that it could be used to choke them. he was taken to the hospital with what is being called a severe injury. a solano county man facing charges on suspicion of abusing children at his wife's day care. don elliot accused of arresting two children in rio vista. sheriffs' deputies say the license of that day care center will be revoked. we're asking for your help in identifying a dangerous suspect wanted in connection with a string of armed robberies. police released this surveillance video of one of the robbers in progress and as you can see, you can clearly see that suspect. police say he's responsible for at least five assaults since august 7th, at gas stations, markets and a restaurant. the latest was the hicienda. police say he's armed with a handgun. you're urged to call redwood

city police if you know anything. saying goodbye to a longtime contra costa county sheriff. an honor guard, sheriffs' deputies and marines escorted the casket of the sheriff. it started two hours ago at christ the king catholic church in pleasant hill. he retired in january of 2011, was diagnosed with leukemia just last month. the current sheriff said he met him 12 years ago. he was then and was to the end kind and generous, proud and true professional in every sense of the word. >> former sheriff rupert 69 years old, survived by a wife, four children and eight grandchildren. a 10-year-old boy is dead, a 6-year-old boy missing after they were swept away in the merced river. park officials say they were visiting from southern

california with family members, cooling off in the river yesterday. when the current carried the poise -- boys away. park visitors pulled the 10-year-old from the river 150 yards downstream but couldn't revive him. rescuers are searching for the other boy, presumed drowned. dry conditions and high fire danger prompted a statewide burn ban. cal fire this morning suspended permits for residential and fire control burning. the director of cal fire said with conditions of a state so dry "we need to take every step possible to prevent wildfires." fire crews are still on the scene of a wildfire. it's 80% contained but firefighters are still strengthening control lines. all residents have been allowed back into their homes. two houses were destroyed and three people were hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked that fire.

the u.s. forest service reversed its policy, will now resume nighttime aerial attacks on wildfires in southern california. california senator feinstein aannounced the policy change this morning calling it long overdue. aerial firefighting has been restricted to daylight hours force safety reasons but sunset wildfires are increasingly difficult to contain and she pointed to the deadly 2009 station . station fire. state lawmakers are considering to changing the name to cal wild. to make it more consistent with other state agencies like cal fire and caltrans. some state senators say it's a waste of taxpayers money. one report says changing the web site and designing a new logo could cost about $250,000. the little league world series is getting underway in pennsylvania now. there's a huge crowd of

supporters cheering on their team from the north bay. paul -- a huge crowd of supporters from the north bay. >> reporter: there are some people out here waiting to watch the team. they expect 500 people in total to watch each team for the big screen. the pride of petaluma. this team of 12 and 13-year-olds competing on the national stage in this year's little league world series. over the weekend they captured the championship with the 7-5 victory over hawaii. one boy said he was overjoyed to see his brother win. >> i wept over the pen hugging him. >> the last few years, they had a good chance. if in was ever a team to go, this would be the team to do it. >> reporter: supporters turned out from the local movie

2 news, more on today's event including winners. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> good luck to them. shares of facebook plunged to a new low as the ipo lockup period ends. stocks fell 7% today. the stock had lost almost half of its value since facebook's initial public offering in may. the expiration of the lockup period gives early investors and insiders the chance to sell their stock dumping a lot of facebook shares off the market. right now, with a little luck facebook stock is back under $20. still suffering a loss today. on the bay bridge crews begin the process of putting 35,000 tons of steel in place. we'll have more on that and the possibility of thunderstorms as we head into the weekend.

pictures live on the news show yesterday. the news says pia trucking may have failed to obtain the proper permits to carry a crane over that concrete overpass. it smashed a signal and light pole and tore concrete from the bottom of the pedestrian overpass. if the company didn't have the proper permits it could be forced to pay the cost of repairs to the overpass and additional fines. a deadly day for americans in afghanistan. u.s. troops among those killed in a blackhawk hospital crash. it went down in southern afghanistan in kandahar, a traditional taliban stronghold. seven american troops and four afghans died in the crash. the nato coalition is investigating the cause. however, the taliban claims their fighter shot that helicopter down. this all comes less than a week after six american service members were gunned down by two members of afghan security forces they were training. family and friends of 29-year-old captain nafim

