last night. >> welcome to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. rosemary, we were talking about how i got so surprised by the drops of rain on my windshield this morning. isolated showers being the keyword. we are mostly cloudy but mainly dry. the showers are in and around the livermore tracy area at this time. also tracking a few cells near south of morgan hill down into monterey. we will continue with this through the morning hours, our afternoon looking pretty good. we'll continue with our cooling trend in the mostly cloudy skies overhead this morning will turn partly cloudy to mostly clear. i'll detail this for you coming up. happening right now,

people in san ramon are waking up in tents, they spent the night camped out waiting for a chance to baugh new home. allie rasmus is live from the campsite to explain the reason behind the demand for those new homes. ally. >> reporter: this is near bollinger and doherty road. the campsite is bigger than it looks. there are three tents but a lot of people have been camping here for days, even weeks in their cars parked in this cul- de-sac. the woman you see there has been camping out for two weeks. two two weeks. she and the other people want to buy one of the nine new homes built in this subdivision. why here? the woman said she and her family have been house hunting for three years. she says she has her eye on her home in this subdivision because she says mainly the school district. this is the san ramon valley unified school district these homes feed into. she says the price and the amount of space was right. the prize price for these 9 homes is about 700,000.

for a four bed four bathroom home. across the bay area, the real estate market has improved. home prices have risen for the last 13 months in a row. that's why the people you see here are getting stuff out of their cars. waking up, 10 a.m. is when these home goes for sale. so the people here say it was worth the wait for them. coming up a half hour from now we'll tell you more about the trends in the bay area real estate market, and also talk to some people who have been camped out here. not all of them are buying a home. there's actually at least one person here who has been hired as a place holder for a prospective home owner and he has been camping out for a week to hold their place in line. more on that in a half hour. live in an ramon, allie rasmus, ktvu. in overnight news. the c.h.p. says drowsy driving may be to blame for a deadly wreck in the east bay. it happened around 12:20 this morning on interstate 680 in pleasanton. a convertible with two people inside veered off the roadway

through some bushes, and ended up as you can see there, in a dirt fenced off area. the driver suffers minor injuries but her female passenger died at the scene. the driver told the c.h.p. she had fallen asleep behind the wheel. >> we arrived on scene, saw there was just one vehicle involved. the driver was the one that reported the collision. >> the identities of the two women have not been released, but they are said to be in their 20s. officers don't believe alcohol was a factor in the crash but they are at the hospital and are still in the process of interviewing the driver. all lanes of i-580 are back open in san leandro after being shut down overnight for 45 minutes in the westbound direction near fairmont drive. the highway patrol says there was a police investigation in that area, but they wouldn't give us any more details. a manhunt resumes this morning for a high-risk sex offender who escaped a peninsula mental health facility. 34-year-old derek sanders was

first reported missing early yesterday morning. he was a patient at cordelares mental health services in redwood city east interstate 280 over edgewood road. staffers making the rounds first noticed the escape. the county sheriff's office says they think sanders may have fled through an elevator shaft. a county wide alert was sent out to law enforcement and an advisory to people living in the area. >> he has prior sex offense in his history. the fact that he has also sex offense with minors is definitely a high risk in our community. >> and these are both photos of sanders. the sheriff's department says the one on the right is closest to what he looks like now. he is 5' 11, 165 pounds and was last wearing a red polo shirt and blue genes. he has family in san mateo and alameda counties. fan violence marched last night's football game between the raiders and the arizona cardinals. a fight broke out between two men in the parking lot outside the stadium near glendale,

arizona. police say one man shot the other in the face. the victim, who is in his 30s is in critical condition, but he is in stable condition. his injuries, however, are considered life threatening. police arrested the gunman. the incident happened during the 3rd quarter of the game. no other fans were injured and the cardinals won, 31-27. police are looking for a man who in an apparent fit of road rage struck a bicyclist in santa rosa. it happened thursday night at the oakmont golf course. the bicyclist told police a gray haired man pulled up alongside him and started screaming. police say the driver when chased the cyclist onto the golf course and rear-ended him. the victim suffered moderate injuries. officers say the car is a gold or beige sedan, and may have a broken passenger side mirror. a memorial service will be held today for a marine killed in afghanistan. 29-year-old marine captain matthew manukian lived in los altos hills. the military says he was killed last week in afghanistan while on his fourth tour of duty.

manukian graduated from st. francis high school in mountain view. today's service will be inside the school's gym at 3:00. more than 1000 people are expected to attend the service, which will include a 21-gun salute, and a military fly- over. we are learning that a late county man was among the troops killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. 23-year-old richard essex died on thursday when the army blackhawk helicopter was gunned down. six other american troops died. a public service will be held for essex on september 1 at kelseyville high school in kelseyville. the doors are open for veterans of all ages at a resource fair in hayward today. that fair is from 10:00 until 12:30 in the afternoon. it's at the veterans memorial building on main street. there will be information and resources and it is all free. happening now, republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is hitting the campaign trail.

you are looking at a live picture of the rally getting under way. this is in the village of florida, as you can see. it is just getting started. coming up at 7:15, his message top florida's large and influential senior community, and the special guest he's bringing in to help deliver his message. more california cities are at risk of bankruptcy. according to a new study by the moody's credit agency. so far three california cities have filed for bankruptcy just this year. those cities include stockton, san bernadino, and ma'am moth lakes. but the rating agency says more cities are likely to file because many cities are struggling with deep budget cuts. san jose closed libraries and laid off police officers to cut costs. moody's says it's a similar story in other cities who have been forced to borrow from lending agencies. a wildfire burning in lake county is 95% contained with full containment expected today. the fire has burned more than 7500 acres since it sparked up last sunday afternoon. two houses burned in the fire, and three people were hurt.

