welcome to a brand new day it's friday, august 3rd i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. i wonder what it will be like for the weekend. steve knows. >> it will be cooler. some areas are like what are you talking about it has been 60s all week long. not by the coast. there is too much fog. it's on the increase. 60s and 70s around the bay. inland temps have been very hot in the 90s. it will still be the same. this traffic looks pretty good. it's a little unusual for it to look this nice. also the commute looks pretty good on 80 westbound. plenty of room for you on the way to the bay bridge. let's go back today and pam. -- let's go back to dave and pam. in overnight news there was a high speed chase across the bay area. the pursuit began in pittsburg

then to richmond and on to the bay bridge. you can see sparks flying from the suspects car. that is because the tires blew and the car was traveling on its rims. speeds reached 100 miles an hour. the pursuit finally ended when the vehicle came to a stop on willow pass road in concord and the suspect was arrested. time now 6:01. two injured south bay police officers are now back home this morning. after they were rammed in a hit and run. ktvu janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us this suspect just did not want to get caught. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. that is right this woman did not want to give up trying to get away from police. she was relentsless. officers say she used her car as a weapon and the chase ended here. police say yesterday evening at around 5:30 they tried to stop 42-year-old lisa hernandez for a routine traffic stop.

when they approached hernandez she accelerated and struck one of those officers. other officers in the area spotted hernandez car an chased her for a couple miles. they were able to box her in with their patrol cars. but officers say she started ramming into their patrol cars and that is when a second officer was injured. hernandez was finally taken into custody and arrested on four counts of an assault with a deadly weapon, felony dui and evading police. we have also learned she is on parole. as far as the police officers injuries one suffered bruises inebriations on her knee. both were taken to the hospital but released late last night. reporting live janine de la vega. is a pedestrian is in the hospital with very serious injuries after being hit by an elderly driver at the san leandro bart station. the 80-year-old driver plowed through a hedge then ran across a bus zone and then hit a 63-

year-old man. the driver also crashed head on into another car. all this happened last night at 5:45. the elderly driver was treated at the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. no one else was hurt. today is a first day of a new pilot program on bart. alex savidge has been riding around on bart trains this morning where bikes are now allowed during rush hour traffic. have you seen more bikes this morning? >> reporter: yeah we are as the morning wears on here. more and more people showing up at bart stations here. normally you are not allowed to bring the bikes on to the trains during the busy commute hours. a lot of people they will bike to a bart station and leave their bike locked up. but today is a different story. you will be allowed to bring your bike downen to the trains. throughout the day today. it is a temporarily -- they are temporarily lifting the ban on bikes all day today. it's a test to see how it will

play out. it will happen today and for the next four fridays. bart is trying to figure out if they can relax these rules permanently for bicyclists with the goal to increase the number of bicyclists that use bart. they estimate 4% of riders bike to stations. they are hoping to boost that to 8% over the next decade. this morning we caught up with one man that rides his bike to the bart station in concord. norrally he leaves earl -- normally he leaves early. >> some people are not as good as others about keeping their bikes out of the way. hopefully everybody puts their bike in a position today that people can get around it. not blocked. and that we all get along. >> reporter: even during the pilot program bikes will still be banned from the first car on every bart train as well as the escalators in the stations. bart will be doing a survey and

looking for feedback from both ridessers and bicyclists during the next month as this experiment plays out. in the end they will take the results of this experiment and they will try to figure out if they can permanently lift the ban on bicycles. life this morning in berkeley alex savidge. a plan to build a mosque in san martinez one step closer to reality this morning. the santa clara county commission approved plans for the cordova center. it would be located in the area of monterey highway. the center would also include a cemetery and a meeting place. now a large crowd turned out for the meeting in san jose that lasted four hours. opponents have 15 days to appeal the decision. if appealed they would make a final decision on that project. san mateo union high school district denies it discriminated against chinese students. the u.s. department of education is investigating the district after a complaint

filed by a private tutor on behalf of two chinese students. they claim the district is moving them from mills high school to cappuccino high school to boost test scores there. the attribute says they don't make distinction between students on the basis of race, color, oret necessary this. brush fear being called suggestion pushous. it was under control within 30 minutes. firefighters kept the flames from spreading to nearby apartments. neighbors say several kids were seen from running from the area where the fire started. a half hour ago the labor department job report for july came out. employers added 163,000 jobs last month. the best since february. however the unemployment rate went up to 8.3% from 8.2% in

yesterday was hot inland. it stayed cool by the coast. a lot of 60s even with the sun. there will be an increase in the fog today. the cooling has begun. now it was west, southwest gust to 31 up at travis. there is still a sea breeze direction. it's stronger today. westerly breeze at sfo. the fog bank is up there a little higher today. temperature will come down as we get a couple low pressure systems. 50s on the temps. one system carving itself out to the north. there is another little guy right there. a couple of them spinning out here as well. eventually they work their way over to the west coast. so gusty winds about 25. the hottest temps though for monday almost into thursday some inland temps stay rather hot. they will start to drop today and continue that into saturday. lake tahoe not bad. tropical clouds moving in if

