"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. the 49er stadium project is moving one step closer to reality. in a few hours, the first beams are expected to arrive for the sports facility. allie rasmus is live there in santa clara with more on the project that will soon be taking shape. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. the work is well underway. it was just after 6:30 when we saw these massive cranes begin to hoist these steel beams. they started one beam at a time.

but now, just in the last half- hour, they've got several beams in place and some horizontal beams spanning across it. this is a six-month project putting this framework, assembling it together. it will take about six months. today is day one of the process. and here to talk more about it is santa clara's mayor. what are people gonna start to see? >> the size and the scope and the scope of this new iconic building in silicon valley. what's really exciting, not only do we have one site with a crane, we have four on one site. that's very exciting to get one. now we have four. all of the steel was american steel. five states were involved. so the american economics involved are american jobs.

>> reporter: what does this mean for the city of santa clara? people are gonna start to see this take ship? >> yes, and they are gonna be so excited about it. this is gonna an lead certified building and that means it will reflect both the values and the silicon valley being sustainable. it will be excite and we have -- exciting and we only have 32 nfl stadiums and santa clara will have one of them. santa clara will benefit from all of the jocks. the 36% unemployment, now all of those people are gonna be able to take care of their families. >> thank you. this is a $1.1 billion-dollar construction project and it's said to be completed before the 2014 season. back to you. >> thank you. a popular new ride at six flags is closed until further notice. alex savidge tells us the ride

was shut down after riders got stuck at the top of the roller coaster for more than 90 minutes. >> reporter: and it must have been a very scary moment. a parks person told me they ruled out a mechanical issue. a short time from now, we'll be getting into a bucket that will be attached to this crane and hoisted up to the top of the superman ride to take a look at the -- closer look at the ride to figure out what caused this ride to stall out 150 feet up in the air. yesterday, firefighters were called mere 0 -- were called here about 3:00 in the afternoon. a dozen people were stuck right side up on the new ride. >> after another nan an hour and a half, mechanics -- after

an -- after more than an hour and a half, people were taken down. >> it's better that they weren't upside down. ed broad to be rushing through their head. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the park says they could get free passes to the park. we're told that the rides are inspected every day before the park opens. that includes this ride. but for now, this ride will remain closed. the workers will be getting up into a bucket on this crane we understand a short time from now, to do their inspection try to pinpoint the problem.

alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. an amber alert is in effect for a monterey county teenager. one suspect in her disappearance has been arrested. investigators say this 16-year- old was abducted by her 19-year- old boyfriend and his father. the men are interested persons of interest in the shooting death found at their home. the father is in custody. but authorities are still searching for their son and girl. contra costa county sheriff's department says two victims were inside a home on franklin home on saturday when a car stopped out front and a man got out and fired one or two rounds. the victims were taken to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. witnesses say the suspect drove away in a black honda sedan. 7:06. starting today, part of a street near san francisco's very busy union square will be

right now, it's 7:08. we want to go back to sal for a complete look at traffic this morning. >> all right. pam and dave. >> traffic is improving a little bit. and then it is slowing down here at the peak of the morning commute. it's about a 20-minute delay. we had a couple of stalled vehicles on the span. they got rid of them rather quickly. you will see slow traffic in the area. also, so -- obvious live the san mateo bridge could be an alternate for you. today i would say it's anock alternate. if you are driving on the nimitz freeway, doing well, heading south. the road sensor is a little bit more wear and tear from 80 to fremont and then 101, slow, capital expressway, 280 and then let's go to steve. >> well, we have some fog out there. it will burn off sooner.

it's not as deep as it was over the weekend. it's coming down to about 1,000 feet. it will burn off. fog, sun. there will still be some sun on the coast. there's plenty out there. but inland temperatures will warm up. it's been this way the entire summer. the high hind of -- kind of builds back. temperatures out to the coast. solano, contra costa county, they jump out the most. it's been 15, 12, now 13. so it's kind of holding in there. anything less than 10. 50s to near 60 degrees. the lows have been cool. no doubt about it. a lot of tropical moisture, very, very close. the high continues to coast. high pressure is kind of nosing back to the west. but again, that just squashes the fog. there's no northeast wind or anything. so the fog is still there. inland temperatures will warm

a new request from conrad murray that could prove he's innocent in michael jackson's death. , now, murray wants a key piece of evidence tested. a motion was filed to look at the residue in a bought of propofol. his lawyers say it could prove that jackson injected himself with the drug that killed him. murray is incarcerated. the japanese factory that will make the cars for the rail line between marin and sonoma county opened earlier this month in illinois.

