little bit of a slow down because of an earlier crash on the shoulder. now the traffic is moving well. move along to another picture here. northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. it is 6:00. let's go back to the desk. >> topping our news this morning, it is a critical day for suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. the ethic's commission will decide whether he is fit to be sheriff. >> reporter: in three hours, the ethic's commission is going to be making a final decision on this issue. weather he should keep his job as sheriff. the debate should get pretty firey. we're going to have opponents and supporters who are going to be allowed to weigh in. he was convicted of a misdemeanor false imprisonment charge. his attorneys and city attorneys will each get 45 minutes for

closing arguments. the commission will then get the chance to question both sides and then the public will have its say. >> democracy is not very neat. it's kind of messy and all out there. and that's going to happen in this case. >> reporter: antiviolence groups have spoken out. his advocates believe this has been a politically charged witch hunt. deliberate in open session and announce decision. then the board has 30 days to make its decision. 9 out of 11 to remove him from office. legal analyst jim hammer predicted that the commission will recommend removing him from office. but of course, we will be here live throughout the morning and on our news to figure out what happens. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news >> now to our breaking news in afghanistan. a taliban spokesman says it shot down an

nato helicopter. 11 people were killed including 7 american service members. that helicopter was a blackhawk helicopter. coming up at 6:14 we're going to go to our washington d.c. news room on the very latest. >> time now is 6:02. a man is facing charges on suspicion of sexually abusing children at his wife's day care. 49-year-old don elliot was arrested yesterday at the lots of tots in home day care. he's accused of abusing two of the children. sheriffs deputies say the license of the center will be revoked. >> parents are questioning whether they should allow their children to fly as unaccompanied minor. after a 10 year old girl from san francisco was stranded at one of the world's busiest airports. scheduled to fly from sfo to michigan with a stop in

chicago in june. but she missed her connection when a company that united paid to meet her in chicago never showed up. analysts say that incident is shining the light on many airlines practice of hiring outside companies to escort unaccompanied minors. the first north bay team to make it to the little league world series of baseball will make its debut today. the petaluma nationals is the team. they play noontime and it's on national tv. alex live right now in petaluma. i would assume you can feel the excitement out there. >> reporter: this town certainly is buzzing about their baseball team this morning as they get set to play the first game later on today. the game will be played in williams port, pennsylvania. but hundreds of people will be getting together here at the movie theater where they will be showing that game on the big screen.

>> and it's out and it's over. >> reporter: they won the west region beating hawaii. the little league team the first northern california team to make it to the world series since 2002. the team is made up of 12 and 13-year-old boys and most of them go to petaluma junior high school. yesterday they got to do something that was a dream come true for them take part in the world series parade. this is something they've waited a long time to do. and back home people are certainly pulling for them. >> it's good for the town. it really is. so i just hope they make it all the way. >> the baseball team is getting big league support. both the a's and giants teamed up to make a $15,000 donation so the team could pay for travel expenses. they now have their work cut out for them. enter 16 team double

drop off our temperatures. high pressure returns for today and as a result temperatures do warmup a little bit. we're still going to have the cool extreme near the coastline. and interesting weather pattern developing. the cloud cover the flow we've illustrated here moving up to friday and saturday. with that, high clouds. it will feel muggy out there. and a slight chance of isolated thunder storm favoring the high terrain. friday night and saturday. the chances have been fading. with all the fires out there one lightning strike is not good news. the potential for quite a bit. so be watching out for that into the weekend. for the bay, mostly sunny skies this afternoon. low 70s to lower 80s. right around 90 to 93. these numbers up about 3 to 5 degrees from yesterday's readings. and a look ahead five day forecast with weekend always in view. high clouds. gradual cooling by sunday into monday.

>> happening now, firefighter rz battling 70 fires burning west of the mississippi. take a look. you can see on the map there almost a dozen major wildfires are burning in california including that fire we've been covering. it is still threatening more than 900 homes. one of the largest fires burning on the west coast is the tailor bridge fire in washington state. and joins us now, rick price. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are a little cooler. not so windy. good for the firefighters. i want to talk to you about what's down the road. it's the taylor bridge. that bridge is the focus of the investigation into what caused this fire. investigators say they've tracked the fire to point of origin. and that point is the construction project