all evacuation orders have been lifted. all right. your time now is 7:08. let's head to rosemary orosco for a look at the weather. we have been talking about the drizzling showers. how is the weather looking? >> for the afternoon we're looking good and sunday will be trier. -- drier. at this hour the headline remains the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and we're even feeling a few drops hit the ground in some areas. a live look outside our doors, multi level clouds out there, we've got low clouds, and fingers of fog moving across the bay. we've got mid and high level clouds as you can see in that shot. we have a little bit of sunshine as well. the satellite radar here, we're watching a line of light showers, looks like from monterey, perhaps crossing over the gilroy morgan hill area. you see it right about here, stretching towards livermore, maybe into anti jobbing. you can see how this continues to make a northeasterly trek. this the tropical moisture being drawn in by a system right about here. it's going to continue its path

to the north and to the east, pulling with it the moisture. and by the afternoon we're looking at partly cloudy skies here at home. if you're headed to the sierra for today, another round of thunderstorms will continue there for the entire day. but if you look close enough, you can even see the counterclockwise motion going on here again, helping to draw in that tropical moisture from the south. a few showers in the forecast this morning. if you have afternoon plans, maybe a backyard barbecue, a birthday party, you'll be in good shape. let me show you here. clearing us out to partly cloudy, it's 1:00 and we're in good shape. that's what we can expect the second half of the day. this morning it's just the possibility of a few light showers. it is the cloud to ground lightning strikes that we're worried about because that, of course increases the fire danger for our area. 63 degrees right now in concord, 60 in oakland, 59 in hayward. 62 san jose. numbers are up from yesterday. by a few degrees in some cases, several degrees in others. but for the afternoon we'll continue our cooling trend. numbers will be very similar to what we felt on friday.

good morning to you. starting out with a mix of sun and clouds. unsettled weather in the forecast through the morning hours. questions remain about a suspicious item that caused quite a scare in a palo alto neighborhood. residents found the device on maplewood avenue yesterday. they describe it as a soda bottle wrapped in a gauze like fabric with metal clamps around it. a bomb squad was called out and the robot ended up destroying that device. police later determined that the device was used, or something used to make drugs,

but they're still trying to figure out who put it there. movie theaters in the southeast are on alert this morning. federal and local law enforcement searched more than 200 theaters yesterday looking for explosives. someone phoned in a bomb threat to car mike cinemas, the nation's fourth largest theater chain headquartered in georgia. investigators say the caller sounded like a disgruntled worker and had referenced the new silver sylvester stallone film the expendables 2. >> if you got something against somebody take it out one on one not including the mass of people. >> something has to be wrong with them. why would you do that with everything going on in the world? >> so far no bombs have been found. the theaters reopened late in the afternoon. that chain does not have any theaters right here in the i bay area. the f.b.i. has taken over the investigation. >>this time last week mitt romney named wisconsin congressman paul ryan as his running mate and now the republican vice presidential

candidate is crossing the country to tout the g.o.p. ticket. you are taking a live look at where ryan will be this morning. this is the villages, florida. in the central part of that state. and it is a fast-growing retirement community northwest of orlando. now ryan is trying to calm fierce about medicare and social security. and he's brought along a friend. his 78-year-old mother betty, to blunt criticism from democrats that if romney wins the white house he'll gut programs for older americans. a new report could fan the controversy regarding how much mitt romney pays in taxes. an associated press report shows congressman paul ryan paid a higher federal tax rate than the multi millionaire in in 2010 ryan paid 15.9%. romney paid just below 14%. last year ryan's rate was 20%, compared to romney's 15.4%. meanwhile, ryan and his wife earn more than $323,000 last year.

they paid $65,000 in federal taxes. romney earned about $21 million and he made about 3.2 million in federal taxes. president obama is going to stump in new hampshire today. on tuesday he'll speak at a community college in reno. >> that's why we've invested in math and science education and given states more flexibility on no child left behind. >> well, education is the theme in this morning's presidential address. president obama wants congress to support a section of his jobs bill that's designed to rehire teachers and prevent further layoffs. facebook stock is at a new low. they closed just above $19 yesterday. three months ago, facebook priced its i.p.o. at $38. analysts say investors appear to be concerned about how facebook will make money from the increasing numbers of smart phone and tablet users. economists say the latest jobless numbers in california are better than they appear. the jobless rate in july held at 10.7% for the second

consecutive month. that equates to about $2 million californians out of work. a year ago, e unemployment rate in the state was at 11.9%. the nation's jobless rate is lower, but did tick up to 8.3% last month. and here is the breakdown in the bay area. all nine counties are below the statewide average, and only solano county is in double digits at 10.3%. marin county continues to have the lowest unemployment rate followed by san mateo and san francisco. it's the day many incoming freshmen have been waiting for. it's move-in weekend at u.c. berkeley. >> i'm nervous, excited, anxious to start. just a mix of emotions. i am excited to be here. >> thousands over new cal students are moving into their dorms, but while students are excited to start college, they also tell us they're worried about the costs of tuition, and housing. >> looking for good housing is to -- is to not be like too picky.

>> the estimated cost of tuition, books, housing and transportation at u.c. berkeley is about $32,000 a year. well, today 1000 backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to oakland students at a back to school rally. oakland mayor jean quann, from the electric company and the dance team from the golden state warriors will be at today's event. the first 1000 students to register for school will receive the backpacks. the rally starts at 9 this morning. >> there is a growing debate about a san francisco program that allows residents to turn parking spots into tiny parks. sponsors pay the city several thousand dollars to rent the spaces and turn them into cafe seating or green space. now supporters say the parklets are a way to introduce parks into urban areas. >> with the parklets, private citizens can basically fund public parks. >> but on the flip side, some people say they want limits on the number of parklets, because

they're taking away valuable parking spots in areas where it's, well, difficult to park. the city plans to issue its next round of parklet permits in the fall, and currently has no limits in place for those number of parklets. a san diego area company is turning seawater into bottled water. solar rain in valley centers is making drinking water from the ocean make sense, because it doesn't deplete reservoirs or other sources of fresh water. solar rain also says water benefits the environment. its bottles are bio degradable and can be recycled. >> we're absolutely the only and most sustainable green bottle water company in the world. >> the company also says ocean- sourced water has a balance of naturally occurring minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium. the organizers of the bernie mean festival has filed a lawsuit over a fee increase. they say new fees levied

california sick. the melons were grown in indiana and kentucky. two people have died and nearly 15 others have gotten sick from the outbreak nationwide. this recent samonella outbreak comes after cantaloupe contaminated with listeria killed 30 people in 11 states last year. it was the deadliest u.s. food- borne outbreak in more than a decade. the fight against west nile continues in dallas, texas. another round of aerial spraying took place last night but rain cut the efforts short. the state is experiencing its worst year of the virus. 10 people have been killed and at least 200 others have gotten sick. more aerial spraying is scheduled for monday. this is the first time that city has authorized aerial spraying of insecticide in more than 45 years. in california another human case of west nile has been reported in sutter county. it's the first human case of the virus that is in that county in more than 5 years. 32 out of 50 counties in the state have reported west nile virus activity. 12 counties 1r reported human cases, and in the north bay,

