. >> this huge war memorial was recently damaged by vandals, but a group of volunteers made quick work of the repair project. what motivated them? . good evening. i'm ken wayne. heather holmes is off tonight. we're learning more about a possible cause of the fire at chevron refinery in richmond. investigators are focusing on a section of pipe. patty lee is in richmond with what investigators have learned so far. >> reporter: the focus right now is on an 8-inch section of pipe that is in the crude unit of the refinery here. now, investigators still need to remove and examine that pipe, but this afternoon they told me they have already learned some surprising new information. the federal probe into the refinery fire at chevron is in the early stages, but today, investigators told us they have learned that about a dozen workers narrowly escaped injury. >> when it intensified, these

workers were actually engulfed in a flammable vapor cloud. >> reporter: a pipe that may have leaked could be the source of the blaze, according to investigators. the pipe is adjacent to a corroded section of pipe investigated last year. investigators say a look at industry practices shows a slard with the avon refinery fire in martinez back in 1999. >> we focus maintenance efforts on a running unit, ie, a leak occurred and a decision was made to go in and surveyor perhaps attempt to repair without shutting the unit down. >> reporter: chevron says it's too early to make any assumptions. >> i think any comparison to any other incident is just too premature right now. >> reporter: chevron is conducting its own internal investigation while cooperating with four others concurrently. its other focus, richmond residents. today, hundreds more stood in

suffered serious injuries this afternoon when he was struck by a train at the glenn park bart station. bart hasn't yet said how the person ended up on the tracks. the incident forced many trains going toward the east bay to turn back. trains from southern stations ran through without stopping. in oakland, the highway patrol is investigating an officer-involved incident that killed a pedestrian. the fatal crash happened last night, as the officer was riding his motorcycle on mcarthur boulevard. the highway patrol says the victim was running across several lanes of traffic and the officer could not stop in time to prevent the crash. the 43-year-old woman from hayward was pronounced dead at the hospital. the officer was treated at the hospital for his injuries and released. oakland police are investigating a double shooting that killed a man and injured a second person. police say just before 6:00 a.m., a street fight broke out on birch street near 89th avenue. someone opened fire, killing a 22-year-old man and hitting a 24-year-old man in the leg.

the injured victim was hospitalized. according to police, both victims lived in the area and they may be related. no arrests have been made. now to the race for the white house, today marks a new chapter in the presidential campaign, as gop candidate mitt romney announced his vice presidential pick, wisconsin congressman paul ryan. ryan is best known for his attempt to overhaul medicare and his desire to cut trillions from the federal budget. christina mulcher reports. >> reporter: republican presidential candidate mitt romney and new vp running mate paul ryan wasted no time campaigning together. the two hit the trail at an event in ashland, virginia, the second stop in a four-day, four-state bus tour. >> why don't we get rid of the bad news first, okay? president obama is the president of the united states and the good news is on november 6th, he he won't be any longer. >> reporter: earlier saturday morning in norfolk, virginia, romney announced his pick for

of tehran. the usgs says the first was a magnitude 6.4, the second a 6.3, striking 11 minutes later. iranian state television says 180 people are dead and more than 1300 are injured. it has been a deadly weekend in afghanistan for u.s. servicemen and afghan police. an afghan police officer today opened fire at a check point in the southern part of that country, killing at least 10 of his colleagues. he was killed in ensuing gun fight. that attack came after six u.s. service members died friday in two separate attacks. a civilian worker at an air base in helmand province shot and killed three marines friday night. early friday morning, three other marines who were part of special forces, died after an afghan police commander invited them to breakfast. among the dead in that attack is a bay area native, 29-year-old captain matthew minukian graduated from st. francis high school in mountain view. both his parents are bay area judges, his mother at the state

court of appeals; his father, a superior court judge in santa clara county. now to a story we first told you about last week out of lafayette, where dozens of crosses at a war memorial were vandalized. ktvu is live at the memorial, where volunteers came together today to fix them up. >> reporter: ken, these crosses have stood near the lafayette bart station for the last six years. while they need occasional maintenance, today a group of volunteers had to come out to replace some that had been intentionally damaged. a hot day in lafayette was no match for the dedication of these volunteers. >> it's nothing what these folks did. >> reporter: they toiled in the sun for hours, digging, painting, and installing new crosses at this memorial for america's recent casualties of war. >> just really gives them a more, deeper sense of what the true cost of the war is and what it means to have someone, especially a young person

sacrifice their life for their country. >> reporter: a week ago, someone vandalized 70 crosses. >> once a month, they come and repair the crosses and i thought i would come. and when i saw the vandalism, i just thought that would be double reason to do it. >> reporter: although these volunteers believe it was bored young people causing trouble, they were still offended by the destruction. >> why would anybody come and destroy it? i think it's just some stupid teenage vandalism, i guess. confused people. but that's not going to stop us. >> reporter: this display has been damaged before. shortly after it was erected as an antiwar monument in 2006, opponents desecrated it and some tense confrontations followed. >> you have that right! >> reporter: now it seems to have gained acceptance aprimarily a tribute to the lives lost in iraq and afghanistan. >> but it's especially good now to remind us that, you know, the dogs of war are chomping again. there's a strong contingent that wants to get us into another war with iraq. >> reporter: 4000 crosses stand

here. while the sign shows more than 6500 war dead. there isn't enough room to put anymore in this place. live in lafayette, ktvu, channel 2news. summer heat continued to blanket much of the bay area today. in livermore, youngsters got a chance to cool off a little bit at a downtown fountain that was made with kids in mind. it's the third day in a row temperatures have soared above 100 degrees in livermore, where the mercury today topped out at 105 degrees. today was also the third spare the air day for the bay area, but there is no air advisory called for tomorrow. not quite as hot in the south bay, but still pretty warm. temperatures in san jose today peaked at 89 degrees. right now, it's cooled down a little bit, 82 as we look at a live picture of san jose. coming up in 8 minutes, mark will tell us how long this heat sticks around, in his complete bay area forecast. a wildfire in plumas fire

