downtown oakland. at 4:29 let's go backed to desk. topping our news this morning bart is trying something new today. they are allowing bikes on the trains during commute hours. ktvu alex savidge joins us now. walnut creek it looks like you are on bart. >> reporter: bart doing an experiment if you will. they are temporarily lifting their rush hour ban on bikes. usually in the morning and afternoon you can't bring your bike on any of the bart trains. this morning they will do a test that will play out today and for the next five fridays. normally the bikes are not allowed on the train between 5:00 in the morning and 9:00 in the morning. bart is trying to see if they can relax those rules in the future with the goal to increase the number of bicyclist that use bart. bart estimates 4% of riders bike to stations and hope to boost that to 8% over the next

decade. the san francisco bike coalition has been pushing for this. >> bart understands the growing number of people biking throughout the bay area making sure they can move from county to county region to region is really a whole new customer base for bart. >> reporter: even during the pilot program bikes will still be banned from the first car of every bart train and still be banned from escalators. bart will survey riders for feedback. they will also analyze delays. of course the results of this experiment will be presented later this year to bart board of directors. they will decide whether or not to lift this ban lift these bike blackouts during rush hour period. we are live this morning in walnut creek alex savidge ktvu

channel 2 news. we have new video this morning of a high speed chase through the east bay. the pursuit began a few hours ago in pittsburg to richmond and ended up on willow pass road in concord. the chp was going after a stolen car. speeds topped 100 miles an hour. during the pursuit the car blew its tires and was traveling on its rims. the car eventually came to a stop. oakland police is renewing a call for a curfew. keeping young people off the streets late at night would help stop the increase in homicide and violent crimes. chief jordan says he is still working out the details but hoping to have the city council pass on ordnance before the end of this year. last year the council failed to approve an ordnance by anthony

bats. the incident started when officers tried to pull overlush hernandez on a traffic violation on story road yesterday afternoon. police say she hit one of the officers with her car to try to avoid arrest and then drove off. officers chased her but she rammed into another police car injuring another officer. eventually hernandez surrendered. one of the injured officers remains in the hospital. the other has been released. the newspaper business is very competitive on the streets of san jose. now several small publications they are the victims of theft by the biggest publisher in town the san jose mercury news. 20 news racks were found in a dumpster at the papers headquarters. >> we caught them with a few. we want to find out how many more they took. why they took them. >> the mercury news has issued

a statement removing newspaper racks is a long standing practice. the paper strongly denies stealing any other organizations news racks. a brush fire that destroyed three cars and two story sheds is being called suspicious. it starletted at 6:00 last night. firefighters gained control in about 30 minutes and kept the flames from spreading to nearby apartments. witnesses say they saw several kids running from the area where the fire started. new developments surrounding the investigation in the serial killer case in san joaquin county. investigators are trying to identify remains of a female teenager and a baby found in a well. a forensic anthropologist say the remains fit property file of a female 16-18 years old with mixed ancestry.

the skeletal remains were dug up in lyndon several months ago. in letters shermantine admits that a pregnant black woman was buried in that well. time now is 4:34. a pedestrian is in the hospital with serious injuries this morning after being hit by an elderly driver at the san leandro bart station. the 80-year-old driver plowed through a hedge and across a bus zone and then hit a 63-year- old man. the driver also crashed head on into another car. this all happened last night at about 5:45. the elderly driver was taken toes hospital with nonlife threatening injuries and no one else was hurt. the san mateo union high school district is denying allegations it discriminated against chinese students. the u.s. department of education is investigating the district after a complaint

filed by a private tutor an behalf of two chinese students. they claim the district is moving them from mills high school in millbrae to cappuccino high school to increase test scores. the seal that ended up thousands of miles away from its home. coming up what the marine mammal center in sausalito is hoping to bring that little girl to good health. gay right supporters are planning a kiss in at chic-fil- a restaurants across the country. gay rights advocates are upset about comments made by chic-fil- a's president that says he supports the biblical definition of family but the fast food chain received a big boost on wednesday. the company reported record sales after people lined up for an appreciation day.

