7:01 am
we'll tell you more mornings on 2 starts now. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning to you. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it is monday august 6th. a huge traffic problem in the east bay. we're hearing delays reaching an hour sal? >> that's right. that's because of this crash on northbound 238 at 880. this is at the point where a lot of people have to get on to either southbound or northbound 880 from 238. it appears just from first look that a car was caught in between two big rigs. that car for a while was wedged underneath the first truck and one person was killed as a result of this crash. 238 is down to one lane. now, the freeway is very, very slow. 238, but also 580. a lot of people use 238 from
7:02 am
580 to get on to 880, and this morning look at that backup. it is stretching for miles and miles and as tori mentioned some people have been waiting for an hour in this backup. 580 is backed up into the dublin grade and people are driving in slow traffic from as far back as dublin now on this crash. this is terrible news. you may want to consider using b.a.r.t. or going the long ways around which would be 680 down to fremont. i would not recommend using westbound 580. in fact, if you don't have enough gas in your car you could become a stalled vehicle out there, so just put the trip off if you can. use an alternate route. if you have to go you'll be waiting for a long time to get out of here. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. we're also following breaking news from oakland's china town neighborhood. one person is dead after a robbery attempt at a marijuana
7:03 am
grow house. ktvu tara mother yourty was first on the scene. >> good morning tara. >> good morning. we just learned that one of the intruders shot and killed a dog when they entered the house that you see behind me on 7th 7th street. and then they turned the gun on the caretaker of this marijuana grow house. that caretaker has been detained for questioning. police say he shot and killed one of the three men that tried to, they believe, steal marijuana around quarter to five this morning. the other two suspects ran away and police are not sure if they're armed or not. police have located the caretakers weapon and another gun they believe belonged to one of the suspects. >> upon arrival they found one person deceased on scene. they detained one individual that was inside the house, and right now we're trying to evaluate if this is a home invasion robbery in which the homeowner defended himself or if this is strictly an aggressor.
7:04 am
>> the shooting happened at the home on 7th street between webster and harrison. police initial liquorly -- homicide is just arrived and the coroner hasn't been called yet. we understand that the body inside the home here is that of a man but we don't know how old he is. police believe the grow house was legal. the paperwork and documents seem to be in order. we're going to stay on top of this story and let you know more information as it becomes available to us. we're live in oakland. thank you tara. 7:04. the chp says two babies are among eight people injured in a single car crash in the east bay overnight. the accident happened shortly before 1:00 in the morning. the driver of the suv somehow lost control of his vehicle, flipped over, and crashed. the eight victims suffered moderate to minor injuries. chp is still trying to
7:05 am
determine what led up to the crash. >> time is 7:40 0á 4. three firefighters were hurt battling a late night fire at car repair shop in campbell. matt keller is at the scene to tell us what we know and what the investigators are saying. >> as the sun comes up you can get a better idea of how disastrous this fire could have been. you can see that the am coe is in the middle of several other auto repair shops. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to any of the other buildings. firefighters got the call just after 11 last night. they found a fire on the back wall of the aamco. they had to cut a hole in the door to get inside and a hole in the roof to let the heat and smoke out. the owner of the building next door told me the fire could have been much worse and had the possibility of spreading easily. >> a lot of flammable things, fluids, liquids, gas. it doesn't much to make it go.
7:06 am
>> two firefighters were injured biophage debris and a third suffered smoke inhalation. one is still being evaluated. in the past half hour we've seen the lights go back on here. the owner also told me he plans on opening for business today as usual. reporting live in campbell matt keller ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05, nasa is celebrating the biggest hurdle in the 2- year adventure of the mars rover named curiosity. scientists at the southern california home base of the mars mission exploded into the cheers when they knew the rover had arrived safely on the surface on the planet, began sending back black and white photos of its landing location almost immediately. the white house also was thrilled with the news. >> there's a 1-ton automobile sized piece of american

to seeing the first color photos from curiosity on mars. they're expected sometime in the next few days. >> now, we have much more coverage of the mars rover landing on our channel 2 web site. you can watch the nasa scientists celebrating and high fiving and also learn more about what curiosity took with it to mars. it's on the mars rover tab right at ktvu.com. it is 7:07 and we want to check in with sal. a terrible start to the monday commute, sal. especially in san leandro. >> this crash happened on 238 at 580. there was a car that somehow wedged itself in between two big rigs. the driver of that car did not survive. we watched them getting that person out. we also saw the wreckage of the car being taken away, and it was a horrible mess as you might imagine, a car being stuck between two moving big rigs, and now this traffic backup. that's 238, and on the left is 580. now, if you happen to get yourself to this point, you
7:09 am
want to get yourself on the 580, but the problem is 580 itself is backed up into the dublin k and it's backed up all the way out to dublin. this is a huge, huge, backup, and you can see it's not even moving really, and this is because one lane is still blocked down 238 at 880. now, they have been making some progress with that, but the lane is still closed. it's been closed since about 5:20 this morning. we're going on two hours of this closure, and it's having a major effect. and remember, big rigs cannot use 580. they all have to stay on 238, and that's just making things worse. let's move along and take a look at the south bay here. the traffic in santa clara valley is slow. southbound 280, a crash. northbound 101 slowing in sunnyvale. i want to move up to the 238 freeway. we already talked about this so i want to move across to the peninsula here. 101, that looks pretty good if you're driving to the airport.
