"mornings on 2" starts now. . good morning and welcome to "mornings on 2". it is sunday, august 19, i am claudine wong. >> i am mike mibach. a little overcast. we will get over to rosemary. good morning, rosemary. it is a nice sunday at this hour waking up with patchy dense fog and visibility is down as well as the coastline. gray out there and turning gray by the afternoon. cooler start as well. mild to warm day in store for the second half. little change as we get into next week. i will have the numbers lined up for you coming up. gunfire erupted in oakland. in a span of 90 minutes, there were two separate shootings. allie rasmus is live now in oakland where they are dealing with more street violence.

>> reporter: the first of the two shootings happened after one on 51st and international. this is a drive-by shooting and this is five people were in the car. one was struck in the head. oakland police have no suspect or vehicle descriptions and one of the challenges they say is that the other vehicles of the drive-by shooting were not cooperating. there was more violence. a man standing outside the ballroom lounge was shot the shooting victim was age to get himself to the alameda hospital. oakland police have not released any information on the suspect right now. live in oakland at of of opd ahead quarters.

looking for a light colored sedan. we have some now video to show you of a spectacular car fire in oakland. they were shooting out the front hood of the vehicle. this happened at 11:00 last night and the opener blames the fire on mechanical problems. he said he was at a party when someone rushed in to tell him his car was on fire. >> he was rescued from the waters off candlestick point. >> 2-1-year-old boys cot stuck in a current when trying to retrieve a football in the water. >> they heard the calls for help and three of them also got caught up in the current. they responded and pulled everyone to shore. >> one person suffered hypothermia. and no injuries were reported. they are investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old boy. officers found the injured teenager on upon nome ma avenue noon and if he was spotted a block away and rushed to the

for several years, and luckily, no one was hurt. but firefighters are now trying to figure out if this fire is connected to other fires on that same street. in overnight news, two shootings less than two hours apart. right now police are looking for the suspects. the first happened just before 1:00 this morning in the area of 61st avenue and international boulevard. an officer say the gunman chased after a white car with five people inside. that car was left with bullet holes and its back window shot out. one person was reportedly hit in the head and rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the other shooting happened around 2:15 this morning. a man was shot outside a business near 92nd and international. police say the victim was shot in the neck, as well as the chest. it does not appear the shootings are related. both suspects are still on the loose. san jose police are investigating their 28th homicide of the year, just after 5:00 this morning, police

found a man shot to death on van sanzel avenue near south winchester boulevard. police are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. no arrests have been made. three nato service members were killed this morning in a bomb attack that happened in eastern afghanistan. no further information about the bombing has been released. most of the troops in eastern afghanistan are u.s. soldiers, but there are some serving in that area from other countries. yesterday, defense secretary leon panetta and afghan president karzai discussed the rising number of insider attacks on american and other coalition troops. panetta says most of the attacks are carried out by afghan security forces. the defense secretary says he is encouraging karzai to perform better background checks on his recruits. so far this year, at least 24 american service members have been killed by afghan forces. our enemies have attempted to undermine the trust between

the coalition and afghan forces. >> the top commander in afghanistan is now ordering more security measures. those include troops keeping their weapons loaded at all times, in case of attack. a garden angel program is also in effect that calls for one or more unidentified soldiers to mon for afghan troops during -- monitor afghan troops during any mission or meeting. well, answer insider attack is blamed for the death of a marine from the south bay. last night nearly 1000 people gathered at st. francis high school in mountain view to remember matthew manukian. the 2009-year-old and three other marines were killed 11 days ago by an african insurgent posing as a police officer. >> he was doing what he really wanted to do. he was doing amazing things. we won't ever know what he was doing over there. >> after four tours of duty in afghanistan, manukian was supposed to come home in december and attend law school. tight security was in effect at the funeral because both of his parents are well-known judges.

the chief justice from the state supreme court and a santa clara district attorney were also in attendance. the three and a half hour ceremony concluded with a 21- gun salute. f.b.i. agents and a u.s. attorney will visit a sikh temple in fremont, the visit come 2 weeks after a gunman opened fire in a sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. he killed six people before turning the gun on himself. on thursday, first lady michelle obama will travel to oak creek and visit with the victims' families. a high-risk sex offender who broke out of a peninsula mental health facility is back in custody. 34-year-old derek sanders was spotted panhandling yesterday morning in the fisherman wharf area by someone who had seen news reports of his espe. sanders broke out of the mental health center in redwood city early pry morning. he has a history of violence and mental illness. he was there for treatment but also facing a sex offense charge involving a minor.

