wisconsin tomorrow for a homecoming rally for ryan. live in washington i'm jennifer davis, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on congressman ryan. he served 13 years in the house and currently heads the budget committee. his bill containing drastic cuts in the federal budget failed in the house. ryan is a catholic and is against abortion under any circumstances. the 42-year-old is the father of three. his wife janna was a tax attorney in washington, d.c. when they met. president obama previously blasted congressman ryan's signature budget plan during a speech back in march. >> it is a trojan horse disguised as deficit reduction plans and it's really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country. it is thinly veiled social darwinism. the obama campaign today released a statement saying, "romney tapped in ryan someone

the highway patrol are investigating a crash that killed a woman hit by a chp motorcycle. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live with what investigators are found so far. >> reporter: ken, the sergeant who hit the woman is now on paid-leave. we're told just like any officer involved in a shooting would be. at this point the chp says there is no indication that he did anything wrong, but there are still a lot of questions about exactly what happened. we found more people walking across the middle of mcarthur avenue in west oakland, the same place a woman was killed when the highway patrol says she ran in front of a chp motorcycle. >> the sergeant attempted to evade, but it was one of those things he can could not evade the pedestrian. >> reporter: the pedestrian, a 45-year-old woman was transported to the hospital, but did not survive. chp sergeant was not seriously injured. >> how fast was the sergeant going?

>> approximately 30 miles is the speed limit on west macarthur boulevard. that is the statement he gave us. >> when i heard the officer was only going 30, i said that couldn't be true. >> reporter: long time west oakland resident did not witness this crash, but he and others tell us that they see pedestrians motorists taking chances here. >> people cross the street here. >> reporter: cars go pretty fast? >> yeah, the highway patrol always goes fast through here. >> reporter: the chp says the woman who was hit was wearing dark clothing and not in the crosswalk, but it's not clear why she stepped into traffic. >> were they impaired or a suicide attempt? those are the kind of them we investigate. >> reporter: the sergeant was on duty at the time of the crash, but about to take the on-ramp to 580 to go home. people at the scene said they had seen the woman before. she has not yet been

identified. also last night a driver in contra costa county was killed after allegedly making an illegal u-turn. police say the driver of a purple geotracker crossed double yellow lines during the turn. a red toyota camry collided with her car. the 30-year-old woman from san josi died at scene. another victim was hospitalized with minor injuries. new video of a fatal accident on interstate 580. investigators say the driver swerved to cross all lanes of traffic to take the tracy cutoff. officers say the car pub out and hit a light pole. a chp spokesman says the two men in the front seat are alive because they wore seatbelts. the man in the backseat who was not wearing one died at scene. a san francisco bart

station was shut down, causing major delays after a man was struck by an incoming train. a bart spokesman says the train operator sought man on the tracks and tried to stop, but says there wasn't enough time. >> it's not clear why the person was in the trackway. bart police are investigating and hopefully they are able to interview the person, should the injuries permit that. >> officials have not released the celebrity of the victim's injuries. the accident forced many trains going to the east bay to turn back. trains from stations south of glen park ran through without stopping. oakland police are investigating a double shooting that killed a man and injured a second. police say just before 6:00 a.m. a street fight broke out on birch street near 89th avenue. someone opened fire killing a 22-year-old man and hitting a 24-year-old man in the leg. the victim was taken to the hospital. the one who was injured, according to police, both victims lived in the area and may be related. no arrests have been made.

federal investigators are focusing their attention on a pipe at the chevron refinery in richmond. as ktvu's patti lee report theorize looking into what caused monday's big fire. >> reporter: the u.s. chemical safety board says a dozen chevron workers were lucky to escape the fire without serious injury. >> these workers were actually engulfed in a flammable vapor cloud. >> reporter: they say the cause may be a pipe that leaked and say it may have been adjacent to a section of corroded pipe that was replaced last september. the plan is to inspect the pipe at an independent lab. investigators say a look at industry practices shows a similarity with the tosco alone fire in martinez back in 1999. >> they both involved maintenance efforts on a running unit, i.e., a leak occurred and a survey or attempt to repair without

shutting the unit down. >> reporter: chevron is conducting its own internal investigation while correspondenting with four cooperating with four others and focused on richmond residents. today's hundreds of people filed claims against chevron. >> chevron spokeswoman says it's looking at longer term plans, but like the investigation, the details will be revealed in time. in richmond, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on the number of people who have filed claims against chevron. according to the oil company as of noon today, 4936 people have filed claims over the phone with chevron. the company says it has taken another 660 claims in person at

