falcons and bengals. it is decision day for the ethics committee. the hearing began at 9:00 this morning at city hall and ktvu has been inside all day. this in fact, is a live look at what's going on right now. at some point this evening, the members of that ethics commission are expected to decide whether ross is set for office. david. >> frank, the hearing reconvened a half hour ago after a one hour lunch. let's go for another live look inside the hearing room right now where you can see the ethics commissioner for the first time publicly debating the fate of sheriff ross mircarimi. >> they entered the room just after after 9:00 this morning. he be reinstated or permanently

lose his job. after he pled guilty to a domestic violence related charge back in december. at times, today's hearing centered on whether the mayor was justified in moving to suspend the sheriff. >> the fact he never talked to ms. lopez, the questions about his credibility and truthfulness, whether he reasonably exercised his discretion. if you find he did not, you must recommend to the board that the sheriff be reinstated. >> the sheriff consistently took actions that caused further negative consequences for his department and this city, there's no question this type of conduct warrants removal. he committed a violent crime against his wife. he isn't fit to serve. >> they are wrong. i can be a great sheriff and i can be a great sheriff that

and delores street. the child was taken to the hospital as a precaution. we did see the mother walking around. there is no word if the mother was arrested. a man is accused of sexually abusing children at his wife's in-home day care center. he was arrested in rio vista. he sexually abused two children. elliot is being held on $230,000 bail. the state health and human services department is in the process of revoking that day care's license. >> police are calling it an exact match. this surveillance video we first showed you yesterday linked to a strong of robberies on the peninsula led to the identification of a suspect. and now officers have that man surrounded. ktvu's sal castaneda is live where a standoff is now entering its seventh hour. >> reporter: i want to show you this scene here.

you can see that s.w.a.t. team is here and they have the area pretty much corded off for this redwood city area. news chopper 2 showing the scene in unincorporated redwood city, where sheriffs have been asking this robbery suspect to come out, but so far been ignored. the scene is closed caltrain. caltrain is single tracking around this area. this surveillance video is from one of the recent robberies. the sheriff's department identifies the suspect as 30- year-old miguel. shown here. he is held up five stores in other businesses in august in the redwood city area using a semi-automatic handgun. we have been showing this video since yesterday. investigators say the big tip came when someone saw it and recognized the suspect. >> a few of the callers knew him and so they gave us his name and we compared driver's

license photo with the video photo and it's an exact match. >> reporter: we have noticed savely heavily armed officers. the sheriff's department told us they have been watching the apartment since 8:00 this morning. they were doing under cover surveillance and then they noticed that it was actually him and that's when they sent in more officers and corded off the area. so far, there has been no change. the man is inside the apartment. he is not coming out. meanwhile, more officers continue to arrive from san mateo county. live in san mateo county, ktvu channel 2 news. so, who paid the most at the university of california? a new report on uc pay indicates it's not the administrators, it's two coaches. cal's head football coach makes $2.9 million and ucla basketball coach makes $2.1 million a year. doctors came next. one ucf cardiologist takes in

$1.8 million. and a cardiologist at ucla makes just over a million. not all of that pay comes from your tax money. some of the coaches pay comes from donations and some of the doctor's pay comes from research grants. some of the hidden state park's money we have been telling you about is about to get used. heard more testimony about $54 million in unused funding the department had hidden. we found out today some $20 million of that money is ready to be reinvested in local parks. >> if you did help out at your local park made some contribution, large or small, we want to match that with these dollars. >> oversight committee discussed new information about $270,000 in overtime pay. there are reports that overtime pay was given because some employees used disaster pay codes on the days they actually went on vacation. what started as a family trip to yosemite ended in a

horrible tragedy. two young boys swept away in a river right in front of their parents. and robert honda is in yosemite and tells us how it all happened. robert. >> reporter: frank, the mood here is grim right now. even in the mist of all this natural beauty and the thousands of visitors that have converged here for summer vacation. now a search for a young boy is still going on right now the me they were swept into the river yesterday when their family was hiking and cooling off. the ten-year-old was pulled out of the water downstream, but friends of the rescuers say the efforts didn't help. >> he wasn't able to bring him back. apparently he did cpr for quite a while until he got more help, but it was too late. >> six-year-old, also of that group, has not been accounted for. we had a full scale search yesterday. continuing the search today and unfortunately have not found him or had any clues. >> we are still looking.