a warning for people heading to the hills above u.c. berkeley. police say a mountain lion and her cubs were spotted near the lawrence berkeley national laboratory. a sign at the gate says the mountain lions were seen early friday morning, and it does advise people to call 911 if they see one. police are also asking people to avoid isolated areas, and to not hike alone. one man who lives near that recent sighting area says people should take the warning seriously. >> oh, it's serious that there was a mother with cubs up there. i think everybody should know that. because you don't want to threaten a mountain lion that can't move fast, because of the cubs. >> some residents say it isn't unusual to see a mountain lion in the area. two years ago, police say they were forced to shoot one that made its way into the backyard of a home located near that lab. the little league team from petaluma is two hours away from facing one of its biggest

good morning to you. a live look at berkeley. the city aquatic park. drive looking good this morning. gray skies, quiet conditions. a major rainstorm in dallas, texas has stranded drivers and caused a building's roof to collapse. the rain came down in sheets yesterday, flooding areas that don't normally flood, and it was too much for the building you're looking at there. that roof collapsed and the windows were blown out. it happened just one day after the store was full of children shopping for school supplies. no injuries have been reported. in election 2012 news, president obama will speak at a community college in reno on tuesday. meanwhile, both he and mitt romney are focusing on the battle ground state of new hampshire. the president campaigned there yesterday. that event was held inside a packed high school gymnasium. president obama talked about

resting place for unidentified victims of september 11th is going back to court. a group of family members of 9/11 victims is appealing a judge's decision that blocks them from gaining access to the addresses and phone numbers of other families. the group says it wants to find and poll more families in order to get their opinion on where the final resting place should be. a spokesman for the group says as of now, it would like to see the ramos of the victims encased in a tomb above ground but right now the plan is to put the remains underground in the national memorial museum. a bible used at ground zero is now providing comfort to people in aurora, colorado. yesterday a prayer vigil was held for the 12 people shot and killed during the movie theater shooting last month. at the vigil was a bible the chaplain gave to a 9/11 first responder to help him deal with the grief. since then, it has traveled with the group called 9/11 first responders to other cities coping with tragedies.

tomorrow marks one month since the colorado shooting that also left 58 people injured. 34 kids are heading back to class tomorrow, and while elementary and middle school enrollment is up, high school enrollment is starting to fall in san francisco. preliminary enrollment figures show about 57,000 students for the new school year. that's up 650 students from last year. but most of that increase is coming from kids in kindergarten, sixth and the ninth grades. for the high school, the san francisco school district saw a decrease of more than 400 students this year. crossing guards are going to be new greeting kids returning to class in san francisco tomorrow. officials say they'll add a second crossing guard to a few intersections in the city to try to make things safer for students. in september, parking control officers are also going to be regulating parking around the city's schools during school hours. thanks to millions in renovations, san francisco's balboa park is rising in popularity. yesterday officials cut the ribbon on the revamped park

couple of weeks. if latest fire started just before 7:00 this morning at a former army surplus store on couch street. the building has been vacant for several years. luckily, no one was hurt. oakland police now looking for the suspect of a drive-by shooting this morning. it happened on 61st avenue near international. the victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. another shooting happened in the same area, just hours apart. officers are also asking anyone with information about a drive-by shooting on 580 in san leandro to come forward. the shooting happened lay friday night. the highway patrol says an 18- year-old man was driving westbound near 150th avenue when someone pulled up next to him and opened fire. the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be ok. officers are looking for a light colored sedan. police in san jose are investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old boy. officers found the injured boy on panoma avenue yesterday afternoon. they say he was shot about a block away on san jose avenue. the boy was rushed to the

hospital and is expected to survive. the motive for that shooting is under investigation, but officers say it may have been gang related. well, we have some new video we want to show you of a car fire in oakland. it's pretty dramatic when you see the flames shooting out from underneath the hoot of that car. this all happened before 11 last night on 55th avenue. the owner blames the fire on mechanical problems. he says he was at a party when someone rushed in and told him his car was on fire. five people have been released from the hospital after being rescued from the waters off of candlestick point. yesterday afternoon, two 12- year-old boys got stuck in a current while trying to retrieve a football from the water. four adults nearby heard their calls for help and jumped in after them. three of them also got caught up in the current. the coast guard responded and pulled everyone to shore. one person suffered mild hypothermia, no other injuries were reported. a man shot in the face outside a raiders cardinals football game in arizona is recovering this morning. that shooting happened in the

parking lot outside the stadium in the suburb of phoenix. police say the victim and the shooter had been arguing. it was the gunman who actually first called 911 about the shooting, claiming it was an accident. he was arrested, but has since been released. authorities say both men could be charged in the case. >> and you may recall the fan violence that broke out at last year's preseason game between the raiders and niners at the stick. the n.f.l. is now requiring any unruly fan ejected from the stadium to take a four-hour online course. topics include anger management, alcohol consumption, and crude braver. that course -- crude behavior. that course could cost up to $100 and if fans don't take the class and are caught on stadium property, they could be arrested for trespassing. chevron is working to repair its image in the wake of the richmond refinery fire. crews are spraying water on local school playgrounds and parks, trying to hose down any smell that may be in the air.