officials detected four more cases of west nile virus. three dead birds tested positive in sonoma county and another one in marin county. tropical storm helene is expected to make landfall in mexico sometime today. it's expected to it will the northern part of vera cruz. the storm is bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the area already recovering from hurricane ernesto last week. flood damage from that storm left 10,000 people without a home. all right. time now is 7:24. it's shaping up to be a nice weekend, says rosemary. >> it is. >> but a little weird. rosemary watching strange weather for us. hi, rosemary. >> good morning to you. almost back on the weekend of the 5th, when that ground to lightning -- cloud to ground lightning strike, wow, that was hard for me to say, actually started a fire in the santa cruz mountains. that is the concern this morning. we have some isolated showers but the bigger concern is a lightning strike that could

actually hit the ground. we've got a little bit of light rain, it looks like, over our area of monterey. salinas. the rest of us mostly dry and mostly gray. we have a mix of mid and high- level clouds, mix of low clouds out there. earlier this morning, southeast sonoma county experienced a thunderstorm. outside of that a few light showers falling at times. look at the satellite radar, you can see that plume of monsoonal moisture pulling in from the south. this will continue moving north and east which means the sara for today going to be lighting up once again. we here at home will be drying out in the next couple of hours, and we're looking goodbye the afternoon. outside our doors right now, faints and low 60s with the gray -- 50s and low 60s with the gray skies. temperatures warming right about noontime. 60s at the coast, 70s at the bay and some hot spots touching 80 degrees. the very well inland ears will get to near 90 this afternoon. the cooling trend will continue, though. tomorrow morning we wake up with clouds and fog. partly cloudy for the afternoon. numbers very similar to today

goes on sale at exactly 10 a.m. for two weeks people have camped out, set up three or four tents in the grass out ere. this morning you can see they are packing up their blankets and putting their stuff away, hoping the long wait is now over. but this is what it looked like just a half hour ago. some people had tents and had been camping out in their cars for as long as two weeks to buy one of nine new homes for sale in the gayle ranch community of san ramon. one mother of two who has been living in her car in the parking lot since august 6th, we talked to her this morning. she said she wanted to be first in line to buy one of these nine homes. she says she and her husband have been shopping for a home for three years. why does she want this particular house in this particular subdivision? she says the price was good, $700,000 for a four bed four bathhouse. but she says that wasn't even the most important reason why she wants to live here. she told us what was. >> school district. i have a five-year-old and an eight-year-old, and schools are our main concern. that's the reason why we want

to come over here. >> reporter: and the san ramon valley unified school district is the district that all these homes feed into. but not everyone camping out here this week is a home buyer. we talked to one man who was hired and paid to camp out here since last saturday. >> i'm actually holding a spot for another buyer. i got hired to do it, so you know, and i'm -- i'm happy to help them get their dream home. you know. and i've got some down time. i'm a truck driver, my truck is in the shop. >> reporter: now, across the bay area, there are signs that the real estate market is improving. home sales in the bay area have increased 13 months in a row. the median price of a home here is $421,000, and that is up about 13% from last year. but again, here in this subdivision in the gayle ranch community of san ramon, the nine homes, remaining homes about to be built here, they go for sale at 10 a.m. people who have been camping out here for a week are

certainly hoping that their long wait is over, and that it will be worth it for them. live in san ramon. allie rasmus, k.t.v.u. ongoing troubles are turning president obama's oakland campaign office into a bunker. [ crowd yelling ] >> everybody to the back. everybody to the back. everybody to the back. >> reporter: protestors posted this video on youtube showing them taking over the building thursday night. they were demonstrating against the administration's prosecution of army private bradley manning in the wikileaks case. police eventually arrested six protesters. the campaign office is now under tighter security. and volunteers were ushered in through a back door to make sure the protesters are kept out. >> i got an e-mail about making -- i e-mailed my picture ahead of time to let them know that i was a regular volunteer. >> neighboring merchants worry their businesses will be vandalized in future demonstrations. five of the six protesters have been released. the other is held on a parole violation. they all face trespassing

charges. all right. happening now, we'll go back to the campaign trail. republican vice presidential candidate, you can see paul ryan there, campaigning in florida. medicare, social security, big issues and florida has a big senior community, a large and influential voting block. let's listen in to what he has to say. >> it's what my grandma had. you see, like a lot of people, and i see some wisconsin hats all around here [ crowd cheering ] >> wow. that's a pretty good showing. >> ohio! >> hey, pat. we have this rule in wisconsin, it's kind of an unwritten rule. you turn 65, you got to go south for the winter. [ laughter ] >> we call them snow birds. my mom's a snow bird. she is a florida resident. she lives just down the road over near lauderdale and she like so many people here, she comes down here for the winter. just like so many folks from all over the country do. you know, my grandma moved in

with us, with my mom and me, when i was in high school. she had advanced alzheimer's. my mom and i were her two primary care givers. you learn a lot about life, you learn a lot about your -- your elderly, seniors in your family. you learn a lot about alzheimer's. medicare was there for our family, for my grandma, when we needed it then. and medicare is there for my mom while she needs it now. and we have to keep that guarantee. well, let's turn to some other news. >> an oakland teenager shot and killed last week will be laid to rest today. 16-year-old tatian turner had just given birth to a girl in november. turner was with a group of friends outside a liquor store when she was shot. her funeral service shots at 11 a.m. at the fuller funeral home in oakland. tragedy struck her family once before. turner's father was killed when she was 12. the baby is now living with an aunt and uncle. volunteers will hold another search today for a missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. this morning congressman jerry mcnerney will join the search. she was last seen leaving her school on the morning of march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia torres has been charged with her kidnapping and murder but her body hasn't been found. volunteers will be searching along the american river in sacramento today for a admission u.c. davis student lanea lomax went missing nearly two months ago.

