a fly no bigger than my fingernail and 16 miles. how san francisco is battling the fruit fly infestation. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. we begin font with breaking news in the east bay. and 8-year-old girl along with a 22-year-old man are being treated for gunshot wounds after a shooting at a home in bay point. our reporter has just arrived and has more detail. >> reporter: in the last 45 minutes or so, a family member of the 8ed with came right out from the corner to meet to us tell us that the little girl appears to have been shot in the knee but at this point, they don't know what happened. the family says she was rush here to john muir. the contra costa county

sheriff's office confirm the girl and the 22-year-old man were both hit by bullets when an unknown man started shooting just outside a home in bay point around 3:00 this afternoon. the little girl did not want to be identified but said she and others are demanding answers. >> i don't know. it's just sad right now. i can't eel tell you. it's sad. >> it's so -- there's so much shooting going on. it's like they don't have no heart. they don't even stop when they see the kids. when is it gonna stop? >> reporter: and i also talked to investigators they tell me the little girl was due to get x-rays and say she is certainly shaken by what has happened. but other we they say she's okay. authorities can't tell us if

this girl and others were targets or not. we're still checking with family members and investigators and we'll bring you more tonight at 10:00. back to you. we have new information tonight on the death of a woman who fell from a party bus on highway 17. she has been paided as 25-year- old natasha nolan of santa cruz. a 20-year-old woman who also fell from the bus is hospitalized. that accident happened north of highway 9 in los gatos just before midnight. allie rasmus tell us what led up to the accident and why witnesses did not give investigators critical information. >> reporter: it began as a fun night out, a party bus full of people. just before midnight a fight broke out on board, while the bus drove down highway 17. >> how the door opened to the bus and the two people -- somehow the door opened to the bus and the two people fell out. >> reporter: while the bus was

moving? >> yes, at approximately 45, 50 miles an hour. >> reporter: investigators want to know how the bus doors came open. >> there are two ways to open, manually or an emergency lever near the door. >> reporter: the bus driver was sober but the 12 to 15 punishes on board were drunk -- punishes on board were drunk passengers were drunk. >> alcohol was a factor. there was not a lot of cooperation with law enforcement. >> this kind of raises the problem to a new level. >> reporter: next month the state senate is expected to vote on legislation requiring party bus operators to vore fi the ages of their passengers. on this particular bus, chp investigators say the woman in the hospital is just 20. but they are not sure how many others are under the legal drinking age. >> they could have gone up and impaired the driver's ability to drive safely. that would have made the situation worse.

were hospitalized. there is no word yet on the extend their -- extent of their injuries. a herd of cattle was found roaming an area between crockett and martinez. the cows got loose at the onramp. drivers slowed down to get a look at the site. the cows were eventually herded back to their nearby patch chur, where a witness on the -- pasture where a witness said there was a cut to allow them out. investigators say 41-year- old rafael cortez garcia was shot just before 7:30 yesterday evening. the auto mechanic died on his doorstep at 13th avenue near east 31st street just a couple of blocks away from highland hospital. police say someone with a weapon was seen running away from the area. the motive is not known. just a fau hours later,

more gunfire sent two people to the hospital in east oakland. a double shooting happened just after midnight at 90th avenue. it's believed the victims are related. both are listed in stable condition tonight. we have new developments to report tonight where a large homeless encampment was found -- was recently removed, rather. a small fire broke out just before 10:30 this moving near coyote creek. city and county crews cleaned up the park a week and a half ago -- ago, and they told people to live. some neighbors say they want more police patrol. >> we're less than two weeks after the cleanup and this morning we have our fourth grass fire in in the last 12 hours. we're at a loss. we need protection from the

city. >> as we reported on tuesday, some of the homeless have relocated to another area just about a half a mile away near keys street. an 8-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a san jose pool earlier this week has been released from the hospital. the family friend gave us the news just this afternoon. the boy was playing in the pool at the housing complex on monday when somebody noticed that the little boy was not moving. firefighters say a woman who immediately gave the boy cpr saved his life. some farmers in the south bay went on offense trying to defeat a pest that threatens their crops. noelle walker is here with more on knocking out the oriental fruit fly. >> reporter: pests got here from most likely someone bringing in fruit from the mail or suitcases. contra costa county is trying to get rid of the flies before any dry out the losts --

profits. >> there are no flies here. >> reporter: he's putting insecticide on his fruit trees trying to turn -- >> we have to treat in order to save the crops. >> reporter: andy's orchards is in morgan hill being treated for the oriental fruit fly investigation. agricultural inspectors found this on tuesday and today is the two months of targeted treatments to keep the pests at bay. >> as long as we get an early start on it, we're very likely to get control quickly. >> reporter: the spray is a gelatin that sticks to trees, to attract i fly and then kill it. >> and then there's no males to meet with the -- to mate with the females and then we have a population collapse. >> most of my fruit is coming off here. so if there is a quarantine, i won't be able to move this

normally. >> reporter: that would be a potential $40,000 hit. a quarantine would close the market. >> they have varieties here that you can't find most other places. >> reporter: agricultural in santa clara county is a $250 million business and no one wants to see those big bucks wiped out by a pest. now the targeted treatments will happen every few weeks for the next two months. any are safe for humans but not for the fly. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. more than 100 volunteers turned out today in the search for a missing pacifica woman. 76-year-old marina janssen is known as marla. her husband reported her missing after last seeing her in the back yard of their home. she's sea known an -- she's known as an avid hiker. it's not clear where she went.