parents have kearns about the air quality and children's safety. scoot begins there tomorrow. >> it's regrettable incident that happened. we want to make sure that we do what's right by the community. we have been in this community for a very long time. we value our place here, and so, we want to address people's concerns. >> the investigation into the fire continues. chevron says it is premature to discuss this case and any kind of cause. the contra costa times reports in the past decade chevron's richmond refinery has been fined $11,000 by cal osha, but state officials say it's a good safety record when you compare it to other bay area refineries. a feud may be brewing between federal and state investigators over that fire. cal osha's lead investigator posted several comments on his facebook page accusing the u.s. chemical safety board of grandstanding for the media and giving out misleading information about corroded pipes as a possible cause of the fire. he wrote, the board was quote,

scaring the public with half truths and misleading information two days into an investigation, and they can't wait to talk to the press. one might conclude they have a biased agenda, end quote. that posting has now been removed and the feds are declining to comment. luxury electric car maker fiskar automotive is recalling its karma sedan. the company says cooling fans on the cars can catch fire. the recall follows an investigation into a fire in woodside earlier this month. the company says it will replace the cooling fans and will be contacting customers soon. sacramento firefighters are calling in extra resources after they say two schools were intentionally set on fire. on friday afternoon, firefighters responded to a large fire at phoenix school. then two hours later, another fire began at larconi montesorri school. the fire was so intense crews had to let it burn out and couldn't save the daycare, the preschool or the kindergarten.

>> something somebody would do to children, to the school. >> a book drop box at a library and an apartment carport were also set on fire. firefighters say they expect the incidents to possibly escalate, and they also say they hope to catch those responsible before someone gets hurt. a fire in central washington is leading to mandatory evacuations in idaho. heavy smoke from the trinity ridge fire is forcing people in southerville and pine from their homes. both towns are located 105 miles northeast of boise. the fire has burned 130 square miles. firefighters say thunder and lightning are threatening their plans to contain the fire. further west, people are returning to their homes after a fire in the cascade mountains about 75 miles east of seattle. that fire destroyed 70 homes and 210 other buildings. firefighters say the fire danger in the area remains high, thanks to hot, dry weather and the chance of lightning.

road closures on highway 4 starting today and continuing through next week. overnight crews will be closing the westbound lanes on highway 4 at summersville road. it's part of a project to widen that roadway through pittsburg and antioc. the lanes will close at 10:00 and reopen at 4 a.m. tomorrow. if rest of the week they'll be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. police arrested an elderly man in connection with an apparent road rage incident that injured a bicyclist on thursday in santa rosa. 81-year-old hear smith is suspected of chasing a cyclist onto the oakmont golf course, and hitting him with his car. smith was driving on a suspended license for a prior road rage incident. the bicyclist suffered a fractured wrist. that required surgery. right now an 18 day d.u.i. crack-down is under way in sonoma county. on friday a special d.u.i. task force began serving warrants and conducting probation checks. d.u.i. checkpoints and extra patrols are also in effect for the next

couple of weeks. we were with officers last night as they went from house to house looking for people who have either skipped out on court or on their d.u.i. classes. right now there are more than 14,000 active d.u.i. warrants in sonoma county. >> these operations help us track down as many as we can find. try to keep on them so there's some accountability for these people who you know, get a d.u.i. and don't go to court. >> police say these types of crack-downs are worth it to help avoid alcohol-related crashes and say as the summer winds down and labor day weekend approaches, more people are drinking, celebrating and getting behind the wheel. occupy protesters are continuing to stake a claim over u.c. berkeley land in albany. occupiers took over the land known as the guild track back in april. they want to turn the field into an urban farm. campus police kicked them out in may but demonstrators are continuing to break in and pick crops. at 11 this morning they will hold a harvest party at the

entrance. the university says it doesn't have the resources to stop that trespassing. closing arguments are expected this week in the apple/samsung patent case. samsung argues that apple should pay more than 421 million to samsung for infringement on its patents. while apple is seeking nearly 2.8 billion in the case. testimony wrapped up on friday and tomorrow the sides will discuss jury instructions, closing arguments are set for tuesday. people in marin county can now settle their traffic tickets and pay the fines without ever visiting the courthouse. the county court just implemented a new system where people can pay their fees online, or through the phone. all users need is their birth date, and either the case number, citation number, or driver's license number. for now the service is only available for traffic infractions, but the court hopes to set up a similar system to pay criminal fines by next summer. well, the last day of celebration for san jose's gay