she was last seen leaving a doctor's appointment. anyone interested in helping with the search today or tomorrow is being asked to show up at the search command post which is located on glendale lane in sacramento. the search will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. santa fe police are investigating the tragic downing of a three-year-old girl. it happened last night on blue jacket way. police say the little girl fell into a family swimming pool. she was pulled out of the water and given c.p.r. but died at santa clara valley medical center. a prayer service will be held in southern california today for two young brothers swept away by a driver during a trip to yosemite. the boys wading in the merced river when they were both swept downstream. the body of 10-year-old andres adams are found a day later and crews are looking for six-year- old jacob who is presumed drowned. pet owners in davenport are being warned to keep their pets inside at night after a

mountain lion killed a cat. the attack happened last friday near marine view avenue. officials also recommend bringing pet food inside at night, and say homeowners might consider installing motion sensitive lights. mountain lions are solitary animals that typically avoid people. if you do encounter a mountain lion, experts recommend making noise, trying to loom large, and backing up slowly. a show-down between environmentalists and chevron could lien to a prolonged period of high gas prices. environmental groups tell us they see an opportunity to make the richmond refinery that caught fire this month much safer and cleaner. it emits the most greenhouses gasses of any bay area refinery. chevron is reportedly resisting renovations in order to preserve exceptions to the refinery that they enjoy now san francisco police will limit entry to yerba buena island today trying to prevent an illegal rave from happening. police say any rave on the

and could be fully contained by tomorrow. but the national weather service says thunderstorms are in the forecast and lightning could spark additional fires. military tech knock used on the battle field may soon help -- technology used on the battlefield may soon help firefighters in southern california gain control of wildfires. it's called the next generation incident command system. and it's being developed in cooperation with homeland security and m.i.t. lab and san diego gas and electric. during testing in san diego county, cal fire says an infrared camera mounted on a cal fire spotter plane helped direct aerial jobs where they were most effective. cal fire hopes to have the system up and running by the middle of next month. we're learning more information about the deadly house fire we reported yesterday on mornings on 2. versus investigators believe that fire started in an upstairs bedroom, killed were 73-year-old joseph rodriguez, and his bedridden partner, 89- year-old leo lane. they were asleep in separate rooms when that fire broke out.

although investigators still don't know what sparked that fire, they say eight-foot piles of clutter fueled the blaze. the men used to sell collectibles at the flea market battle this morning when it comes to the state prison population. the state filed a legal brief calling the prospects of early releases unwarranted. a panel of judges had given california until june of next year to shrink its prison population. the state lawyers have recently admitted they expect to miss the target. this state has already reduced its prison population by requiring low-level offenders to serve their time in county jails instead of state prisons. since last october, the prison population has dropped by 24,000 inmates. there are new developments this morning in syria. nighttime infrared video shows a gun battle over the capitol city of damascus. government forces heavily shelled several neighborhoods and clashed with opposition fighters. the last u.n. observers still in syria have started to leave the country as their mission

troopers finally stopped him with a spiked strip. when they looked inside his vehicle they found his wife and four children who were passengers. his wife was crying and told troopers please do not hurt my children. well, some good samaritans saved two sisters from a burning car in mississippi. >> back up. back up. >> the fire had smashed through some trees and caught fire. without concern for their own well-being, good samaritans grabbed fire extinguishers from their cars and started to put out those flames. >> she was pinned by the steering wheel and by the seat and by the pillars that were bashed in from the side, by the trees. and no one could get her out. the flames were getting higher and higher. [ sirens ] >> the one woman strapped in the car was disabled, but rescuers eventually pried her out. she suffered minor injuries, but she is going to recover. a strong warning to parents this morning from the government. they want you to look before you lock.

this comes after an increase in the number of deaths from children left unattended in hot cars. according to the u.s. department of transportation, at least 23 children have died this summer after being left in hot vehicles. when temperatures reach the low 80s outside, the temperature inside a car can reach 100 degrees or more in a matter of minutes. children's bodies overheat up to five times faster than adults. if you think weather delays are bad, imagine being on this nightmare flight. we're talk about an air france flight that made an unscheduled landing in the volatile capitol of syria, and then the crew asked the passengers if they could help with the costs of refueling. that plane was originally headed to beirut but was unable to land because of unrest there. air france's passengers were asked if they had cash only as a precaution, because sanctions prevented the damascus airport from accepting credit cards. the crew did manage to refuel without using the passengers' money, and the pilot did land the plane safely in cypress.

in a fenced-off dirt area. the driver suffered female injuries, but her female passenger died at the scene. the driver told chp she had fallen asleep at the wheel. the identities of the two women haven't been released, but they are said to be in their twenties. a manhunt continues this morning for 34-year-old derek sanders, first reported missing early yesterday morning. he was a patient at cordleras mental health services in redwood city, east of 280 off edgewood road. staffers making the rounds first noticed the escape. san mateo county sheriff's office thinks sanders may have fled right through an elevator shaft. a county wide alert was sent out to law enforcement agencies and to an advisory to people living in the area. >> he has prior sex offense in his history. the fact that he has also sex offense with minors is definitely high risk in our community. >> and these are both photos of sanders. the sheriff's department says the one there on the right is

closest to what he looks like now. he's 5' 11, 165 pounds, and was last wearing a red polo shirt and blue jeans. he was -- he has family in san mateo and alameda counties. fan violence marred last night's football game between the oakland raiders and the arizona cardinals. a fight broke out between two men outside the stadium. one man shot the other in the face, according to police. the victim in, his thirties, is in critical, but stable condition with life threatening injuries. police did arrest the gunman. the incident happened during the third quarter of the game. no other fans were injured and the cardinals won 31-27. a memorial service will be held today for a marine killed in afghanistan. 29-year-old marine captain matthew minoken lived california. he had graduated from st. francis high school in mountain view. today's service is going to be inside the school's gym at 3:00

and more than 1000 people are expected to attend that service, which will include a 21-gun salute and military flyover. well, we're learning that a lake county man was among the troops killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. 23-year-old richard essex died on thursday when the army blackhawk helicopter was gunned down. six other american troops also died. a public service will be held for essex on september 1st. police are looking for a man who in an apparent fit of road rage struck a bicyclist in santa rosa. it happened thursday night at the oakmont golf course. the bicyclist told police a gray-haired man pulled up alongside him on a nearby roadway and started screaming. police say the driver chased the cyclist right onto the golf course and then rear ended him. the victim suffered moderate injuries. officers say the car is a gold or beige sedan that may have a broken passenger's side mirror. 8:04. just got an update on the wildfire burning in lake county.

