>> both victims were taken to the hospital where they are listed in stable condition. the shooter remains at large. >> a suspected car thief is under arrest after a brief chase through international boulevard 11:30 last night. the chase went on for several blocks before he rammed into the barrier on first avenue. witnesses couldn't believe what they saw and heard. >> i heard the cars going really fast. then i heard the bank into the wall there. and i have seen two or three cops chasing after them. the suspect suffered minor injuries. first taken to the hospital before going to the jail. a man is behind bars for a deadly attack outside the martinez chamber of commerce. police received a call at the chamber office on vista avenue. witnesses reported seeing a man strike a woman. the woman was taken to the

hospital where she was pronounced dead. gist san castillo was booked into the county jail. there was a officer-involved shoot anything san francisco. they received a report of a man with a gun near dakota near the housing projects. officers in the area on an unrelated incident spotted the man and chased him. they turned towards the officer and fired a gun in his hand. they hit the suspect. he was taken to san francisco general hospital with nonlife threatening injuries and no officers were hurt. 16-year-old girl is the subject after amber alert has been found safe. they turned themselves in at the u.s. border yesterday morning. she had been missing when they found two men dead inside the home where she was staying. serrato's boyfriend is a person of interest in the double homicide. they are searching for a

teenager who disappeared on friday morning. she was last seen wearing a gray shirt. blue jacket and black jeans. family members say he is an honor student who stays out of trouble and never has been out late by himself. he weighs 150-pound with brown eyes and black hair. anyone with information is asked to call the police. the nasa explorer curiosity is scheduled to touchdown at 10:30 tonight on the martian surface. it is sure to be a nerve wracking day. ken? >> reporter: well, it should be. mission control for the mars curiosity lander is down at jet pro pungs laboratories but -- propulsion laboratories but this is one of the best places for the public to experience one of the most

numbers coming up. getting across the bonicia martinez bridge could be more challenging all week. cal trans crews last night temporarily changed the lanes while a new automated toll collection and accounting system sin stalled. the two lanes on the left of the toll plaza are closed until noon. that same closure will happen every day until friday the nasa space explorer known as curiosity is now in the home stretch as it approaches mars. it is scheduled to touch down on the martian surface at 10:30 our time tonight. ken is at nasa aims in mountain view to tell us what is sure to be a nerve racking day there. >> reporter: there's not a lot of activity on this sunday morning at nasa aims research center. that will change later today. nasa aims had a great deal to do with the testing of this curiosity rover, this 2 and a half billion dollar rover. it is fitting that today this will be one of the best places in the bay area to be to take

in an experience that the public is invited to nasa aims. let's look at what makes this landing on mars so unique. like other rover missions, it starts with entry into the martian atmosphere. curiosity will be traveling at 13,200 miles per hour. parachutes will deploy. parachutes tested right here at nasa aims. then we start to see the truly unique part of curiosity's arrival. a rocket-powered sky crane will lower the car sized rover gently onto the surface on a tether. once down the tether is cut and the sky crane flies a safe distance for a crash landing. on top of the incredibly complicated landing maneuvers, nasa is also monitoring the comparably more mundane martian weather. >> we've designed the space craft to basically handle all the conditions we've seen in past years whether they're clear or dusty. but we continue to monitor it in real time, getting data from the orbiters at mars every stay this week to make sure we understand what conditions the

not everyone can buy it. a new report shows 44% of people who live in california are renters which means they cannot buy solar generated electricity like homeowners can. the solar industry and lawmaker is hoping to change that. they're working on a bill that would allow tenants to come together and buy solar power from a shared facility. the walnut creek school board has a big decision tomorrow. they would consider a plan that would raise developers fees for new residential projects. the money would go towards building new school facilities. officials say to accommodate the growing number of students the new developments bring in. the number of students is expected to rise by more than 300 in the next five years. the school district needs 5.2 million in the next five years to build or renovate schools. some schools are still waiting for their share of emergency repair funds after the state settled a class action lawsuit over classroom conditions. schools in 39 counties have waited as long as four years for money to fix leaking roofs, crumbling pavement and clogged sewer lines.

