same unit that burst into flames on monday evening. ken pritchett explains what is going on there. good afternoon, ken. >> reporter: i spoke with the fire battalion chief michael banks and he was on his way out. they did call richmond fire and requested four engines and a truck after the residual fire, burning at the unit, expanded. we will look at video from news chopper 2. you can see firefighters putting additional water on the unit. sam singer told me 15 minutes ago, the fire is pushing all along, the flame about the size of a basketball. but for some reason, the size of the fire grew. he couldn't tell me how much it expanded. chevron said it was unexpected and we know there is residual fuel in the pipe that leaked. because of regulations, personnel cannot approach too close to address the fire or

assess the situation. one reason why they were called to the scene. according to chevron, despite the basketball sized flame growing in size, they said the fire remains understand control. you saw some smoke from the video from news chopper 2 but from the vantage point, just outside of the chevron refinery, we can't see smoke from our vantage point and nor can we smell anything that would indicate anything is burning. so apparently, the fire that is burning there, while it has grown to size, remains relatively small. we will continue to talk to chevron to get more information about what appears to be a fair up here at the refinery. ken pritchett, channel 2 news. they are not mad, but they are considering legal action.

ktvu's tara moriarty explains what they are doing. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: there are lines out the door of the attorney's offices. we are at mcdonald avenue. they showed up at last night's community meeting. they are looking to sous chef ron and they want chevron to know that they are angry. >> you people have to understand you are putting the poison out here killing us. it is not just happening here, is it happening in your neighborhood? no, it is not. >> reporter: they perceive it is the company's failure to notify them and the secretaries there have handed out 2,000 forms for people wanting to sous chef ron. more than 900 people showed up, have showed up at area hospitals complaints of shortness of breath, itchy, watery eyes and other symptoms.

this one lives less than 1,000 feet away from the refinery and she has asthma. >> it comes over our house and stuff. we are effected by it. my eyes are still hurting and burning. my first time outside suns it happened. >> reporter: chevron has apologized to neighbors but air quality techs have shown the level for 23 petroleum pollutants were safe. we spoke to an official on the phone and they said folks who did live close to the refinery did breathe in a particulate but it is currently in the sierra. we did speak to some people on line. they say they have no medical insurance and they want chevron to cover that. and the latest fire, they say here we go again. we never know when a fire is breaking out at the refinery and we want to make sure

something long term is done about it. >> thank you, tara. chevron has provided the specific timeline leading up to the refineary fire. the chief said two hours before, emergency crews knew there was a problem. at 4:15. they saw a small leak coming from a 8-inch pipe. they started stripping away insulation and that released a flammable vapor. employees evacuated and shortly after that, the fire ignited. the investigation is ongoing. chevron has a special claims phone number set up for community members. it will take full responsibility for all legitimate property expenses related to the refinery. the number is on the screen it is (866)260-7881. analysts said we will see a jump in gasoline prices. as early as yesterday, they

report add 25-cent a gallon rise in the wholesale price. the triple a fuel gauge reports that a one to 2-cent increase at the pumps in the bay area since yesterday. a rise of five to 7 cents a gallon from a week ago. >> when we have an unforeseen outage, you can't get a new shipment that was already scheduled into three or four weeks. when we do have these sorts of outages, we see a price fight. >> the financial loss from the richmond fire could be made up by the higher prices from the refinery in southern california. we created a special tab with all the refinery fire coverage. you will find it on the front page at ktvu.com. >> people in martinez started the day with a shelter in place warning. this time it was a false alarm. they went off and automated

calls went off. they reacted quickly and minutes later. they believe the refinery triggered the alarm during the test. it happened two days after the refinery fire that did trigger a legitimate vehicle in place. news chopper two caught sight of this fire at 11:00 a.m. one person was in the house and got out safely. no one was injured. the fire was contained to two rooms and the cause sounds investigation. one close call on a runway is one too many. san francisco international airport has the worse records for close calls in the country. alex savadge joins us -- savidge joins us live. >> reporter: a spokesman tells me it is similar to a street

. the highway patrol is investigating a head on train reaction crash. it happened around 6:30 near tracy boulevard. four people were hurt. medical helicopter landed at the scene to transport some of the injured. it closed both of the directions of the roadways for an hour. we learned more about a tragic motorcycle accident t happened just after midnight and portola avenue. they confirmed the identity of the victim as 30-year-old daniel vanderhooven, they believe he was going too fast and slammed into a wall. >> the motorcyclist passed her at a high of speed and as she

this is the same flame that was burning at the damaged unit that caught fire. small flame about the size of a basketball. you can see now from chopper two. fire personnel out there. and putting water on the unit. here is what changed. >> it is the small basketball sized plame that expanded. just the last 15 minutes. they told me it was a second fire that was extinguished almost immediately. it is not the original fire. but a small fire. and this was a second fire that according to chevron was distinguished immediately and it appears the second fire occurred or took place in the same damaged retuneary unit. and that is where we see right now from news chopper two. firefighters putting water on that location. now, chevron does not have additional information about the fire other than it occurred and it was extinguished