by moody's credit agency. so far, three california cities have filed for bankruptcy just this year. those cities are stockton, san bernardino and man mouth lakes. more agencies are likely to file because many cities are still struggling with deep budget cuts. san jose had to close libraries and lay off police officers to cut costs. moody's says that's a similar story in other cities as well who have been forced to borrow from lending agencies. the doors are open for veterans of all ages at a resource fair in hayward today. that fair is from 10:00 to 12:30 at the veterans memorial building on main street. there will be information and resources and it is all free. nasa's curiosity rover will fire a laser on mars today. curiosity landed on the red planet back on august 5th. today, the laser will be used to burn a small hole in a generic-looking rock 10 feet away. yesterday, the rover underwent a full checkup ahead of the

the nation's jobless rate is lower, but did tick up to 8.3% last month. well, here's a breakdown for the bay area. all nine counties are below the statewide average, and only solano county is in double digits at 10.3%. marin county has the lowest unemployment rate, followed by san mateo and san francisco. police in east palo alto are crediting a crime suppression unit with dozens of arrests. police say the unit that targets violent offenders has resulted in at least 45 arrests in its first month in existence. the program is a partnership with menlo park in an effort to cut down on gang and drug activity that involves both cities. >> kind of have an idea who is out here doing what. sometimes we'll park and we'll watch it. >> police estimate 90% of the arrests have been for felony offenses. questions remain about a suspicious item that caused quite a scare in a palo alto

neighborhood. residents found the device on maplewood avenue yesterday and they describe it as a soda bottle wrapped in a gauze-like fabric with metal clamps around it. a bomb squad was called out and a robot ended up destroying the device. police later determined it was something used to make drugs, but still trying to figure out who put it there. there is a battle brewing this morning when it comes to the state's prison population. the state found the legal brief yesterday calling the prospect of early releases unwarranted. a panel of judges had given california until june of next year to shrink its prison population. state lawyers have recently admitted they expect to miss the target. the state has already reduced its prison population by requiring low level offenders to serve their time in county jails instead of state prisons. a salmonella outbreak in melons is being blamed for making at least two people from california sick. those melons were grown in indiana and kentucky. two people have died and nearly 15 others have gotten sick from

the outbreak nationwide. this recent salmonella outbreak comes after cantelope contaminated with listeria killed many last year. west nile aerial spraying took place in dallas, texas. but rain cut the effort short. the state is experiencing its worst year of the virus. so far, 10 people have been killed and at least 200 others have gotten sick. more aerial spraying is scheduled for monday. this is the first time the city has authorized aerial spraying of insecticide in more than 45 years. in california, another human case of west nile has been reported in sutter county, the first human case of the virus in that county in more than five years. 32 out of the 58 counties in the state have reported west nile virus activity. 12 counties have reported human cases and in the north bay, officials detected four more cases of west nile virus.

three dead birds tested positive in sonoma county and another bird tested positive in marin county. researchers at oklahoma yferred are making progress on a vaccine that could help save lives. researchers say they found a way to isolate strains of the west nile virus even though they are in the process of developing a vaccine, but it could be a while before it gets approved since it needs to go through years of testing. >> we know that we can do it and we know through lab models, it looks like it can protect against infection. researchers say funding vaccines could be hard to come by, but with the recent spike in west nile cases, they hope the development of the vaccine will be a top priority. a san diego company, solar rain in valley center says making drinking water from sea water can make sensabaugh it does not deplete reservoirs or other sources of freshwater. solar rain also says its water benefits the environment. its bottles are biodegradable

. there's a growing debate about a san francisco program that allows residents to turn parking spots into -- parklets are a way to introduce parks into urban areas. >> with the parklets, private citizens can basically fund public parks. >> but some people say they want limits on the number of parklets, because they are taking away valuable parking spots. the city plans to issue its next round of parklet permits in the fall. right now, there are no limits in place for the number of parklets. it is an interesting debate. i do see both sides, because i like the idea of little parks, but i hate driving around 20, 30 minutes in certain pockets of the city.

. san mateo county law enforcement, on the lookout this morning after a convicted sex offender escapes from a mental health facility. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> authorities call the suspect, 34-year-old derek sanders a high risk offender. he broke out of the cordilleros center in redwood city sometime between late thursday night and early friday morning. investigators think he may have escaped through an elevator shaft. a county-wide alert was sent out to law enforcement and an

advisory to people living in that area. sanders does have a criminal record, which includes sex offenses and offenses with minors. in oakland, teenager shot and killed last week will be laid to rest today. 16-year-old tatian turner had just given birth to a baby girl in november. turner was with a group of friends outside a liquor store when she was shot. her funeral service today starts at 11:00 a.m. at the fuller funeral home in oakland. turner's father was murdered when she was just 12. her baby is now living with an aunt and uncle. volunteers will hold another search today for a missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. and this morning, congressman jerry mcernie joins the search. the 15-year-old was last seen leaving for school on the morning of march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres has been charged with kidnapping and her murder, but her body has never been found. a showdown between environmentalists and chevron could lead to a prolonged period of high gas prices.

environmental groups tell the contra costa times they see an opportunity to make the richmond refinery that caught fire earlier this month much cleaner and safer. the environmental group say that refinery emits the most greenhouse gases of any bay area refinery, but chevron is reportedly resisting major renovations in order to preserve exceptions the century-old refinery enjoys. the oil company accuses environmentalists of stymieing job creation. san jose police are investigating the tragic drowning of a 3-year-old girl. it happened yesterday night on blue jacket way near bran bury way. the little girl fell into the family swimming pool. she was pulled from the water and given cpr, but died at santa clara valley medical center. a prayer service will be held in southern california today for two young brothers swept away by the river during a trip to yosemite. the boys were wading in the merced river on wednesday when they were both swept downstream. the body of 10-year-old andres adams was found a day later. crews are still looking for

