in a fire station. the fire broke out today at about 6:30 on the deck of fire station 2 on powell street. nobody was hurt but the fire cause about $15,000 of damage. investigators are still trying to figure out how it started. happening now people in a neighborhood have been told to shelter in place as police investigate a suspicious package. it's happening in the 700 block of maplewood ve you a live pict the police say a call came in after 3:00 this afternoon. officers checked the manage and called in the bomb squad. they are waiting for the bomb squad to arrive. again we are -- understanding that people in this neighborhood, have been told to shelter in place. >> cal fire crew had their hands full responding to several grass fires, one of them was reported about 1:45 this afternoon near sear's point and highway 37 and arnold

drive. the fire burned about 20 acres of grass but crews now have it contained. and a few spot fires broke out about 1:30 this afternoon off southbound highway 101. they broke out in two places off shoulder but crew was able to put them out. the cause is under investigation. >> a high speed pursuit of a stolen car resulted in a crash today. oakland police spotted the stolen toyota camry just before noon. they tried to pull the car over but the driver sped away and got on 880 northbound. he hit a couple of vehicles, lost control and flipped the car over near 66th. he allegedly resisted arrest and was shot with a taser by police. oakland police are investigating a deadly crash that followed a short chase involving the highway patrol. we were first on the scene after the car hit a palm tree around 2:00 a.m. at 7th and maritime.

the driver was killed, a passenger was injured. the chp tried to pull over the driver after he ran a stopsign. they said the honda sped off at freeway speed prompting a short chase. investigators don't know why the driver wouldn't stop. >> now to the case against the suspended sheriff of san francisco. there was confusion last night and we talked to legal expects about that vote and what it means. >> reporter: while last night's vote appeared clear cut the road ahead for the sheriff and those who will vote on his fate isn't clear. though san francisco's ethics commission said the suspended sheriff is guilty of official misconduct for bruising the arm of his wife there is confusion about what it means for his future. >> in a way both side's have something to be happy about. the sheriff has fewer charges against him than he did before. the mayor i think has to be

satisfied with the core charge which was pling guilty. >> reporter: the commissioners rejected the charges that he tried convincing witnesses, threatened to use power in a custody dispute with his wife and deceived the law about the where abouts of his guns. they stopped short of recommending the supervisors remove him from office. they say in part because of the unprecedented nature of the process. >> nobody wins on this. the family and the consequences, also politically its not a win. >> it'll take nine of them to oust him. fine of the supervisors are running to keep their seats. political analysts say the vote also be watched by the sheriff supporters and detractors. >> by the time it goes to the board we are on top of election day. >> reporter: the commission is now set to create a written record for supervisors that will have 30 days to act.

woman in separate case success used a gun or taser. they say that he found his victims online. the search continues tonight in yosemite for a child swept away by the river. the 6-year-old jacob adams was near the vernall fall foot bridge. the body of his 10-year-old brother was pulled from the river 150 yards downstream. we first showed you video of the area yesterday on ktvu. rangers say they weren't in a restricted area but that boulders and small waterfalls can make the river more dangerous than it appears. >> supporters of a band ordered jailed are gathering in san francisco. we are live where the previously unknown band is drawing a lot of world support. >> reporter: one point we had about 30 protesters here outside the russian embassy, now it's a handful. they are here supporting a punk

themt. gained nearly $12 in trading today per share or about 2%. they also now have a market value of more than $600 billion making it the most valuable company in the world. the former number one company is exxon which is worth 400 billion. facebook shares dropped to another all time low today. facebook closed at $19.05 a share down 8 two cents or about 4% from its close yesterday. this as the early lock up period is now expired allowing certain to start selling their shares. it debuted at 38 dollars a share in may, about double it's current price. as for the broader market they wrapped up another positive week with the dow gaining 25, the nasdaq gained 14 and the sxp picking up two points. this is the 6th straight week of gains for stocks, it's the longest such run since january of last year. >> a top credit rating agency said it has plans to start a wide ranging review of finances