. the highway patrol is investigating two fatal crashes that happened minutes apart last night. at about 9:40 p.m., a mini van struck and killed a pedestrian on interstate 280 if ocean and geneva avenues in san francisco. the pedestrian was reportedly walking a dog in the middle of the freeway. police shut down all northbound lanes at one point and traffic was backed up for hours. a few minutes earlier, a driver in contra costa county was killed when she allegedly made an illegal u-turn. the crash happened outside brentwood on vasco. the driver of a purple geo tracker crossed the double lines during the turn. a red toyota camera collided with her car. the 30-year-old woman from san jose died at the scene.

another victim from san leandro was hospitalized with minor injuries. a fire overnight at an east bay apartment complex caused anxious moments for some residents. it started around 10:45 last night in concord on argyle drive near highway 242. several detached garages and storage units burned, sending flames into the air. there were no reports of injuries and no word yet on what started that fire. . now to our continuing coverage in the race for the white house. republican candidate mitt romney announced his choice for running mate this morning. ktvu's allie rasmus gives us first impressions from bay area voters. >> going to be the next vice president of the united states! discouraging. >> reporter: as chairman of the house budget committee, ryan released a budget plan, including tax cuts, steep cuts to social programs, and a medicare overhaul. >> the medicare, i need to take a look at a little bit closer. you know, i certainly don't want to see any, any drastic cuts to that. >> reporter: even so, this bay area romney supporter says he's happy with the choice. >> if we're going to get things in order, we got to get a, definitely a fiscal conservative. >> reporter: other bay area voters disagree. >> ultra conservative, you know. wants to cut the budget to the point where i think it harms the disenfranchised. >> reporter: the romney campaign says as president, romney would create his own budget plan. >> i think the democrats will be happy, just because now they have some fodder to go after. >> reporter: within hours of the announcement, the obama campaign released this ad, focusing on the ryan budget. >> put on a very comprehensive plan, rewriting the healthcare system, medicare, social security, our entire tax system.

replaced, because the current system is focused on curiosity's landing mechanisms. the updated software will focus on the rover's day-to-day science activities. here on earth, it's time for the annual perseid meteor shower. this year, nasa has an app for that. you can download an app that let's you count the meteors you see, note their brightness, then send information to nasa scientists. astronomers say we can expect as many as 100 shooting stars an hour. and the best time to watch is right before dawn. so if you're going to get up really early, mark, are we going to be able to see it? depends where the fog is. >> yeah, that will be the big challenge with the fog, also the city lights. you want to get away from the city lights. as you can see behind me, the fog making a comeback near the coast, moving over san francisco and heading into san francisco bay. here's our live camera out in the distance there, and the fog will be invading the bay as we head into the overnight hours. right now, as you can see in the

live storm tracker 2, you can pick out the current pattern. as we showed you, a few patches heading into the region right now. that will continue to filter into at least a few neighborhoods late tonight, into early tomorrow morning. once again, as far as the perseid meteor shower it, peaks late tonight, early tomorrow morning, to the east sky. we mentioned up to a hundred meteors per hour, that is the peak under perfect conditions. more realistically, 40 to 70 meteors per hour. back in the bay area closer to land, we do have hot temperatures once again, the third day of triple-digit heat inland. hottest temperatures of the week out toward fairfield, livermore. but the other extreme, pretty cold once again toward pacifica, san francisco. only 66 degrees. for tonight, forecast headlines, we do have warm temperatures inland, but fog for the coast and for the bay. tomorrow, cooling begins, but cooler does not mean cool. we'll still have hot numbers inland. we'll rein force the cooling trend into next week, monday, tuesday and into wednesday.

here's a look at the current numbers for the 6:00 hour and still in the upper 90s out toward fairfield and livermore. oakland, 72. santa rosa and sonoma county, 86 degrees. this area of high pressure producing the very hot temperatures inland. bit of a temperature shift. that kicks in by monday, tuesday, into wednesday as we increase that onshore breeze. that will be bumping up by tuesday and into wednesday. gradual cooling for that timeframe, but for tomorrow, hottest locations once again around 95 to 100 degrees. but it will be a little bit cooler for the second half of your weekend. here we go with our forecast model, showing you dense fog around the coast and probably a few patches into the bay, into the afternoon hours. patchy fog for the coast. there we go with the upper 90s to right around 100 degrees well inland. but most areas coming down on average, about 3 to 5 degrees from today's highs. 98 in fairfield. still a few triple digits out toward antioch, livermore, brentwood. oakland, mid-70s. san jose tops out in the upper