rebuilding the taylor bridge on highway 10. last night a number of people demanded to know exactly who started the fire. the state department of transportation says people who were there don't know that yesterday. but he insists the general contractor has fulfilled all the state's requirements that they are licensed bonded and insured under the terms of all the state's contract. notified its insurance company and working through the claim's process and working with dnr on the investigation. there's a lot at stake here with dozens of homes and out buildings destroyed. the damage is running into the millions. but again, they still need to pin down what happened here exactly. where the responsibility for all of this lies. we may learn more later this morning as officials hold a little bit of a briefing letting us know the latest on the fire and possibly the investigation. >> rick price there near washington. that's near one of

organization. suspect floyd lee corkins is accused of walking in and opening fire. security guard was injured but still able to wrestle the gun man to the ground. witnesses heard him criticize the group before firing his gun. the guard is expected to recover from his injuries. the group has been vocal in supporting chick fil a's stance against same sex marriage. make it harder for domestic violence offenders to own guns. checked firearms databases. the state senate has passed the bill which is now pending in the assembly appropriations committee. >> breaking news coming in from afghanistan. 7 american service members have been killed along with 4 afghans after their

helicopter crashed. jacqueline live in our washington d.c. news room to tell us who is claiming responsibility for that crash. >> reporter: a taliban spokesman is claiming insurgeance shot down that helicopter. the crash happened in southern afghanistan. 11 people were killed. 7 of them were american troops. the coalition is investigating the crash but not yet commented on the taliban taking credit. the bloodshed really has not been a topic on the campaign trail. president obama is here in washington today. reporting live in washington ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is 6:15. back here at home a san jose man who was wounded has now died from his injuries. police say 21-year-old victor mendoza was gunned down monday afternoon. investigators say the shooter fired the shots from a passing

car. the police investigation continues. a trucking company could face steep fines for an accident that caused westbound lanes on interstate 80 to be shut down for more than 8 hours. san josey news reports pios trucking may have failed to obtain the proper permits to carry a crane that clipped an overpass. the crane smashed a traffic signal and a light poll. and tore concrete from a pedestrian overpass. if the company didn't get the proper permits, could be forced to pay the cost of the repairs and pay additional fines. >> 16 minutes after 6:00. if you are getting ready to head out the door, sal has everything you need to know. >> that's right. good morning once again . we don't have too bad of a commute. we're going to start with a look at the maps here on 280. let's go to

time now 6:22. park rangers say the 15th annual apple picking event was a big success. campers and other visitors are invited to help pick apples for the orchard. those sweet apples can attract bears into areas where people spend a lot of time. that can lead to very dangerous confrontations. >> the park used to have to euthanize bears before we have the program we have now. >> there were almost 400 encounters a year between bears and people before this campaign to keep any food away from bears started about 15 years ago. so far this year there have been 38. the rangers add there's never been a case of a bear

killing a person. although 13 bears have been hit by cars just this year. santa clara county is hosting a job fair today with emphasis on jobs for former and current clients of cal works. the job fair will be held at the agency's office at 1879 center road in san jose. run from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 this afternoon. some of the participating employers include sears, vta, ryan security, wells fargo and edible arrangements. the job fair is open to everyone in santa clara county. >> faces serious financial problems. ktvu news has uncovered. chancellor has been on the job since may. she commutes from her home in montana. expense reports shows city college pays for airfare, taxi's, meals and rent which is

us on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's thursday august 16th. >> a lot to talk about this morning. couple hours from now in san francisco the final ethic's hearing will continue. tara is in san francisco to tell us what today's decision could mean. >> reporter: this was very critical day because essentially the ethic's commission will be laying out to the board of supervisors what it believes should happen. promises to be a lot of drama. in the past we've had out bursts from the audience during previous hearings. you have supporters which say this is a witch hunt who don't want him as sheriff. and antiviolence advocates who say he was convicted of a charge related to a misdemeanor charge. >> we want the commission, the

board of super advisors to know we are paying attention. and this is a very important issue to us. and that we're listening. >> reporter: this whole ordeal stems from a new year's eve argument with his wife where he ended up bruising her arm. each get 45 minutes for closing arguments. then get the chance to ask questions. the public will weigh in and the commission will deliberate an open session before rendering its opinion. in 3 to 4 weeks all of the paperwork gets turned over to the board. and supervisors have 30 days to make their decision. 9 of the 11 supervisors to oust him from his job. ktvu channel 2 news. >> family and friends of a south bay marine killed in after fan stan gathered together to bring

him home for the last time. arrived at sfo last night. you are seeing video of police patriot guard riders, family members and comrads escorting his body to the funeral home. before his arrival they gathered to remember him with pride. >> he really liked the iraqis. he made it a point to understand the culture. he read books like crazy. he could tell you intricacies about law. >> he was killed last week on his 4th tour of duty. he was scheduled to come home in december. the funeral will be held saturday afternoon. police in redwood city search for a suspect in five armed robbies in one week's time. coming up at 6:45 why officers believe the same suspect may be responsible for all of the robbies.

