refinery unit has been pressurized, eliminating the risk of any large fires, but they say it's possible small fires could pop up. as of now, there are no fires burning here. >> as we went into extinguish the second fire, the opportunity arose to extinguish the primary fire. at this time, all fires have been extinguished. >> reporter: this is video from monday's fire. chevron says that was caused by a small leak in a pipe, an eight-inch pipe at refinery unit 4, that two hours after they found that leak, after they detected that leak, that leak rapidly extended and found an ignition source. as for the damage to that unit, chevron says while the fires are out, all of the fires at this point, they say that the unit is still too damaged for them to get in close to assess the damage or determine what it will take to repair and put that refinery unit back on

line. in richmond, ktvu channel 2 news. in our next half air, ktvu will obtain the air quality report following the fire. what was in the air that people were breathing and just how hazardous is it to their health. >> we don't know what the impact will be on gas prices but we've already seen a bump in prices at the pump in the last 24 hours. statewide, the average price of regular gas is 3.88, up two cents a gallon from credit. in san francisco, gas prices rose a penny to $3.94 and prices rose two cents a gallon in san jose and oakland. a false alarm sent out warning messages in a refinery this morning. a worker meant to inform the county health department of a level 0 problem, a minor operational glitch, and instead reported a more serious level 3

problem. the county sent out shelter-in- place warnings by phone and by cable tv. it quickly rescinded the warning by sending out new messages. breaking news now happying in san mateo county. there's a fire burning in the small community of ladera. what you see here is a helicopter dropping water on the flames near on area that's already been burned. we're talking about an area west of alpine road. we've seen the helicopter make a series of drops, essentially dropping it on the flame. news chopper 2 is giving us an idea of where it is burning. this picture here does give you an idea of the terrain that the fire is burning in. it looks fairly rural and there's a lot of yellow, dry grass around. there is also some pretty high- end home misthe area.

you see road there cutting through the burned area. at this point, we're working to find out what started the fire and if anyone may have been injured as a result. the entire bay area is seeing a few very hot days so we'll talk to mark about that in just a moment. a fire is burning in the community of ladera. meanwhile, a car crash up in marin county sparked another traffic. it knocked out power to thousands of people. this fire happened on northbound highway 101. a car went out of control and hit a power pole that set off a grass fire that burned through about 40 acres before crews got it contained. the chp closed all northbound lanes of highway 101 for about an hour because of smoke and

poor visibility. pg&e has restored electricity now to more than 1200. an arrest of a number of demonstrators in california and montgomery streets. a crew tells us about two dozen people were arrested. janitors marched in the financial drirkts opposing a new contract that they say will increase their health care costs by as much as $600 a month. firefighters took about 15 minutes to put out a house fire in el sobrante. one person was in the house and got out safely. investigators say they believe a fire early this morning at a home in santa rosa was accidental. it cost $150,000 damage to the

house in sonoma county. a man visiting a neighbor saw the flames and helped rescue a 58-year-old woman and her 12- year-old grandson from inside. a woman whose husband was killed in a notorious murder- for-hire case here in the bay area has herself died in a car crash. michelle achille is being remembered tonight as a wonderful lady. >> reporter: what people here in los gatos say is michelle stood strong in the trial and the aftermath. now another tragedy for a family and a town that have been through so much. at first, authorities thought they were just responding to a brushfire. instead, they found the burned car and body 150 feet down in a ravine. they believe the driver simply lost control. >> we do have indications that speed was a factor, unable to negotiate a turn. >> reporter: the victim, 54-

year-old michelle achille was the widow of mark achille. his murder gripped the town in 2008. ultimately three men went to prison for arranging the hit. the owners of the coffee shot remember the family and what happened to them. >> it definitely gripped the whole town. i mean, everybody knew mark. he was a great guy. his wife, a wonderful lady. >> reporter: and now this. news of the accident spread quickly around town. though the couple had been separated, they remained close. >> this woman had gone through so much, and that's really sad. i feel for her children. >> i couldn't imagine anything worse, especially for the kids. losing one parent in such a tragic manner and then to lose another parent in an equally tragic event. it's mind-boggling. >> reporter: chp says identification had been a challenge because the fire

burned the license plate and vin number right off the car. they say their investigation into the crash is ongoing. live in los gatos, ann ruben, ktvu channel 2 news. alameda county prosecutors say a 57-year-old man was legally growing and selling medical marijuana. as many as three suspects tried to rob the man's duplex in chinatown and the man shot and killed one robber, a 20-year- old san francisco man. police are still searching for the other suspect. we have a tragic story to report out of fairfield where a toddler drowned on clipper ship drive. a great grandparent was watching the two-year-old child and thought he was asleep, but the child woke up and got out of the house. his 12-year-old sister found him unresponsive in the pool. police say the pool was fenced

but the gate was damaged and had been removed. 31-year-old daniel vanderhoffin was going too fast, lost control and then slammed into a wall. a witness reported seeing him driving at a high rate of speed. this is a photo on facebook from several years ago of the brothers. a san mateo county judge denied a bail request today for accused child molester william ayres. the judge says he can't rule on bail for the 80-year-old psychiatrist until his mental competency had been determined. state psychiatrists say he faked dementia and is well enough for retrial. his first trial ended in a hung jury in 2009. he was charged with nine counts for molesting patients during the 1990's. a competency hearing is set for