around california. they said they are -- the growing threat of cities in the state going bankrupt. stockton, and mammoth lakes among the most recent to file for bankruptcy. they said the possibility of more is putting bond holders at risk. a pickup truck hit and killed a woman on a bike this morning in antioch. the accident happened about 5:20 a.m. on east 18th street. police say the driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene called the police. a helicopter took the woman to the hospital in walnut creek where she died. >> police are look for an escapee considered a high risk offender with a history of violence, weapons and sex offenses. he was found missing this morning from a mental health center on edmond's road in redwood. we spoke to the sheriff's department about the escape and john is in san carlos now with what he has learned. >> reporter: this is the man that the sheriff's office is

searching for. derek sanders who officials say is a high risk sex offender. he escaped from the mental health facility where officials just an hour ago denied knowing anything about the missing patient. they denied it and then cited h," ppo laws. then we went next door where they said they were warned he was on the loose. we drove in to the neighborhood just up the hill where half a dozen said they got no warning at all about this escapee. >> kind of scary to know somebody is -- loose from down there and it's nice to hear about it because now we can be careful, more vigilante and watch out. >> reporter: the sheriff's office said sander is 165- pounds and was seen in a red polo shirt and blue jeans.

hernandez light there with them. marin county authorities have identified a woman found dead near stinson beach. a passerby found the body about six last night on the rocks about a half mile south of the beach. firefighters climbed down and tried to revive her but couldn't. we got off the phone with the sheriff's department. they have identified her as a 42-year-old amy smith from richmond. authorities say they don't suspect foul play. >> organizers of nevada's burning manifest val have filed suit against the county where it's held. burning man is staged overlay boar day weekend each year and draws tens of thousands of people to the desert. lawmakers passed an ordinance taking effect next year letting deputies regulate activities considered vulgarer or lewd. a construction project will close a bridge over the

particular moisture but that same type. that unstable, tropical air coming our way from a dying storm, depression. highs today, current temperatures any wait a minute 86 concord, 75 can jose, 70 mountain view. a lot like yesterday. all the moisture. see basically tropical. coming up, getting pulled. you have monsoon moisture and then tropical stuff from that dying tropical depression in this low pressure you see is pulling all to the north. it's really complex weather pattern. i think we will be fine but my worry is late tonight. early tomorrow morning. you see what it comes up, watch it start to explode. high level moisture but if it hit the higher terrain moving up maybe after midnight places like mount hamilton, some of the higher terrain it could spawn or trippinger -- trigger a lightning strike. that's the forecast. we with that. right now a slight chance.

late tonight, early tomorrow morning, what's the problem? mainly on the west slope of the sierra nevada where the higher terrain is and where a lot of the moisture will go. we have dry brush. we have a chance of a thunderstorm overnight. mainly east but if one of those breaks off. we have seen it beforew. had thousands of lightning strikes a system similar to this. we will catch it. i don't think that will happen. dry lightning a conner fire danger goes up. the west slope of the sierra nevada, they will have plenty of lightening thunder over flight and into tomorrow. the yes is how does it work out for us? we will track it for you and show the latest model that will show us where that lightning is anticipated. it does keep it out of the area north and east. the forecast highs in the warm spots tomorrow back in to the low 90s. weekend looks good but a lot of high clouds, dial this in, see you back here at 5:45. >> thank you. escalating dispute. what's fuel something of the