6-year-old jacob, who is presumed dead. the boys were on a family trip from orange county. we are learning more information about the deadly house fire we reported on yesterday's mornings on 2. investigators now believe the fire started in an upstairs bedroom, where joseph rodriguez and his bedridden partner leo lane were asleep in separate rooms when the fire broke out. although investigators still don't know what sparked the fire, they say 8-foot piles of clutter fueled the blaze. the men used to sell collectibles at the flea market. san francisco police are going to limit yerba buena today, trying to prevent an illegal rave on the island, because they require special permits. the department has notified the highway patrol and the coastguard. young people waiting in line for a concert yesterday in mountain view say they know how to stay safe at raves. >> you don't take anything from anyone you don't know and you just don't do drugs. i mean, like, you just enjoy the

a fun time. >> is it a way to get the kids back into school mode after the long summer break? >> it's a way to get them excited, make sure they are prepared, self esteem is intact, and they feel like they have the tools they need to be prepared and ready for success for the school year. >> reporter: and what need is there in the community for school supplies? it is expensive for families. do you see there's more of a need now than in past years? >> yes, absolutely. we had over 550 people preregister for the event. knowing there are a thousand backpacks and school supplies for the families, first come, first served, last year, there were only 330 that preregistered. we find that it's an overwhelming need this year, more than any other year. this is our fifth annual event. i think that just the sense that i get from the community is that we have to work harder to try to meet as many needs as we can with the families. >> reporter: and is there more space for people who want to come down this morning? >> absolutely. we have roughly about 400 more tickets to give away. it's free. it's a completely free event. we have food, drinks, fun times.

. good morning to you. a live look over walnut creek this morning. mostly cloudy skies, turning mostly sunny as we progress through the morning hours. monsoonal moisture hanging around the area this morning. well, hundreds of people forced to evacuate because of a devastating wildfire in washington state are going to return home today to survey the damage. the taylor bridge fire in central washington has destroyed at least 70 homes and burned more than 35 square miles since it started on monday. the fire is 40% contained and could be fully contained by tomorrow. but the national weather service says thunderstorms are in the

forecast and light nij could spark additional fires. military technology used on the battlefield may soon help firefighters in southern california gain control of wildfires there. it's called the next generation incident command system and it's being developed in cooperation with homeland security and mit lab, and san diego gas and electric. during testing in san diego county, calfire says an infrared camera mounted on a calfire spotter plane helped direct aerial drops where they were most effective. calfire hopes to have the system up and running by the middle of next month. tropical storm helene is expected to make landfall in mexico sometime today, expected to hit the northern part of vera cruz. the storm is bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the area already recovering from hurricane ernesto last week. flood damage from that storm left 10,000 people searching for new homes. another round of rain today could cause more flash flooding in parts of southern california. flood watches were issued for

parts of san bernardino county yesterday, after fast-moving thunderstorms dumped heavy rain in the area. several roads were blocked. no serious damage or injuries were reported, but one fire department did have to rescue several people trapped on hiking trails. new developments this morning in syria. nighttime infrared video shows a gun battle over the capital city of damascus. meanwhile, the last u.n. observers still in syria have started to leave that country, as their mission officially ends at midnight tonight, syrian time. syrian leaders say they approved the choice of an allgeierian diplomat to replace kofi annan, after he quit this month after his peace plan fell apart. in chile, students continue to storm schools throughout that country. they used chairs to block entrances. chile's president is condemning the occupation. protesters say the country's education system is in ruin,

with poor quality public schools, expensive private universities, unprepared teachers, and high interest college loans that many people just can't afford. john lennon's convicted killer is up for parole for the seventh time. mark david chapman may be questioned by the new york parole board as early as tuesday. chapman was convicted of killing lennon outside his manhattan apartment building on december 8, 1980. the 57-year-old chapman is serving a sentence of 20 years to life. he was last denied parole in 2010. support is pouring in from western nations for a female punk band sentenced to two years in prison for a protest at a russian orthodox church. supporters rallied outside the russian embassy in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood, calling for the women to be freed. >> band members were convicted of howl begannism, motivated by religious hatred, for singing and dancing at the altar of moscow's cathedral in february. the band says it held the

trees. and no one could get her out. the flames were getting higher and higher. >> and that one woman stuck in the car was disabled, but rescuers were eventually able to pry her out. she suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover. and there's eye-opening video coming out of the state of utah as well. the highway patrol chased after a suspected drunk driving, reaching speeds of 115 miles an hour. the driver, 30-year-old robert hills, got out of his car. but when he feared getting arrested, he went back into his van and sped off. troopers finally stopped him with a spike strip and when they looked inside his vehicle, hills' wife and four children were inside. his wife was crying and told troopers, please do not hurt my children. some air france passengers are complaining after the flight crew asked them to help with the cost of refueling. that flight was headed from paris to beirut on wednesday, but then it made an unscheduled landing in the volatile capital of damascus, syria, because of

unrest near the beirut airport. air france passengers say they were then asked if they had cash, only as precaution because sanctions prevented the damascus airport from accepting credit cards for few. the crew did manage to refuel without using passengers' funds and the pilot did land safely in cyprus. well, southwest airlines is hiking fares. all one-way flights of less than 500 miles will now be $05 more expensive. the flights account for about a third of southwest routes. the company cites higher operating costs for the fare increases. other airlines are expected to match the increase. railys announced it is closing more northern california stores and one is right here in the bay area. the company has decided to shut down the store on buchanon road in pittsburg. 70 will be left without a job. the company says the employees will be possibly transferred to other locations. a decline in sales is being blamed for the closure. the bats came alive to get

more than 1000 people are expected to attend the service, which will include a 21-gun salute and a military flyover. we are learning that in lake county, a man was killed -- a lake county man was killed in that helicopter crash in afghanistan. 23-year-old richard essex died on thursday when the army blackhawk helicopter he was in was gunned down. six other american troops also died. a public service for essex will be held on september 1st at kelseyville high school in kelseyville. well, happening now, firefighters are trying to put out a barn fire, just south of santa rosa. the fire is happening on todd road. no injuries have been reported, but we are getting word that at least a quarter mile of that road is blocked off. . in overnight news, highway patrol says drowsy driving may be to blame for a deadly wreck in the east bay. it happened around 12:20 this morning near the burnle avenue exit on interstate 680 in

pleasanton. a convertible with two people inside veered off the roadway, through bushes and ended up in a dirt fenced-off area. the driver suffered minor injuries, but her female passenger died at the scene. the driver told highway patrol she had fallen asleep behind the wheel. the identities of the two women have not been released, but they are said to be in their twenties. a manhunt resumes this morning for a high risk sex offender who escaped a peninsula mental health facility. 34-year-old derek sanders was first reported missing early yesterday morning. he was a patient at the cordilleras mental health services in redwood city, just east of interstate 280 off of edgewood road. staffers making first rounds noticed he had escaped. the sheriff's office says it thinks sanders may have fled through an elevator shaft. deputies sent out a county-wide alert to law enforcement and an advisory two people living in the area. >> he has prior sex offense in his history. the fact that he has also sex offense with minors is