some north bay communities are under red flag fire warnings. there are more than 300 lightning strikes in a six hour period yesterday. more are expected today. new this morning, a woman is in the napa county jail for allegedly driving under the influence while her two young children were in the car. 28-year-old amman gentleman gillman of lake county -- amanda gillman of lake county was stopped last night. police described her condition as extremely intoxicated apparently from alcohol and marijuana use. her one and two-year-old children were in the car with her. gillman faces charges including child endanger and suspicion of driving without a license. child protective services has taken custody of the two children. and there is a new plea this morning to help find the people who vandalized dozens of cross at a laugh amphetamine peace memorial -- at a lafayette peace memorial. 60 to 70 crosses were damaged and ripped from the ground last week. each cross represents a service member killed in iraq or afghanistan. the crosses have been removed but there is a gaping hole now

corta madeira robbery and a similar robbery in oakland. that one in oakland was the latest in a rash of crimes along college avenue. the merchant's association confirms the area has had as many as 20 commercial break-ins in the past few weeks. but officials think a man arrested during an attempted burglary last week may have been responsible for several of those recent break-ins. the county sheriff's department is investigating the discovery of two men found shot to death. deputies say firefighters discovered the bodies of two latino men yesterday. the men's names haven't be released and the killing motive isn't known. a trust fund has been set up for the children of two people killed in a crash in san bruno. on july 28, the car cares a couple was hit by a pickup truck at the el camino real intersection. these are pictures of that crash.

our tomb tonight. ken pritchett is at nasa aims in mountain view to tell us what crowds are expected today. >> reporter: well, to be precise, nasa says the curiosity rover will land at 10:31 tonight on mars. but the doors here at nasa aims research center open to the public at 4:00. perhaps as many as 10,000 people are expected to come here to attend this public event. why all the excitement? it's the most ambitious mars mission ever, and certainly the most harrowing landing on mars ever. it's called the seven minutes of terror, because all nasa can do is watch and wait as the curiosity rover enters the martian atmosphere at more than 13,000 miles per hour. huge parachutes tested here at nasa aims will be deployed, but its final approach will be on decent rockets. because the rover is so large air bags used on previous rovers can't be used. and because rockets can kick up

damaging dust, a sky train will lower the rover on a tether down to the surface. if all goes well curiosity will spend at least two years investigating gayle crater for signs of conditions in the past suitable for life. >> what we really want to know about mars, did it ever have life, does it have life today? curiosity may not answer that question but it could at least find the building blocks of life. >> reporter: curiosity has a suite of cameras and we should start seeing some of those high resolution images later this week, and we could see a more crude image from the surface tonight shortly after the landing. the seed from mission control will be fed online, but you can watch it here at nasa aims. doors open at 4:00 to the public, thousands as i said earlier are expected to attend. those watching here will also be able to talk to nasa scientists, or at least hear from them about the mission. again, touch down is expected to take place at 10:31 p.m. at nasa aims in mountain view,

ken pritchett, ktvu. it's 9:44. two bicyclists are planning to ride from alaska to south america in an effort to raise money for a bay area nonprofit. the ride is set to start august 24th. they'll be collecting donations for the herrs breast cancer foundation. the nonprofit provides post- surgery equipment for patients not covered by insurance. neil walsky says he got the idea for the ride after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. for more on how to support the breast cancer foundation go to our website and click on web links. a new study finds more moms in the u.s. are breast-feeding their babies. if c.d.c.'s latest breast- feeding report hard says 47% of mothers breast fed for six months in 2009, compared to 44% the year before. the rate at which morse tried breast-feeding also increased about 2%. the c.d.c. report also found general improvements in how well hospitals and birth centers support breast-feeding.

restrictions on drinking while floating down the american river there sacramento county. there are already bans for memorial day, fourth of july and labor day drinking. an event last month called rafters gone wild ended with 23 arrests and that may have been the last straw. tuesday the board of supervisors will can be giving the regional parks director the power to impose alcohol bans on the river whenever the director thinks things could get out of hand. a powerful thunderstorm in chicago forced organizers to evacuate the lollipaluzza music festival. 10s of thousands of fans filed out of grant park and went to underground parking garages that were designated as shelters. crowds returned to the venue when the storm passed and organizers inspected the park for damage. >> for safety it's good. i came here from seattle. >> i'm kind of mad, because i -- >> it really sucks. >> i like the concert. >> the evacuation comes one year after high winds caused a stage to collapse at a concert at the indiana state fair, killing seven people. more than 100 demonstrators

potential recruits are overweight. the problem is so serious the study says it could translate to a potential threat of national security. in southern california, a palm desert veterinarian has been arrested for animal cruelty. police are investigating douglas huber. he was booked into jail after a dog locked in his car suffered seer and arrived. deputies found the dog in distress and broke the window to get the dog out. the eight-year-old shepherd died on the scene and is suspected to have died of heat exhaustion. >> and a 700 pound wayward sea lion is back in the ocean after detouring into the san diego creek. he was captured friday after he swam up the creek from the coast. they found him relaxing on the creek bank. officers used horns to keep him from going any further inland. the water at that point was two feet deep. experts with the pacific marine mammal center checked over the sea lion and released him back into the ocean. a fascinating exhibit in san diego features a sea creaturer
