complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. fire crews are on alert tonight worried about lightning strikes across northern california. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. well, lightning is here and more is coming bringing with it heightened fire danger. ktvu's debora villalon is live in the north bay, where several surrounding counties are under red-flag warnings. >> reporter: we're at a calfire center where

they could be busy tomorrow and folks in lake and mendicino counties could wake up to some lightning-caused fires. >> this emergency command center in saint helena is already busy. >> all the strikes are dangerous. >> reporter: and the lightning hasn't even swept in yet, but more than 300 strikes registered in six hours around yosemite, the southern signs foothills, dry lightning, the worst kind. >> there is not a whole lot of rain with it either, so that is what is concerning us is the lack of rain that follows the lightning strikes. it's not going to put any fires out on its own that it could potentially start. >> reporter: and the fire fuels are tinder dry, even though cool, cloudy days don't feel like high danger. >> the stations have extra personnel and engines are calfire is beefing up with more lightning teams, everyone

remembers the severe thunderstorms four summers ago that lit up california with some 2,000 lightning fires in 26 counties. by the time they were out, a million acres burned and 15 lives lost. the station has a new camera, mounted high on mount saint helena with 360-degree view for any tell-tale strikes or smoke. >> i will always remember 2008. >> because the lightning risk, air tack crews are getting what is called an early up. ready to flow and spot fires at 8:00 a.m. instead of 10:00 all of this cal fire says even more reason for californians to be careful and not get any accidental fires going. debora villalon ktvu channel 2 news. and investigators tonight are looking into lightnings a possible cause of this fire in santa cruz county. coming up in just 11 minutes, the reason the path of today's blaze had firefighters especially worried. calfire says the no.

1 fire danger right now to northern california is that dry lightning. a monsoon-like weather system from southern california is producing dozens of dry lightning strikes as you saw there in deb's piece. fire officials say the area at most risk are the mountains between the sonora pass and oregon border. and today you did notice the cloud cover moving in from the south. that is monsoonal moisture that has been on the increase the past 6-12 hours. right now on live stormtracker 2 radar you can pick out the camera and a few isolated thunderstorms possible within the cells, but not a lot of rain hitting the ground. in fact, here is a closer inspection as we look at a few sprinkle around san francisco. i have been watching more activity as you can pick up to the north of calistoga and

davis and sacramento areas. earlier today about an hour ago i noticed more coverage in this region. these are the ones that we're concerned about just to the sacramento area and to the east, right around the sierra. as far as the red-flag warning that is in place right now for the northern california mountains from lake county towards mendocino county and toward sierra nevada in place react now into sunday morning with a chance of thunderstorms, and the potential for some dry lightning. coming up, i will let you know if the thunderstorm chances linger into the second half of the weekend and break down the final of our next warming trend. in plumas county this picture from the u.s. forest service shows some of the smoke and flames from the chips fire. it's burning in the flumas national forest near the town of belden in the feather river canyon.

officials have lifted mandatory evacuation orders. better news for crews near redding. significant progress has been made against the salt creek fire. it's now about 70% contained. full contreatment is expected containment is expected tomorrow. tomorrow. there is no word yet on when the evacuation will be lifted. dozens of homes up in flames coming up at 10:30, the heart- breaking devastation as several fires and triple-digit heat create a dangerous combination in oklahoma. monterrey county sheriff's deputies say a 16-year-old girl kidnapped has been found and her supported kidnapper is in custody. they say eunice serrato and her boyfriend juan salazar turned

kids. everything gets underway sunday at noon. live in oakland, kristine kafton. the obama campaign headquarters in oakland re- opened today. we were there this afternoon as volunteers repainted the campaign logo. plywood covers another window that was shotterred by protesters. several campaign workers were inside the office at 18m and telegraph when the vandalism happened around 9:00 p.m. during the monthly art murmur event. nobody was hurt >> a man was shot to death early this morning at an apartment complex near summit hospital at 2th and summit streets. there are reports that a resident shot and killed a man who was allegely trying to get into the apartment. police are still trying to piece together what led up to the shooting. so far no one has been arrested emeryville police are looking for a teenager who went missing yesterday morning. a missing person's report was filed for 15-year-old gaijin

holquin. aderogatory family members holquin is an honor roll student who doesn't get into trouble and has never been out late by himself. anybody with information is asked to call emeryville police. we have video of three suspects robbing a jewelry store. >> reporter: it happened to quickly, a man with a gun was on top of this jewelry storeowner and her husband before they knew it. as the gunman jump officer the counter, two others in all black moved in behind him. five cameras inside recorded it. when one employee made a run for the door, they tackled him to the ground. then the 87-year-old mann the right side of the screen went after the man with the gun before he was also slammed to the floor hitting his head on a jewelry case. but whether the masked-men made they are getaway, one camera caught a clean view of least

