stock market finished flat. the dow is down 3 to 13,271. the nasdaq is down 0.38 at 3,076. the s&p is down 0.03 at 1,418. in san jose police faced dwindling resources as they face a spike in deadly violence. it began with two killings last third a third tuesday and a fourth yesterday. yesterday a shooting happened in south west san jose. in addition to the homicides several people were shot and wounded, including a 15-year- old boy. a woman who moved to san jose thought she was leaving behind that kind of violence. >> leaving los angeles i thought i got away from that because i don't see, you know, the boys that look so much like they are gang related so, yeah, scary. >> police say they are working with fewer officers making it difficult to respond quickly. this year 28 people have been

killed in san jose. at 6:00 p.m. the violence is strigging down to businesses, what we learned about their intentions. police say they have a suspect in custody in the june 4 killing of an 18-year-old. he was arrested in chico on wednesday and brought back to the east bay over the weekend. police say he is also wanted there for a series of robberies. a dozen wildfires are raging across our state and most of them are in northern california. these are the fires and we would like to focus on two of them. more than 5,000 acres burned. to the east we will talk about the ponderosa fire. that burned 15,000 acres and that is where the lines meet. weave pictures of the -- we have pictures of the ponderosa

fire. this shows 2-1200 firefighters. you see the tall trees, the terrain they are facing. we have another picture from the ponderosa fire. you see the tree line in this one. the ponderosa fire started on saturday after a series of lightning strikes and crews say the grass, brush and the trees were so dry that once the lightning hit it took off. the ridge line, you see hills here and flames are visible and that tells you what crews are up against. thousands of homes are threatened and 7 structures have been destroyed. with all this fire you could imagine resources are taxed tonight. let's bring in ktvu's patty lee who is live in alameda with how what is happening up north may effect us here in the bay. >> reporter: fire chiefs held a conference call to assess their

resources. with 23 teams out of town the resources are pretty much tapped. >> two strike teams, 8 firefighters, are planning to head out of town tomorrow. to relieve crews fighting one of the four wildfires burning in northern california. >> it taxes our system, all the systems in california. >> reporter: he says right now there are enough crews to cover the city but if more resources are required it would be forced to make other arrangements. >> we want to keep it at two teams. >> reporter: right now 5-9 counties have the capacity to send ea full -- to send a full strike team out of town. >> approximately 300. that doesn't include the orders today. >> reporter: it is hard to know how many more crews will be

needed. the fire is 10% contained and the ponderosa fire fire is spreading so fast it is forcing evacuations. >> reporter: the state has requested a lot more man power and off road engines to go up to the wildfires. the only thing left in this area is a bulldozer. at 6:00 p.m. we will have more on the fire fighting efforts and the story of a woman trying to save hundreds of horses. reporting live, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. there are numerous fires in northern california. lightning strikes in the foothills, mountains, caused the problems. right now near the ponderosa fire there is a number of fires in the area, 86 degrees. humidity 14%. these are not really that nasty

aid but he succumbed to his injuries. >> the accident closed the eastbound lanes of highway 4. 75-year-old man was hit and killed after his bicycle veered in front of a truck at 12:15. the man died that scene. investigators say the bicycle rider was headed south when he swerved. police said there is nothing to indicate the driver broke the law. comedian phyllis diller died today at the age of 95. a fallen construction rain knocked down utility poles. the operator was trapped for a while. his injuries are minor. the company said 400 customers in the area were without power. contra costa county sheriff's deputies located a jet skier who was missing. they say he called them this morning using the cell phone of a farmer on jersey island. the family reported him missing

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. >> new information tonight about a suspicious house fire that broke out this morning in oakland. ktvu's christien kafton has been out all day talking to authorities and people who live in the area. you learned this is the same home that police say was used as a pot form and the scene of a shoot out? >> reporter: yeah. that is one reason this is a suspicious fire. we talked to neighbors, they said they heard someone here this morning before the flames broke out. >> reporter: flames raced through this home in the oakland hills after 1:30 a.m.

this morning. firefighters worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading. one firefighter dislocated his shoulder putting out the blaze a blaze that is suspicious. >> it is not occupied and the amount of fire that was in the home when we got here. >> reporter: neighbor whose -- neighbors heard someone around the home this morning and called 911. the home was the scene of a attempted armed robbery and shoot out july 12. officers found an illegal marijuana growing operation and arrested three people. >> they were advertising with marijuana rugs. you shouldn't advertise your business. these guys. >> reporter: a july second shooting left a man dead a few

blocks away. >> they watch the robberies, home invasions, armed robberies. >> reporter: investigators are looking for tips to catch the shooters and looking for information about who may have started the fire that destroyed this home. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. crews made quick work of another fire today, broke out about 8:30 a.m. this morning. firefighters had the fire out within 10 minutes and no one was hurt. investigators say the fire may have been sparked when someone left a pan unattended. workers in a despite with the country club may be in line for back wages. a judge is recommending they pay $3.5 million in back pay and to reinstate the workers.

they won't be celebrating just yet, they have 28 days to respond. the san francisco district attorney announced the sentencing of a man involved in a scene. the district attorney detailed the crimes of keith wilson. he was sentenced to five years for a money laundering scheme going back to 2006. he convinced 7 victims to invest in his company, cheating them out of $347,000. >> working with others by participating in the social scene in san francisco in order to make the victims feel comfortable. >> the district attorney says the money was spent on sopping sprees and -- shopping sprees. general motors issued a recall because of a fire
