fire that killed two elderly men this morning. firefighters said the effort made it more difficult to get to the victims and save them by what they found in that house. tara moriarty explains. >> reporter: you can see the stuff piled up in front of the house and it is junction that may have cost two people their -- and it is junk that may have cost two people their lives. >> lots of newspapers lots of furniture, food products, it is not a healthy living situation. >> reporter: the hording created such an obstacle for crews that it took them 20 minutes to my the first victim. firefighters got the call on the house fire at 3:40 this

morning. >> i went to the door and i saw flames shooting out of the neighbor's house right here. >> reporter: thomas kennedy lives two doors down and the firefighters first pulled out an 89-year-old man who was bedridden. they tried to resuscitate him but within ten minutes they discovered his partner, 72-year- old rodriguez who had been trying to escape. >> the guy has been taking care of his partner for a long time and i know stuff can get out of control. >> reporter: in fact, debris was piled 8 feet high in some areas in the home. but he says he understands why. >> you have somebody sick that he is taking care of and that took a lot of time. >> reporter: she is amazed no firefighters were hurt trying rescue the couple and we just learned the men were retired antique collectors who kept collecting and could not stop.

meanwhile they are trying to figure out what sparked this blaze. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 morning news. well a preliminary investigation has wrapped up. that crash happened around 2:00 a.m. after a short chase with the highway patrol. the driver was killed and one person injured after he allegedly ran a stop sign. the honda civic sped off prompting a short chase. >> again this area is rated right about 25 to 30 miles per hour and so the driver was well above the speed limits for this area on a city street. >> now investigators don't know why the driver refused to stop. the oakland police department is now handling this investigation because that crash happened on city streets. well sunday, new at noon

they have their sites setting -- sight set on dui offenders. >> reporter: we are 12 hours away from that crackdown and it's called avoid 13 and it is when law enforcement goes to the roadways cracking down on people drinking and driving. >> as police officers our message is clear and unwaiverring. if you drive drunk you will be arrested. >> i taught me daughter never to drink and drive but i never taught my daughter not to get in the car with a drunk driver. >> reporter: jordan west was killed november 21strd 2010. she was a passenger in a vehicle when a female driver lost control near highway 101. that same year the traffic

department reported several drivers under 21 had been drinking and in those accidents five people died. that is why law enforcements from every city in santa clara, and chp are teaming up over the next several days to put an end to drinking and driving. you never want to get that call that you lost a loved one. >> you or your family never want to hear the words, she is dead. >> reporter: now the santa clara district attorney's office prosecutes roughly 7,000 drunk driving cases each year and that's why they want to get the word out for the safety of everyone on the roadway. once again, the checkpoints begin at midnight and ends through labor day. ktvu channel 2 morning news. red cross is suspending a

program that offers safe rides home on weekend nights. they say they no longer have the funding to operate the program which has been in progress for 17 years. it started in 1984 after students were involved in a tragic alcohol-related crash. coming up more on labor day plans that impact drivers, a major bay area bridge is going to be closed and we will tell you more in just a few minutes. san jose police are asking the public's help in finding the person who shot a 17-year- old boy. it happened last night on sanders avenue near may fair park and interstate 680. the boy was shot at least once and was rushed to the hospital but police say his injuries were not life-threatening. the shooting appears to be gang related. there is is a decades old cold homicide case. they took william kelly into custody wednesday in connection

with a rape and homicide 26 years ago. he is a register sex offender living there. the dna links him to the rape and killing of the woman. her body was dumped a long skyline boulevard. he is set to be arraigned in superior court. oakland police arrested a man on suspicion of sexual assault and two robberies and believe he is responsible for more. they did release this picture of akeem jackson. police say they know about two victims, one a 16-year-old girl and another adult. he focused on prostitutes he would meet on the internet. >> he would meet potential victims using my red book.com, book a date with them and once they would meet he would rob and sexually assault the victim. >> jackson is being held in the

alameda county jail charged with rape robbery and kidnapping. anybody with information about this is asked to call the oakland police department. there is some confusion against -- suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. >> i agree to the third part and agree to second and third. >> reporter: the ethic's commission found sheriff ross mirkarimi's case found official misconduct. he and his wife eliana lopez clutched hands throughout that nine and a half hour meeting. >> the piling on of these charges waited us down which clearly was not an unfamiliar tactic from prosectorial areas. all right, here is the