definitely high risk in our community. >> and these are both photos of sanders. the sheriff's department says the one on the right is closest to what he looks like now. he's 5' 11, 165 pounds, and was last wearing a red polo shirt and blue jeans. he has family in san mateo and alameda counties. fan violence marred last night's football game between the raiders and the cardinals. a fight broke out between two men in the parking lot outside the stadium near glendale, arizona. police say one man shot the other in the face. the victim is in his thirties, in critical condition with life threatening injuries. police arrested the gunman. the incident happened during the third quarter of the game. no other fans were injured and the cardinals won the game 31-27. an oakland teenager shot and killed last week will be laid to rest today. 16-year-old tatian turn her just given birth to a girl back in november. turner was with a group of friends outside a liquor store when she was shot. her funeral service starts today at 11:00 at the fuller funeral

home in oakland. tragedy has struck her family before. turner's father was murdered when she was 12. her baby is now living with an aunt and uncle. volunteers will hold another search today for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. this morning, a congressman joins the search. the 15-year-old was last seen leaving for school on the morning of march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres has been charged with her kidnapping and murder, but the search for sierra lamar continues. the class kids foundation and other volunteers will be searching along the american river in sacramento today for a missing uc davis student. she went missing nearly two months ago, last seen leaving a doctors appointment. anyone interested in helping with the search today or tomorrow is being asked to show up at the search command post, which is located on glendale lane in sacramento. the search will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

californians out of work. a year ago, the unemployment rate in the state was at 111.9%. the nation's jobless rate is lower compared to california's, but it did tick up to 8.3% last month. and here is the breakdown in the bay area. all nine counties are below the statewide average and only solano county is in double digits at 10.3%. marin county continues to have the lowest unemployment rate, followed by san mateo and san francisco. more california cities are at risk of bankruptcy. that's according to a new study by moody's credit agency. so far, three california cities have filed for bankruptcy just this year. those cities are stockton, san bernardino and man mouth lakes. but the rating agencies says more cities are likely to file because many cities are still struggling with deep budget cuts. san jose closed libraries and laid off police officers to cut costs. that's the story in similar cities as well, forced to borrow from lending agencies. happening now, kids in oakland getting a special treat

mother, betty, to blunt criticism from democrats that republican presidency will gut programs for older americans. a new report could fan the controversy regarding how much romney pays in taxes. an associated press survey shows ryan paid a higher federal tax rate than romney, the multimillionaire. for example, in 2010, ryan paid 15.9%, while romney, just below 14%. last year, ryan's rate was 20% compared to romney's 15.4. meanwhile, ryan and his wife earned more than $323,000 last year, and they paid $65,000 in federal taxes. romney earned about 21 million and he paid $3.2 million in federal taxes. on the democratic side, president obama is campaigning in new hampshire this morning. he has a busy week ahead with a speech on tuesday at a community college in reno. >> that's why we've invested

sounded like a disgruntled worker and had referenced new sylvester stallone film "the expendables 2". >> if you got something against somebody, take it on one on one against the person, not the masses of people. >> something has to be wrong with the person. >> no bombs were found and theaters reopened late in the afternoon. that chain does not have any theaters here in the bay area. the fbi has taken over the investigation. the fight against west nile continues this morning in dallas, texas. another round of aerial spraying took place last night, but rain cut the effort short. the state is experiencing its worst year of the virus. so far, 10 people have been killed and at least 200 other people have gotten sick. more aerial spraying is scheduled for monday. this is the first time the city has authorized aerial spraying of insecticide in more than 45 years. now, here in california, another human case of west nile has been reported in sutter county. it's the first human case of the virus that is in that county in

more than five years. 32 out of the 58 counties in the state have reported west nile virus activity. 12 counties have reported human cases. and in the north bay, officials detected four more cases of west nile virus. three birds tested positive in sonoma county and another bird tested positive in marin county. researchers at oklahoma university are a making progress on a vaccine that could help save lives. researchers say they found a way to isolate strains of the west nile virus. even though they are in the process of developing a vaccine, it could be a while before it gets approved because it needs to go through years of testing. >> we know that we can do it and we know through lab models that it can actually -- looks like it can protect against infection. >> researchers say funding for the vaccine could be hard to come by, but with the recent spike in west nile cases, they are hoping the development of the vaccination would be a top priority. new this morning, a bill is

being considered to help wounded veterans start families. the bill would expand coverage for in vitro fertilization. it would benefit soldiers with pelvic or spinal cord injuries. the department of veteran affairs currently covers some procedures to help veterans conceive, but it does not cover in vet row fertilization. veterans of all ages can get the help they need at a resource fair in hayward today, from 10:00 until 12:30 in the afternoon. it's at the veterans memorial building on main street and there will be information and a number of different resources available, and it is all free. a san diego area company is turning sea water into bottled water. solar rain in valley center says making drinking water from the ocean makes sense, because it does not deplete reservoirs or other sources of freshwater. solar rain also says its water benefits the environment. its bottles are biodegradable and can be recycled. >> we're absolutely the only and

most sustainable green bottled water company in the world. >> the company also says ocean-sourced water has a balance of naturally occurring minerals, like potassium, magnesium, and calcium. well, there's a growing debate about a san francisco program that allows residents to turn parking spots into tiny parks. sponsors pay the city several thousand dollars to rent the spaces and turn them into cafe seating or green space. supporters say the parklets are a way to introduce parks into urban areas. >> with the parklets, private citizens can basically fund public parks. >> but on the flipside, some people say they want limits on the number of parklets because they are taking away valuable parking spots. the city plans to issue its next round of parklet permits in the fall and currently has no limits in place for the number of parklets. the organizers of the burning manifest value filed a lawsuit against the nevada county area for a fee increase.

