"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, august 22nd. developing news in berkeley, an early-morning evacuation order has been lifted following a gas leak at the cal campus.

it started with a car crash in the dorm building on chaning way. alex savidge is there to explain what's been happening. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, this entire building had to be evacuated this morning. it started with this car crash. the driver lost control, jumped up onto the sidewalk and slammed no that gas line. this all happened around 2:45 this morning. this is at the base of putnam hall of chan, right near the campus. as gas began to leak in the air, the staff manually activated the fire alarms and students all made their way out of the building. they were outside for more than an hour. we talked with one student this morning who was forced from her home after this crash. >> we heard a crash. we wanted to know what was

going on. we ran downstairs. >> reporter: police are not releasing that individual's name and what charges they are facing. as we come back out here live, you can see this dorm building, putnam hall. several students inside. again, a nerve-racking morning for those getting ready to start classes tomorrow. live in berkeley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. in 30 minutes, the coast guard cutter will help search for an unknown on the. this is southwest of the -- this is 60 miles southwest of the golden gate bridge. we just spoke to the coast guard. it sent another plane to relieve the one that's been on the scene since 2:00 a.m. the coast guard is responding to a report from people on a boat who saw what appeared to be a boat with the wings on

fire. so far it's found nothing. an investigation is underway into a violent attack this past weekend at the alameda point ferry terminal. the patch reports a dozen young men were roned with some of them -- roshed with some of them pus -- robbed with some of this them pistol-whipped. other gunmen soon came. they pistol-whipped some victims and fired off some shots. no one was hit. one suspect has been arrested so far. one worker has been arrested at a la fayette massage parlor accused of prostitution. this is on mt. diablo boulevard. the 47-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly offered a undercover police officer sex in exchange for money. there were three other arrests back in june. that sweep followed a new orie dance by the -- ordinance by the city council for all

massage parlors to be certified by the state. the lockout at the pleasantwood country club started. well, on friday, a judge with the national labor relations board ruled the lockout is illegal. he says cast castlewood has to -- he says castlewood has to reinstate the employees and pay back wages and that will cost the club $million. lorraine blanco has been out at the america cup since early this morning and has more on why there are so few boats on the water right now. so what's going on, lorraine? >> reporter: well, dave, there are just four boats on the water right now. you can see two of team sweden's and two of team italy's. the rest of them are parked by the bay bridge. a few of those are getting

degrees. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast with your weekend always in -- always in view. >> all right. thank you, mark. 7:09. firefighters are making progress on a wildfire burning near redding. the ponderosa fire is now 50% contained. it was sparked by lightning on saturday in tehama and shasta counties. it's already destroyed 50 structures that's a -- structures, and that's a significant increase interest yesterday. 200 homes are still threatened. coming up at 7:5, we'll have a live report -- 7:35, we'll have a live report from the fire lines. hundreds of firefighters are working to put out two fires started by lightning in men so dino county. both of -- mendocino county.

both of those homes are under a evacuation order. more than 1100 acres have burned so far. this year is on pace to be the worst year year for wildfires. -- worst year for wildfires. the previous record was set in 2006 when more than 9.8 million acres burned. 2012 is likely to surpass that number because of widespread drought conditions. 7:11. guess what. the wild animal found in san jose, a wild marmot. how did it get there? it's a rodent. it's a rodent as big as a cat. normally they live in the mountains. but one was captured in the willow grain neighborhood. now, animal rescue think the marmot stowed away under a struck that drove from the

derailment in maryland. a train full of coal jumped the tracks monday ninth. the two victims were sitting on the edge of a bridge railing with their backs to the train when it detailed. shortly before the crash, one victim tweeted levitating. the other "looking down on old ellicott city and drinking on top. ellicott city sign." investigators are looking into whether the two women contributed to the crash or if it was all a terrible coincidence. criticism for a group of retired military officers and cia officers who paid for a new attack ad that goes after president obama. worse than ever are leak -- worse than ever are leaks coming out of the white house. they are claiming leaks were made to filmmakers. that's something the white

police in one san francisco neighborhood are looking out for blue painters' tape. people in bernal heights say the tape has been appearing on the bottom of their doors. police say this could be a sign that burglars are canvassing the area. if the tape gets moved, potential burglars know who is home and who is not. >> one of my neighbors was gonna go on vacation this week. so of course, if you find any paint tape, remove it. we'll be away from the house. >> so far, no actual burglaries have been reported in connection with the tape but police say homeowners should be on alert and remove any tape they see stuck to their home. a new report called tips off is helping people in antioch to help or text strips. last week two men were

welcome back. a car -- a car crashed into a building and ruptured gas lines outside the door at the dorm on chaning way and college avenue. the evacuation order is over. alex savidge has been out there since 4:30 this morning. what do you know now? >> reporter: this was an -- this was an out-of-control car that jumped and slammed into the dorm of this uc berkeley

door and sheared off this gas line. this prompted the evacuation of the students. everything happened around 2:45 in the morning at putnam hall at college and chaning. just blocks away. gas was leaking into the air as pg&e crews came in and they eventually turned off the line. more than 200 students had to be moved for about an hour or so. the uc berkeley police sergeant says the fire alarms in the building alerted students to the leak. >> it was a wonderful process. that way the evacuation started immediately. >> the fire alarm went off. that was really scary. it was scary coming down the scares dare dash coming down the -- it was scary coming down the stairs. >> reporter: uc berkeley police say the driver of that car that crashed this morning was the
