department. some examples cited by the newspaper, an account that helps build state courts had 27 million dollars more than reported. a fund that helps problem gamblers had 7.9 million more than reported. another fund that assisted in prison guard training had 6.4 million more. they had others and they are going through them line by line

to investigate it. many people who donated money to save our parks are saying they want a refund. that stems from a financial scandal involving 54 million hidden by two state parks as they were facing foreclosure because of a lack of money. they are being asked to make sure it goes to the parks. meantime two more employees have decided to step down. >> you drivers will soon be able to feed the meter without getting out of your car. in a few weeks an app will be available to allow drivers to pay to park at a meter with their smart phones. >> as more and more smart phone users out there more interest in bringing them into the 21st century. >> the city plans to test the program on locust street then all downtown meters with that app within six months. city leaders in sebastopol

authorities killed a mountain lion after it knocked down the door of this home. the homeowner called 911 after she heard a loud crash and commotion, she thought she was reporting a burglary, deputies arrived and didn't find the suspect they thought they were looking for, instead that guy, the mountain lion hiding in a tree, authorities shot it saying it posed public safety hazard. >> interesting. three true flies were found in santa clara and they are moving fast to get rid of them. the will put out traps to kill them. 50 traps will be set up every mile for 16 miles, fruit flies attack 230 different kinds of fruit and vegetable crops, it is native to southern asia and if you don't eradicate it quickly it threatens a million

7:28. an overnight fire in the east bay raises fears of arson. a parked truck may have been torched. ktvu's paul chambers is near the castro valley san leandro border where that burned up truck is still in the driveway. right? >> reporter: yes, that is true, i will show you in a second, it has surrounded by criminal activity, take a look, it is

charred up, not too bad but i wanted you to see no stairwell, that is gone, and that is why police and firefighters believe this may be a suspicious fire. >> i saw the flames out the window and saw my roommates truck was on fire so i call 911 and i let my other roommate know to get out of the house because i was afraid it was going to explode. >> ryan hall goes on to say the proximity of the truck to his home is why he thought it would explode. it is in the driveway. he said it grew within seconds. he was scared but calm. grabbed the dogs and alerted a roommate. they made it out safety but this is not the first time they had issued surrounding this track. 24 hours before someone vandalized it. >> someone -- you know somebody came and took off the tires at the truck and he wasn't home. >> once again no one was hurt

and it is being looked at as sus suspicious. you can see the truck on cinderblocks because someone stole the tires and you can see that, and also the proximity of the truck to the house they are lucky it didn't spread further and they are expected to be out here today and decide and make a decision as to what caused the fire and see if it night be linked to the prior crime. >> two peabs babies rescued after the driver led them on a chase. it started after that. the car crashed into another car there. two mall children were inside that stolen car. they were not hurt. the driver was arrested there. another person inside the stolen car ran away but was captured. police have not released information on the connection between the driver and the

children. a police radio breakdown during the president's visit may be the last straw for oakland, they are thinking about joinic that. oakland spent 18 million on its radio system last year but officers say it fails 500 times a month. a transmission tower wept off- line monday preventing them from communicating with each other, however they say the president's security was never affected. >> 7:31, a judge has ordered the university of colorado to seal its records about the former student and accused movie theater shooter james holmes. he enrolled at the medical campus in june 2011 but dropped out a year later. now he is accused of killing 12 and injurying 58 others during the batman movie last friday. the judge says giving out that information would hinder an ongoing investigation. holmes is due back in court monday to be formerly charged.

