surveillance video. now today police say because of these sketches and video they are following up on tips and phone calls. we will keep you posted. and in san francisco the police department there is following up on leads after we showed this video last night of a beating caught on camera. it happened in the mission terrace neighborhood when a man was mugged. a neighbor captured the attack and now the police department is investigating. questions about crime stats in san francisco coming up in 10 minutes, a look at classifications that may change how crimes are counted in that city. today was the first day 2 million illegal immigrants could apply for protection under president obama's deferred action initiative. ktvu's ann rubin is live in san jose where one woman showed up in a cap and gown to celebrate

change. priests and other leaders met this morning along with a new illegal immigrants who stem to benefit from the policy. they urged governor jerry brown to sign the trust act. kamala harris issued a warning to those hoping to benefit from the policy. she warned of potential scams. she said illegal immigrants are targeted by attorneys who are not licensed to practice in california. immigration consultants who can't give legal advice are required to be licensed by the state. hundreds of immigrants became new u.s. citizens in oakland this morning. >> 1200 people attended the ceremony and took the oath at american citizens. the largest percentage immigrated from mexico. >> there is word tonight the chevron refinery in richmond that caught fire may have to close for up to six months for repairs. a spokesperson for iir tells ktvu that chevron could be forced to shut the refinery but today they would not speculate on closure. this comes as they say they received 9,000 claims so far from people who say the fire effected their health. at least a thousand of them are planning to take legal action. >> enough is enough and it has to stop and we hope it will stop. >> he is heading a team of attorneys who are preparing a lawsuit against chevron. apples and bears, you might

not think there is a connection but it turns out there is. new at 6:00 p.m., ktvu's robert handa shows us what is becoming a tradition. robert? >> reporter: this is the time of year when rangers assess the bear situation and take precautions to make sure it doesn't become dangerous. >> reporter: the apple picking event today is a fun event with a serious purpose. volunteers remove apples so the fruit doesn't attack the park's bears. >> keeps bears away from the campers and the cars and from breaking in and causing damage. >> reporter: ktvu shot pictures of bears here and there were several sightings today. >> we had to euthanize bears

that are a safety concern for visitors. but it has been rare. the park used to euthanize more bears. >> reporter: one bear came through last night. >> he was strolling across the campground. >> reporter: what was your reaction? >> we are always excited to see bears. >> we were very excited and i was happy we were in the car. >> reporter: apple picking started in 1998 when bear-human encounters peaked. this year it is 38, a 90% drop. there were only 63 last year. >> our goal is for people to store their food properly, allow bears to live their lives naturally. >> reporter: it is important to remember even though the apples are gone bears never killed anyone here but this year 13 bears have been hit by vehicles.

ktvu learned new details about three sexual assaults that happened at the outside lands festival that drew 200,000 people to golden gate park last weekend. police tell us the victims include three women, 18, 20 and a third. they were all unrelated. alcohol and drugs were involved

in each case. >> we believe that our victims weren't of a state of mind to give consent to have any time of sexual intercourse with anybody. and by definition that is a crime. >> police identified possible persons of interest but so far have not made arrests. the san francisco police department responded to reports that it has for years under report arrest rates for latinos and asians. department records classified latino as white and asians as other. police blame a out out of date computer system. >> we are working with the controller's office to develop a plan. we work with district attorney

and the sheriff's department. critics say it is impossible to know if racial protyling is taking place. -- profiling is taking place. police say they believed a man in this video is responsible for 5 armed robberies in redwood city and the north fair oaks area. that happened at two markets, a restaurant and a gas station. the robber was armed with a gun. big quakes hit today but they were all man made and all about making sure the levies could stand the pressure. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar is live to show us how the levies stood up and what it means for the state. >> reporter: water, 15-20 feet

management burning within the areas. it will remain in effect till there is a change in weather conditions or till the end of fire season. east of sacramento firefighters are battling a wildfire in the pilot hill area about 2:20 p.m. this afternoon. it is threatening homes. 75 acres have burned and the fire is 50% contained. the biggest challenges are the wind and heat in the area. in lake county, highway 20 reopened as they gained the upper hand on the wye fire, it is 70% contained. they are asking drivers to use caution while driving through the area. there is no word on a cause for the fires. it is breezy out there,

sacooling trend. -- there is a cooling trend. tomorrow morning, fog, tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m., fog in half moon bay. not a hot day. not a spare the air day, and fire danger doesn't go crazy. friday, things change around. tomorrow's set up. this low pressure. it will pull moisture north from tropical storm hector and bring it into our area. that is dangerous. thunderstorms are a real possibility. if this backs out, that moisture gets pulled over us, in the afternoon hours, friday, saturday, we could have a chance of a scattered thundershower. we will see what will happen as we move down the line.