we will continue to look throughout the day. if we don't find anything, we'll be back out there tomorrow morning. >> i feel sorry anybody has to go through something tragic like that. remind parents they need to watch their children when they get near the edge of the water. >> reporter: now at this point, there are no public restrictions in the area and we talked with rangers who say there has been no luck in finding the young boy. if we get more updates, we will give them to you in this newscast, otherwise a complete update at 10:00. live in yosemite, ktvu channel 2 news. health officials are warning californians to take precautions after two people contracted huntivirus. >> almost all of these cases come from people cleaning out their cabins. so the main thing is that when the cabins closed up, the mice go in there. when the mice go in, they defecate and urinate. >> again, two people came down with that virus recently after

staying in yosemite and one of them died. they were exposed through infected mice droppings that vaporized into the air. if a cabin has been closed for a while to leave the doors and windows open for an hour, then clean the floors with a solution of water and bleach. yosemite park officials have taken steps to rid their cabins of mouse droppings. construction on new homes across the country fell last month. according to the commerce department, housing starts were down 1.1% in july. however, there were some positive numbers. new permits for building homes rose 6.8% in july to $812,000. that's the highest rate it has been. a new ranking put san francisco high on the list of least affordable u.s. cities for homeowners. the national association of home builders housing opportunity index puts san francisco second only to new york city when it comes to affordability. the median san francisco home price is $650,000.

the median income is $103,000. the study finds only 32% of those earning that median income could afford to own their own home. stocks rose today on word of a renewed effort in europe to deal with that area's debt crisis. the dow industrials gained 85 points. the s & p 500 closed at its highest level since early april. the only thing holding up the road on the new signature spin of the bay bridge is this rusty looking framing. it won't be there much longer. >> and i'm back here at 4:20. we're going to look at increasing clouds from the south that will bring a chance of thundershowers in parts of the bay area. see you back here.

>> well, that big, big cable that's up on the bridge more than a mile long and more than 200 of these suspender cables are eventually and very soon going to hold up the weight of five eiffel towers. the construction frame that held up the roadway for the signature span of the new bay bridge will soon be retired and removed. contractors are just beginning the complex task of shifting the 35,000 tons of the roadway's weight to the enormous main cable and signature tower. >> some people have referred to it as tuning a harp. >> construction crews will jack the suspender cables, which are draped over the massive main cable to essentially lift the bridge deck off the construction framing. this will put the bridge into its final high tension shape. as we start lifting on the cables, it's going to be pulling down on the main cable. it's going to be shrinking the deck as well. >> so many people will be doing so many things on top of

this bridge for the next three months. the minute that work begins, no votes, only work boats will be allowed. >> approximately three months. >> just about everything associated with this phase of construction is unique. >> it's never been done before. >> despite accusations that the new bridge was not properly inspectioned, which caltrans denies, caltrans maintains that the new span will be one of the best and strongest on earth when it opens in just over a year from now. reporting live, consumer editor, ktvu channel 2 news. >> if you use the bridge, here's a planning note for the labor day weekend. caltrans plans to close that bridge from 10:00 p.m. on friday, august 31, to 5:00 a.m. on tuesday, september 4. following a similar closure over the memorial day weekend. the plan is to replace on the east side of the bridge during that time. caltrans says the new joints

will be state of the art, able to absorb. highway officials say you can plan to use highway 237 or the san mateo bridge during the labor day weekend closure. school started today in the school district and a pipeline repair project could mean some traffic headaches for parents and buses in one part of that city for the coming weeks. construction crews will be working along charleston road between middlefield road until early next month. pg&e is replacing a gas line as part of a system line project prompted by that deadly explosion back in 2010. investigators are looking into what caused a house fire in santa rosa. someone inside the house on heather drive called 911 after smelling smoke about 2:30 this morning. the cause is not yet been determined, but a problem with the home's electrical system may be to blame. the fire ended up causing an estimated $40,000 in damage. fortunately, no one was hurt. fire crews were on the

scene all day today. cal fire says the almost 8,000 acre fire is now 80% contained. firefighters are mopping up and strengthening control lines. all residents have been allowed back into their homes. two houses were destroyed. three people have been hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire. the u.s. forest service announced it will resume nighttime aerial fire fight attacks. it has been restricted today light hours. it will start the new night attacks with a single helicopter in angeles national forest. that's where the station fire escaped containment overnight. it destroyed dozens of homes and killed two firefighters. let's talk about our weather now. looks like that fog is rolling back in. >> temperatures came up a few degrees. temperatures tomorrow going to come down a little bit more, but subtle changes. there's fog along the coast right now. take a look at storm tracker 2.