>> accused serial killer needs a new legal advisor. he's accused of murdering four women between 1977 and 1994. yesterday in a courtroom he announced he fired his legal advisor after four months. he wants the county to pay for a new legal advisor. but the public defender's office says he is a millionaire and doesn't qualify. his trial is scheduled to begin in november. san francisco police have now identified three quote persons of interest in the sexual assault allegations of what allegedly happened at the outside lands music festival. three young women were sexually assaulted on the grounds in golden gate park between saturday and early sunday morning. investigators with the special victim's unit say alcohol and drugs were involved. >> we believe our victims weren't in the state of mind to give consent to have any type of sexual intercourse. >> investigators have asked for dna and other evidence from the persons of interest as well as the victims.

next in the investigation they'll be contacting the concert's organizers. >> the first lawsuit has been filed in connection with the chevron refinery fire. civil rights attorney says the suit was filed on behalf of 8 people who claimed they suffered serious health problems related to the fire. more than 1,000 people have contacted his office. and he is heading a group of attorneys to prepare a class action lawsuit. >> time is now 6:34. national little leaguers will be playing first game today. starts at noontime. alex is in downtown petaluma where big viewing party is planned today. good morning. >> reporter: certainly pumped up about baseball team this morning. they are getting set to play first game in little league world series. the game will be played in williamsport, pennsylvania. folks will be coming down here to watch the

taylor bridge fire. redwood city police search for a suspect in just one week. paul chambers is at the scene of one of the holdups to sprain what police are learning about the case. >> reporter: you can clearly and plainly see the suspect in each case. as you said we're live outside one of the places right here across the street. we can go down the street to the right i'll be able to show you another place that was also where another one was believed to have occurred. close look for yourself in this video, this is the man police believe is responsible for at least five armed robbies since august 7th. here he's wearing new york yankees hat. this is where the most recent robbery occurs on tuesday. all of these robberies took place in a two mile radius.

seeing improvement getting into the city. watch the south bay closely in the santa clara valley and haven't had a lot to talk about. just a couple minor things. getting slow from 280. pockets of slow traffic . let's go to mark. >> good morning to you. once again starting out with mostly cloudy skies. cloud cover is increasing since 4:30 this morning. overcast right over the bay itself and even a few patches sneaking up into parts of south bay an jose -- san jose and mountain view. san francisco 56. oakland, 58. and san jose checking in 61 degrees. high pressure strengthens a little for today. that means more low 90s inland. keep the coast and the beaches on the cool side in the low 60s. there is a tropical depression hector and we're watching this moisture to our south. it is developing and the key here is the flow is going to transport some of that

moisture closer to the state. for friday and saturday thicken up the high clouds. it will feel muggy. and do bring in a big batch of high clouds and chance of isolated thunder storm for friday night and saturday. clouds clear back near the shore line. the clock ticking away. and here we go into friday. this is when we could have isolated thunder storm kick off. the model is backing of on those chances but something we keep an eye on into saturday morning. the sierra does pick up a chance of thunder storms. definitely bundle up today, temperatures in upper 50s to lower 60s. around the bay, increase of sunshine and temperatures on average 3 to 5 degrees warmer. warmest locations on track to reach the low to mid 90s. antioch 93. fremont around 80. and five day forecast, a few extra high

before the age of 16. also have to be in school or have to join the military and have no serious criminal records. >> people have been protesting in arizona over executive order against president obama's immigration plans. orz orz governor issued executive order yesterday and didn't take long for people to march against it. she ordered state agencies to deny benefits to illegal immigrants under that new federal immigration program. >> they are here illegally and unlawfully in the state of arizona. and it's already been determined that you are not allowed to have a driver's license if you are here illegally. >> as many as 80,000 people in arizona could be eligible to apply for the new program. >> happening right now, republican vice president candidate paul ryan is about to speak at this rally in ohio. these are live pictures you are looking at. this is at walsh university.