the community service. bay area prices have jumped since the chevron fire, today triple-a average rose more than $0.20 in just the past week. some bay area fire crews have headed up to plumas county to battle an out of control wildfire of it's grown more than 30,000 acres. the contra costa protection area has sent fire crews north to help in the firefight. despite that the fire remains less than 10% contained. the inland neighbors in the bay area spend another day wrapped up in the heatwave. it's the third day in a row that temperatures have soared above 100 in livermore are the mercury topped out at 105 degrees. today was also the third spare-

the-air day for the bay area, but there is no air advisory called for tomorrow. meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now. >> ken, a temperature range of over 40 degrees across parts of bay area from 60 coastside. as you head inland the excessive heat around 100 to 105 degrees. vacaville. and what is causing all of this? a big area of high pressure kind of nosing back into california. the sinking air is warming air and has been warming since basically wednesday into thursday and as a result, triple digit heat in the forecast. this high has to weaken to bring the cooler temperatures. coming up we'll let you know what when that move back into your forecast area. for more on bay area

. new at 10:00 is there excitement in the air in the north bay. the petaluma national little league team is heading to the national little league world series. cara liu is live in petaluma. >> reporter: ken this is one of the spots that people were watching the game and let me tell you this place went crazy as petaluma became one of eight teams to advance to the little league world series. petaluma national took the little league western regional championship. >> every kid who has played in game, this is their dream and kids that we know, we talked to, we played with, we had sleep evers with, they are there. >> reporter: craig jensen

knows most of the people. >> reporter: a hometown cheer glued to all six innings played in san bernardino tonight. >> i have lived here my whole life and just knowing that people see petaluma, california, that is where i'm from. kind of coomb fans called the win bittersweet, saying that the game was won on a questionable call, but they say this is a talented group with a good work ethic and they know how to plays a team and they deserve to go to the little league world series. >> i'm so proud of these boys, i could cry. they are just there -- they are phenomenal boys. >> reporter: and i spoke with one of the coaches by phone just a few minutes ago and he tells me that the kids are really excited and the coaches and parents are just a little numb, saying that everybody is happening so quickly.

beating death of tyler grande. 31-year-old anthony josi ruiz of vacaville was arrested on suspension of manslaughter. police say grande was beaten during a large party on july 4th on garden circle in vacaville. he never regained consciousness and was taken off life support. we're learning more about the plan accused of opening fire in a colorado movie theater killing 12 people and injuring 58 others. the university of the illinois released documents from the application to its neuroscience program. holmes wrote, "as we fascinated of the complexities of long last throughout seemingly arriving out of nowhere into streamless --." he decided to go to the university of colorado and dropped out of that program in june, a month before the shootings. first lady mish eel obama visited aurora hospitals thanking the staff for the care

of the victims of the shooting. mrs. obama met with the survivors. the first lady was set to attend a fund-raiser to her husband in denver tonight. a big rig accident in southern california meant some drivers were stuck in their vehicles in triple digit heat. it happened on highway 101 in calabasas, los angeles county. it blocked the road for hours backing up traffic for miles in both directions. there is no word on the condition of that driver. in fresno county a large fire has forced hundreds of people out of their homes tonight. 200 homes are under a mandatory evacuation order. the fire is burning northeast of fresno near the town of alberry. with the temperatures reaching 110 degrees, several firefighter were treated for heat-related injuries. the fire started a bit after

. panic and grief in northwestern iran has twin earthquakes leveled half a dozen villages and claimed the lives of at least 180 people, the u.s.g.s. say the larger of the quakes measured 6.4 and the second, 6.3 struck a few minutes later. tonight rescuers are searching for people trapped in the rubble. authorities are urging people to spend the night outside as more than 40 afternoon shocks rocked the area. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton is preparing for a worst-case scenario in soyia a chemical attack by the government of president bashar al-assad. >> that is a red line for the world.

fired into the air and used baton during clashes, but they denied the protesters were killed by their bullets. the muslims had taken to the streets to protest the killing of muslims in ethnic rioting in the northeast part of the country last month. >> we just spotted a massive hammerhead shark that is circling around him. >> a tv news helicopter found a man floating in the ocean after his boat sank. rescues he say he was treading water for about 20 hours before he was spotted. two other men were on the boat with him when it went down. one was rescued, but later died. the other is still missing. the rescued fishman was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. a massive dust storm rolled through parts of arizona today. here is what the haboob looked like in the phoenix area. you can see the massive clouds