you can see it out in the avenues. a lot of folks living out there. you are out south of market. you have fog now. you have fog in and around the financial district. that fog is going to push inland. so if you had fog this morning, you're going to see fog again tomorrow morning. that's how it's going to go. temperatures are going to come down a couple of degrees. overnight lows are in the -- these are back of a typical summer pattern. it's not overly hot, it's not above average. we have the fog. and overnight lows are going to be in the 50s. if you head out of the house tonight, you're going to the movies perhaps. when you come back, far inland or fairfield, you'll find temperatures in the upper 50s, say 11:00 tonight. chilly to mild in the evening hours as you go out and about your business. tomorrow morning, temperatures begin to warm. a lot like today. it won't be that much different, except some high clouds are going to start to

move in. these temperatures, microclimates. the 80s. low 90s. but the real weather story is going to be these high clouds are coming in from the sub tropics. i mentioned it last night, a tropical storm, or tropical depression is falling apart and that moisture is getting caught up in the flow. you can see the flow of moisture. that's going to start treading north as well. if you see showers southbound around kirkwood, around yosemite as well. this pattern is going to lend itself to more clouds around the area tomorrow. for us, increasing clouds means a good chance for thunderstorms. certainly around lake tahoe. you can seeing activity right now. but as we head into friday, a chance for thunderstorms as well. if you have weekend plan, be prepared, scattered clouds, and it's over, temperatures on the mild side. but this type of activity is

as we promised, we are monitoring ethics commission hearing going on in san francisco. the commission is expected to decide sometime tonight if suspended sheriff, ross mirkarimi should be reinstated to his job. right now, commissioners are discussing the list of allegations against him and sharing where they each stand. one commissioner said she didn't believe the well publicized fight between mirkarimi and his wife was the first time he crossed the line. on the other hand, some commissioners do not believe the mayor proved mirkarimi used his office reported the incident to police. we are monitoring the public debate. coming up, ktvu's david stevenson will be back with what ross mirkarimi's mother is

saying about today's hearing. it was a deadly day for americans in afghanistan. seven americans were killed in a black hawk helicopter crash. it went down in southern afghanistan. it's a taliban stronghold. four afghans also killed in the crash. the taliban claims its fighters shot the helicopter down. >> some disturbing army statistics out about the number of suicides. the army had 26 suicides in july among active duty soldiers. that's more than double the number from the month before. among army reserve soldiers, there were 12 suicides. the same as in june. suicides have gone up military wide this year. the increases prompted the pentagon to step up the search, which worsened as the pace of combat has eased. >> an international war of words after ecuador claimed asylum to the founder of

wikileaks. supporters demonstrated outside the ecuador embassy. he is held up inside there fighting extradition to sweeden in a sexual misconnect case. ecuador's foreign minister says he fears he will face political purse cushion in sweden or the united states. he published cables and dispatches about the wars in iraq and afghanistan, but british officials said they will not allow his safe passage. facebook stock hit a new low today as the ipo lockup period came to an end. early investors can now sell their shares after having to wait 90 days. when the park company first went public back in may, the stock listed at $38 a share. at one point today, facebook stock dropped to $19.69 per share. when the markets closed, the stock had come back just a bit, closing at $19.87 per share. for the day, it was down $1.33.

