here. over that ridge, that big cloud up into the sky, 2-3 miles away, that is the walker fire burning. 2,000 acres. now around here, and show you this is a staging area, less activity than earlier today, over that ridge there, that is the wye fire which burned 3,000 acres. that is the one that is burning closer to homes, the one that destroyed some structures, the wye fire, and it is the most immediate threat to homes. >> reporter: this morning firefighters set back fires to remove dry fuels that could spread the fire and helicopters picked up hundreds of gallons of water, dumping it over a ridge. >> drive down there, make contact. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters, including many from the bay area, marched to contain two major fires. >> the two fires continue to

burn because of the triple digits and the dry conditions. the walker fire is burning in a remote area, the concern is for the wye fire that burned one home and destroyed two other structures. >> we got 500 homes that are threatened. >> reporter: you can see how hard firefighters work to save homes. you can see that retardant. this home is near spring valley, a community in the line of fire last night. she saw flames racing over the mountains. >> disaster. fire. animals out of control. it was not pretty. >> reporter: she had minutes to leave. she came back today to get the animals. >> reporter: did you know your home was still here? >> i don't know. no. >> reporter: i don't know if

you see it, here comes the car going by on highway 20. that is the first for today because highway 20 has been closed all day today. just opened to one way traffic. back out here, over to the east, you can see the helicopters hovering there. the wye fire, the one you are looking at here to my right, that is 25% contained according to cal fire. the walker fire in the remote area, that is 30% contained. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> ktvu's bill -- ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the weather conditions. >> temperatures over 100 degrees. these are live pictures on the walker fire. you can see burning on the ridge line here and you see active flames in this area. a lot of smoke. you heard the firefighter

mention, not a lot of wind. if it was windy i don't think they would be talking 25% containment. temperatures hot. 105 degrees. so here is the fire zone. wye fire here. in this area and the walker fire over here. we are looking at 105 degrees. and humidity 9%. winds back down tonight and that will help firefighters. right now we have christien kafton in lake county. >> reporter: bill, you have been talking about the heat and i can tell you it is oppressive out here, the heat from the fire and the heat from the atmosphere. let's show you what homeowners are worried about. this is all that is left of this home. this home burned down, there is still flame over here. all that is left is stone work. to the right you can see the

arch way. they are monitoring the firefighters progress hoping they can stop the fire before more homes wind up like this one. >> reporter: while point of battle twin blazers homeowners gathered at the senior center clinging to every piece of good news. >> nothing is burning. >> reporter: the lodge is another evacuation center, the red cross says there is no word on how long they will have to wait. >> we have no word on the evacuation order being lifted. >> reporter: he is one of the lucky ones allowed to return home today. he watched right here as firefighters fought to save his home last night and says he prepared as best he could for a dangerous fire season. >> i clear around the house like it is right now here, i am sure that helped to save the house.

chevron refinery in richmond. inspectors focused on a 8- inch pipe today at the chevron refinery that leaked the fumes that sparked the fire. it was next to a larger pipe that was replaced. they want to know if the smaller one was corroded and if it was why it wasn't replaced. >> hard to imagine they wouldn't replace it. >> that part of it had refinery could be down for 6 months. bp is selling more assets to pay for the blow out two years ago. one is the arco brand outlets in california. it brings the total amount of assets sold to more than $26 billion. happening now in oakland,

demonstrators gathering for a march from the bart station to bart headquarters. the protesters are marking the first anniversary of a incident when bart cut cell phone service in order to disrupt a demonstration planned against bart. last week they approved a bill preventing government agencies from jamming cell phones during protests. police are investigating the shooting of a man today, they found his body inside a white car. east of the airport and an area that is not known for gang activity. the man was shot before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon while he was inside his car. investigators describe him as a hispanic man in his 30s. the legal battle over the estate of thomas kinkade returned to a courtroom today. ktvu's robert handa is live in

san jose where his girlfriend today claimed that she should own many of his original paintings. robert? >> reporter: frank, the two sides return to this courthouse and the stakes got higher. >> reporter: thomas kinkade's girlfriend made a move to claim some of his art work today. she is in a fight with his wife over the estate. she claims thomas kinkade wrote two wills giving her his mansion and $10 million. but she submitted a correction to the will saying it contain as barely legible word. they told the judge that word changes the status from care taker to owner. >> we think it makes it clearer

smashing into a home this morning. ktvu showed you these pictures. investigators say two 19-year- old drivers were racing and one of the cars pushed a boulder through a door. the cars crashed into a house and the drivers went to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. one man hurt and two women escaped injury when a garbage truck crashed into a gym. the truck was traveling down hill and may have lost its braked. it crashed into a parked car pushing it into a gym. the driver suffered injuries that were non-life threatening. two students are out on bail after being arrested over the weekend. police responded to reports of gunfire at a home on florida
