avenue damaged in a fire last week. ten businesses in the neighborhood were damaged during the august 7th fire. one of the buildings that contained three businesses was destroyed and will have to be razed. >> it was good to have this meeting to let them know how important we thought ocean avenue has been, to not only to them but to the city. i think we registered that clearly. we also wanted to give them a sense of how willing we were to get things on the fast track. >> reporter: according to the fire chief it appears to have been accidental and was most likely sparked by roofing work done on one of the two buildings. >> occupy protesters evict from a library aren't giving up. some of them returned to the former miller library this morning on east 15th street in miller avenue. police were still onamia control after evicting them

overnight and as officers stood by they set up a mock library on the sidewalk but there were noa tempts to try to retake the building. . the police said it's still investigating a party bus incident last month that killed a young woman. the bus was headed south on highway 17 after a concert. officers say two young women got into a fight and fell out of the bus. a 25-year-old was killed. a 20-year-old was hurt. today a chp sergeant said they are still interviewing witnesses and the investigation could take another month. >> crews making progress against two lake county wildfires and today we have this new video to show you of the flames, you can see they continue to raid. fire has gone through at least 7,000 acres near the junction of highway 20 and 53 east of clear lake. ken pritchett live in lake

county. >> reporter: that is right. cal fire said they are dealing a fire that's gone to 7,000 acres. to give you the idea of how big it is, on sunday this is where one of the fires started. today, we went to the frontlines and we will take you there and show you that video. the frontlines, two days after this fire started, our 20-mile drive east of here. highway 20 provided a front row seat to what's been called the y fire. sunday night two homes were lost near clear lake. today it's only scrub and scattered trees that burned. >> fortunately not a lost homes ahead of the fire but there is a lot of overgrown thick vegetation that's dry and that's what we are seeing. >> reporter: cal fire said there are hundreds of acres of dry vegetation that could burn for days. today you can see firefighters

holding the line at highway 20. the foyer is being allowed to burn slowly down a hillside. a controlled situation that removes fuel safely in the right conditions. >> we are trying to hold this fire at the road. we don't want it to spot over the creek and run of the hillside jump highway 0. >> reporter: its open to traffic but only one way. slow going and by chp escort between hi way 16 and state route 53. at the don't of the line we found rick. >> you expect this? >> no. did not. i thought i was going to cut five hours off the trip. this is a shortcut. >> reporter: the chp said the one way traffic on highway 20 may be there until friday. there is still a lot of firefighter efforts going on here. there are 1100 firefighters on this containment at 30%.

>> ken would tell you up there it's a little bit cooler than yesterday and still no significant wind. that's great news. the cooler and less -- less wind or -- even light wind. outside we go. this is the live chopper. we are up in the fire zone and you can see a lot of the smoke in the area, even open flames on the ridge line. firefighters trying to contain this fire. they have containment but with the light winds the spread is not as aggressive as you would expect. there is the smoke. remember yesterday that was going straight up? look how it's tilting back? there is a southwest wind and that's blowing moister, cooler air in to the fire zone. it's a big fire, still burning but better conditions for firefighters. you can see a lot of oak in that area. let's look at the forecast for the fire zone for tomorrow. we are looking for temperatures tomorrow morning to be in the

low 80s for the most part. by lunchtime 90 degrees. the winds are still light and in the afternoon instead of 107 degrees more like 95 to 97 degrees. conditions are getting better for firefighters. >> state power officials issued a flex alert asking people to conserve energy. the system operator urged california to turn down the ac. officials are asking residents to wait until after seven to use major appliances. they said customers responded to a similar alert last week reducing power by almost one thousand megawatts. >> california congressman from central valley resigned effective immediately. the congressman is quitting just a few months before the november election. he wasn't running for re- election and is leaving early to help with parenting issues.

benefit. the cost is $465 a person. >> a child has died and 14 were hurt after a huge explosion at a home in a suburb of new york city. investigators say an 18 moved baby was rushed to a hospital where he later died. residents, neighbors and rescuer workers among those hurt. three people are listed in serious condition. the explosion also damaged surrounding homes. officials say two propane tanks were on the property. they say the initial investigation indicates that the blast was gas related. a utah meat packing company is recalling thousands of pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with e- coli. the company has recalled 38, 2oo pounds of beef. that includes boneless beef, prime, subprime and boxed beef. the products were shipped to california and utah in bulk. the u.s.d.a. is preparing a list of stores where it was then sold.

toys. if convicted he could get five- years in jail. the picture city in sacramento is facing a not so pretty balance sheet. the community of 900 has been struggling for years. it's about $350,000 in the hole right now with nothing left to cut. according to the sacramento bee city leaders looking at options including the possibility of a solution. if that happens the county will assume all assets along with city debt and the city would be no more. >> there are reports tonight that sciencists have photograph i can proof now that a mountain lion is in the middle of los angeles. want to show you a picture of the mountain lion taken from griffith park just north of hollywood. this photograph and others were taken by remotely triggered cameras. they say they have been tracking it as part of a study to try to find how they are able to survive so close to urban areas. there is good news from the

marine mammal experts where a wounded sea lion will soon have a new home old ray is recovering at the marine mammal center. he lost an eye to a gun shot wound. another one there was also blinded by gun fire. now both of them are healthy and even follow voice commands. the problem is neither of them could survive in the wild so they will be put in a zoo, aquarium or other sanctuary. >> if they come in with disease or an injury that you can't fix but are otherwise healthy we want a home for them. >> reporter: and the center said today they have just learned that old ray has been adopted by a zoo in indianapolis and will soon be shipped out to his new home. >> a national safety group issues an aalert after a string of deaths in which children were left in hot cars.

west nile. officials say that the heat wave increases the risk of the mosquito bourn virus. >> in richmond new information tonight about that massive fire last week. a news conference wrapped up late this afternoon. john was there and he is here now with what he learned. >> reporter: here at the chevron we have learned that the feds have many abilities to determine the cause but no real enforcement powers to mandate change but they did release some pictures. the united states chemical safety board which investigates the cause of chemical incidents and accidents is very much like the ntsb. currently interview was refinery workers and responders are a top priority while their memories are still fresh and because the steel beams over the area that was burned became super heated warped, access to the site is still very much off limits. >> the site remains at this point hazardous for human entry

getting worse. >> reporter: it's ironic san jose is dealing a gang situation even as city hall is being praised for its approach to gang problems. at this hour police officers swarming the 1500 block of south winchester where they say a hispanic male has been shot in an parent gang related shooting. police say it's a known gang area but are still trying to get more details on the shooting but say the victim is expected to survive. no arrests have been made. gang violence is also being felt in downtown san jose where we talked to merchants who say they feel like victims. >> tony west. >> reporter: san jose is getting national recognition for cracking down on gangs and it's community approach at reaching out to gangs. for more than half a dozen it's difficult to approach when their security cameras are always watching gang members attacking intimidating people in front of their businesses. >> dealing drugs, fight, the

this. ten thousand law enforcement agencies going through drunk driving enforcement. deaths dropped slightly from 2009 to 2010 by about 5%. the driver that are drinking are increasingly intoxicated. >> new stats released today show that 70% of deaths in drunk driving crashes in 2010 involved drivers with a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit. >> reporter: this is a scene from a drunk driving crash in florida in 2010. the very year from which the data was drawn. here are other facts. 20 to 24-year-old are most likely to be involved. there was one death every 51 minutes that year. folks caught for one dwi are four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash. so over the next few weeks the
