. investigators say the gunfire followed a heated conversation between young men in for different cars. >> one opened fire on the other striking both occupants of that vehicle, one being an adult and one a juvenile. >> both the 13-year-old boy and the adult victim are expected to survive, but police are still looking for suspects. high winds and thunderstorms are making a fight against wildfires a difficult task this morning. the fire in the forest has grown to more than 10,000 acres. high winds pushed those flames in several directions and another red flag warning is in affect today. fire crews say that is their biggest concern as they head to the front lines this morning. high winds and lightning also making it difficult for fire crews in oklahoma.

we'll show you just how many acres have burned so far and what people face as they return to their homes. an on ramp on interstate 880 in oakland is scheduled to reopen in just about 30 minutes. caltrans shut down the northbound high street 42nd avenue on ramp overnight so crews can continue demolition work on a retaining wall. that on ramp is scheduled to reopen at 5:00 a.m. if you're a fast-track user you'll be closing in the slow lane across the car mean fast bridge. lanes will return to normal from noon until 8:00 p.m. caltrans crews are expected to scoop out the last bit of dirt sometime this week.

crews will then focus their efforts on creating a two-foot thick lining of concrete and plastic. the 3400 foot tunnel between -- from oakland should be open to traffic by the end of next year. speaking of traffic, let's check in with sal. >> good morning. traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area. as a matter of fact, we look at the commute now. you can see traffic on 80 westbound. not doing that poorly as you drive out toward the area. there are no major problems heading to the mcarthur maze. the toll plaza traffic looks good with no major issues coming into the city. we're looking at the southeast bay. this is westbound 237. good time for you to get a jump on the monday. westbound 237 traffic looks very nice. 4:36. we do have some low clouds. yesterday it looked like the fog maxed itself out.

it made a strong surge inland. temperatures warmed up compared to saturday when we had the tropical clouds. here we go again. high in the middle of the country backs off and starts to move back. it does not affect the coast except the fog gets thicker. their temperatures stay in the 60s. the east bay will warm up the most here. west, southwest 18. yesterday it was about 30 miles an hour, west at 9. still a component after sea breeze. 50 on the temps. 55, 57, 58 degrees. tropical clouds are gone. there's still a lot down towards arizona, southern california, so keep an eye on that. maybe wednesday there could be a possibility of some of that coming in again but the main message is if you're buy the coast and the bay, it will be nice. 60s, 70s inland. we'll start to warm up to near 80 degrees. warmest santa clara county. still a west bridge but low 90s. we'll go with that for antioch. upper 80s if some. fairfield is in there. livermore should say 88. 76 valeo. 78 santa rosa.

morgan hill warming up but the city 65. oakland 72. 77 mountain view. fog, sun, warmer. does appear -- keep an eye on wednesday for tropical clouds but does looks like thursday, friday will be the hottest days of the week inland. >> thank you. this morning nasa is celebrating a huge success in its most ambitious mission to mars. the curiosity mars rover landed safely on target inside a crater on the surface of the red planet. scientists began celebrating as cure comesty began trans-- curiosity began transmitting low resolution photos within moments of touchdown. nasa says it's the most important step so far in getting people to another planet in our solar system. >> president obama has laid out a bold vision for sending humans to mars. and today's landing marks a significant step toward achieving this goal. >> for the next two years, curiosity will drill into rocks and scoop up soil. it's looking for clues on the martian environment for in supported life in the form of

microscopic organisms. nasa workers weren't the only ones who wanted to see the first photos curiosity sent from mars. hundreds of people gathered at nasa ames in mountain view to watch the giant screen set up for visitors. they also had a chance to hear from nasa researchers about exactly what signs curiosity might find that would indicate mars has supported some form of life. >> it's really exciting. it's a new life. if we can find water, we can go there. it's a new beginning. it's another place to live. >> it's taken ten years and two and a half billion dollars for the mission to get this far. high resolution color photos are expected to start arriving on earth in the next few days. 4:39 is the time right now. nascar race turns deadly over the weekend, but the accident did not happen on the track. what killed one fan and sent several others to the hospital. >> plus, another glitch for the