response times of ambulances are being questioned after last week's movie theater shooting. the denver post reports at least six nearby medical responders were not called to the scene for more than 20 minutes. in some cases they were never called. aurora's fire chief says he is disappointed that people are second guessing what he calls the exceptional work performed by first responders. >> police in camel are urging witnesses to step forward following that. he was hit by a car. the driver stopped and is cooperating. alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. that person is due back in court, they say she ran a red light and hit a victim in a crosswalk. the victim died later. prosecutors have charged her

with felony vehicular manslaughter. >> our time is 7:33. there is a glimmer of hope about the disappearance of a 19- year-old uc davis student. el dorado county investigators have not said why but in a news couches yesterday they told reporters they believe linea lomax is still alive. last seen leaving a counseling center where she was getting treatment following a stress related break down. she is considered at risk because she needs medication. investigators are focusing on her facebook account, her cell phone and on bank accounts. authorities in southern california say they are seeing more drug smuggling off the california coast. yesterday the coast guard confiscated 8500 pounds of marijuana near los angeles harbor, since october of last year more than 90 million dollars worth of marijuana has been found on boats, 4 times more than the year before. >> janitors and labor groups

will march through san francisco today. it began at noon at 101 california street in the city's financial district. they are demonstrating against cleaning and contractors and businesses that employ them, sticking points include the cost of healthcare. they have authorized them to call a strike if necessary. it expires at the end of the month. they held another demonstration at a san francisco hotel there. this time they picketed outside the grand hyatt at union square. they have been working without a contract for three years. they were joined by members of the nfl players association and lgbt groups. >> 7:35. we told you the giants are playing tonight. you may want to avoid san francisco around rush hour tonight. critical mass organizers say their monthly ride will start tonight 5:30, justin herman plaza near market streets, and

celebrate the olympic moment? that is something we only find out once the games actually begin. >> mitt romney later said that everything he has seen in london indicates the games will be highly successful. >> the biggest energy company based in the bay area reported its profits dropped 7% during the last quarter, chevron reported earning 7.2 billion dollars. they said that is to blame. the news follows exxon mobiles reports its profits hit a record 15.9 billion dollars. investors are reacting to facebook's earning reports by selling off stock. they reported for the first time yesterday and did meet analysts expectations. but the stock did open down 3% this morning and right now it is down by 14%, selling at 23 dollars, a little bit over. facebook stock if you remember sold for 38 dollars a share when it had its initial public

offering last may. well, this morning south korea samsung reports a record profit of 5.9 billion dollars for the quarter, sales of the phone helped boost their lead over apple and that trend is expected to continue as many fans put off buying new phones until the next one comes out which is possibly october. samsung reports its flat screen division made a profit as lcd prices stabilized. >> 7:46. the latest report from the commerce department is raising new concerns the american economy could be stalling. the government reports the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5%, actually down from 2% for the first three months of this year. that is not enough to lower the unemployment rate. consumer spending slowed as the american people bought fewer computers, cars and other long- term products. the personal savings rate went up by 4%. well michelin is recalling 841,000 tires because the tread

you can tell us now what caused us and some charges that may be filed against the driver, tara. fire hydrants are not cheap and can run 11,000 dollars and that is what used to be in this hole until this morning a drunk driver came along crews say at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed several stories high into the air for three hours this morning. that is because witnesses say a drunk driver smashed into the fire hydrant. crews had a hard time turning it off pause the force of the water was so great. eventually workers parked their truck over the geyser and were able to get in there and shut it off. it happened around 2:00 this morning. by 5:00 they turned it off. police took the driver into custody. luckily no one was hurt and there was no flooding to nearby homes. public works crews did not have

car reported stolen from berkeley. it crashed into another car near east 16th street and 55th avenue. two little kids, children were inside the stolen car. they were not hurt. the driver was arrested there at the scene. another person in the stolen car ran away but was captured later. police have not given us any additional information on a possible connection between the driver and the those small children. a police radio break down during president obama's visit may be the last straw for the city of oakland. the city is considering joining a new alameda county contra costa county communication network which is due to begin in september. now oakland spent 18 million dollars on that radio system last year. some officers say it breaks down about 500 times a month. a transmission tower wept off- line on monday, that prevented oakland police officers from communicating with each other, however police are saying that
