in touch with police departments where criminals with similar mos struck. reporting live, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. a man is accused of stabbing another man to death this week. officers arrested michael howard of san jose for the killing of juan munoz. juan munoz was pronounced dead at this store tuesday. police don't know of a motive but they know it was not gang related. they hope surveillance video will help in the investigation. san jose church is collecting donations to pay for the burial of a homeless woman who was stabbed last week. hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil. the church raised $1,000 for her burlier. any left over funds will be donated to a non-profit agency. crews rushed to a crash on

a freeway this morning to help free someone who was trapped. it happened this morning in san jose on highway 101. the chp says one person was crapped but that -- trapped but that person suffered only minor injuries. the lanes were reopened an hour later. an allegation claiming chevron refinery knew about the risk of corrosion problems before the fire. communities for a better environment says 80% of the crude oil at chevron refinery is persian gulf crude and that 5 years ago they acknowledged corrosion of a fire at the same location. >> there is this pattern due to corrosion and we know the sulfur level in the crude has been going up. >> they are still investigating

the latest fire. meanwhile a report released today shows slightly higher signs of carbon in the air following the fire and evidence of smoke particles. he says the results were as expected www.ktvu.com has more information, including photos of the vapor cloud that erupted over the chevron refinery. just click on the tab for complete coverage. fire crews are making progress on the ponderosa fire but almost 1,000 homes remain threatened. firefighters are battling the 28,000-acre blaze by air using helicopters. it is burning 30 miles east of redding. officials say the conditions are so dry, if it jumps the lines it could burn for another square mile. >> you have to understand that we haven't had these conditions

since 1999. >> the fire destroyed 84 structures and another 900 are threatened. officials say the fire is now 60% contained. the body of jacob adams who was swept away in a yosemite river was found. jacob adams and his brother were in the merced river when they were swept down stream. jacob adams' body was found today under neath a bolder. a new raise for san francisco's police chief will make him the highest paid police chief in the country. he will be earning $307,000 a year. >> i put in a ton of hours and i enjoy a good salary but it is the position that it is the honor the hold. >> he will earn 50% more than new new york's police chief who over sees a force 15 times the size of san francisco and his

income could have been higher. he turned down $15,000 bonuses for the last two years. university of california at berkeley welcomed students to the first day of classes. ktvu's rob roth is live with the tough times that could still be ahead for students. rob? >> reporter: right now more than 1,000 students are out, no, this is not a protest, it is a welcome back party as administrators say berkeley is managing through this tough economic storm for now. >> reporter: university of california at berkeley on this first day of class. >> i feel like a fish in a big pond. >> exciting. >> drag. >> funding dropped by 40%. tuition and fees doubled since 2005 to $12,800 a year.

>> job and classes. >> first of all, the higher educational system in california would be healthier and we would have lower tuitions for the students. >> reporter: administrators said university of california at berkeley so far managed to weather the storm financially through cost cutting, tuition cutting and a donation fund but a lot is riding on proposition 30 to increase taxes. >> for students in taxes if it fails it will be a dark day. and that could mean tuition rising to $14,000 a year. >> we are walking a tight rope. we really do need additional financing to be as good as we could be. >> reporter: officials have been able to increase the number of courses offered, many students told us they were having problems. >> there is classes i wanted to get in to that i wasn't able

examiner said it could take weeks to identify a man killed in a house fire last week. it broke out friday morning inside a home. crews say mountains of clutter inside made the fight difficult. authorities say they haven't been able to reach relatives to help in the identification. police say a man wanted for sexual assault has been spotted in mexico. he is wanted for the rape of a teenager. he broke into the girl's home and sexually assaulted her. they learned of sightings of him in veracruz, mexico. they believe he fled there after the assault. how to prevent and report child abuse. on tuesday they discussed recommendations by a committee on mandating reporting of abuse. it comes in the wake of a

when the new chick-fil-a opened in san jose people braced for protest over over remarks by the ceo. ktvu's robert handa joins us now. there are two crowds here that chick-fil-a restaurant, customers and protesters. >> reporter: today's grand opening couldn't have worked out better for the chick-fil-a in san jose especially since they have been hit by protests since the founder made remarks supporting traditional marriage. people began camping out over night to get free chicken deals deals and after doors opened at 6:00 a.m. the crowd kept getting bigger.