. well, there were some serious traffic problems for drivers on interstate 680 and fremont, check out that pile of debris. that actually used to be a boat. it was on a trailer being pulled by an suv and then it was involved with a crash around 9:30 and the crash blocked two southbound lanes and traffic backed up as you can see that lasted for a couple of painful miles. there is no word on whether anybody was injured in that crash. it is more than five months

since sierra lemar went missing and they will continue to search for her with the help of a congressman. he will join that search. 15-year-old sierra lemar was last seen heading to school on the morning of march 16th. jar cease torres has been charged with her murder but her body has never been found. they are planning on closing the bridge for seismic retrofits and this morning they captured the images of the barge that will be used in that project and they took them in to show them seismic joints with an upgraded version 0 which should make the bridge better able to ride out any problems with the bridge. >> we have to reinforce the steel frame, to be able to set it in course and what you are looking at right here is the

jack and frame and the jack is right underneath this post right here. >> well it will run through 5:00 a.m. through tuesday september 4th. and firefighters responded to a small fire and it was located at 1342 chinatown. nobody was hurt and we just spoke to fire officials who said it cost $15,000 in damage and they are still trying to figure out how the fire started. officials say a chevron truck did not ignite in richmond. they chronicled the truck was equipped with something that could detect hydrocarbons. they were repairing a leak minutes before the fire started and investigators say they may never know what ignited the

vapor cloud. they met in richmond to discuss the chevron refinery fire. health officials say 11,000 people have reported symptoms from the exposure to the smoke and fire. they expect new results on-air quality monitoring by monday. new concerns for treasure island. according to the bay citizen, a navy report shows there has been a potential spread of radioactive contamination at the old treasure island navel station. that could complicate things near that former nuclear war training facility. well, excitement in san jose and samsung received a warm welcome in city hall. they flew from south korea to help with the research developments in san jose.

that ban will go into effect at the end of the month. only on 2, never before seen images of bay area mountain lions. the bay area puma project is tracking the big cats which is also known as cougers. they are only interested in finding deer and water. they want to help them live safely in the same area. >> if we are in fact seeing lions in the same area, it should give us pause and it should make us think what can we do to assist and enable them to remain healthy on this landscape yet we all co-exist comfortably. >> 90% of people who report seeing a mountain lion are most likely seeing another kind of animal. starting today they are protected by a new ordinance.

it allows bikers to do something if they are harassed by drivers. it is the latest policy and safety plan to make the city more bike friendly. well a nice afternoon for a bike ride with lots of sunshine except for the coast which has a constant fog on the shoreline. we have mostly clear skies and we will be watching out for the hills because of some moisture moving in that could trigger an isolated thunderstorm and that will be our main concern in the short-term. clearer skies inland and there is that fog bank, half-moon bay as we come closer to pacifica and ocean beach is chilly and temperatures are only in the 50s. as far as the forecast headlines for today, we do have this, coastal fog temperatures inland soaring back up to 90 degrees. tomorrow we are picking up the high clouds as early as this evening and the extended

forecast, the typical forecast, temperatures drop off just a little bit as we do head into tuesday. the current number, one of the cooler spots, warming up inland out towards santa rosa, 79 and livermore right around 80 san jose is in the lower #0s. here is a weather pattern, we have been talking about the moisture to our south which is associated with tropical storm hector and we have an area of low pressure and with that clouds will be increasing as we head into tonight right into saturday morning and there could be enough moisture with enough instability. we have a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm and with that fire danger is on the increase. we have multiple strikes up in california and that will be a big concern. the flow will pick up as we do saturday morning and this could

be one of those deals where it might wake you up. we call them knock turnnal thunderstorms because they happen overnight. watch outright into saturday morning and those chances do begin to back off by saturday afternoon and sunday looks just fine with the typical low clouds and fog to talk about. san mateo 75 degrees and with a look ahead, with your weekend always in view, your weekend is rapidly approaching a few extra high clouds especially for the morning hours and just a quiet pattern with 60s for the beaches and 80s as you work your way inland. it looks good with that fire danger as we head into tonight right through saturday morning. >> something to keep in mind, that is weird weather. >> it has been strange, that is is a lot to keep track of. prosecutors are looking for the growers of a large marijuana garden. that garden contained 17,000 plants and detectives found it

this week during a helicopter surveillance missing. one man was seen running from the area and he did get away and a handgun was found in the garden. they were all cut down by wednesday -- all marijuana plants were cut down by wednesday. the news reports suspected thief gave one of the i pads to a friend, who is also known as timmy the clown. he used the device to download stuff for his performances never knowing it was stolen but they tracked it down to his itunes account and mcfarland is due in court monday. here is a story of brotherly love. those are two gorilla sibellings after reuniting after spending three years apart. they are brothers and they

. all right, there is a look at your big board, the dow jones industrial average is up 15 points, facebook is still doing poorly but that is not good news for the market. they will triple the size of their workforce in the next few months and the electric car maker will increase to 20,000 this year and next year. they have 20,000 new people working at the plant but the ceo said more will be needed as they increase their production. >> we had to employ a lot of workers here and show that the automotive manufacturing can be done in california. >> auto industry analysts say there is some demand for the cars but with annual sales in the thousands, they remain a long way from joining the

mainstream. nfl is discussing information with the oakland raiders. city officials, the raiders, the only team that does not reject the city proposal that the team's build the facility and if you remember, the golden state warriors announced they want to move to san jose. and raiders play their second preseason game against the cardinals and you can catch that here at 7:00 tonight. raiders lost 3-0 to them on monday. the players will practice at this newly renovated memorial and crews have been working on this for the past year. new seats were added as well as the new concourse and the new stadium will be ready for the first game on september 1st against nevada. well starting tonight on channel 2 news, workers started wearing land yards around their