good morning to you. welcome back. giving you a beautiful view from san rafael. mostly clear skies over the area. the marine lar about 1000 feet deep, and we're seeing quite a burn-off at this hour. that marine layer burning back to the coast. and it's time to recap the top stories we have been following this morning. vallejo firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire, the third in just the past couple of weeks. this latest fire started just before 7 this morning at a former army surplus store on couch street. the building has been vacant for several years. and nobody was hurt. f.b.i. agents and u.s. attorney will visit a sikh temple in fremont today. the visit comes exactly two weeks after a gunman opened fire at a sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. that gunman killed six people before turning the weapon on

himself. the little league team from petaluma is a little more than an hour away from facing one of its biggest challenges. after their exciting win in that opening round of the little league world series, they are now going to take on a squad from tennessee. and ktvu's allie rasmus is live in petaluma with more on the journey so far and all the fans already showing up. >> reporter: the fans definitely are showing up in downtown petaluma. we're less than 90 minutes away from game time, and you can see there are people lining up. this is the boulevard cinemas in downtown petaluma. they are showing the petaluma nationals play game 2 in the little league world series live inside the movie theater. the game shows at 11, but people in line have already got their tickets. they're getting in line so they can make sure to have a good seat and so that the families, some of them there's a family here of eight people. they said they wanted to get here early to make sure they could all sit together. now one of the theaters showing this is completely sold out. that's about 500 tickets. the representatives say they have another 200 tickets still

available, and this is video you're looking at, the petaluma national all stars are the western regional champs, and today at 11 they'll face off against southeast regional champs from tennessee. it's supposed to be a tough game. people here in petaluma are thrilled about the little league team's success. >> it's really cool. i've met some of them and played with some of them in different sports. and it's really cool they get to go there and experience and it play on the williams port field. >> i played little league in 1957 and '58. the first years that they had it here. and so, here it is, 55 years later, and we finally got a team in the world series. it's just -- it's really unbelievable. >> reporter: now, it's been a week of team spirit and civic pride here in petaluma. this is what it was like at the movie theater on thursday when more than 500 people showed up to watch game 1. also shown on the big screen here at the cinema.

citrus cilid have been confirmed in river side and san diego counties. the bug carries a disease that is lethal to citrus trees. this has led to quarantines which means no fruit can be shipped out unless clipped of foil yag. california is home to the largest number of charter schools in the nation. but they are fighting to stay alive. budget cuts are blamed for why so many charter schools are struggling across the state. according to the california charter school association, nearly 412,000 kids are enrolled in claritier schools in california. in 1994 there were just 31 charter schools in the state. now there are more than 900. a new report shows charter schools get about $395 less in state funding per student than traditional schools. well, converting to a charter school is the reason oakland's lazeer elementary school was able to stay open. they were one of five city schools slated to close this morning but supporters got the approval to make the conversion. administrators say they're

a plane carries a delegation from the sudan crashed this morning killing everyone on board. it happened in a mountainous area in south sudan. reports say the pilot ran into bad weather. 32 people were on that plane including the country's minister of endowment, and a leading member of sudan's peace and justice party. the delegation was on its way to a muslim festival. in another united airline flight had to make an emergency landing at newark liberty airport this morning. the f.a.a. says the seattle bound flight had to turn back around shortly after takeoff because of smoke in the cabin. this is the second emergency landing at the newark airport involving a united airline flight in less than 24 hours. a berlin bound flight also had to turn around last night because of a serious problem with one of its engines. federal aviation officials say a tire blew during takeoff and flew into the engine. and passengers reported seeing flames spewing from the engine.

no injuries reported in either incident. three extremely rare baby tigers in china are expected to be introdud to the public this october. they are cute. they were born last month at the zoo in south china. the south china tiger has been classified as critically endangered. there are only about 100 south china tigers in the country. >>this afternoon the giants look to sweep the padres down in san diego before heading north to los angeles for that big three-game set against the dodgers who trail the giants only by a half game in the division. one of yesterday's big contributors was joaquin arias. here he is in the 2nd with a solo shot to left. the padres took the lead in the 3rd on a three run shot off of barry zito. zito only went four and gave up four runs on the game. the giants are rallying in the 5th to tie the game. they took the lead on another hit by arias. he was 3-5 on the night with three r.b.i. the game went back and forth from there, but the giants hang

on for an 8-7 win. new this morning, a report that san francisco giants outfielder melky cabrera tried to avoid a drug suspension by creating a fake website selling a fake cream. that, according to the new york daily news. the publication says that an associate of cabrera's was involved in acquiring a website to try and establish that cabrera had purchased a topical cream online and inadvertently used a banned substance. cabrera was hit with a 50-game suspension last week for testing positive for synthetic testosterone. the a's are also going for a sweep today against the cleveland indians here in oakland. oakland had a big 3rd, scoring four runs yesterday, first on a josh reddick double, and then there was that big two-run home run by yolenas sespodes. the a's built up an 8-1 lead into the 8th inning. but despite a 9th inning by the