that's a drop of more than 6%. it is also the first time facebook stock has closed under $20. just how much influence does facebook have on the upcoming presidential election? a survey says not that much. found out for the most part that people ignored their friend's political postings and rants. very few will comment on the status updates, but 16% will add someone as a friend if they like what a person posted. one out of every five people will unfriend someone over political postings. >> sometimes it's because that person posts too much about politics. it's the volume. but for other people, they object. >> while it may appear that there's a bit of a distan for politically charged postings. 75% of those surveyed said they have friends that post about politics. >> the department of veteran's affairs stripped some federal employees of their purchasing power after uncovering spending at a conference in florida. 1800 federal employees attended

meeting could affect ross mirkarimi for years. what has changed, let's go to ktvu's david stevenson for a look inside. david. >> reporter: gasia, debate among the commissioners has been going on for an hour now over to recommend supervisors remove or reinstate sheriff ross mirkarimi. let's go live inside that city hall hearing room right now as commission members are taking up a variety of issues that stretched out over the last eight months. now this began in december. when mirkarimi bruised the arm of his wife, eliana lopez and suspended by mayor ed lee. much of tonight's debate focuses on the standards of misconduct for the sheriff. with some commissioners saying they don't believe the mayor proved mirkarimi tried to sway witnesses. commissioners heard from dozens of members of the public, ross mirkarimi's mother and a

attacked by a patient and this attack comes just days after workers started wearing a new safety alarm system around their necks. we were there when those new alarms were first introduced earlier this week. rob roth is back and tells us why it seems no one wants to wear them. rob. >> frank, just this past monday, we came here to napa state hospital to report on worker's concerns over a new safety device they say poses a danger to them. now workers say what happened here last evening proves what they have been saying. it happened on one of the units inside this psychiatric hospital. this psychologist said the patient punch add technician in the face. the patient began pulling on the laniard. >> they pulled it on either side. >> help quickly arrived and the technician was not seriously injured. administration issued a statement saying it broke off

fans at sporting events is on its way to the governor. the bill is response to the brutal beating of brian stowe outside dodger's stadium last year. the senate approved it. it would require all professional sports venues to post numbers fans can call or a text to alert security. the signs would have to be visible from stadium seats and in the parking lot. hundreds turned out in petaluma to cheer on the hometown team in the little league world series. live in petaluma where there were a lot of people excited, even though the players are thousands of miles away from their home field. >> reporter: right now, gasia, we are standing in front of their hometown theater where fans lined up 60 minutes before the first pitch. after today's first game, petaluma is getting louder. a wild crowd packed the sidewalks downtown petaluma. and at the front door, tickets were taken. >> we are so excited.

the chp says registration sheets are costing the government millions of dollars. registration sheets are people who move here from out of state and don't register their cars within the 20 days required by law or those who use other schemes to register california cars out of state to avoid the high registration fees here. the chp says you can report those people on the agency's website and officers will then go out and try to find them. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney, said today that president obama's plan for medicare would bankrupt the system. >> our plan, in change for current seniors and those 55 and older, his plan, $716 billion in cuts? >> romney gave a medicare

tutorial with a dry erase board while campaigning in south carolina. he said under president oh bomb many's proposal, 4 million people would -- the white house today took aim at mitt romney's running mate and ryan's proposed budget. >> despite claims to deficit hawkishness is that budget makes no claims to balancing deficits. or eliminating deficits until something like 30 years from now. >> he acknowledged the country has serious fiscal challenges, but congressman ryan is too preoccupied with giving tax cuts to wealthy americans. >> a bumpup in natural gas drilling has led to a drop in air pollution. that's according to an analysis by the associated press. the ap sites government figures that show the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the air is now at its lowest level in twenty years. and it quotes analysts who say it's due in part to some power

plant switching from goal to natural gas. increased drilling made natural gas is cheap that it pays for power plants to make the switch. a new report out today finds california ranks first when it comes to clean energy jobs. but activists say more jobs are needed. green energy supporters from all across the state rallied on the steps of the capital. all communities need clean energy, clean air, and good jobs. and they are calling for the passage of the solar for all bill, or ab1990. >> low income communities do not have the benefit of solar and we need to end that. we need to start providing solar to low income communities. >> advocates say if the bill passes, it will help create about 3,000 clean energy jobs within about two years. >> state lawmakers are considering an expensive name change. the new name would be cal wild. supporters say the change would make the department consistent