. the highway patrol is investigating a fatal accident on interstate 280 in san francisco. last night a mini van struck and kill a pedestrian. the pedestrian was reportedly with a dog, but it's not clear yet whether the dog was hit. police shut down all northbound lanes at one point and traffic was backed up for hours. a lafayette hillside that is turned into a makeshift shrine for american soldiers was vandalized. as john sasaki, reports how hard-working volunteers went to repair the damage. >> reporter: a hot day in lafayette was no match for the dedication of

these volunteers they toiled in the sun for hours, digging, painting and installing new crosses at this memorial for america's recent casualties of war. >> it's just really gives them a more deeper sense of what the true cost of the war is, and what it means to have someone, especially a young person sacrifice their life for their country. a week ago someone vandalized 70 crosses. >> i thought i would come and when i saw the vandalism, i thought that would be a double reason to do it. >> reporter: although these volunteers believe it was bored young people causing trouble, they were still offended by the destruction. >> why would someone destroy it? just some stupid teenaged vandalism i guess. confused people. but that is not going to stop

suspected bank rob i is facing serious charges after police say he stole a police car and hit numerous vehicles and a pedestrian . it happened in santa barbara county. when the officers arrive on a suspected carjacking the man jumped into a police car and hit two parked trucks and a pedestrian. a passenger in the truck suffered serious injuries. the man was eventually arrested and is behind bars tonight. new at 10:00 a pleasant hill man braved the cold waters of lake tahoe for a solo swim to raise awareness of the strife in the african nation of congo. keris dahlkamp planned to to swim from south lake tahoe though king's beach, but after 11 hours he changed course just short of the finish line.

. astronomers say the skies will be filled with shooting stars as part of the annual perseids meteor shower. this year you can download an app to count the meteors you see and send that information to nasa scientists. astronomers say we should expect one shooting star a minute and best time to watch is just before dawn. and if you want to watch the meteor shower you want to get away from city lights and also the fog. dense fog has been a factor in the coast and pushing into the buy. there you can pick out the big

blanket of clouds moving into parts of san francisco. that is a layer of holt air above it and as a result it's compressing the marine layer and dropping visibilities. livermore right now checking in at 79 degrees, but here is the current fog pattern. you will notice the clouds hugging the coast from pacifica to half moon bay and sausalito. for the meteor shower tonight into sunday, you want to look to the northeast sky and we could have meters on average about 40-70 per hour. so pretty neat sight out there once again if you get away from the city lights and also the fog. temperatures from the this afternoon, you can pick your temperature from 59 from pacifica to 9 89 in san josi. we do have this, areas of fog

as we just showed you for the coast and bay. tomorrow some very hot numbers inland, but we bring in cooling in the long-range forecast. high pressure of course has been in command of our weather over of the past few days and once again tomorrow. maybe a little cooler, but the hottest locations will be hot, in the upper 90s to 100 degrees. the forecast models delayed the cooling trend that wouldn't kick in until probably wednesday or thursday. temperatures inland in the upper 90s, probably touching 100. once again the dense fog hugging the coast and into the afternoon hours, the clouds clear back to near the shoreline. and then inland, there we go with the upper 90s to right around 100 degrees. warmest locations around 100- 101. a little bit cooler, but still some hot numbers inland. once again we had that big

temperature range to talk about tomorrow afternoon. oakland mid-70s. there you can pick out the triple heat towards antioch and livermore. and in san francisco for tomorrow, day 36 outside lands. definitely want to bundle up with temperatures in the 60s at golden gate park. your forecast and this is a little bit of a change. we delayed the cooling trends as you can see still hot numbers inland monday into tuesday, but finally the fog wins out as you can see wednesday into thursday, cooler temperatures. ken at least we have options in the bay area. temperature range pretty impressive, nearly 50 degrees across parts of region. >> it measures out to one mile per degree. if you go ten miles it goes 10 degrees cooler. >> you could do basically a weather experiment with the thermometer and tracking the degrees with each mile. >> i have my story idea for

monday. >> thank you, mark. masa engineers began a software upgrade on the mars rover curiosity at the jet propulsion laboratory. nasa says curiosity needs the new software because the current system focuses on the landing mechanism. the updated software will focus on the day-to-day activities as it roams the surface of mars. we have new video coming into the ktvu newsroom, firefighters at milpitas are fighting a fire at the landfill. the landfill is near highway 37. the fire was first reported around 8:30 this evening. crews say it's only burning garbage at this point and not threatening anything. no word on when the fire might be put out or even how it started, but firefighters do tell us this much,, "it's