>> good morning. overcast. it will burn off. inland temps jump up. coast and bay, not much change, 60s, 70s. a lightning strikes killed one fan and injured nine others. it happened yesterday at pocono raceway in pennsylvania. the race was canceled because of storms and fans were asked to take cover. one person is still in the hospital in critical condition this morning. tropical storm ernesto continues to swirl off shore this morning. its next stop hon dower as. -- honduras. meteorologist say it could become a weak hurricane by

tuesday. over the weekend the storm dumped heavy rains over jamaica. it did not cause any serious damage. hot, dry weather is making it difficult to control several wildfires burning across oklahoma. as many as 18 wildfires have started since last week. one of the largest fires has burned almost 91 square miles. thousands of people were asked to evacuate hair homes last week. many of them were allowed to return home yesterday and found there was nothing left. >> except we have to maybe try and see if we can find anything that was left over. there's not a whole lot for them to do. >> investigators still don't know what caused the fires, although one that started on friday is being investigated as possible arson. president obama is raising cash for his campaign today with the help of hollywood. he's heading to connecticut where he is holding two fund- raisers. one is at the home of film mogul harvey weinstein. guests include weinstein and

ann hathaway. he' expected to raise at least $2.5 million for the campaign. president obama and republican rival mitt romney are locked in a tight contest for the white house with only three months to go before the election. romney is expected to name his running mate before this month's republican national convention. later today, president obama will sign a measure aimed at helping the men and women who served in america's armed forces. the bill will help provide for the needs of veterans and their families with improved health care, housing and education. the same bill is designed to restrict protests at military funerals. time now 4:45. southwest airlines says it is sending out refunds after customers were accidentally billed multiple times for a single flight. the airline says a computer glitch was supposed to give fans a 50% discount on fares and it backfired. some customers were charged as many as 20 times. southwest will cover the extra billings as well as pick up any

overdraft fees caused by the additional charges. the superman ride at six flags in vallejo officially back open this morning but the ride did not start back up without a few glitches. yesterday the park opened up the ride but at noon the roller coaster was shut down again for 20 minutes so crews could adjust the power setting, the same issue that stopped the roller coaster 100 feet in the air a week ago stranding a dozen riders for nearly two hours. no one was hurt during the incident but park officials say testing is done and all problems have been corrected. 4:46 is the time. back over to sal for a look at traffic. early monday. you knew it would get here. right now traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area. we are looking at the commute that looks pretty good around most of the bay area. as a matter of fact, we're looking at the east shore freeway. that traffic continues to move along very nicely heading out to the mcarthur maze.

no problem major -- no mayor problems here. the bay toll plaza continues to be like getting into san francisco. might want to get a jump on the crowd. there was some road work on 80 eastbound right near the mcarthur maze. we're going to check on that next time. and this morning's commute in the south bay starting off pretty nicely on the roads here. nothing major that's causing my big delays on any of the freeways. let's go to steve at 4:46. >> thank you. the tropical clouds from saturday are gone. big fog bank from sunday still parts of it there. it maxed itself out yesterday. today i think it will burn off sooner. temperatures inland will come up but it's a pattern we've seen since june. the coast really doesn't get in on the warm-up. it stays in the 60s for most. 50s on the temps. everyone is really consistent here. about 55 and 58 covers the spread. tropical clouds, a lot of those still hanging around arizona. maybe wednesday wrapping back around. but until then, today and tomorrow after the fog burns off, temperatures go up.

