inland areas. i will take a look at those numbers and tell you about a cooling trend in just a bit. >> good morning. there's a little bit of a crowd now. some of those cash lanes building. we may have a bigger crowd when they turn the lights on in 15 minutes. if you are driving on the san mateo bridge that traffic looks good. back to the desk. >> thank you. the past few days have been violent days in san jose. several shootings, the latest one last night. with the details of what's been going on. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this latest victim was transported with life threatening injuries. no one else was hurt. an officer on scene told us the shooter was running down the street out here shooting at other witnesses out here as he fled. happened close to 9:00 a.m. the shooter is still on the run and investigators tell us they have

a vague description of the suspect. the gun violence comes after a deadly week. four people have been killed. three people shot to death and one woman stabbed with a sword last monday. that doesn't include all the other shootings where victims survived. >> 6 to 7 shootings in the last 24 hours. i don't know this one is related to any of the others. >> there have been 28 homicides in 2012 here in san jose. police are still looking for a motive in this most recent shooting. ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have developing news now. we are learning that search teams are looking for a missing jet skier. that's according to the marine patrol. no other details are being released at this time. again, we have reports of that they are looking for a missing jet skier.

>> time now 6:03. a ch p isp investigation is happening now after an ambulance hit and killed a man who was running across the freeway. happened about 11:30 last night. we've been told the person got out of a car and was trying to run across highway 4 when that ambulance hit him. the eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours while that accident was investigated. >> the chairman of the u.s. chemical safety board is scheduled to tour the site of the fire in richmond today. joins us now with information on the visit and new details we are learning about the investigation. >> reporter: he'll be touring the site of where the explosion happened and the csb as well as cal osha have signed an agreement. where on august 6th a fire broke out sending a ploom

of toxic air. the immediate area of the failed pipe does remain hazardous due to carbons and structure issues. smoke and soot from the fire did not find an air quality system that could measure in a meaningful way. the network of air monitors run by the bay area is designed to track everyday levels of pollutants. health officials believe those are responsible for sending nearly 11,000 people to nearby emergency rooms. folks who were complaining of breathing problems. find out why southern california is better prepared for the bay area in dealing with the disaster like the chevron fire. ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is 6:05. a skinny dipping scandal in the holy land. republican law maker is apologizing after a night of

partying last summer. coming up we'll take you live to our washington d.c. bureau and get more on the investigation into a late night swim and another law makers reportedly involved. back here at home, a bay area activist who played a major role in the black panther party was an fbi informant. they are saying the fbi recruited richard aoki in the 1950s. he's reportedly credited with giving guns to the black panthers and training them on how to use them. after joining the party in 1967. he committed suicide in 2009 after battling an illness. some of the world's fastest boats will be taking over the san francisco bay tomorrow. 8 countries will be competing for top honors in the america's world series. it is a warmup race to the big event next year.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> new information on the search we told you about last night. volunteers found a notebook belonging to the missing uc davis student yesterday afternoon. the notebook belongs to linnea lomax. searchers from the foundation were looking for the teen over the weekend. the discovery confirms the thought that she accessed that trail system. she was last seen almost two months ago leaving a mental health facility on june 26th. 250 volunteers searched for her over the weekend. there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. time now 6:13. one month since the drol

colorado shooting rampage. since then, more than $4 million has been donated to the aurora colorado relief fund. help victims pay for medical. the suspect will go back to court on thursday. just two weeks after a deadly shooting at an sikh temple. the fbi visited an east bay temple offering reassurance. northern california's u.s. attorney, alameda county district attorney and fbi agent held this meeting. finding and averting threats. >> we don't want anybody having a fear. we would like to know what would be here. >> a white surpremicist gunned down earlier this month.

officials are investigating whether there's a possible connection between these two shootings. and this coming thursday, first lady michelle obama will fly to oak creek wisconsin. meeting with the families killed two weeks ago. a leader says he welcomes the gesture by the first lady and calls the visit reassuring and heartening. >> a republican member of congress is apologizing for skinny dipping on a trip to israel. alison burns is in washington d.c. news room. and tells us he is not the only one in hot water. >> reporter: the fbi investigated the late night swim in the sea of gallali that involved congressman, their families and staff. more than 20 people took part in the swim on a trip to israel last august. happened after a dinner that involved heavy drinking.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. ringing the opening bell there. pretty excited people. new york stock exchange. sandstrom gold. they began trading today . over on the right the nasdaq, those kids are excited. brand new backpacks filled with supplies and that's thanks to operation backpack volunteers of america.