. dozens of striking south african miners dead in one of the worst shootings since apartide ended. a week long dispute over wages turned violent over the past 24 hours. police used a water cannon then stun grenades and tear gas on the striking minuters. when a group rushed at the officers they opened fire with automatic weapons and their pistols. 34 are confirmed dead. 78 wounded. today women came searching for their missing husbands and sons and protested the police shootings. >> search effort underway for a missing uc davis student. volunteers searched along the american river for signs of the 19-year-old. she was last seen in june. officials say she wandered away from a medical center where she was being treated for mental illness. her father said he is hoping she will be found safe. >> i believe she is a live and the search -- the search may

shell oil refinery in martinez. filings with the hazardous materials program show a gas leak on tuesday was caused by a pressure relief valve failure. it also reveals a small fire on monday was caused by a leak of oil from a compressor. >> bay area officers are going to start a stepped up crack down to make sure everybody everybody on the road is driving sober. called avoid the 13, labor day holiday enforcement campaign and getting off to an early start. they are teaming up over the next 17 days. they say the early start is necessary because in santa clara there are as many as 42 drunk driving crashes every day in the days leading up to the labor day weekend. santa rosa police investigating a road rage accident that left a bicyclist injured. it happened in east santa rosa about 5:15. police say the driver of a car yelled at a bicyclist and tried

it hit him. the bicyclist road onto a car path at the golf courts but the driver followed and ran him down. the bicyclist had moderate injuries. police are searching for a white man with gray hair driving a gold or beige car with a broken passenger side mirror. . >> in sunnyvale a new law to deal with that same type of situation involving bike riders and drivers. robert honda is here with word that some bicyclists say they are harassed and why drivers may now be -- may need to be more careful. >> reporter: this section of sunnyvale is known as the monster because it's considered by many the busiest street in the city. take a look. no bike lanes. it's the main reason one is pushing for this new law. kevin jackson is a long time bike rider who said he got tired of the problems he faced. he said the city has to many cars and not enough bike lanes.

>> people flip you the bird or blast the horn. they like to rev the engine and pass by as close as possible. they think it's their job to teach you a lesson. >> reporter: jackson decided to turn the tables. he pushed for a new ordinance to make sure those types of actions against bicyclists would be considered harassment and would increase the amount of money a bicyclist could seek in court. the city council approved and the ordinance went into effect today. >> without the ordinance you wouldn't be able to recoup attorney fees. with that added difference, a lawyer is more likely to take on the case. >> reporter: bicyclists we talked to said they approve of it but point out since the burden of proof is still on them to prove the harass hadn't it may be unrealistic. >> lot of people are so -- concerned in this society they don't know they have almost run me over. >> it'll be difficult to catch them. it's not like i will strap a camera to my helmet.

. you may call it a holy war. the cat like church fighting a rule on birth control in the health care reform law. scott mcfarland reports the churches here in the bay area and around the nation are being asked to join the battle >> the catholic churches of the bay area leading fight against a new federal rule they say requires the church to give it's own workers easier access to birth control. we are told priests in the san francisco area have been told to talk about it. in other churches they are putting in bulletins and catholic newspapers. >> religious liberty is not something that just goes away. this is a major assault on our constitutional rights. so you are going to see much more activity.

>> reporter: the 2010 health reform law requires employ ears to cover birth control. bishops say the universities, charities and some of their schools have to. they have tried for months to block the rule and they have failed so far. the requirement took effect nationwide over the past week. one of the groups defending this regulation says the church is the one strong arms. >> in that case it's the boss using his religion to discriminate against the employees. that may not be of that religion. >> reporter: you think it's a double standard? >> i think it's a stretch to say it's religious liberty when it's really the boss saying you have to follow my religion. >> reporter: congress can overturn the law but there is no consensus to do so. what's more it can't come to anything any time soon. they are on vacation for another month. scott mcfarland.

>> you may remember the story about steve jobs home being robbed. now we have learned that one of the items allegedly stolen ended up in the hands of a clown. according to the americany news the suspected thief gave steve job's stolen i-pad to a friend, kenneth kahn who is known as kenny the clown. he said he used the i-pad to down load music for his performances for children, not realizing it was stolen. with in days police tracked the i-pad to him through his i- tunes account. the man accused of robbing the home is due in court next month monday. >> merchants of magic spells will have to find a new market place. e-bay is banning it. they will no longer be up on the sita lock with advice, and curses. ed company said the changes meant to build trust with the users. al media has recorded it's