of the canyon are trying to save their post office. residents say the canyon post office provides service beyond route and mail. emergency responders often turn to postal employees for directions because many residents lack conventional addresses. cell phones and gps devices also typically don't work in the rural community, which is between muraga and oakland. the canyon office is one of 13,000 post offices nationwide that could see their hours cut. the postal service wants to cut the canyon branch's hours from 8:00 to 6:00 per day. well, the canyon office is one of the 13,000, as we said, that could see those changes. so we'll keep an eye on that for you and keep you updated on that ongoing debate. a showdown between environmentalists and chevron could lead to a prolonged period of high gas prices. environmental groups tell the contra costa times they see an opportunity to make the richmond refinery that caught fire earlier this month much safer and cleaner. chevron is reportedly resisting

today for two young brothers swept away by a river during a trip to yosemite. the boys were wading in the merced river on wednesday, when they were both swept downstream. the body of 10-year-old andres adams was found a day later. but crews are still looking for his 6-year-old brother jacob, who is presumed drowned. the boys were on a family trip from orange county. pet owners in davenport are being warned to keep their pets inside at night, after a mountain lion killed a cat. the attack happened last friday near marine view avenue. officials also recommend bringing pet food inside at night and say homeowners might want to consider installing motion sensitive lights. mountain lions are solitary animals that typically avoid people. if you do encounter a mountain lion, experts recommend making noise, try to loom large, and back away slowly. ongoing troubles are turning president obama's oakland campaign office into a bunker. >> get out of here! >> everybody to the back, everybody to the back! everybody to the back! >> protesters posted this video

. good morning to you. there in the distance, you can see the low cloud deck reforming along the coast. mostly blue skies over parts of the bay and that tropical moisture from this morning, slowly moving east. well, let's recap some of the top stories we are following this morning. a memorial service will be held today for a marine killed in afghanistan. 29-year-old marine captain matthew minukan lived in south latos hills. he was killed last week in afghanistan while on his fourth tour of duty. and a fan was shot at a raiders game against the cardinals last night. a fight broke out between the two men in the parking lot outside the stadium near glendale, arizona. police say one man shot the area in the face. the victim, who is in his 30s, is now in critical condition. volunteers are going to hold another search today for missing morgan hill teenager, sierra lamar. a congressman will join the effort today. the 15-year-old was last seen leaving for school on the morning of march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres has been charged with her kidnapping and murder.

happening now, students in oakland are getting a special treat as they get ready to hit the books this coming school year. ktvu's allie rasmus, live at frank ogawa plaza where a thousand backpacks will be handed out today. getting crowd order there, allie? >> reporter: it is getting a little more crowded. the backpacks are free, but parents and kids have to invest a little bit of time here before they can get their hands on those free supplies. right now, there is a group of about a couple hundred people here at frank ogawa plaza. people are waiting for the day-long event to begin. they are gathering for music and some of the opening ceremonies here. later on, they will be having workshops here at frank ogawa plaza and oakland city hall. some people lined up as early as 7:00 this morning to register. the nonprofit group oakland natives gives back has organized this backpack giveaway five years in a row. a thousand kids will get a backpack loaded with school supplies later this afternoon, around 3:30. but first, the students and parents have to go through some workshops. workshops are on topics like eating healthy, staying focused,

workshop for parents on getting more involved with their kids, and for the older high school kids, there are classes and tips on getting the ready for college. organizers have seen an increase in demand for this event. this year, 200 more parents and kids registered in advance to be here. >> we've definitely seen an increase as the years go by. maybe it's because of popularity, but i think it definitely ties to the need in the community and folks really feeling like it is the supplies and the need for their children is starting to hit them in the pocket. >> reporter: now, organizers say they still have space for more kids and parents to show up today. they will be giving out a total of a thousand backpacks for kids, ages kindergarten through twelfth grade. this is at frank ogawa plaza. if you wan to be part of the event, get one of the free

backpacks. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2. the taylor bridge fire in central washington has destroyed at least 70 homes and burned more than 35 square miles since it started monday. that fire is 40% contained and could be fully contained by tomorrow, but the national weather service says thunderstorms are in the forecast and lightning could spark additional fires. a community group is fighting a plan to put up billboards near the redevelopment of the oakland army base in west oakland. five billboards are slated to pop up along the bay bridge toll plaza and interstate 80 near west grand avenue. three of the billboards will have brightly-lit led screens. a proposed deal guarantees the city of oakland at least $350,000 a year if all five billboards go up. but a group called no new billboards in oakland says the billboards would add blight to the city. well, strong warning to parents this morning from the government. they want you to look before you

lock. this comes after an increase in the number of children left unattended in hot cars. according to the u.s. department of transportation, at least 23 children have died this summer after being left in hot cars. when temperatures reach the low 80s outside, the temperature inside a car can reach 100 degrees or more in a matter of just 10 minutes. children's bodies overheat five times faster than adults. the america's cup races are still a year away, but racing enthusiasts will get a preview next week during the america's cup world series on the san francisco bay. 45-foot catamarans could be seen slicing right through the water yesterday during a test sail out on the bay. 11 catamarans from eight different countries will be competing for top honors. >> best boat, best competitors. >> the first event in the world series starts wednesday. spectators can watch for free along the marina green, where an america's cup village will be set up, complete with big screen tvs and you can head to ktvu.com

. new this morning, general motors and isuzu are recalling more than 258,000 suvs in the u.s. and canada. the automakers say short circuits in the power windows and door lock switches can cause fires. the recall covers chevrolet trailblazers, gmc envoys, buick rainier, isuzu offenders, and the saudi arabia 97-x from 2006 and 2007 model years. gm has received reports of 28 fires, but has not confirmed any injuries. the recall affects vehicles sold in 26 states. vehicles sold in california are not included in the recall. well, turning to other news now, let's talk about the melons and salmonella, because that is a big problem. they are talking about an outbreak blamed for making at least two people from california sick. those melons were grown in

indiana and kentucky. two people have died. 15 others have gotten sick from the outbreak nationwide. this recent salmonella outbreak comes after cantelope contaminated with listeria killed 30 people in 11 states last year. it was the deadliest u.s. food-borne outbreak in more than a decade. some air france passengers are complaining after the flight crew asked them to pull out their wallets and help pay for fuel. the flight was heading from paris to beirut on wednesday, but made an unscheduled landing in the volatile capital of damascus, syria because of unrest near the beirut airport. passengers were asked if they had cash, only as a precaution, because sanctions prevented the damascus airport from accepting credit cards. the crew did manage to refuel without using passengers' funds and the pilot landed the plane safely in cyprus. well, you are going to have to dig a little deeper to pay for some southwest airlines flights. the carrier announced $5 hike on all one-way flights of less than
