debate. >> mitt romney's vp pick issues a challenge to president obama, how paul ryan is using family to back him up. complete bay area coverage starts right now. this is kutv channel news at 6:00. >> i'm heather holmes. >> i'm john sasaki, in for ken wayne. >> we begin with breaking news out of san francisco. several people on the bay are being rescued near candlestick point. the san francisco fire department tells us fire and coast guard crews rushed to pull people out of water. there are reports of people were anyway rowboat or possibly kayaks. we don't know the victims' conditions. if we receive more details on the rescue we'll bring it to you during the newscast. hundreds came together to say farewell to captain manoukian, who was killed in the line of duty in afghanistan last week and tonight his friends and family are remembering the man and celebrating his life.

ktvu's patti lee joins us live from outside of the funeral where manoukian is being honored. >> reporter: matthew manoukian graduated from this high school back in 2001 and right now during the services he was described as a decent satellite who had grown- up to become an extraordinary leader and a teacher, who embodied the hope and the courage this community now needs to carry on. a procession of cars and people, streamed into st. francis high school in mountainview. >> hard to go forward. >> reporter: an estimated 1300 people filled the auditorium, to remember the 29-year-old matthew manoukian, who was killed ten days ago an afghan police officer who invited him over for a meal and a meeting. >> not only was he martyred, but betrayed and he was a good, good boy. security was tight because of

the politically charged atmosphere surrounding manoukian's death and the guest list. at least a dozens judges a general and auxiliary bishop were in attendance. the manoukians are a high- profile family community. last captain's parents are both judges, his father with the santa clara superior court and his mother an associate with the state appeals court. both wanted this service to be as private as possible, to honor the memory of a young man who paid the ultimate sacrifice. >> it's a tear in the community, but i want to say it brings everyone closer, but we're already close. >> reporter: now this service started around 3:00. it was supposed to end around 5:30, but it's running a little bit behind schedule. we're told that a 21-gun salute and military flyover should be coming up in next half-hour. . we're learning a 23-year- old soldier from lake county

institution is back in custody. someone recognized sanders panhandling at san francisco's fisherman's wharf and that person called police. sanders escape the redwood city facility yesterday morning. a bay area congressman met today with the volunteers who gathered to search for morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. more than 40 people canvassed an area that included the reservoir. 15-year-old sierra disappeared last march on her way to school. antolin garcia-torres was arrested in may and charged with killing her. now to our continuing coverage of the shell refinery fire in richmond. the company says there been cleaning up equipment at area parks as well, adding its understandable that parents are concerned. >> we wanted to make sure that parents had peace of mind when they sent their students back- to-school next week, that they would be eating on tables and

picnic tables that were clean and playing on playgrounds that were clean as well. >> the fire has given environmental gropes new ammunition to fight for complete modernization of the aging refinery. chevron refinery it's more than 100 years old and one of the biggest pollutes are in the area. collide trombettas accused the u.s. chemical safety board of giving out misleading information about corroded pipes. trombettas wrote, "that the board is scaring the public with half trudges and misleading investigation. ." the posting has since been taken down. a contra costa county sheriff reserves deputies say he was fired for breaking the police code of silence of the chronicle reports that howard

was incidenced this week without explanation. williams says he was fired in retaliation for reporting that he had witnessed a fellow deputy conduct a dirty dui arrest. williams reporting helped to lead to the indictment of tanabe. the latest dui crackdowns were made by san josi police who caught nine alleged drunk drivers. the san josi area chp cited six drivers and gelrey had four arrests. this crackdown continues until labor day in a joint effort between 13 santa clara county law enforcement agencies. firefighters across california are battling dozens of new wildfires sparked by a series of lightning strikes. >> the hardest hit area was in shasta county where more than a dozen fires broke out. right now the biggest fire is eat of redding. it has burned about 250 acres, but so far there are no reports

of damage or any evacuations. lightning hit parts of the bay area early this morning, coming up in ten minutes meteorologist mark tamayo tells us if we can expect more lightning in forecast. it could be game over for a silicon company once heralded as the future of on-line gaming. yesterday onlive laid off much of its staff and apparently ducked bankruptcy when an unnamed buyer acquired. it the palo alto-based company says it plans to rehire manufacture those manufacture -- many of those workers. the complaint says some features on iphones and ipads, such as digital assistance series infringe on motorola patents. the company is asking the international trade commission to ban import of those

. police say a man shot in the face near the raiders- cardinals preseason game last night is expected to to survive. that shooting happened in a parking lot north of the stadium in suburban phoenix. police say the violence appeared to be fan-based, but may have been accidental. the shooter was detained for questioning, but released pending further investigation. friends and family gathered today to say goodbye to a 16- year-old mother shot and killed last week in oakland. taiteanna turner was shot outside of a liquor store.

a memorial fund for the baby has been set up at u.s. bank. so far no one has been arrested in the killing and there is no word on the motive. police are offering a $15,000 reward for information in this case. aspiring home-buyers started to line up northeast bay nearly two weeks in advance waiting for 10:00 this morning when a new subdivision in san ramon put up nine new homes for sale. christien kafton. >> reporter: she knew exactly what home she wanted so she set up a tent and started to camp out august 6th to get her dream four-bed, four bath home with a view. >> i have been here for two weeks because of the particular plot that i'm interested in. it's the one with the view over there. >> reporter: she says a newly built home in the solaire subdivision is worth the mvp and time spent waiting fiscal quarter latest home offered bit developer. >> it's a good investment, and

well. in san ramon, christeen kafton,- ktvu channel 2 news. it was a day of celebration in oakland as parents and students gathers at a school that they saved from closure. lazear elementary was one of five schools slated to close. however, supporters of the school were able to get approval to convert to a charter school and keep it open. >> it's really an exciting point for the history of lazear and a real testimony for the power of the parents. >> classes at lazear begin next week and as a charter school it will now operator directly with the alameda county school board than the oakland unified school district. the heroses of two california- based regiments were honored today. the first group was a segregated u.s. army regiment made up of filipino-americans and until recently no one knew about them. >> those missions were kept

on. you can see right now fog hugging parts of san francisco. earlier this morning, somewhat of a different story. we had thunderstorms pop up across parts of north bay. you can see the latest radar, the bulk of the action just dissipating out to our north. we have the fog developing near parts of coast lien from half moon bay to pacifica and san francisco. this will be a factor as we head into overnight hours. late tonight into early sunday morning. as far as temperatures from this afternoon, they ranged from the -- you can see here 63 in pacifica. warmest locations inland in the 90s out towards fairfield and antioch. san josi 81. for tonight we have mostly clear skies, some coastal fog. temperatures tomorrow, not a big change. the extended definitely going to keep it cool for the beaches and temperatures in the inland spots, no major heat out there. warmest locations mainly in the 80s. overnight lows first thing

tonight the 49ers are in houston playing their second preseason game of the 2012 nfl season. it's just before halftime, the texans have just scored and lead the 49ers, 10-6. the raiders last night played their second preseason game in five days when they took on the arizona cardinals. sometimes objective no. 1 in the preseason is to keep everybody healthy. that part didn't go so well the. head shots supposed to be legislated out of the game. tell that to ricky lump kin, who was penalized for that late hit on leinert. the raiders lost 31-27, but a bright spot in both preseason is rod streater of the streater caught and of 19 passes in his senior year at temple. he had seven catches last night and six in the raiders first game against dallas. streater didn't come in with a lot of publicity, but he has got himself ready. >> i made sure i knew the