his grip. a helicopter lifted them both off the mountain to safety. teenage life guard found out it does not always pay to be a hero. john clark rescued a drowning boy that had been swept out to sea. a few weeks later a portland area hospital sent the young hero a bill for $2600 to pay for the child's medical expenses. the good hearted teenager got stuck with the bill because he agreed to fill out the child's medical forms. so far the parents of the rescued boy has not offered to help but hundreds of other people have offered to help pay that $2600 medical bill. our time now 6:14. united nations general asemily has decided to pass -- assembly has decided to pass a resolution today. previous resolutions were voted down in the u.n. security council. that is where china and russia have veto power. now at the same time, there are concerns about new reports of

rebel portions executing pro government supporters. up until now, it has been mostly the syrian government that has been internationally condemned for its brutality. just about 45 minutes ago the labor department released the new jobs report for the month of july. it shows more jobs were added but unemployment rate went up a bit. ktvu alison burns reports now. that is giving both president obama and mitt romney some new talking points when they make appearances this morning. >> reporter: in just the last few minutes we got reaction from mitt romney that calls the report a hammer blow top middle class families. let's take a closer look at the numbers. the unemployment rate picked up to 8.3% from 8.2% the month before. employers added 163,000 jobs. that is the best performance in five months. the presidential race has

6:17. facebook wants to get rid of more than $83 million fake accounts. in a quarterly earnings report they say most are cuply cat -- duplicates. facebook saws the rest of the fake accounts are undesirable and used for spamming. facebook says they disable any false accounts if they find them. former child size psychologist accused of molesting patients will be back in court this morning. william ayres is competent to stand trial again. he was committed to napa state hospital last year due to the beginning of de men somewhat ended in the jury dead lock. the marchs rover is --

it has been missing since last week. police say the theft may have been a prank and the thieves got scared. time now 6:24. sonoma county girl that survived flesh eating bacteria has become the star of this years fair. last night missy pendleton got a huge ovation. she paraded around with her pet lamb. she is off of her crutches after a tenth operation. that slight limp she has that is the only hint her right leg has been ravaged. >> the physical therapist got down on her hands and knees and appeared to appeared. >> she spent more than a month in the hospital being treated for that flesh eating bacteria that almost took her life. a long awaited water shuttle is launching on lake

in the news for you right now oakland police chief stepping up his campaign against violent crime in the city. claudine wong is here now to tell us the chief is again calling for a youth curfew. >> reporter: good morning, dave. it appears the police chief is ready to talk about a curfew again. he is dealing with the rising crime rate and shrinking department in oakland. according to comments he made to the chronicle, he thinks the curfew can help. now curfew was last talked about after the death of three- year-old carlos nava. after that time former police chief anthony bats was charged for -- the mayor and the other council members questioned the effectiveness of a youth curfew. it has been a rough year for the city of oakland with

violent crime on the rise in double digit fashion. and the chief says more than 400 suspects are teens. the curfew may serve two purposes. keeping young kids out of the harm way and keeping them from get into trouble. how would all of it work? the chief told the chronicle he wants a public private partnership. a nonprofit group that may help with deal with spades and staff issues. details are still being worked out we already know -- some members have been vocal about a lack of communication between the mayor and council. they will have to find some common ground on this idea of a curfew if the idea is going to get any traction this time around. live here in oakland claudine wong. the newspaper business apparently very competitive on the streets of san jose. but now some small publications say they are the victims of

theft by the biggest publishers in town. they claim that -- this claim came after a discovery earlier this week when 20 news racks were found in a dumpster at the papers headquarters. >> but caught them with a few. we want to find out how many more they took. why they took them. where they took them from. and then we need to assess the economic damage of all this. >> the mercury news issued a statement saying removing newspaper racks with the request of local cities and businesses is a long standing practice and the pay already strongly denies stealing any organizations news racks. new developments about the investigation into the serial killer case. investigators are trying to identify the remains of a female teenager and a baby found in a well connected to convicted killers wesley shermantine and lauren herzog. the remains fit the profile of a female about 16-18 years old

with mixed ancestry. the skeletal remains were dug up in lyndon several months ago. some of his letters shermantine hinted a pregnant black woman was among the victims buried in that well. the remains of kimberly billy and joe an will finally be returned to their families. they are two of the four victims identified so far by investigators. san francisco police are looking for person of interest in connection with the brutal killing of oman that was last seen in the castro district. here is a sketch of the man police are looking for. he is described as white or latino 5'10" between 25-30 years old. now police say he was last seen leaving a bar on castro street with the victim 28-year-old erik escalon that is shown there. less than 24 hours later his body was found bounded and

and some are starting to wake up. but yeah. they are down on the field where their favorite team plays. speaking of the olympics now. at 4'11" tall she is great. she is gabby douglas. gabby won the women's individual all around gymnastic competition. they call her the flying skills because her aerial moves are incredible. meantime michael phelps extended his olympic medal to 20 medals. and uc berkeley grad aaron helped her team win gold in the women's rowing eight competition. now the u.s. has taken the sole lead in the medal count with 37. china is number two. followed by japan. the host country great britain in fourth police just ahead of germany. it's okay to take your bike