used to work here. friends say the 25-year-old, natasha nolan, they are shocked over her death. she and a 20-year-old woman somehow fell through a bus door while the bus was going 45 miles an hour. nolan was run over and kill. >> alcohol was a huge factor. there was a lot of alcohol on board. right now, there's 12, 15 passengers. the reason we know -- don't know exactly how many, some of them fled on foot. a lot of them were extremely intoxicated. so there was not enough cooperation with law enforcement. >> reporter: the accident comes as a bill seeks to clamp down on party buses to work its way through the legislature. now, so far, no charges have

been filed against the bus company or its bus driver and no word if criminal charges will be filed again the woman in the fight. we will speak to the d.a. today and we'll pass that information to you. the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is expected to enter a plea tomorrow. he's being held without bail. sierra lamar disappeared on march 15th. he was linked to the case from dna left on clothing in lamar's purse. sierra's family will not be at tomorrow's hearing but they will be at cut tomorrow morning. lamar's sister wishes that he would just tell the truth about her disappearance. >> i would like him to tell us

in less than an hour, the man accused in the deadly shooting in aurora, colorado is due in court. renee marsh has more about what we could learn today. >> reporter: good morning, pam. you know, as we speak right now, the suspected shooter is sitting in solitary confinement in his jail cell but very soon, i'm sure he will be escorted through that underground tunnel just as the last time he was when he was in court and he will show up in court there. we won't have those light fixtures that we will the last time, with the man with the red hair. the judge ruled no cameras in the courtroom. so we'll rely fully on a sketch artist. what will happen in court today? that's the big question. well, he will be formally

charged. according to court documents this is what we know -- at the very least, the prosecution will file 12 first-degree murder counts against him. they will night several counts of first-degree murder against james holes. s and there will be -- james holeles. and there will be other charges -- holmes. and there will be other charges. how will the defense move forward? will they be going with this death penalty? here in colorado, this case is eligible for the death penalty because he's facing first- degree murder. but the simple answer is we don't know yet if the prosecution will indeed go with the death penalty. it is a high possibility but they are just saying they are going to take the input from

victims, victims' families and then weigh it all. one other issue that will come in court today is the fact that james holmes was seeing a psychiatrist, we know that. apparently he said some sort of package -- sent so many sort of a -- sent some sort of package to the psychiatrist. the prosecutor wants that to be evidence. but his attorney does not. so that's something that the judge will have to decide as well. pam? >> before you go, do we know what was in the package sent to the psychiatrist and the relationship and how important it could be in the case? >> reporter: there's speculation about what was in that package. we have not independently confirmed that information ourselves. the speculation is that it -- it basically outlines what he eventually would go ahead and do at that movie theater on that friday. that is what some reports are saying but again, we have not

the bay area is bucking the national trend of gas prices going up. the average national price for a gallon of regular, $3.49 today. that's up 2 cents from last week. up 14 cents from a month ago. the local prices are still pretty much where any were a month ago. in oakland, gas prices are down 2 cents during the last week. while in san francisco, they are pretty steady. in san jose and santa rosa, prices have held relatively steady for the past month. drivers in berkeley may have to avoid ashby avenue the next few weeks. they are doing repaving work between hillard and san pablo avenue from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 in the afternoon.

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'll pam cook. >> i'm dave clark. >> i'm in for tori campbell today. it's monday, july 30th. well, the work has officially started now. the new 49er stadium. just about an hour ago, the first steel column was put into place. allie rasmus is out there in santa clara now with a book at what's gonna become the framework for this whole project. >> it was just after 6:30 this morning when we saw these giant cranes when you see on the site hoisting up the first column that will be put in place. they've made a lot of progress since 6:30. you can see dozens of columns are already upright and in place. and they've connected those with more ston tal beams.
