routine at the church, members pray outside where stone statues are but today flowers take up the empty space after the statue was stolen from the church and its followers. >> mainly they are sad and maybe angry because people want to know why. >> reporter: police say it was stolen thursday night or friday morning. the search faces the police department. it was a brazen crime, the statue was bolted down and there is evidence they tried to take another statue as well. >> the church wouldn't expect someone to steal, especially being across the street from the police department. >> reporter: it was bought for $7,000 when the church opened in 1995 from a shop in italy. >> the emotional and sentimental value is worth more

other homes. there are no mandatory evacuation orders in place. the fire is 20% contained. both on both sides of the chick-fil-a same-sex marriage debate are taking a stand. we flew over the chick-fil-a set to open next month in san jose where same-sex marriage supporters gathered. it was organized after mike huckaby declared today chick- fil-a appreciation day. he called on supporters to go to the restaurant. ktvu's ann rubin is live in fairfield where the restaurant has to close early. >> reporter: chick-fil-a normally would have stayed open till 10:00 tonight, but instead they closed their doors a few minutes ago, with all the demand they are running out of supplies. they served 1500 people with the lines running a hour and a half but customers say it was worth the wait to show their

down the drain. >> reporter: she started the audit a year ago when problems surfaced about faulty police radios. she found 4-12 system the department paid for were never used. one more under used. >> reporter: the under used was the so-called shot spotter system, the deal had one person monitoring shots so they paid more to upgrade the system and now each police car has its own monitor. these cameras they wear on their chest started with a $1.2 million system with cameras on police car, now scratched. >> the system was broken. that opd has been mismanaging technology. >> reporter: the department learned from the audit and already started making changes.

today in honor of a fallen national guardsman. he died last friday in afghanistan. he was a medic who joined the national guard in 2006. he is survived by his father and two brothers. bay area researchers say there is a reason to get more sleep. new tonight, ktvu's john fowler joins us with the link found in a first of its kind study. >> reporter: never before been shown outside the laboratory, losing sleep weakens the effect of vaccines. >> reporter: people know about too little sleep. >> when i don't have sleep i kind of -- >> reporter: what keeps you awake? >> work. thinking about politics. >> reporter: lack of sleep disrupts your immune system. >> doesn't surprise me at all. i feel like i am coming down with a could right now.

explosion at a underground pg&e vault. witnesses say flames shot into the air from a man hole on webster street. it happened an hour ago around 5:00 p.m. tonight. there are no reports of injury. and more developing news in san francisco, two children needed medical attention during a water rescue at ocean beach. one child was transported to the hospital and a second child was given oxygen at the scene. three ambulances responded to the scene. we are working on more information about what is going on. the fbi joined san francisco police investigating what a homeless man was doing with a cash of weapons. police displayed guns, rifles and knives they confiscated from his car. he was living in his jeep when he was arrested july 21.

we would normally keep them. the children go about the violence but the counselors fear the children accept it. >> it is our role to make sure kids understand this is not okay. >> reporter: the most recent shootings were in this neighborhood not far from visitacion valley. two members of the same family were shot. police say they are still looking into whether the shooting was related to gang violence. he says the shootings are happening within the gangs. >> they are not guys that can't talk to each other. couple weeks ago they were friends, within the same gang, if you will, and now all of a sudden four of them have been killed since saturday. >> reporter: police stepped up patrol but those involved in the violence need to bring an tend to the bloodshed. >> we will try to save them