[ laughter ] makes me laugh at 4:30 in the morning. we do have cooler day today. what? yeah i know. yesterday coast and bay didn't change at all. but inland temps went up. sometimes the forecast models they do exactly like they say. you just have to buy into it. fog bank though has won. it's moving locally inland. there is a howling sea breeze. west, southwest. yesterday at this time 13 miles an hour. trust me. that is a screaming message it will be 5-10 degrees cooler.

santa rosa 62. couple little lows coming in about three or four of them. this system digging to the north. drawing up another one to the south. we had hot temperatures yesterday inland. it was cool by the coast. guess what, that fog is really ramped up today. there is more fog and the cooling has begun. 50s and 60s by the beaches. 70s and 80s now. a few low 90s. fog, sun cooler. local drizzle. windy at times. especially sfo and out to the golden gate. 80s now. i did hold on to 93 in antioch. everybody is sliding into the 80s or 90s. it will be cooler even more so on saturday. level off on sunday. meat prices are likely to change quite a bit in the next six months. the drought is driving up the price of feed for beef and pork farmers. now they are selling off some

of their herds because they can't afford to keep them. that will mean a glut of meat in the market initially that should drive down prices. analysts say that will also mean a meat shortage by february forcing prices back up above the current levels. in just about an hour the labor department will release the monthly job report for july. it probably only inched up last month. they believe the u.s. created about 100,000 jobs during july. that is twice as many as june. the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 8.2%. we will bring that report into you as soon as it comes in. (both president obama -- both president obama and mitt romney will react to the jobs number in their appearance today. the president is expected to deliver remarks at 8:45 this morning. urging congress to extend cuts to middle class americans.

police believe the gun is the same recovered from a home. police also found thousands of pounds of ammunition and drugs including cocaine and ecstasy. two mens were arrested. police say the boy is with his mother. the united nations general assembly is expected to pass a resolution today. they have seen the government of syria for attacks on its own people. china and russia have veto power today's resolution is expected to pass. three suspected al qaeda terrorists are locked up in spain this morning. they have stocked piled enough explosives to blow up a bus. there is also evidence they experimented with ultra light planes and aircraft. while they may not discuss possible targets they indicate the suspects could have been plotting to attack the u.s. or england. members of congress are now on a five-week break. i will show you video. those are lawmakers heading out

drive toward the bay bridge toll plaza. also this morning here at the toll plaza it is light and it is a nice drive once you make it on the bridge into san francisco. all the way in. and no problems on the lower deck between san francisco and oakland. san jose south bay. northbound 280, 85, 87. that traffic looking nice. if you are driving off to the south because, you should off -- south bay, you should be off to a decent start. a lot more in the way of clouds and fog. temperatures should come down inland. they were still warm yesterday. tail santa rosa. fairfield 96. livermore 98. over by reid it was 90. there was a six degree spread between san jose airport and reed hill. 88 in san jose. west, southwest 22 gust to 31. that is a big-time sea breeze.

the marine animal center to be treated. it's the first time on record a northern first seal made it all the way to hawaii. they normally live in california or off the coast of alaska. san francisco police are looking for a person of interest in connection with the brutal killing of a gay man. here's a sketch of the man police are looking for. he is described as white or hispanic 5'10" between 25-30 years old. he was last seen leaving a car on castro street with the victim 20-year-old ericest coo listen on june 12th. his body was found bound, gagged in his diamond heights apartment. former child psychologist accused of molesting patients will be back in court this morning. a judge has determined that 80- year-old william airs is competent to stand trial again. he was committed to napa state hospital due to the beginnings

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. contracting company is promising tougher safety measures following a big scare in the same san bruno neighborhood where a pipeline exploded two years ago. workers from shaw pipeline ruptured a gas line with a backhoe yesterday. 14 homes had to briefly evacuate while the gas was shut off. the leak did not spark a fire but people living there tell us it was a grim reminder of the 2010 explosion that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. hundreds of firefighters from across northern california are now struggling to contain a huge wild fire in plymouth county. the fire has burned more than four square miles near the town

of be lden which is 120 miles north of sacramento. at last check it's only 5% contained. investigators are trying to figure out whether a blown tire may have caused a deadly tour bus crash in southern illinois. it slammed into a pillar of an overpass yesterday afternoon. one witness says that passengers were thrown around. there was blood every where. a 235-year-old woman -- a 25- year-old woman died and 38 people were taken to the hospital. the bus was enroute to st. louis from chicago. a story only on 2. a ktvu special report has uncovered more cal tran problems. we first told you about faulty road sensors. now we have learned nearly 60% of the 353 live traffic cameras in the bay area don't work. cal tran spent almost $5.5 million on the cameras last fiscal year. >> do you have anything to say to the public.

good morning. it happened just an hour ago. a high speed chase across the east bay caught on tape. >> crime continues to thrive in oakland and the debate over a curfew once again under way. what the police chief is saying. well for some it has been a cool pattern by the coast. for others it has been hot inland. there is a sign of much cooler weather.