>> reporter: a grand opening celebration is scheduled for august 18. in san jose, matt keller, ktvu channel 2 news. authorities released new details today about a man who shot and killed six people at a sikh temple in wisconsin. police say they wounded wade michael page but then he turned his gun on himself. they also say they believe he acted alone. >> we have identified no one else responsible for the shooting other than him. we also have not clearly defined a motive at this point. >> authorities arrested page's ex-girlfriend after they went to her home to question her but say there was no evidence she was involved in the sikh temple killings. they plan to hold candlelight vigils tonight to remember the victims there in wisconsin. san jose sikh temple has a

www.ktvu.com and click on the weekend extra tab. pg&e reported a drop in its earnings. they spent money on pipeline repairs and legal extensions related to the san bruno pipeline explosion. they spent another $80 million on claims from people affected by the blast. a collision injured four people and closed the road in both directions this morning. it happened west of discovery bay near tracy boulevard. a medical helicopter was used to transport two of the people injured. highway 4 was closed for more than an hour. the legislature's joint audit committee wants to know if the fees from california's specialty license plates are being spent properly. thatment dos after reports that there was -- that comes after reports that there was little oversight of the money raised since the program began 20 years ago. this would be the first

work to do to improve its salmon hatcheries. the agencies are recommending hatcheries mark every salmon bred to its origin can be braced. it may come as no surprise but temperatures last month set a new record high. federal scientists say the average temperature for the lower 48 states was 77.6 degrees in july. that brings the previous record of 77.4 -- that breaks the previous record of 77.4 degrees for the month of july. the first seven months of the year were also the warmest on record. tomorrow is a spare the air day in the san francisco area. the alert was issued because

concentrations of ozone are expected to reach dangerous levels. high levels of ozone pollution are harmful for young children, seniors and people with respiratory and heart conditions. we've covered a couple of grass fires here in the bay area. you were saying it's not so much the wind today but the heat that's out there. >> yes. the heat and also just the time of year. things really begin to dry out, and over the next three months, that will be a concern, but especially over the next few days. you probably know, with the temperature change for today, a few spots approaching 100 degrees. here's the live storm tracker. we have mostly clear skies out there across a good portion of the region. that's a fog bank to our south and west. that will be a factor. and the entire bay area is not heating up because we still have an on-shore wind with winds gusting to 26 miles an hour at the golden gate bridge. current numbers just updated. it is hot.

tabs on users. president obama ripped into mitt romney today during a campaign appearance in colorado. he spoke at a rally in grand junction. he called mitt romney's plan fairy dust. he said it will not help create jobs or help the middle class. republican challenger mitt romney today took a poke at california, comparing our state to the financially strapped nation of greece. romney made these remarks while visiting a cornfield in iowa. he says the u.s. should do a better job managing its debt or it could end up like greece or california. he said californians know a thing or two about debt. aids say romney was only joking. naturalists are excited about the annual return in the past few days of the endangered leatherback turtle off the coast between monterey and the bay area.

5. it was an ominous sight that sent hundreds of people to east bay hospitals, that enormous cloud of black smoke drifting from the chevron refinery in richmond. but just how dangerous was it? there is no doubt breathing smoke is bad for your health, but how much of that smoke actually got to the thousands of residents on the ground? john has been looking into this and has details. >> reporter: some residents told us even know they can smell the smoke 48 hours after the fire. more than 2,000 people turn out just at this one law office to file health claims. >> it is scary, and my eyes are watery, my nose was running. and i was scared for my kids. my son has asthma. >> it was like an hour or maybe a couple hours after, my chest started hurting. >> reporter: last night,

at the state capitol, a call is going out for a detailed audit of mental health funding from proposition 63. it comes from two republican members and follows an investigative report by the associated press last month. voters passed prop 63 back in 2004 to pay for mental health services but the ap reports says tens of millions of dollars have gone to things like yoga classes and horseback riding. a potentially explosive discovery was made, old sticks of dynamite dated from 1951. the bomb squad was called in

other workers from the san francisco bay's ninth district court are moving forward with a controversial trip to hawaii. scott mcfarland has details of the trip. >> reporter: they will not cancel the trip this weekend. we're told 500 federal workers, judges in particular, are being whisked away to the luxurious hyatt in maui. the trip organized by the ninth circuit court system, weeks ago some senators say they were outraged by the expenses an urged organizers to cancel or scale back the trip. but in a statement today, the court said it will not. a court executive tells me the trip cannot been cancelled at this late date without enormous penalties to the circuit. and in hindsight, had we fore seen the nation's fiscal situation years ago, we would
