this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning, everyone welcome to mornings on 2. >> it is tuesday august 14th. dave clark has today off. happening now two wild fires continue to burn in lake county. so far more than 6,000 acres have burned in the area near highways 20 and 53. ktvu channel 2 report alex savage has more with bay area firefighters on what they're doing to control the flames. good morning, alex. >> reporter: two large wild fires burning here just east of clear lake are being treated as one fire. the wild fire and walker fire. together they stand at 6,000 acres. i want to show you some of the work that's being done to try to contain the fire. it's burned right off of highway 20.

that's where we are at this point. you can see just beyond us fire crews are continuing to set backfire so they can burn out all this dry brush that's right in the path of the walker fire. i want to show you some video we just shot right up highway 20 from this location a short time ago. this is where we came upon a crew, an engineering company from the hayward fire department. they've been up here helping to battle these two large wild fires they were right along the edge of highway 20. essentially their main goal was to make sure the leading edge of the walker fire didn't cross over that roadway. that was what they wanted to do. i talked with the battalion chief about their efforts this morning. >> we'll keep our eyes on it and make sure that we can put crews on it and start extinguishing the fire and make sure it doesn't spot on the other side. >> the wild fire and walker fire both burning east of clear

lake. they stand at 6,000 acres the latest containment figure that i got this morning 25% containment on both of these fires. bear in mind they haven't merged at this point strategically speaking cal fire treating them as one incident. a bit of good news came last night for evacuees that was the fact they were allowed to go back into their homes, most of the people 500 or so homes evacuated in the spring valley area. those people are now back home. the reason being is because the walker and the wi-fieres appear -- wild fires appear to be moving east in that direction. that's away from many of the homes in that area. there's really no longer a concern in terms of homes being burned. we do know that we do know since these fire broke out, we're live channel 2 news. >> an -- unhealthy error -- air alert has been issued. air quality officials say the

smoke can be especially hard on young children, senior citizens and suffering from asthma or the respiratory conditions. air quality is expected to remain poor. flex alert is in effect because of another day of hot temperatures in many parts of the state t. california independent system operator is urging customers to reduce their energy con such as especially during the late afternoon or heating hours. they want people to turn off the air conditioning when they're not home restrict the use of major appliances. steve will have the complete bay area forecast coming up in about 6 minutes. another confrontation between police and members of occupy oakland. community activists took over vacant library at east 15th 15th street and member avenue that is until police made them leave. live this morning at the library to show us what's going on there right now.

good morning. >> police are still here actually you can see they're standing guard here for the next 48 hours they tell us and we spoke with occupy protesters they say they're not going to be showing back up here until 10:00 this morning. police want to make sure they don't get back inside this building up here. you can see that it's been locked up there at the gate this high. dozens of squad cars blocked off miller avenue last night from international to foothill boulevard. at 11:00 police told protesters to leave within 15 minutes or they would be arrested. everyone did comply and there were no arrests. we spoke to one activists yesterday who said the group claimed miller library it sat vacant. >> there's the moment we would like to leaf this in the hand of community but not let the city board it up again, not let people use it and keep this. this was covered in trust. >> now, activists put dozens of

donated books. victor martinez after san francisco based proet. it started at garden now they are vowing to come back and re- establish their set up. no comment yet from oakland police. live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. and homeowner in the bay area are planning to call for a freeze to foreclosures today. protest is planned at 12:30 in oakland. protesters want to stop more foreclosures from happening before the homeowner's bill of rights go into effect. since 2007 there have been more than 10,000 foreclosures in the city of oakland. refinery fire, it's still not safe for investigators to enter. last week's failure occurred near the junction 3 pipe which were all inspected last november. inspectors replaced one pipe that was corroded the one connected to the fire was less

in service. the damaged unit could be down for as long as 6 months. there was a brief scare in martinez after small fire broke out at the shell refinery. officials say flames sparked up in a light oil processing unit just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon. hazardous material crews quickly put out the fire and no one was hurt in the incident. health advisory was lifted about an hour after the fire. the next time you log on to facebook, you may see an ad calling for marijuanaing to legalized. facebook said it has decide today reverse its band on ads promoting a number of marijuana initiatives. social networking site changed its position from free speech crew including the aclu. more than 15,000 people signed calling on facebook to approve the ads.