on bart today. alex savidge is in berkeley with more on the pilot program that is only happening this month. alex. >> reporter: it's an experiment of sorts playing out in the next month. today you won't have to leave your bike locked up at the station as you commute to work. that is because bart will be temp racially allowing people to bring their bikes on to the trains during the peak hours. normally they are banned during that time. this is the pilot program playing out today and during the next four days. the goal is to try to increase the number of bicyclists that use bart. they estimate right now 4% of riders bike to stations and they hope to boost that to 8% over the next ten years opinion some people say the bike blackout during rush hour discourages people to commuting on bikes. >> it will be easier with the blackout period. kill go a little later if i need to and not have to worry about being banned or asked by the station agents not to enter

the station. it helps. >> reporter: as part of the pilot program, bart will survey riders for feedback. they will be analyzing delays if there are any. and the results of this experiment will be sent along to barts board of directors. ultimately they will make the decision later on this year about whether to permanently lift the ban on bicycles during rush hour. even during the pilot program it's important to keep in mind bikes will not be allowed on the first car of any bart trains and still not allowed on the escalators. live this morning in berkeley alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll see how it goes. san jose is becoming a more bike friendly city. new bike lanes have gone up on five downtown streets. including third, fourth, and tenth. later this summer they will add green bike lanes to san fernando street. tar the project could mean a reduction to speed and increase

inland temps will come down. 60s to 100s. warm air settled in and squashed that fog bank. dense coastal fog. today it's lifting. it has been below 1,000 feet. now we are seeing up around 1500 feet. hot inland temps. cool by the coast. things are changing a little bit. we've had a stronger sea breeze. there is more fog here in the morning. the cooling has begun for many. not for all. there is still a few locations. and probably out toward vacaville where it will be very hot. temperatures 50s right now. trend is to bring those temps down. one little low pressure down here. stronger one up in the north. both working their muscle to give us a little bit of a westerly breeze and take that high pressure system and bump it up out of here. temperature trend is down for many locations. few high clouds inland. i think you will see more tomorrow. windy at times. fog, sun, cooler. temperatures starting to 90s for some. 60nd and 70s for others.

here. >> reporter: police were finally able to get hernandez out of her car and arrested her. she will be charged with fours of assault with a felony weapon. we also learned she is on parole. as far as the officers injuries go, one had bruises and abrasions on his knee. the other officer suffered back injuries but we're told both of them are going to be okay. and they were both released from the hospital late last night. reporting live janine de la vega. a drug and gun raid in stockton led police to a disturbing discovery. take a look. police say they found a photo of a six-year-old in a car seat pointing a large gun at the camera. police believe the gun is the same recovered from ha home on south drake avenue yesterday. police also found thousands of pounds of ammunition and drugs including cocaine and ecstasy. two men were arrested. police say the boy is with his mother. time now 6:47. new this morning boxer floyd

mayweather junior is out of jail. he was released in las vegas just hours ago. there he is with a hood on. he left in a car that included his family and rapper 50-cent. he served two months of a three month sentence after atreing to a plea deal if that allowed mayweather to avoid trial and f any charges. gay right supporters are planning a kiss in at all chic- fil-a restaurants. they urging same sex couples to take part in this kissing demonstration. they are angry about comments made from chic phil a's. however the fast food chain has received a bug boost if

degrees cooler for many inland locations. one little low coming in. another one to the north knocking that high out of the way. fog, sun cooler for most. high clouds inland. a little breeze windy at times. still 90s. take another day saturday we'll get out of the 90s for the most inland locations. 60 rs and 70s for many other areas. clouds high and low clouds on saturday. cooler just keep it right there for sunday. slight warmup monday and tuesday. toyota is the world's largest car maker again. this morning they report selling 4.97 million vehicles in the first half of this year. gm did make it to the top spot after toyota's production dropped because of last years earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. the car sharing network lost $422,000 for the second quarter. that is better than forecasted 21% increase in membership will be offset by rising costs for

almost 200 points to 13,079. that is after a surprising report ons jobs market. unpolite -- unemployment rate actually up a bit. time now 6:54. a farmer in vermont accused of using a tractor to crush seven police cars. the farmer was angry about being arrested on charges of marijuana possession and resisting arrest. damage to those police cars estimate at $250,000. back here at home millions of dollars of art work may be missing. the bay citizen reports they have hired a detective on this. civil grand jury criticized the arts division for not keeping track of a $90 million collection. there is estimated 4,000 pieces

ranging from scrollentures -- sculptures to paintings. seal was loan marine into oakland international at 1:30 this morning. it will be taken to the marine animal center to be treated. first time they have made it all the way to hawaii. they normally live in california or off the coast of alaska. hundreds of firefighters are struggling to contain a huge wild fire. it's threatening dozens of trailer homes and other structures. the fire has burned more than four square miles. it's only 5 pest contained -- 5% contained. another top official is leaving lawrence livermore lab. deputy director of science and technology was leaving to pursue other opportunities. he has been on leave for the past two weeks.