one of their faces. >> he came in to the front door with a sledgehammer through the glass. >> a day earlier on the other side of the bay, pave's jewelry store in oakland was the target of a similar robbery. a series of surveillance cameras at jewelry storm gave employees a good look at men who were about to rob them and a buzzer at the door slowed them down just enough so everybody could get to safety. >> reporter: owner endlich says he is grateful for the support of the neighboring businesses since the robbery and while police are still reviewing the video from this heist, endlich wonders if there is a connection. >> there is a very few number of people doing this and once they are not on the streets anymore, i think it will make everything a lot safer. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, thursday's jewelry store robbery in oakland was a latest in the rash of crime along college avenue. the merchants association confirms that the area has had as many as 20 commercial break-

there are reports tonight that the man accuse of shooting former congresswoman gabby girlfriends is set to accept' plea-deal. according to the los angeles times details of the deal are not available, but loughner will likely pled guilty to some of the federal charges against him in change for a prison sentence. that way he would not risk the death penalty a trial. his next court date is tuesday. fire investigators are still on the scene of a glass fire in santa cruz coming up next the las cumbres fire is now out, but investigators say it will take days to figure out what sparked the fire.

as ktvu's patti lee tells us mountain residents knew what to do when the fire started. >> reporter: 250 firefighters, four air tankers and two helicopters were key to beating back these flames. >> i woke up to helicopter sounds. and then i looked out and it was all of? smoke and he thought it was smog at first. >> reporter: a 911 call this morning alerted calfire to smoke sightings in the las cumbres neighborhood. crews spotted flames around boulder creek. because of heavy cloud cover the fire was essentially believed to cover 30 acres. it turned out to be just over six acres, but on tough terrain. it's tough acserious one way in and one way out, so if there were evacuations it could have been a difficult situation to get fire equipment in and residents out. >> reporter: chp and the santa cruz sheriff's department were on hand to assist. >> the area is rural and

mountainous. >> reporter: one homeowner evacuated voluntary. while others got ready to leave. >> it wasn't sort of immediate danger, but i thought, let's pack our stuff. >> right through the canyon and to the house. >> reporter: she watched from they are deck as men and machine fought fire with water and retardant. as the hours passed she packed up her pets and prepared for the worst. >> i have stuff prepared of we're all pretty prepared here in this community. so i did have boxes of stuff. >> reporter: it took five hours, but the fire is fully contained. but a crew will stay on-scene for the next two days keeping an eye out for hotspots and flare-ups. in santa cruz county, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. fire crews were called to a san josi trouble spot to tackle multiple fires. officials three fires were the order this morning at kelley park.

a spokesman says if the weather had been hot or windy, those fires could easily have gotten out of control. >> our concern about fires like this is because there were three distinct locations, people have to be very careful what they are doing out in the wildland interface. it's very possible that you could create a fire that threatened many structures and injures people and destroys property. >> including today's fires, at least eight fires have broken out at or near the park since july 11th. hundreds head out to a bay area crime hotspot to raise awareness about the young and vulnerable victims. group walked along a stretch of international boulevard in oakland for what they say is a known hub for sex trafficking. they say girls as young as 12 are sextually exploited, abused and in fear of their lives. >> people think of this as something that happens in other countries bub it's happening on the streets of california everydayproposition

group of skydivers in illinois this weekend got together to set i new record, 138 people jumped from six different airplanes flying at 18,500'. they flew heads down and then joined to create a massive formation that they call a snowflake. it took 15 attempts over three days before they were finally able to set that world-record. investigators say today they raided a large illegal pot farm in a wildlife preserve in southern sacramento sacramento near the community of thortonp thorton. they say they found approximately 10,000 marijuana plants. one man was arrested while of a dozen others fled. officials plan to return to the area to finish the clean-up. is there there is a new lane configuration on the benicia-martinez bridge. caltrans crews changed the setup while a new automated

24 hours from right now the newest mars probe from nasa will arrive on the red planet. the probe called curiosity will land itself with the aid of a computer program. now it may take some time before engineers know if the landing was successful, since radio signals take almost half an hour to make the round fripp mars to earth and back again. the nuclear-powered rover is carrying a range of cameras and science gear to examine the geology of mars. tomorrow night we'll tightend out. let's check in with mark tamayo and you said there is lightning out there. >> there is lightning moving to the east of the bay area. this is always a concern. it just takes one lightning strike to spark a fire.