san tran police will hold a press conference about a shooting over the weekend. officers say they were forced to shoot a man who had threatened them with a gun. the man was wounded but is suspected to survive. the police officers were not hurt. a hostage standoff at a sporting goods store in yuba city ended peacefully. after four hours the suspect turned himself into police but the manual had walked into the store about -- man had walked into the store about 11:00 yesterday morning. he grabbed an 18-year-old store clerk by the neck and fired shots into the air. two workers were held hostage. luckily they were not hurt. 12 other customers were in the storm at the time but most of them ran for safety. the chp is investigating a fatal accident on interstate 80 in fairfield. it happened shortly before 9:00 last night near green valley road. investigators say one person was killed in a crash involving

a motorcycle and a car. the accident shut down all westbound lanes of 880 for nearly 90 minutes. today antinuclear activists in san francisco will protest outside the japanese consulate and the pge headquarters to mark the 67th anniversary of the day the u.s. dropped an atomic bomb on hiroshima, japan. >> yesterday protesters marched on lawrence livermore lab because of its work on nuclear weapons. among the protesters, a survivor of the bombing. >> i immediately covered my eyes. and i saw even to this day i clearly remember, i saw the fingers, the bones, bones of my fingers as i was looking at an x-ray film. >> protesters are targeting the japanese consulate in san

francisco today to call for a nuclear free japan following the meltdown at the fukushima nuclear plant following the earthquake and sue familiar my last year -- sue tsunami last year. the 57th of the bombing of hiroshima was marked with a memorial ceremony attended by a grandson of president harry truman who ordered the attack. in a news conference after the ceremony, 55-year-old clifton truman daniel said he is committed to doing all he can to make sure nuclear weapons are never used again. a road repair project begins today in marin county that could cause delays. crews will be working on a stretch of sir fran says drake boulevard that goes through samuel taylor park. they'll be installing a retaining wall. the first phase of a bigger project that will eventually include replacing dozens of drainage culverts and resurfacing the road out there. in santa cruz, demolition work is set to begin on la hon today avenue bridge over highway 1. that means

southbound lanes of highway 1 will be closed at morrissey boulevard between midnight and 5:00 a.m. today and tomorrow. northbound lanes will be closed next weekend. that's all part of a protect,-- project to add new lanes between the two exits. work is expected to completed in six to eight months. 4:53 is the time right now. california lawmakers are heading back to work this morning. their biggest challenge? the state budget. the budget passed in june. it depends on voter approval of governor brown's tax initiatives in november, though, but voters have new reasons to be skeptical. during the recess, investigators found that the department of parks and recreation stashed $54 million in hidden accounts. it was also revealed that lawmakers gave raises to more than a thousand of their employees. also on legislators' minds, pension reform and the governor's expensive rail and water projects. there will be fogging for mosquitoes tonight in brentwood. they'll be spraying in an area

bordered by brentwood creek park ware. it starts at 8:15 this evening. the area is being treated because mosquitoes carrying west nile virus have been detected in that area. we're coming up on 4:55. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. any problems so far? >> nothing major, pam. as a matter of fact, we're doing pretty well around the bay area whether it comes to just wide open roads. let's take a look at what we have here. 101 at the 580 interchange, marin county, you can see the traffic looks good. there -- it's a pretty good drive across the richmond san rafael bridge. the morning commute looks good in san francisco along northbound 101 approaching that 80 split. if you're trying to get a nice drive on the peninsula, that's nice. southbound 101 down to san mateo, that looks good. then hayward 880 southbound on the other side of the bay, that looks good to fremont. 4:55. pretty good fog bank out there. about half of what it was though, yesterday. yesterday it made a huge push

inland. high pressure is its way back, nothing we have we haven't seen already since about the middle of may. the western edge warms up some. smashes the fog near the coast and they don't warm up that much there. 50s on the temps. 54 to 58 now. concord 54. a little cool for some. a little cool. tropical clouds from saturday have moved off. there's still some possibility it might move in here around wednesday but for inland temps, they'll warm up 80s to 9 0s. the biggest jump will probably be around wednesday or thursday. by the coast dealing with a lot of 60s. warmest will be inland or east bay. concord, antioch, vacaville. santa clara valley as well. still a west breeze. upper 80s to low 90s for some. today is kind of that transition day. 60s, 70s coast and bay. a little warmer tuesday. maybe some partly cloudy skies on wednesday. after that it clears. does look like the hot epps days will be thursday and friday -- hottest days will be thursday and friday. we're coming up on our 5:00 hour. new concerns this morning when it comes to our state roads and