will not grant safe passage out of the country for the wikileaks founder. britain wants to extradite him to sweden to be questioned about sexual assault allegations. he's also in trouble with the u.s. for publishing atic cables. crews have begun the process of shifting the new bridge from its temporary construction supports. caltrans described the process at the presentation this morning in san francisco. it involves jacking up the bridge so the temporary supports can be removed. the bridge weighs more than 35 tons. >> this is a very large milestone for the bay bridge. it's one we've been waiting for a number of years. and, it's been very carefully engineered to ensure it's done correctly. >> the process of shifting the bridge from the temporary supports to permanent cables is scheduled to take three months. workers at the hotel frankion at union square held up protests over a union

dispute. >> they promptly took our union contract and threw it in the trab can -- trash can. it's a contract we had had for over eight years. >> protesters say management refused to recognize a union contract covering many hotel workers. after the hotel was auctioned off in a foreclosure sale in 2010. protesters also claim a federal judge found the hotel guilty of firing and disciplining workers for union activities. ktvu checked with the company that owns the hotel and a spokesperson had no comment. longtime residents of eastern china now has a home in san francisco thanks to well known local chef. we are talking about an 1,800-pound bon bell from china. the new restaurant is opening in the westfield shopping center. that bell was supposed to go to a buddhist temple but it was too big to make it to the third

the moisture to the south. this was a tropical storm yesterday. it's now a tropical depression. the moisture path approaches the state as we go into friday and saturday. with that we think high clouds by tomorrow afternoon and could be muggy out there as well. we were watching thunderstorm chances. there is still a slight chance for the bay area for many of the hills. that will be for friday night into saturday morning. but the latest forecast models backing off on the chance. you can pick out the high clouds approaching the region friday night into saturday morning, increasing by saturday afternoon. as far as temperatures this afternoon, with patchy coastal fog, a little warmer than yesterday, 93 antioch. here's a look to the 7-day -- five-day forecast with the weekend always in view. we beef up the cloud cover for friday night into saturday morning. we watch the thunderstorm chances. right now looks like the bulk

of the action is to the north of the bay area. of course with the fire danger on the increase across a good portion of northern california. looks like we cool off by sunday and into monday of next week. a little warmer for today. >> looks pretty comfortable though. >> looking pretty good. at least the major heat is gone for now. some parents are questioning whether they should allow their child to fly as an unaccompanied minor. after a 10-year-old from san francisco was stranded in chicago. one of the busiest airports. back in june the child was scheduled to fly from sfo to traverse city, michigan with one stop in chicago. a company hired by united airlines was supposed to meet her in chicago, they failed to show up. analysts say the incident focuses on the way many airlines are using outside companies to escort unaccompanied minors. a special treat for elvis fans marking the 35th anniversary of his death.

his ex-wife priscilla and daughter lisa marie took the stage at graceland in memphis, tennessee last night. this was actually the first time those two have appeared together at the annual vigil which draws thousands of fans to graceland. elvis died suddenly in 1977 from a heart attack after a battle with prescription drug abuse. the 15th annual apple picking event is called a success. the park encourages volunteers and visitors to help come pick apples in the historic orchard. it's part of the efforts to keep the hundreds of black bears that live in yosemite from living with people. they are also reminding people to keep food locked up since it attracts the bears. before the apple picking event started there were nearly 400 human/bear encounters every year. so far this year, just 38. a city now considered to be one of the most unaffordable in the country. and the chp asking for the

the least affordable u.s. cities for homeowners. cnn found the city by the bay is second only to new york city, when it comes to affordability. the median home price in san francisco is $650,000. the median income is $103,000. the study found only 32% of those earning the median income could actually afford to own their own homes. the chp wants your help identifying drivers cheating their way out of registering cars in california. according to the chp, drivers who illegally register out of state are short changing california millions of dollars. the new law says new residents have 20 days to register their car after moving here. some drivers don't because of california's high registration fee. the chp is reminding the public to report offending driver information on a chp web site and the highway patrol will track them down. coming up at 4:00 -- we are standing by live in san