one of the great organizations. that kid is cracking me up. he is excited to be there. he maybe doesn't know he's on tv and doing that. one of the great groups across the country that work very hard to fill backpacks for kids in need. very expensive back to school. >> and the kids are heading back to school. >> yes, they are. >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it is monday august 20th. >> time now 6:30. >> developing news coming. we are learning more about a search for a missing jet skier on bethel island. a man was jet skiing and reported missing about 5:30 last night. a search for him was called off about 1:00 this morning. the coast guard just called us. they told us they are out again right now

searching the area using helicopters and boats. this is a developing story. we'll keep following this and bring you the latest developments here on the ktvu morning news. also later today the chairman of the u.s. chemical safety board will be visiting the refine refire in richmond. tara is live now to tell us what we're finding out about this continuing investigation. >> reporter: within the past 24 hours, the chemical safety board agreed to provide continued cooperation at the scene of the explosion site which is still difficult to access. on august 6th a fire broke out. initially air quality officials were safe. but now officials say their network for analyzing that smoke is not geared for disasters.

most of the toxins blew past those monitors. we may never know the fall out. sending 11,000 people to nearby emergency rooms. they were complaining of breathing problems. the bay area quality management district maintains 0 monitors across -- 40 monitors across the regions. now, there's a push for more monitoring. officials say that southern california is actually berry quipped to deal better equipped to deal with this. 11 as opposed to our five. ktvu channel 2 news. >> overnight firefighter was injured battling a house fire in the oakland hills. allie rasmus joins us now with a look at the damage and what firefighters are saying that was so unusual about this fire.

>> reporter: now, that it's lighter out, you can see behind us the damage this fire caused. this is a home near the intersection of michigan and sun kissed. this fire started just before 2:00 this morning. but for much of the morning, there was smoke coming out of the roof. firefighters came back to make sure the fire was out. flames soared 15 to 20 feet into the air. no one was living here. no one was inside. there was no one here hurt. the home had appliances but no furniture. why the flame was so big if there was nothing in the home to burn. because of all the trees and shrubs, firefighters were focused on making sure the flames didn't spread. >> we were able to contain the fire. we put up a water curtain

to ajace ant units. adjacent units. >> reporter: that firefighter dislocated his shoulder after the floor inside the home collapsed. for much of the morning, there was still smoke coming from that gaping hole you see in the roof of this home. up until about 5 minutes ago, there were -- there was still a couple fire trucks out here. firefighters about a short time ago did go inside the building to make sure all the hot spots were out. again, this fire happened just before 2:00 this morning. quickly put out and the flames did not spread. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> overnight in san jose, one person was rescued from a car that collided with a pick-up truck. that happened at 12:15 this morning. firefighters had

to use heavy duty equipment. no word on that victim's condition. >> out of control wildfire threatening 3,000 homes in shasta near redding. 7 homes have already been destroyed. 12,000 acres have been burned. look at these pictures. more than 1,000 firefighters are out there fighting the flames but so far only five % contained. the terrain is steep and very rugged. >> we're relying on some aircraft and bulldozers going in there building new line to help us be able to get our firefighters down in there. >> evacuation center has been opened for people forced to evacuate. cal fire says 300 out buildings and commercial properties are threatened by the flames. look at these flames from

the second fire this week on couch street in vallejo. the fires were in adjacent buildings. in about 10 minutes, tell you what authorities believe is the source of this string of fires. >> a congressman is doing damage control after he said that rape rarely results in pregnancy. today akins says that when asked he thought abortion should be legal. >> the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down. let's assume that didn't work or something, i think there should be punishment but it ought to be in the rapist in not attacking the child. >> issued a statement saying he misspoke but that he is still opposed to abortion in cases of rape. the six term congressman

is running for the u.s. senate. mitt romney and his running mate paul ryan are distancing themselves from the comments. a spokes woman says the men disagree with the statement and a romney/ryan administration would not oppose abortion. >> 6:37. the man suspected of breaking into the home of steve jobs is due in court in morning. 35-year-old macfarland admitted he broke into job's home and stole an ipad and other items. he gave the stolen ipad to a friend of his. he then used it to entertain children in a cloud routine. legal battle between samsung and apple is expected to wrap up this week. sue being samsung for patent infringements. $2.5 billion in damages. samsung is arguing apple inanyone knowledged on its

