hayward police are investigating the discovery of a body this morning in an industrial area just north of the approach to the san mateo bridge. someone called police around 7:30 to report the body of a man in the parking lot of a business called eternity floors on foley avenue. investigators say that the man had a gunshot wound to the upper chest but, right now, they are not sure if he kills himself or if someone else shot him. police in santa cruz are looking for suspects in the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy last night. ktvu's matt keller has been covering the story all morning and has this update. >> the morning started early for homicide detectives looking for evidence in the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy walking home from the

boardwalk. daylight allowed them a closer look at possible damage and stray bullets from the crime that happened at about 8:00 last night on san lorenzo boulevard. >> the guy was telling me that he was up at the corner and he heard six shots and he said it was either a .22 or a .38. >> reporter: detectives believe that the homicide is related to the nearby gang violence. witnesses told detectives of two vehicles possibly involved in the shooting with two or three men wearing dark hooted sweat shirts. at about the same time, 12 1/2 miles away, another crime scene was set up. a car was found on fire off of larkin road. the vehicle was badly burned. it could take some time to determine if this vehicle was related to the homicide. as for the shooting victim, police say he was a gang member and had come into contact with officers several times for

loitering and gang-related activities. >> the officers that contacted him certainly made the effort to steer him away from that path. he was immersed in that culture and fell prey to it. >> reporter: police say that there is no border for the violence and apparently no age limit. the labor department today reported better than expected news on the nation's jobless rate. the number of initial jobless claims slipped to 361,000 last week, down 6000 from the week before. new figures indicate the number of u.s. homes entering foreclosure jumped in july. according to real estate tracking firm realty track. the number of homes with initial default notices rose last month compared to last year. that comes as banks repossessed 21% fewer homes compared to july 2011 and another report

showed more americans are staying current on their home payments than any time in the last three years. and the commerce department had some unexpected good news. the u.s. trade deficit fell to its lowest level in 18 months. the u.s. imported nearly $43 billion worth of goods, more than it exported. a steep drop in the price of oil helped and exports rose to a record high of $185 billion. president obama is spending a second day campaigning in colorado. this morning, mr. obama appeared at a rally in pueblo. the president accused his republican challenger mitt romney of wanting to raise taxes on the middle class and opposing tax credits for wind energy. yesterday, mr. obama focused on women's issues. for his part, romney has spent the past two days raising campaign funds in new york and new jersey. he left a fundraiser on park avenue this morning.
