at levin worth street to see where there was such a miracle. david? >> reporter: they are calling this nothing short of a miracle. right here, you see a collapsed street light. over there a bit of scaffolding that was taken down by the giant crew that you see the crew measuring. this all started at 7:40 this morning. they were working to renovate the outside of the arlington hotel. the crane on the sloping section of levinworth street started tipping. it scraped the arm of the hotel and ripped down the scaffolding moments before the crew was set to go up in it and it smashed and totaled the rear of the truck and they were loading the bed. the accident has kept the intersection closed to traffic for the last four and a half

hours as police continue their investigation here. >> this is the kind of high density area. people are milling around. kids are going to summer school. it is a miracle that no one was seriously injured at all. >> reporter: police tell me because no one was injured, cal osha was not called to the scene. they will make a report and share it with the department of building inspections which has an investigator here. san francisco is seeing a construction boone. coming up at 6:00 tonight. how they are supervising multiple accidents such as this one. reporting live, david stevenson. ktvu, channel 2 news. the jobs report for july is out. it shows there were more jobs created but the nation's unemployment rate also went up. 163,000 jobs were added last

violating parole. oakland's police chief is renewing the call for a city wide curfew. he said keeping young children off the streets would help with the increase in homicides and other violent crimes. he is still working out the details of the curfew plan and hopes to have the city council cell pass an ordinance before the end of the year. >> he will stay and this is where i live. >> i have no choice to moved to piedmont or where. i should feel safe here. >> i was born here. we never had a curfew before. >> you think it would help? >> no. >> last year, the council failed to approve a similar ordinance by the police chief. police made a disturbing disrecovery during a raid in stockton. they found a picture of a 6-year-old in a car seat pointed right at the camera. they believe that is the swim

one recovered from the home on south drake avenue. two men were arrested. neighbors said it shows crime has gotten out of control in the city of stockton. time to get ready to head back to school in just a few weeks. big effort is underway to help those in need for extra support. >> they join us live from a warehouse. where volunteers are working hard to put together an amazing number of backpacks with crucial supplies. good afternoon, nanine. >> reporter: hi, torii. you can see hundreds of backpacks have been donated. volunteers are busy assembling the backpacks and the goal is to collect 15,000. >> they need people to buy supplies like these. one of the things they are short on is scientific calculators. it is being organized by the family giving tree. they are sorting through the backpacks that have been donated and see if the

necessary supplies are inside and if they have certain grade levels. they are donateed to 100 schools in the bay area out of santa clara county. they are low income and qualify for the federal reduced and free meal program. >> the students if they start cool without the materials we are giving them. they start with nothing and the budget cuts and everything effecting a lot of the schools, the teachers can't afford to pie everything they need for their students. >> we are told in the broughter bay area. 325,000 students qualify for the federal free mail program. providing 15,000 backpacks is a drop in the bucket. organizers say they have awaiting list of other schools who have under privileged children who need school supplies. you can go to the website at ktvu.com and click on web lungs. reporting live, ktvu's news. they closed the golden gate

. police chase a suspected car thief across the bay area overnight. it started in pittsburgh and then to richmond and the bay bridge. can you see sparks flying from the suspect's car. tires blew and traveling on the rims. speeds reached 100 miles an hour. the vehicle came to a stop on willow pass road in concord, the suspect was taken into custody. one person was hurt in the north bay in a rollover crash of an armored car. it happened two hours ago on the 2200 block of lucas valley road. a brinks truck went down an embankment and ended up on its roof. one of the two people was taken to the hospital. a tow truck was brought in to bring in the brinks vehicle. they say the accident has been completely cleared. it was a tough commute this

morning on the peninsula. a gravel spill from a stent involving a big rig and car left three lanes of 101 closed for more than two hours in redwood city. it happened at 5:00 a.m. near while avenue. they cleared the travel from the highway and it is just before 9:00. >> no injuries were report the crash. >> congress is considering a bill to consider this from federal shut downs and seizures. barbara lee introduce introduced the legislation yesterday. it would align federal law to state's laws and allow for safe access to medical marijuana for patients. >> the introduction comes less than a month after the u.s. justice department served an asset for tight tour lawsuit against a medical marijuana dispense sear. >> bar -- dispensary. >> for the first time bicycles are being allowed on trains

numbers will be falling off and we will continue to see the cool down. in addition to seeing the cool down, we are going to see thunderstorms over the sierra and parts of the central valley. even here in the bay area, we may see some. we have low pressure that will be coming from the south. that is what helping to cool us down. the high pressure is sitting over us and bringing us the hot, hot weather. >> it begins for saturday as well as sunday. by tomorrow, we will notice an increase in the mid and high level clouds. i mentioned a moment ago, we have the flow coming in this direction. if you are going to the sierra, a fire watch expected there tomorrow. here at home, it looks like the east bay hills may see a shower or twoful we will be tracking it for you. picking up this afternoon, you may notice, if you look ahead. midlevel clouds will be moving through. tomorrow, we see the impact. starting here in the morning. we are mostly gray.