in place bringing mostly cloudy skies from the coast across the east bay as well as the south bay. well inland areas like concord, livermore, antioch. temperatures in the 50s but a cool start for some isolated areas over the north bay. a look at the satellite and radar. all reporting upper 40s at this hour. the sun is now up and begin to see a turn around. you can see here at the satellite radar, mostly clear skies. wefb a cooling -- we have a cooling trend that will begin tomorrow migrating closer to the coast arriving tonight and into tomorrow morning. that is going to drive our temperatures below average. that's some good news for dry hills. better recovery in the overnight hours. seasonal temperatures on tap. morning clouds followed by afternoon sunshine. mid-morning to late morning burn off. on shore breeze picking up for the

good morning to you. waking up with overcast skies from the coast and into some of our coastal valleys. cool start by the afternoon, temperatures similar to what was felt on sunday. 60s at the coast. 70s around the bay . upper 80s low 90s inland. >> welcome back, good morning to you. quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you. the man who was walking across highway 4 overnight was hit and killed by an ambulance. emergency crews tried to help him but the pedestrian later died. the eastbound lanes of highway 4 were shut down where several hours while that accident was investigated. >> an observation land firefighter was hurt battling a house fire that happened along sun kissed drive near michigan avenue about 2:00 this morning. the home was empty at the time of this fire. and the head of the u.s.

chemical safety board will visit the chevron refinely in richmond later today as the investigation there continues. this comes as san francisco chronicle reports monitors failed to collect any meaningful information after that fire began. >> san jose police are investigating several shootings. the latest happened just last night. tell us what she is learning. >> reporter: witnesses say the suspect was running down this street here shooting at random as he fled the scene on the 1600 block of east san antonio. the shooter is still on the run. investigators say they have a vague description of that suspect. the gun violence comes after a deadly week here. three people have been shot to death. and one woman was stabbed with a sword last monday. officers on scene have told us their

resources are stretched. we just didn't have the kind of response we had. with fewer officers nobody has --. >> 28 homicides in 2012. i just called the after hours officer to try to get an update in the condition. i'm still waiting for a call back on that. police are looking for a motive. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we have new video now of a race car crashing into several people during a charity race at the missouri state fair. police say the driver lost control during the battle of the badges. that's a race featuring old police cars. three of the people who were hit were flown to the hospital. they are expected to survive. two other victims were treated at the scene and released >> 6:47. new this morning the governor says it will stop censoring the media. something they have done for years.

told reporters this morning they no longer have to submit their work to state sensors before they publish any information. that government announcement is a dramatic reversal from the policies in place during 50 years of military rule. the u.s. military top general met with senior officials in afghanistan hours ago. attempt to find solutions to the rise and attacks by afghan soldiers. so far this year, 32 so-called insider attacks. the last one happened yesterday. two afghan police officers turned their weapons on u.s. troops. an american was killed. >> a string of suspicious fires is now raising concerns this morning. in less than a week two fires have occurred on the same street. firefighters battled these flames yesterday on couch street early yesterday

morning. the building on fire was empty. said to be an old army surplus store. just last tuesday firefighters were at the same site battling a fire next door. squatters in abandon buildings and car break ins in the area have prompted a neighborhood watch program. >> 6:49. occupy activists at berkeley went back to that land to harvest crops they planted earlier this year. there was tension at first at the gill tract but police eventually unlocked the gate for them. filled dozens of boxes with tomatoes, squash and greens. and then gave away the vegetables in albany and west oak land. the university needs to allow permanent. >> sal, checking the bay area. what are you keeping an eye on?

>> westbound 237 starting off a little bit crowded here as you approach the merge with 880 and no major problems there as the traffic continues to look good over to sunnyvale and 101. also this morning we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. you see a little bit of slow traffic especially on that ramp just a little bit. the rest of the main commute looks good if you are driving on to the bridge. about a 10 minute wait which is typical for this time of morning. traffic is moving along nicely. crowded conditions on 680 year 24. and 2 looks good. if you are driving on 80 we have a little bit of crowding near richmond towards alameda county. let's go to rosemary. >> good morning. it's a gray start across the bay. the city in fog. can't see the city from this point of view. we will see

sad story hollywood movie director known for top gun and beverly hills 2 committed suicide yesterday jumping to his death. 68-year-old tony scott often seen wearing that torn red ball cap on movie sets had a modest demeanor. known as a creative genius. a lot of people are mourning his death this morning. he jumped off the vincent thomas bridge about noontime. authorities later found a suicide note in his office. >> petaluma still alive in the little league world series despite a loss yesterday. hundreds of fans once again packed the boulevard 14 cinemas downtown to watch them play on the big screen. tennessee scored 4 runs in the last inning. they won 9 to 6. it is a double