review. the new investigation will search for any wrongdoing. a lawsuit has been filed against the city of concord and its police department over claims of excessive force. he claims his civil rights were violated during a traffic stop when an officer shot him with a taser. he said 3 taser darts hit him in the back and fourth punctured his neck. police say the taser was deployed after he ran from the scene. he is suing for medical expenses and loss of wages. 7:23. we'll check in with sale and busy spots out there this morning. >> there are some busy spots, you know, and right now kind of funny treat from one of our followers who said highway 4 is not doing well. but he didn't put it that way. frank city natura would say. cannot clean it up. highway 4. very very slow. paraphrasing here from all the way to by point some slow traffic there. 680 from pleasant hill.

that traffic is moderately heavy. let's take a look at highway 24. a little bit slowing here as you can see driving over to more slow traffic. the bay bridge toll plaza could have a troubling morning with less slow with stalled vehicle on the bridge. fortunately nothing major, but if you look at the traffic it's backed up all the way to the maize and then 880 is very very slow coming in through. so this is not a typical day. this is more like a 20 to 25 minute wait before you make it into the city. bart is a good option. we just checked with bart, bart's trains are running on time. it's 7:25. let's go back toasty. >> thank you. well cooler today. there's a much bigger banken we're partly cloudy right now with tropical clouds coming in. chassis gene over there. they've come up from old mexico. sometimes they come in from the tropics these came up from the desert southwest an there's what's right there.

to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, everyone. i'm mike mibach. dave clark has the day off. continuing coverage from lake county where two wildfires have grown now 8,000 achers you, burning near highways 20 and 53 on the south side of the lake. alex savidge is there with the latest information from calfire. alex? >> reporter: well, good progress has been made on the by fire and the walk -- on the wye fire and the walker fire. we're told 7,000 acres have burned. between those two fires, they have 30% containment. let me show you the operation going on right now. these are crews trying to corral the walker fire. we're in kaluso county now.

they have set fires trying to burn off the tinder brush in the path of the walker fire. this is video we shot a moment ago just up the road. that's where we saw some crews and they were keeping an eye on the leading edge of the walker fire as it burned up the roadway and their job essentially was to keep it from jumping the roadway. luckily, winds have been very calm. late yesterday, throughout the evening and they are expecting the same thing today. but the bigger concern is the hot weather coming later today, 100-degree plus temperatures in this area. they are also worried about this dry bush that just burned so easily. the wind really has not been the fact ear. it's been the fact that we've had triple digit and incredibly dry conditions. that alone is allowing this fire to burn so quickly and intensely. >> reporter: and because these two fires are burning east, the wye fire around the walker

fire, burning m an easterly direction, that's good news for the homes -- burning in an easterly direction, that's good news for those homes. they were able to go back. not so much of a concern that the homes will burn. the fire did do some damage. two homes burned, another home suffered damage as well. it began on sunday afternoon fire the intersection, the junction of highway 20 and 53. and that's where investigators focused their investigation yesterday. they pinpointed the origin of the fire. but they are still trying to fig out what caused the fire -- figure out what caused fire. at this point, 1,000 firefighters are here. they've come from all over the state. they've come from the bay area to battle these two large wildfires and expect it will be another week before these two fires are fully contained. we're live this morning, alex

burned in decades. that's critically dry right now and that's why it's burning so quickly. >> reporter: last night, about 8:00, evacuation orders were lifted and hundreds of people returned to their homes in the spring valley area. now the work begins to figure out what started these two fires that started late sunday afternoon. the investigators were at the site, the point of origin to figure out the exact cause. it's still undetermined. there's a ton of resources. a lot of cries on the front lines, crews from across northern california and including many from here in the bay area. again, what you are looking out here is taking place on the eastern edge of the walker fry. a calfire spokesperson told me the expectation is it will take another week to get most of

these fire -- most of this fire contained. an unhealthy air alert has been issued for lake county because of all of the smoke from the fires. they say the smoke can be especially hard on young children, senior citizens and those suffering from asthma or other conditions. the air quality is expected to remain poor throughout lake county until the fire is out. a flex alert is issued today again. the california independent -- the california independent system is urging customers to reduce their energy consumption especially during the hours when the demand for electricity peaks. we'll have the forecast coming up in about six months. pam cook live in our