with other state agencies, such as caltrans and cal fire. the proposal passed in the state assembly, but some state senators say it's a waste of taxpayer money. changing the website and designing a new logo could cost about $250,000. police arrested a suspect in the gang related shooting earlier this week. 18-year-old julio of san jose was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. he is being held without bail. police say he shot a 25-year- old man tuesday afternoon on cadillac drive. that victim is expected to survive. >> a victim that will give young -- the state assembly passed sb9 authored by state senator of san francisco. the law would affect inmates who were convicted as minors and sentenced to life in prison without parole. it would allow them to petition for reconsideration of their sentence after serving 15 years. the offenders must have shown

themselves or attempt suicide than girls who did not have adhd. >> pregnant women who develop breast cancer and need chemotherapy don't have to choose between treatment and their babies. the studied 400 women with early stage breast cancer. nearly half had chemotherapy. the only difference between the babies born was that those whose mothers underwent chemotherapy were slightly under weight. celebrity chef is now imported more than just his cooking from china. he brought in an 1800 pound bronze bell for his new restaurant in san francisco's west field shopping center. that bell was cast for a buddhist temple in china. it turned out to be too heavy for the third story tower and was slated to be melted down. instead, it has taken some work to bring it to the place it is now located in san francisco. >> structural engineer, a rigging company, special

>> they involve clouds, not so much temperature change. a slight chance for some thundershowers in parts of the northern central california. of course that is the big concern. i talked about it last night. we'll look at it further as we get to the fog. i want to show you the fog. it's quite a chunk and has houses out in the avenues covered and temperatures in the 50s. as we go through the day tomorrow, we're looking for temperatures to begin to cool just a few degrees. that's because of the high clouds. the bay area weekend, temperatures trend down more. that's because of the high clouds. here's what we have. this monsoonal moisture. it gets pulled to the north. this is very unstable air by its nature. it is high clouds. high subtropical moisture, which is less likely to spawn thundershowers, but it is headed our way. you'll notice it tomorrow afternoon throughout the evening hours into saturday. there's a good chance for some thundershowers on the west slope of the sierra nevada.

we could see some stuff develop as we go into the next 24 to 36 hours. i'll be watching. it wouldn't be a big deal, like we aren't expecting tons of lightning strikes. but we are concerned about the higher terrain of the east bay. fire danger is the big deal because especially higher baselines, you tend to get dry lightning and that's something you don't want. here's the subtropical moisture. look at a plume of it and see it move out as we head into saturday. and some showers up in the mountains. most of it is high level. the models are keeping the rain out of this. it's been my experience, when you get this much tropical moisture, run the risk of having a thundershower. that's what i'll be tracking. your five-day forecast looks like this. there are the high clouds and temperatures trending downward into the bay area. i'm going to update this forecast tonight at 10:00. >> we'll see you then. and we have been talking about fires and we have breaking news right now from eldorado

county. a fire is burning in the diamond spring area. between highway 49 and sand ridge road. this is a very remote area. we are working to get more information on this fire. again, 25-acres in the diamond spring area in eldorado county. as we get more information, we'll bring it to you. cal berkeley's football team takes the field for the first time in months. the final touches as memorial stadium is preparing to reopen next month.

the stadium will be game ready september 1. >> before we talk football, we're going to talk little league world series. boy, how about that team from petaluma? >> they look like they were having a ball out there. it was the first time ever, petaluma made it to the little league world series. today they acted like, been there, done that, got the t- shirt. all we need is that trophy. circus-like atmosphere at petaluma scored in the first inning. that's bradley smith with the rbi double. bradley smith simply sensational with four hits today. smith was pitching in the bottom of the inning when they smack the game-tieing home run and all of the people realize this is not going be a run away. >> here comes bradley smith. that's good. a two-run shot to give petaluma the lead. watch the homer, just got out. out of the reach of the defender. then, andrew white came in to

close out the game and blows it past the final batter. they play sunday at 11:00 a.m. our time. the giants are enjoying a barbecue right now at manager, bruce boche's home. i wonder what the topic of conversation at that party was all about? giants called up is outfielder to replace melky cabrera today. he will start tomorrow night when they start a weekend series with the padres. >> giants did get a break today. not only did the dodgers lose, but matt kemp, he gets ejected from running at empires about a call on one of his teammates. kemp may face a suspension for all this nonsense as the giants now in the dodgers, again lost to pittsburgh. >> and remember stefan currie? let's go to stefan currie. that's him. he has been battling with tendon and ankle injuries. last year, broke down a couple
